Chapter 9

Author: Westwine
The impatience and iciness in Rowan's gaze were apparent.

Rosalie felt a little diffident as she looked into his eyes. She could tell he wanted nothing more than to draw a clear line between them; he didn't want her to latch onto him after their one-night stand.

She should've stopped pestering him if she had the slightest bit of pride and dignity. Still, the thought of Simon and Ivory having hooked up last year behind her back made her anger surge.

Rowan was the man Ivory had coveted and failed to win over for four years, and he was better than Simon in every way. Simon's friends were sure Rosalie was just playing hard to get, and they were confident she couldn't find a man better than him.

Rosalie had to win Rowan over, even if it was just to show them up.

"Let's exchange numbers!" She pulled out her phone. When she saw Rowan standing there without moving, she quickly came up with an excuse. "You bought me clothes, right? I'll Venmo the money to you."

Only then did he grab his p

"Do you remember what you said to me yesterday?" Rowan asked.Of course, Rosalie remembered. She didn't expect herself to regret it so soon, though. It would've been great if she'd taken him up on his offer—she wouldn't be in such an embarrassing situation if she had!"I only said that yesterday because I didn't want you to force yourself to be with me out of responsibility!" she said, emphasizing "force".She clenched her fists around the bag on her knees, feeling diffident. Still, she kept her sweet smile in place.Rowan watched her silently. After a while, he curled his lip slightly and asked, "So, you don't want me to take responsibility?"Rosalie felt he would go along with her and reject her if she were to agree with him. She flipped her hair over her shoulder and said crisply, "I asked around and heard that you don't have a girlfriend. I'm single, too. How about we give each other a shot?""No, thanks. I have no intention of dating just yet." Rowan grabbed his phone and st

There weren't many people left in the cafeteria when the four arrived. There were many empty seats.Eugene enthusiastically led Rosalie to get food, which was laid out buffet-style. The meat and vegetable dishes were charged the same price—the total depended on the weight. Most of the meat dishes had already run out, but there was still a variety of vegetable dishes. The pork chops that Eugene claimed were delicious had run out, but there was still grilled chicken. However, there were only wings left. So, Rosalie got some mushrooms, vegetables, and a fish fillet. Eugene paid for her with his staff card.Their table had four seats, and Eugene sat beside Rowan. Rosalie sat across from Eugene, and the seat beside her was empty. However, a plate of food had already been placed there. She asked, "Where's Dr. Watson?"Eugene pointed with his chin. "Over there!"Rosalie looked in the direction he'd pointed to see Olivia waiting before a stall. Soon, she returned with a bowl of piping h

The regular accessories Rosalie displayed at her counter in Sasha's boutique were generally quaint items worth about a few thousand dollars. These weren't considered expensive, so her colleagues could help her sell them if a customer was interested. However, her colleagues didn't dare help her close sales for the emerald bangles because they were worth over ten thousand dollars. The emerald trade ran deep, and the profits could be generous. A single emerald bangle with good color and clarity could vary wildly in price, depending on who was selling it—some could sell for a few thousand dollars, but some could sell for tens of thousands of dollars.Rosalie didn't have that much capital, so the pieces she acquired were in the low to mid-five-figure range. A typical resale might bring in a few thousand dollars in profit, but the better deals could add about five thousand dollars to her earnings. The profit generated was much higher than what she could make from her design work. Moreov

Rosalie took a cab home after having dinner with her colleagues that night. The cab stopped at a red light, and she checked the time.Just then, her phone buzzed. It was a call from Graham. If she were to be honest, she didn't want to answer it. Still, she remembered what Lisa had said and took the call. She asked coolly, "What do you want?""Hurry up and come to The 1997!" Graham hissed.Rosalie was about to turn him down when he continued urgently, "Sasha just called me to ask where Simon is. I told her the address, and she should be here soon. I'm worried she'll cause a scene!""I'll be right there!" Rosalie said. The light turned green, and she told the cab driver to turn the car around.…Fortunately, Rosalie wasn't far from The 1997. It was one of Berdon City's more upscale clubs and a regular haunt for Simon and his friends. They gathered there for most of their functions—Rosalie's birthday party had been held there. She was also one of The 1997's regular customers, so th

Eugene soon replied and told Rosalie that Rowan had gobbled up every last morsel of the food she'd prepared. That was a surprise. She thought he would've thrown it into the trash.Eugene added, "That was my first time seeing Rowan with such a great appetite. Which restaurant's takeout was that? I'll order some tomorrow to try it out!"Rosalie had initially been somewhat unconfident about pursuing Rowan, but Eugene's words gave her the boost she needed. "I cooked the food."He was surprised. "You know how to cook?"She sent him a smug emoji and watched as he typed and stopped. After a while, he replied, "How could Ro make you cook for him? He's bullying you just because you're his niece!"She didn't tell him she was pursuing Rowan and made up an excuse. "He helped me a few days ago, so I wanted to thank him. I heard you guys mention that he had a weak constitution and couldn't handle food that was too salty or oily. I'm used to cooking for myself, so I thought I'd make an extra po

"I violated you?" Rowan raised an eyebrow and looked at Rosalie coldly. She didn't even bat an eye as she nodded. "I had too much to drink that day; I didn't know what I was doing. Having sex with a woman who wasn't in her right mind is a violation of her! Don't you have basic legal knowledge, Dr. Chapman?"Rowan's expression darkened, and he clenched his jaw. After a brief silence, he said, "You can sue me."Rosalie didn't expect him to be so brazen. He was refusing to back down! She bet he was sure she wouldn't make a big deal out of this! She'd already let the matter go, but seeing him act so shamelessly pissed her off. "Stop acting like you're above it all, Rowan. You act like being around me is unbearable for you, but I know you're attracted to me!"I don't remember what happened in the latter part of that night, but I was still awake and lucid when you pinned me down and kissed me!"He looked at her emotionlessly, his face not betraying any hint of how he felt.Rosalie fel

Rowan found the milk tea shop and walked in, almost instantly seeing Bonnie and Rosalie seated close to the door.Bonnie happily got up when she saw him and grabbed his hand, pulling him closer to Rosalie. She said cheerily, "Let me introduce someone to you, Ro. Who knows what would've happened to me if not for Rosie?"She told Rowan what had happened thus far. When she was done, she added, "Rosie saved my life, so you have to thank her properly for me!"Rowan furrowed his brows when he saw the bright smile on Rosalie's face. She got up and said, "What a coincidence, Dr. Chapman. We keep running into each other!"Bonnie was surprised. "You two know each other?"Rowan didn't say anything, but his expression darkened. Rosalie smiled and said, "I'm Rosalie York, Mrs. Chapman Senior. My mother was Helen Winslow. Don't you remember me anymore?""Oh, you're the York family's young lady?" Bonnie was shocked. She stared at Rosalie before nodding thoughtfully. "I can see it now that you'v

Everyone in the room heard what Sasha had said over the phone.Gideon had only leaned close to see the photo out of curiosity. Graham was his brother and always hung out with Simon and the gang. Naturally, Gideon had an impression of Rosalie."Rosalie York? Wasn't she Rowan's little shadow back in the day?" Sebastian looked at Rowan with interest.Gideon also glanced at Rowan. After some thought, he said, "You know, I think you're right! She was pretty as a child, and she's a stunner now that she's all grown up. She has quite a good figure, too…"Rowan threw his cards aside and stood up. Sebastian and Rowan looked at him in confusion. His expression was frosty as he said, "I just remembered that I need to do something. You guys go ahead without me."With that, he left.…Sebastian soon replied to Sasha and told her he was willing to help. That put Rosalie at ease.On Friday, Sasha brought Rosalie out for a pampering session and even got her an evening gown. Around 6:00 pm, grow

"I don't need you to interfere with my life," Rowan said. "I know what I'm doing.""Why would I need to talk to you about this if you really knew what you were doing?" Emily retorted. "Rowan, you are our only son. If you don't get married, the Chapman family—""I have a girlfriend!" Rowan blurted out without knowing why he had said it.By the time he realized he had messed up, Emily had already latched onto it. Stunned, she exclaimed, "What did you say? You have a girlfriend? Who is it? Why don't I know about it?"However, Emily soon sensed that something was off. "That's impossible. If you have a girlfriend, why did you agree to come with me to the Johnson residence? I'm telling you right now, Rowan. I won't be so easily fooled by—""I'm still in the process of wooing her.""Is that true?" Emily questioned suspiciously. While she didn't quite trust him right now, she knew that he wasn't the type who would lie about something like this."I'll introduce her to you guys during t

Rowan did harbor less-than-decent ideas about Rosalie. If not for that, he wouldn't have allowed her to buy two bottles of beer. If she had indeed fallen asleep, he probably wouldn't have done anything—but she'd woken up.He subconsciously glanced downward. The straps of her camisole were beginning to slide down her shoulder, and the thin material left little to the imagination. Having caught a whiff of shower gel coming off her, he knew she had showered. She was like a freshly peeled fruit, inviting him to have a taste.Rowan closed his eyes and composed himself before attempting to pull her arms off him."You're drunk.""I'm not drunk!" Rosalie insisted.Clutching Rowan's neck tightly, she flashed him a smug smile. "Even if you don't admit it, I know you came just to pick me up. They all said you never attend such gatherings, but you did today. You also left so soon after, and you brought me home!"As Rowan stared at her pretty little face and ruby lips, which moved as she spok

While waiting for the traffic light at the intersection, Rowan looked to the side and found that Rosalie had been staring at him the whole time.Raising an eyebrow, he asked with an unreadable expression, "Why are you looking at me like that?"Still staring unblinkingly at him, Rosalie replied with a grin, "Because you're handsome!"At 22, she was in the prime of her youth. With her fair complexion, rosy lips, and pearly white teeth, she looked exceptionally captivating when she smiled widely at him.Rowan subconsciously tightened his grip on the steering wheel. Gulping, he said in a hoarse, sultry voice, "Don't dress like that ever again!"Startled, Rosalie looked down—and immediately saw her cleavage. In a flash, her cheeks flamed. She tugged on the neckline to lift it higher before realizing that the gown had been designed this way. She immediately put her hand back down and looked away, choosing not to meet his fiery gaze. Instead, she lowered the window and looked out as if

Rosalie sent Rowan a message to inform him that she was leaving with Emily. Once that was done, she got into the car.Emily sat in the back seat with Rosalie. Admiring Rosalie's pretty face, Emily remarked, "I really envy Melinda for having such a marvelous daughter. If you'd stayed with me back then, I would have a son and a daughter too! Rosie, why don't you be my daughter instead?"As soon as she finished speaking, Leonard exclaimed, "Mr. Rowan's car is over there, Mrs. Chapman!"Emily looked out the window, and true enough, she saw Rowan's car, which was still parked outside the house. He hadn't left yet! Obviously, he'd been lying to her when he said he had to leave to deal with an urgent matter.Feeling even more riled up, Emily instructed, "Forget about him. Let's go."Rosalie was still clutching her phone and checking her messages from time to time, but Rowan hadn't responded to her. Had he seen her message? He probably did, right? But why hadn't he left yet?She kept gla

"You're right! Rowan has only just arrived. I'm sure he won't be leaving so soon. I'll call Kate and tell her to come over. I'm sure she can make it in time!"Rosalie was listening closely to the women's conversation when her phone beeped. She checked her notifications and saw a message on WhatsApp."Leaving?" Rowan texted.Rosalie turned her head around and ended up looking right into a pair of eyes. Her heart jumped.Rowan's eyes were dark and still. It was as if he'd been watching her for a long time, but there was no emotion in his eyes.Squeezing her phone, she looked down and responded, "Yes.""I'll wait for you outside."That sentence quickened Rosalie's heart rate. When she looked up again, Rowan was already heading toward the door. Once he was gone from sight, she stuffed her phone in her bag and got up to look for Melinda.…Never would Emily have thought that Rowan was going to leave so soon after his arrival. Vexed to no end, she complained, "Here I was thinking he

After casting an indifferent glance at Ivory, Rowan frowned and asked, "And you are?"Ivory felt as if someone had just dumped a bucket of cold water over her head. Her smile frozen, she stopped in her tracks and asked in disappointment, "You don't remember me?"Rowan's expression remained calm as he paused in thought. "Are you a patient of mine?"By now, Ivory could barely keep her smile on her face."Sorry, but I'm not working right now. I have other matters to attend to!" Rowan said.In next to no time, Rowan was gone from Ivory's sight. He'd left without the slightest bit of hesitation. The passionate fire that burned in her heart was instantly put out. He didn't have any recollection of her at all. Was there any meaning to her years of pining if he didn't even remember her?…"My son has arrived!" Emily said with a gentle yet proud smile. The women in the vicinity all had a gleaming look in their eyes when they looked at Rowan. They all began shoving their daughters forw

"Rosie looks delightful in this gown. Pink suits her so well!" Emily remarked.Nodding, Melinda said with a smile, "My beautiful daughter looks good no matter what she wears.""Your daughter?" Emily repeated, feeling rather taken aback. The other guests quickly filled her in, explaining that Melinda had just formally announced that she was taking Rosalie as her daughter."I thought you wanted Rosie to be your daughter-in-law," Emily said in confusion.Emily wasn't fond of gossiping about others behind their backs, so no one told her about what had happened recently. As for Melinda, she simply didn't want to talk about the willful Simon in front of everyone anymore. At the same time, she truly regretted having told everyone about Rosalie and Simon in the past. By being such a blabbermouth about it, she ended up affecting Rosalie's reputation."Simon's not that lucky," Melinda said with a smile. "Rosie found someone better than him!""Really?"With a kind expression, Emily looke

Frida glanced at the women around them. Anyone of standing in Berdon City was in attendance today, and these women often discussed their husbands and children with each other. However, Frida hadn't heard anyone mentioning that their son was dating Rosalie. They all loved comparing themselves to each other, and they weren't just picky with their prospective daughters-in-law. Even their future sons-in-law had to be of equally high society, if not better. They wouldn't allow their daughters to marry into an ordinary family."Rosie, why didn't you bring your boyfriend over today?" someone asked, trying to ease the tension. Not wanting to embarrass Melinda, Rosalie came up with a lie. "He had to work, so he couldn't make it.""Does he still have to work at this hour of the night?"The wealthy ladies exchanged looks.Melinda was fretting on Rosalie's behalf. Rosalie was honest to a fault. Why was she blurting everything out?""What line of work is your boyfriend in, Rosie?"Rosalie's

Melinda's visit down memory lane had stirred a sense of nostalgia and gratitude in Rosalie's heart. Not wanting to embarrass Frank and Melinda, Rosalie quickly nodded."Mom, Dad, thank you!" she choked out.Melinda's tears were flowing as she pulled Rosalie into an embrace. Even Frank's eyes turned red with emotion as he nodded with a look of contentment and said, "My dear Rosie."Once they descended from the stage, Melinda led Rosalie back to her circle of wealthy women. This time, they all shared envious compliments over Melinda's new "daughter".Now that she had a daughter, Melinda was in a pretty good mood herself. Just then, a thought occurred to her. Smiling, she asked, "Why didn't Joseph join us today, Mrs. Locke?"The atmosphere took a strange turn at the mention of Joseph. All of the women eyed Frida Rowland, Joseph's mother, with knowing expressions. On the other hand, Rosalie didn't get why Melinda was asking about Joseph.Frida simply gave a dry laugh before saying, "
