Chapter 30

Author: Westwine
Rosalie finally knew why the fridge was so packed. It turned out Rowan had hired a housekeeper to handle the cooking.

Watching Betty Welch gather all the leftovers, Rosalie asked, "Are you getting rid of those?"

"Dr. Chapman has a sensitive stomach, so he can't eat leftovers."

Rosalie had just made a meal using leftovers. Even groceries from the store weren't always fresh right off the bat. This seemed way too fussy.

"Betty, how about leaving these leftovers with me? I can take them with me tomorrow."

Betty hesitated and looked over at Rowan.

"You can take whatever's left in the fridge."

"Oh, okay."

Betty quickly grabbed the bags and made for the door. But after a few steps, she turned back with a smile. "This is the first time I've seen you bring a woman home. Your girlfriend's really pretty!"

Rosalie was no stranger to compliments, but being called Rowan's girlfriend was different. Her face grew warm, and she hurried to correct the misunderstanding.

"I'm not his girlfriend.

Rowan stood in the doorway, his stance poised and commanding. His eyes narrowed slightly as he locked them on Rosalie. He, too, seemed caught off guard for a moment, staring at her without blinking.Rosalie's mind went blank for three seconds before she finally registered what was happening. A rush of heat flooded her face, and she quickly crossed her arms over her chest in a panic."W-Why didn't you knock?" she yelled at him.Rowan stared at her bare body without making any effort to turn away. His lips parted slightly, and his voice was low and rough. "I had my secretary pick up some clothes for you."Rosalie noticed the bag in his hand, but his blatant stare was impossible to ignore.Humiliated and furious, she snapped, "Put the bag down and shut the door!"Rowan let out a quiet hum as he bent down to set the bag on the floor. Straightening up, he cast a few glances without thinking before slamming the door shut with a loud bang. The loud noise made Rosalie flinch, and she st

Those were the clothes Rosalie had changed out of....When Rosalie arrived at the boutique, she checked the official website for the price of the outfit she was wearing, intending to transfer the money to Rowan. Then, she saw his message on WhatsApp. "You left your clothes in my car."Rosalie recalled the dress and undergarments she had changed out of and quickly texted back. "Should I swing by on my lunch break to grab them?""I'll drop them off tonight."That meant Rowan didn't want her visiting the hospital. She took the hint and dropped it. She simply transferred him the money.Once again, over 20 thousand dollars was gone. The loss still stung. She had to rent a house soon, and the money never stretched as far as she needed it to.Setting her phone down, Rosalie decided to throw herself into work, hoping to close a few big deals today to make up for the loss.…Sasha arrived at the boutique at 10:00 am. She greeted Rosalie, and the two of them made small talk, just like

After she got back from dinner, Rosalie downloaded a real estate app and began scrolling through nearby listings. There weren't many one-bedroom units available. Most of the options were two- or three-bedroom units.Since two- and three-bedroom units came with higher price tags, Rosalie ended up spending the whole night searching. Eventually, she reached out to an agent, Amanda Moore, and asked for her assistance.Over the next three days, Rosalie toured several apartment complexes downtown with Amanda. The areas were appealing, but the prices gave her second thoughts. Each place would cost around 6,000 or 7,000 dollars a month. Her monthly salary came to just 7,000 or 8,000 dollars before factoring in any side income. She still had other living expenses to cover.Rosalie had been aiming for something in the 2,000 to 3,000 dollar range, but that budget wasn't feasible for a downtown place. Amanda recommended she consider shared housing instead.Sasha explained to Rosalie that spli

Zane gave a quick nod. "Ms. York, you don't need to worry about staying here. I'd be more than happy to sign the lease with you."Since he had made his position clear and Rosalie couldn't find anything more affordable, she responded with a "Thank you". After signing the lease and having dinner with Sasha that night, she moved her things in.Sasha looked around the apartment and told Rosalie it was a good deal for the price. Still, given that Rosalie was a woman and Zane was a man, Sasha suggested she change the lock for safety. When Rosalie brought it up to Zane, he understood immediately and agreed without hesitation.Rosalie spent the week sorting everything out, from changing the lock to buying the basics for the apartment. In the meantime, she neither saw Rowan nor heard from him.Rosalie considered going to the hospital to look for him, but after remembering how cold and distant he had been, she decided to start by contacting other people instead.…Eugene and Rowan headed

"Well, I guess I should thank you, Rowan." Olivia took the milk tea beside Rowan's hand without a second thought. She stabbed the straw through the lid, took a sip, and looked disgusted. "This is way too sweet. It's bad for your health. You shouldn't drink this stuff too often."She set the drink aside and launched into a discussion with Rowan. Their conversation was all about medical topics, leaving Rosalie with nothing to say. All she could do was watch as the two hit it off.Eugene turned to her instead. "Rosie, have you found a place to rent yet?"Rosalie replied, "Yeah, I have. I've already moved in.""Which apartment complex did you rent in?""Newstone Residences.""How much is the rent?""2,500 dollars."The moment she said that, the other two went quiet and stared at her.Eugene looked surprised. "Did you rent the whole one-bedroom apartment by yourself, or are you sharing it with someone?""It's all mine.""Only 2,500 dollars for the whole place? I remember units in

Rosalie looked at Rowan.Eugene continued, "Ro wasn't from there. He attended Zellion University. While he was on exchange at Norester University, Olivia's mentor supervised him for six months."Rosalie nodded....After lunch, Rosalie returned to the boutique.Eugene followed Rowan upstairs and entered the latter's clinic. "Ro, don't you think Olivia's words earlier were too mean?"Rowan ignored him and picked up the patients' post-op reports to review them.Eugene kept talking, more to himself than to anyone else. "Newstone Residences is a replacement housing complex, and those places aren't well-maintained. At first, my parents thought about buying a secondhand apartment there for me, but after seeing it in person, they decided the area seemed shady. "So, they decided to go with a pre-construction unit instead. Rosie's landlord may have graduated from Norester University, but I still don't trust him, and I'm worried about her. She's living by herself."What if someone targ

Rosalie took the lipstick she'd gotten ready earlier from her bag and held it up as she stepped out.Rowan stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, smoking. When he heard her, he turned and asked flatly, "You found your lipstick?"Rosalie nodded and quickly opened her palm to show him the tube."That's all, then, right?"Rosalie glanced at his dining table and noticed he was eating. She asked, "Mind if I join you for dinner?"Rowan didn't know what to say."You're not going to finish all this by yourself, and throwing it out would be a waste. I haven't eaten yet, and cooking when I get home sounds like way too much effort. Don't you think so?"Four generous, nicely made dishes were laid out on the table. Rosalie was certain he couldn't finish them all, and she knew he never ate leftovers."In return, I can bring you lunch tomorrow. You'd save yourself a meal. Sounds like a fair trade, doesn't it?"It'd also give her another reason to see him. She had to admit that was a pretty sm

Rosalie was confident in her cooking skills. The last time she had shared a meal with Rowan, he had eaten a hearty portion. Today, however, he seemed far less interested in the food.Rowan didn't reply. He stayed seated in silence, peeling the shrimp with graceful ease.Rosalie continued, "You should consider letting me handle cooking for you. I won't charge you. You'd only need to cover the grocery costs. That way, we'd have lunch and dinner sorted. It would be much cheaper than hiring Betty or relying on cafeteria lunches or takeout!"Plus, my cooking is hygienic, healthy, and safe. I can make something new every day, so you won't get tired of it. Since you have a sensitive stomach, I can learn how to make meals that are gentler on your digestion."Just let me know what you like, and I'll cook it for you. I'll look up the recipe online if it's something I haven't made before. I swear—"Rowan cut her off. "Is that how you kept Simon happy?"Rosalie fell silent. She looked at his

"I don't need you to interfere with my life," Rowan said. "I know what I'm doing.""Why would I need to talk to you about this if you really knew what you were doing?" Emily retorted. "Rowan, you are our only son. If you don't get married, the Chapman family—""I have a girlfriend!" Rowan blurted out without knowing why he had said it.By the time he realized he had messed up, Emily had already latched onto it. Stunned, she exclaimed, "What did you say? You have a girlfriend? Who is it? Why don't I know about it?"However, Emily soon sensed that something was off. "That's impossible. If you have a girlfriend, why did you agree to come with me to the Johnson residence? I'm telling you right now, Rowan. I won't be so easily fooled by—""I'm still in the process of wooing her.""Is that true?" Emily questioned suspiciously. While she didn't quite trust him right now, she knew that he wasn't the type who would lie about something like this."I'll introduce her to you guys during t

Rowan did harbor less-than-decent ideas about Rosalie. If not for that, he wouldn't have allowed her to buy two bottles of beer. If she had indeed fallen asleep, he probably wouldn't have done anything—but she'd woken up.He subconsciously glanced downward. The straps of her camisole were beginning to slide down her shoulder, and the thin material left little to the imagination. Having caught a whiff of shower gel coming off her, he knew she had showered. She was like a freshly peeled fruit, inviting him to have a taste.Rowan closed his eyes and composed himself before attempting to pull her arms off him."You're drunk.""I'm not drunk!" Rosalie insisted.Clutching Rowan's neck tightly, she flashed him a smug smile. "Even if you don't admit it, I know you came just to pick me up. They all said you never attend such gatherings, but you did today. You also left so soon after, and you brought me home!"As Rowan stared at her pretty little face and ruby lips, which moved as she spok

While waiting for the traffic light at the intersection, Rowan looked to the side and found that Rosalie had been staring at him the whole time.Raising an eyebrow, he asked with an unreadable expression, "Why are you looking at me like that?"Still staring unblinkingly at him, Rosalie replied with a grin, "Because you're handsome!"At 22, she was in the prime of her youth. With her fair complexion, rosy lips, and pearly white teeth, she looked exceptionally captivating when she smiled widely at him.Rowan subconsciously tightened his grip on the steering wheel. Gulping, he said in a hoarse, sultry voice, "Don't dress like that ever again!"Startled, Rosalie looked down—and immediately saw her cleavage. In a flash, her cheeks flamed. She tugged on the neckline to lift it higher before realizing that the gown had been designed this way. She immediately put her hand back down and looked away, choosing not to meet his fiery gaze. Instead, she lowered the window and looked out as if

Rosalie sent Rowan a message to inform him that she was leaving with Emily. Once that was done, she got into the car.Emily sat in the back seat with Rosalie. Admiring Rosalie's pretty face, Emily remarked, "I really envy Melinda for having such a marvelous daughter. If you'd stayed with me back then, I would have a son and a daughter too! Rosie, why don't you be my daughter instead?"As soon as she finished speaking, Leonard exclaimed, "Mr. Rowan's car is over there, Mrs. Chapman!"Emily looked out the window, and true enough, she saw Rowan's car, which was still parked outside the house. He hadn't left yet! Obviously, he'd been lying to her when he said he had to leave to deal with an urgent matter.Feeling even more riled up, Emily instructed, "Forget about him. Let's go."Rosalie was still clutching her phone and checking her messages from time to time, but Rowan hadn't responded to her. Had he seen her message? He probably did, right? But why hadn't he left yet?She kept gla

"You're right! Rowan has only just arrived. I'm sure he won't be leaving so soon. I'll call Kate and tell her to come over. I'm sure she can make it in time!"Rosalie was listening closely to the women's conversation when her phone beeped. She checked her notifications and saw a message on WhatsApp."Leaving?" Rowan texted.Rosalie turned her head around and ended up looking right into a pair of eyes. Her heart jumped.Rowan's eyes were dark and still. It was as if he'd been watching her for a long time, but there was no emotion in his eyes.Squeezing her phone, she looked down and responded, "Yes.""I'll wait for you outside."That sentence quickened Rosalie's heart rate. When she looked up again, Rowan was already heading toward the door. Once he was gone from sight, she stuffed her phone in her bag and got up to look for Melinda.…Never would Emily have thought that Rowan was going to leave so soon after his arrival. Vexed to no end, she complained, "Here I was thinking he

After casting an indifferent glance at Ivory, Rowan frowned and asked, "And you are?"Ivory felt as if someone had just dumped a bucket of cold water over her head. Her smile frozen, she stopped in her tracks and asked in disappointment, "You don't remember me?"Rowan's expression remained calm as he paused in thought. "Are you a patient of mine?"By now, Ivory could barely keep her smile on her face."Sorry, but I'm not working right now. I have other matters to attend to!" Rowan said.In next to no time, Rowan was gone from Ivory's sight. He'd left without the slightest bit of hesitation. The passionate fire that burned in her heart was instantly put out. He didn't have any recollection of her at all. Was there any meaning to her years of pining if he didn't even remember her?…"My son has arrived!" Emily said with a gentle yet proud smile. The women in the vicinity all had a gleaming look in their eyes when they looked at Rowan. They all began shoving their daughters forw

"Rosie looks delightful in this gown. Pink suits her so well!" Emily remarked.Nodding, Melinda said with a smile, "My beautiful daughter looks good no matter what she wears.""Your daughter?" Emily repeated, feeling rather taken aback. The other guests quickly filled her in, explaining that Melinda had just formally announced that she was taking Rosalie as her daughter."I thought you wanted Rosie to be your daughter-in-law," Emily said in confusion.Emily wasn't fond of gossiping about others behind their backs, so no one told her about what had happened recently. As for Melinda, she simply didn't want to talk about the willful Simon in front of everyone anymore. At the same time, she truly regretted having told everyone about Rosalie and Simon in the past. By being such a blabbermouth about it, she ended up affecting Rosalie's reputation."Simon's not that lucky," Melinda said with a smile. "Rosie found someone better than him!""Really?"With a kind expression, Emily looke

Frida glanced at the women around them. Anyone of standing in Berdon City was in attendance today, and these women often discussed their husbands and children with each other. However, Frida hadn't heard anyone mentioning that their son was dating Rosalie. They all loved comparing themselves to each other, and they weren't just picky with their prospective daughters-in-law. Even their future sons-in-law had to be of equally high society, if not better. They wouldn't allow their daughters to marry into an ordinary family."Rosie, why didn't you bring your boyfriend over today?" someone asked, trying to ease the tension. Not wanting to embarrass Melinda, Rosalie came up with a lie. "He had to work, so he couldn't make it.""Does he still have to work at this hour of the night?"The wealthy ladies exchanged looks.Melinda was fretting on Rosalie's behalf. Rosalie was honest to a fault. Why was she blurting everything out?""What line of work is your boyfriend in, Rosie?"Rosalie's

Melinda's visit down memory lane had stirred a sense of nostalgia and gratitude in Rosalie's heart. Not wanting to embarrass Frank and Melinda, Rosalie quickly nodded."Mom, Dad, thank you!" she choked out.Melinda's tears were flowing as she pulled Rosalie into an embrace. Even Frank's eyes turned red with emotion as he nodded with a look of contentment and said, "My dear Rosie."Once they descended from the stage, Melinda led Rosalie back to her circle of wealthy women. This time, they all shared envious compliments over Melinda's new "daughter".Now that she had a daughter, Melinda was in a pretty good mood herself. Just then, a thought occurred to her. Smiling, she asked, "Why didn't Joseph join us today, Mrs. Locke?"The atmosphere took a strange turn at the mention of Joseph. All of the women eyed Frida Rowland, Joseph's mother, with knowing expressions. On the other hand, Rosalie didn't get why Melinda was asking about Joseph.Frida simply gave a dry laugh before saying, "
