Chapter 5
I stood there like a statue while he walked to me. He was smiling brightly at me. “Hey, Hailey! Thanks for coming!” Paxton called out, he bounced the ball toward the basketball court with his friends. I felt a flutter in my chest, a mix of excitement and nerves. He winked at me, and for a moment, I really want to keep seeing him again and again. “Awwn! He’s such a lover boy!” Jessy gushed, her eyes sparkling with admiration as she nudged me playfully. “C’mon, guys, let’s go sit over there,” Mia suggested, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm. We found seats on the bleachers, the old wood creaking beneath us, we sat down and watched the game. “Do you think Paxton will win again?” I heard one of the girls whisper, and I caught myself biting my lip, trying to focus on anything but their voice were so loud. “Yes! He’s so cute! Only his cuteness and smartness will make him win. He is a God!” another girl exclaimed, and a part of me felt jealous at their ease in gushing over him. I plugged in my AirPods, hoping the music would drown out the chatter about Paxton and allow me to focus on the game. I played one of my favorite Justin Bieber's song “Under the influence” Just then, the crowd erupted into cheers and uproar, pulling my attention back to the game. I turned just in time to see Dimitri and Paxton during the halftime show. Paxton moves so fast with supernatural speed, his curly hair bouncing from the breeze as he dashed across the court. He leaped and released the ball, and it soared through the air before swishing through the net. “Goal!!!” The crowd roared, and for some reasons, I felt a smile tugging at my lips despite my efforts to remain composed. “We love you, Paxton!” the girls screamed, their voices high with excitement. I couldn’t help but smile sheepishly, Paxton's eyes stopped at mine as he grin at me giving me a wink. “See? I told you he’d win!” Mia and Jessy bragged, and I nodded along, trying to suppress the mixed feelings swirling within me. “He is a good player,” I fake a smile, my voice almost a whisper. But then my heart sank as my gaze landed on Dimitri. He was kissing another girl, his attention fully on her. I blinked my eyes and raised the volume of the music. “He's my past now” I consoled myself. Soon, it was the girl's turn to play volleyball. My plans became sweaty. “C’mon, Hailey! It’s our turn to play!” Nikki’s voice sliced through my thoughts, yanking me back to the present. I stood, but my heart felt heavy. Nikki smiled wickedly at me, She had a curly smirk on her face. The whistle blew, and we took to the volleyball court. The deal is to get the last goal right which is the third goal and one of us would be the winner. The ball was passed and Nikki played so aggressively, it was supposed to be a fair play. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off about her, especially with that wicked grin she kept throwing my way. With every serve, my anxiety built. “You can do this, Hailey,” I told myself, but doubt gnawed at me like a hungry beast. I jumped up and was about to score when she brushed her shoulder on mine, I felt a sharp pain and fell to the ground, blood was oozing out of my skin. “Owwww!” The students murmured in confusion. I staggered up to my feet and took the ball again. Nikki smiled wickedly at me. The whistle blew again, and I served the ball, but as I did, Nikki brushed against my shoulder again. Pain shot through my body, and I fell to the ground, gasping. “I can’t do this anymore!” I cried out, clutching my shoulder. Blood seeped through my fingers, a stark reminder of how brutal this game could be. “What the hell was that on her shoulder?” I winced in pained. “Hello, lover girl. C’mon, let’s see who wins! Are you so tired already?” Nikki laughed, the sound sharp and cruel. My heart sank further. I glanced toward my friends, their cheers became my strength giving me courage. Then suddenly, a hand gripped my wrist and pulled me up. It was Paxton, his presence warming and his cute smile melted my heart. “Hey,” he said softly, his gaze searching for mine. I stared directly into his eyes, he drew his face closer and kissed me passionately. The world around us faded, and in that moment, it was just us. “You can do this, Hailey.” His voice was a soothing balm, and I felt hope igniting within me. I wiped off my tears and watched him stroll off. Taking a deep breath, I picked up the ball again. I could feel my heart pounding, Dimitri was watching, and I couldn’t let him see me fail. My gaze landed on my friends who smiled at me giving me more hope. “I can do this!” I whispered to myself, I tightened my hands on the ball. The last whistle blew, and I charged forward, dodging Nikki’s desperate attempt to quack me again. With a surge of energy, I dribbled the ball. Immediately my eyes caught the glint of the pin on Nikki’s shirt. A mischievous smile crept onto my face as I feigned left, then right. With the last strength I had left, I threw the ball. “Goal!!!” The crowd erupted in cheers, and for a moment, I felt invincible. “Hailey! Hailey!” my classmates chanted, their voices lifting me higher. I turned to see Paxton clapping, pride shining in his eyes. It was everything I needed to fuel my spirit. I totally forgot about my wound. Just then, Nikki stormed up, her face twisted with anger. “No! You may win, but you won’t get this opportunity next time!” she spat, her words slicing through the joy like a knife before she stormed off. Mia and Jessy rushed to me. “Don’t mind her! We love you! She's just jealous” Mia shouted, pulling me into a jubilant hug. “C’mon, let’s get you cleaned up. You’re bleeding!” Jessy urged, concern flickering in her eyes. “What the heck happened?” They chorused in unison. “It’s okay, I’m fine,” I replied, though the warmth of victory was now mingled with a throbbing pain in my shoulder. As we walked off the court, my mind was racing—not just about the game, but about Paxton, Dimitri, and the fierce competition that lay ahead. I smiled at the thoughts of Paxton's lips against mine. *** They finished cleaning me up and dressing the wound. I could still feel the sting, but at least it wasn't bleeding anymore. "Hope you get better soon because there's a party for the students tonight since we won the game!" Mia said, her voice dreamy like she was already picturing the event. "I'm sorry, I can't..." I tried to say, but Jessy immediately hushed me. "Oh please, don't even think of saying no again. Yes, it's our fault you got hurt, but did you see the way the students cheered for you? First time someone won against the queen, Nikki!" Jessy said, her eyes gleaming with excitement. "And, I saw how Dimitri’s eyes were glued to you the entire time! Don’t forget to wear a sexy dress tonight and show him what he’s missing." Mia added, laughing along with Jessy. I tried to roll my eyes but ended up smiling instead. They helped me up, slowly supporting me to our dorm. "Hey!" A voice called from behind us. We all turned, and of course, it was Nikki again. "What do you want this time?" I asked, feeling exhausted from her constant drama. "Oh, nothing really. Just inviting you to tonight’s party. Make sure you show up. Guess what?" She leaned closer and whispered with a grin that sent chills down my spine. "I have a surprise for you." She smiled mischievously and walked off with her friends, leaving us standing there. "Humph! Who does she think she is!" Jessy grumbled, her fists clenched in anger. "By the way, Paxton is really something else out there. He kissed you with so much audacity! Oh, girl... I'm happy for you!" Mia teased, nudging me playfully. I blushed, shaking my head. "Yeah, I’ve never seen that side of Paxton before. He’s so…cute," Jessy added. Back at the dorm, Jessy wasted no time, rushing to the wardrobe and selecting a stunning short gown for me to wear. It was absolutely beautiful, simple but elegant. "Here, you’re going to look amazing in this," she said, handing it to me. Mia left to get food while Jessy went off to shower. I laid on the bed, staring at the ceiling, lost in my thoughts. My mind wandered back to the kiss... and the way Paxton looked in his sportswear. I couldn’t help but smile to myself, butterflies swarming in my stomach. I sprang up from the bed. The party was in half an hour, and I needed to shower and change. For some reason, I found myself caring about looking good—no, not for Dimitri. I was over that. I wanted to look good for Paxton.Chapter 6I took a quick shower and dressed up. Standing in front of the mirror, I barely recognized myself. The dress hugged me in all the right places, and my hair was done in a ponytail with ribbons, giving me a youthful glow."Perfect!" Jessy and Mia both smiled at me.We left around nine o’clock. The party venue was set in the woods, at the infamous fire pit. As we approached, the flickering flames cast an orange glow over the crowd. The air was thick with the scent of burning wood and the sound of laughter, cheers, and loud music. It was just a tent-like cabin made with words from the 1980s and since our school has been for ages, it was made for students in those days and now was slightly refurbished for the new generation students to use. Like us...At the center of the pit, was a huge burning fire. Everywhere was beautiful and noisy. The fire pit was surrounded by students. Boys and girls danced, drank, and flirted with each other, while others threw beer cans and acted like f
Chapter 7Hailey's POVPaxton draw me closer, his eyes gleaming with that all-too-familiar mischievous smile. “Did you enjoy last night’s sex?” His voice was low, teasing, yet carrying a dangerous edge that sent shivers down my spine. My heart pounded in my chest. I hesitated, feeling the weight of his gaze. The memory of last night still lingered, and despite everything, I nodded. “Yes, I did.” I hated that I couldn’t deny it. I don't have a choice!“Good,” he said, his voice thick with satisfaction. “Let’s do it again. One more time, and I promise, I’ll leave you alone.”Panic flared in my chest. I swallowed hard, trying to muster the strength to refuse. “No, Paxton. This was a mistake.” My voice wavered, betraying the conflict I felt inside. The words weren’t as strong as I wanted them to be.“I can't. Those girls drooling over you would definitely kill me, including Nikki.” I swallowed hard.He raised an eyebrow, his smirk deepening. “You’re worried about Nikki, aren’t you? About
Chapter 8Hailey's POV The next morning, I was still lost in sleep, completely oblivious to the fact that I had a lecture in just an hour. That was, until Jessy’s loud voice jolted me out of my dreams, making my heart leap out of my chest. “Hailey! Hailey! Wake up! I think I saw someone that looks exactly like Paxton in a ridiculously luxurious car waiting out front!” Jessy screamed. My eyes shot open as I bolted upright in bed. “What? Paxton?!” My heart pounded faster than it should have, and I felt a wave of anxiety rush over me. Still dressed in my pink Barbie pajamas, I stumbled to the window and looked down. And there he was. Paxton. Sitting in a sleek black car with his usual smirk. His eyes locked with mine, and instantly, I felt that stupid flutter in my chest again. Ugh, why does this keep happening? Why does my heart feel like it's about to leap out of my body every time he's around? Seriously, someone tell me what the heck is wrong with me! “Oh no, Jessy. What did I do
Chapter 9Hailey's POV The drive to school was thick with silence. I stared out the window, my arms crossed tightly against my chest, feeling Paxton’s presence but refusing to acknowledge it. Every time I glanced at him from the corner of my eye, I caught his lips twitching, like he wanted to say something, but didn’t. I wasn’t ready to hear anything from him, not after last night. When we pulled up to the school, I grabbed the door handle before the car had fully stopped. “Thanks,” I mumbled, stepping out quickly. Before I could take two steps, chaos hit. The flashing lights of a thousand cameras went off like fireworks, blinding me. A wave of murmurs swept through the students. “Is that Hailey with Paxton?!” “No way! Did they come to school together?” “Nikki’s gonna lose it!” My breath hitched, and my chest tightened. The crowd began pressing in, and I could feel myself panicking. I'm allergic to too much crowding. Just when I thought I’d be swallowed by the attention, Paxton’
Hailey's POV “Who amongst you did this?!” Jessy’s voice cut through the laughter like a knife, and an awkward silence fell over the classroom. Every pair of eyes darted between me and Nikki, who leaned back against her desk with an air of smugness. I could feel the weight of their gazes, and I was done with being the butt of their jokes. I marched over to Nikki, my heart pounding in my chest. “What’s gonna happen now?” someone whispered, but I didn’t care. “Nikki! How dare you picture me at the party without my consent?” I spat, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside. Nikki laughed, a high-pitched sound that made my skin crawl. “And who are you? A God? Or a poor scholar?” Her friends joined in, cackling like hyenas. “Now you listen to me, you jealous freak! It’s not entirely my fault that your beloved betrothed rejected you! You should get over your rejection already and move on. Crazy slut!” I couldn’t believe the words that poured out of my mouth. Where the hell did I get
Paxton's POV The Lambo rolled to a smooth stop in front of the mansion, and I slid out, shoving my hands into my pockets. The maids were already lined up, heads bowed as I walked past them. "Good day, sir!" they chimed in unison, but I didn’t bother to acknowledge them. My mind was somewhere else. Just as I reached the staircase, I felt something cold and sticky dribble onto my chest. I glanced down to see orange juice staining my uniform. “You idiot!” I roared, turning to the maid who had spilled the drink. Her face went pale as she dropped to her knees, trembling. “Are you blind? You’re fired!” “I’m so sorry, sir! Please, it was an accident—” she pleaded, but I was already walking away, the anger bubbling up inside me. **I don’t have time for this.** I reached the sitting room and found my mom pacing. I barely had a chance to greet her before she started in on me. “Paxton, I want you to reject her! That girl... Hailey or whatever her name is, she’s not worth it! You need to be
Hailey's POV I stared at Paxton's message, my heart racing a little faster than it should. He wanted to meet up with me after practice? Why did that make me feel... warm? I couldn’t help but smile, but I quickly wiped it away when I noticed Mia and Jessy staring at me like hawks. "What?" I asked, trying to act cool as I shoved my phone aside. "You were totally smiling just now!" Mia giggled, her eyes gleaming with curiosity. "Paxton, I guess," Jessy added, leaning in with a teasing grin. "God, this room is about to explode from your blushing." I groaned, trying to deflect the attention. "Ugh, he just... he chatted me, okay?" "And?" Mia's excitement was palpable. "Did he say he loves you?" I rolled my eyes, though I couldn’t stop my lips from twitching. "No! He just asked me to meet him after practice." "Oh my gosh!" they both squealed in unison. "I didn’t even give him an answer yet," I muttered, but they were already too busy bouncing up and down with excitement. "What? Why
Hailey's POV I hurried into the hospital with Mia and Jessy trailing behind. My heart was pounding in my chest. The moment I stepped up to the nurse's desk, I blurted out, "Please, where’s Mrs. Edmond admitted?" "Room 300," she said, barely glancing up. My hands were trembling as I opened the door. The sight of my mom, lying pale on the bed with oxygen tubes strapped to her face, hit me like a punch in the gut. Tears immediately welled up in my eyes. My dad rushed to me, and I clung to him, burying my face in his shoulder. Mia and Jessy, standing quietly behind me, spoke softly. "We’re sorry for this, sir." My dad nodded weakly. “It’s okay, thank you for coming.” I turned back toward my mom, her frail hand resting on the blanket. My chest tightened. How had I not known? How had they kept this from me? I approached her, my voice shaky. "Mom, please... don’t leave me. Stay with us." I squeezed her hand gently, barely able to hold back my sobs. Her eyes fluttered open. She was so
Hailey’s POVThe moment our eyes met—if they even did—my breath hitched in my throat. Paxton. My past, my mistake, my regret. Or was he? My mind spun as I struggled to process his presence here. Did he see me? Did he recognize me? A part of me wished he didn’t, but another part—a buried, stupid part—wondered if he’d been looking for me all along.Jessie’s voice pulled me back to reality. "Hailey, are you even listening?" she asked, nudging my arm.I blinked, snapping my attention to her. "Jessie, isn’t it obvious?" I gestured discreetly toward the crowd, my fingers trembling. "Look over there! Paxton is here." I exhaled sharply, feeling a mixture of frustration and panic bubble inside me. "If I had known he’d be here, I wouldn’t have followed you. You dragged me into this mess, and now I’m stuck in the same space as the one person I’ve been avoiding for years!"Jessie crossed her arms, a teasing smirk curling on her lips. "Wow, Hails, you’re acting like he’s a monster or something. Re
Hailey's POVI never planned on attending this party tonight. In fact, I had outright refused when Jesse first suggested it. But she had a way of convincing me, and truthfully, I needed the distraction. My mind had been a chaotic mess lately, tangled up in endless thoughts—especially about Paxton. It wasn’t that I wanted to think about him, but no matter how much I tried to push him out, he always found a way to creep back in.After making sure my daughter was sound asleep in her room, I took a deep breath and dressed up. Nothing too fancy—just a simple but elegant dress that hugged my curves in the right places, though I couldn't help but feel a little self-conscious. Jesse was already waiting for me outside the party hall, excitement practically radiating off her.The moment we stepped inside, the atmosphere hit me like a wave. The bass from the music thumped against my chest, the air thick with the scent of alcohol, sweat, and expensive colognes. Laughter and chatter filled the spa
Here’s your revised and lengthened scene with deeper emotional expression, character reactions, tension, and a plot twist to keep things engaging.Hailey's POVAfter my encounter with Paxton at the shopping mall, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time—happiness. The way he stood up for me, like I actually mattered to him, sent warmth through my chest. But that feeling didn’t last long. Seeing him again, surrounded by those girls, laughing and flirting like he hadn’t just been my hero moments ago, made my stomach twist painfully. I hated how easily he affected me.Pushing those thoughts away, I focused on getting home. My daughter, Ava, barely mumbled a word before heading straight to her room for her nap. I sighed, brushing a hand through my hair before heading to the kitchen.Tonight was supposed to be fun. Just me and Jessy—my best friend—having a housewife and wine night, gossiping, laughing, forgetting the real world for a while. I pulled out some noodles, setting them to b
Hailey’s POV As I fingered the necklace Paxton had given me, a flood of emotions swept through me. The delicate pendant sparkled faintly under the mall’s fluorescent lights, but its significance weighed heavily on my chest. When he told me not to get myself into trouble again, his tone was teasing, but there was something else there—concern, maybe? I couldn’t help but smile at him, a soft, genuine curve of my lips, as though for a fleeting moment, we were something akin to a family. But deep down, I knew better. This fragile sense of togetherness was as fleeting as a shooting star, especially with his mother in the picture. That woman had the power to shatter any semblance of peace in our lives. I tightened my grip on the necklace and made a silent vow to keep Emily away from Paxton and his world. He couldn’t know she was his daughter. If he found out, everything I’d worked to protect would come crashing down. My thoughts spiraled as I glanced at Emily. Did he even remember today
**Hailey’s POV**I hadn’t expected to run into Paxton—of all people—today. The odds of it happening were slim, but somehow, there he was, stepping between me and the grumpy woman who had been eyeing me like I didn’t belong in this high-end mall. His sudden appearance made my heart jump. Had he been calling me? Instinctively, I reached into my bag, fumbling for my phone. When I pulled it out, my stomach twisted—fifteen missed calls. I swallowed hard, quickly shoving it back into my bag, guilt blooming in my chest. But what really threw me off was the way he spoke. "You’ve got a nice taste in jewelry," Paxton said smoothly, taking the necklace from the woman who had been glaring at me moments ago. I blinked at him, stunned. Did he really just say that? He never noticed little things like this before, not when we were… Well, not in a long time. Then came the words that truly caught me off guard. "Hey, baby. So, you’re here. You’ve got such a good taste—just the kind I love." Bab
**Hailey’s POV** When the jewelry was found in Emily’s possession, my heart froze. It felt as though the ground beneath me had opened up, threatening to swallow us whole. Emily? My sweet little Emily, the child who could barely keep her room tidy, now being accused of stealing something so precious? I wanted to believe this was all a mistake, a cruel misunderstanding that would soon be resolved. But as the store attendant held up the gleaming necklace, its brilliance mocking my disbelief, the reality of the situation hit me like a sledgehammer. The murmurs from onlookers grew louder, each whisper slicing through my fragile composure. “Why?” I muttered under my breath, staring at Emily as though searching for answers in her wide, tear-filled eyes. “Why would you do this, Emily?” “I didn’t, Mommy!” she cried, her voice trembling with fear. “I just wanted to look at it, I swear! I didn’t mean to—” “Enough!” the attendant snapped, her voice sharp and unforgiving. She snatched th
Hailey’s POV I wouldn’t lie—I was fuming. The nerve of Paxton, ordering me to pick up his clothes on a weekend of all times, especially knowing it was my daughter’s birthday. I had made it clear when I took the job as his personal assistant that weekends were off-limits unless it was an emergency. And this? This was no emergency; this was a power play. The way he dismissed me during the call, cutting me off before I could even explain how important today was, made my blood boil. Was this his way of getting back at me? For what? Something I’d done years ago? Something recent? I couldn’t figure it out, but the bitterness in his tone was unmistakable. Still, I didn’t have much of a choice. Emily deserved a happy birthday, and if swallowing my pride meant keeping my job to provide for her, then so be it. “Emily, darling, go to Auntie Jessie,” I said, plastering on a smile to mask my frustration. “She’ll help you get dressed, okay? Mommy has to take care of something really quickly,
**Hailey's POV** The sun streamed into my bedroom, casting a golden glow across the room as I stood in front of the mirror, staring at my reflection. My mind wandered to eight years ago—a day filled with both excruciating pain and immense joy. I had fought tooth and nail to bring my daughter into this world. I smiled at the memory, my eyes misting slightly as pride swelled in my chest. My baby girl wasn’t a baby anymore. She was growing into a smart, curious, and wonderful young lady. Today, she turned eight—a milestone that felt like it came too fast. I turned away from the mirror, wiping a tear that escaped, and walked over to wake her up. She was still bundled under the covers, her small face peeking out as she slept soundly. " Emily, my love, wake up," I said softly, brushing a few strands of hair from her forehead. Her eyes fluttered open, and she blinked sleepily at me. "Mom?" she mumbled, her voice laced with drowsiness. "Happy birthday, sweetheart!" I said, grinning wi
**Hailey’s POV** I stood there, rooted to the bathroom tiles, my heart hammering so loud I was sure Paxton could hear it. His piercing gaze burned into me, a mixture of frustration and something else I couldn’t quite name—pain, maybe? His words echoed in my head, bouncing off the walls of my uncertainty. Why didn’t I tell him about my daughter? The question lingered in the air, suffocating me. I wanted to run. Every nerve in my body screamed at me to turn and bolt, but my feet refused to cooperate. My hands trembled as I clutched my dress, the fabric bunched in my fingers like a lifeline. What could I say? The truth? That the little girl he had no idea existed was his? Or should I lie? Tell him some fabricated story about a nonexistent relationship to push him away? But then he asked again, his voice softer this time but no less intense. "Hailey, why didn’t you tell me? Are you trying to hide her from me?" I swallowed hard, my throat dry as sandpaper. My lips parted, but no so
