“Babe, he’ll be fine. Just breathe.” Marie whispered as she walked Steven King to the hanger where Alden Kings Inc.’s private jet was waiting. It galled her that her fear of flying would prevent her from being physically present to support him.“I don't understand how this happened, Marie. I don't…”“Babe, he’ll be okay. Look at me, Steven.” She said, tugging on his chin so he looked her in the eye.“He’ll be fine, Babe.” Marie said.He pulled her into his arms and clasped her back in a firm hug.“I wish you could come with me.” He mumbled into her hair, before letting out a deep sigh.Could she go with him? She had been having therapy sessions but she wasn't ready yet, and she didn't want to get aboard and create extra problems for him.“I'm sorry, babe.” She whispered and he said,“It's fine. I shouldn't ask you to. I know if you could, you would have offered to come. I love you, Marie. I’ll be back once I get a hold of things. Zed’s in charge but keep an eye on him for me, please?
No, there was absolutely no way Cadence was right.“I know it's a lot to take in but the pictures don't lie.” Cadence said in a whisper.“There's no way he's your mole, Cadence. I know this man.”“Marie. Dump your sentiments and think for a minute. Why's he meeting a brand manager in another agency at that time of the night? In his car too?”She didn't know the answer but she was pretty sure it wasn't because he was the one responsible for leaking all the campaigns.“Did you speak with him at least?” She asked. The man Cadence was alleging committed the crime was one of the most senior partners in Alden Kings Inc. Theodore Stamp was a lovely old man with kind eyes and a brilliant mind that had managed to stay agile and ahead of his contemporaries. Even Steven had come to appreciate his astute wisdom and rely on his wisdom. There was no way he was the one responsible for the leaks. She knew it because she read people fairly well, and she just didn't think Cadence was right.“Alright. A
“I don't think Theodore is your guy, James. It just rubs me the wrong way.”“I hear you, Marie but appearances can be deceiving. Very. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the guy everyone thinks is the bad guy end up as the good guy and the so-called good guy turns out to be the bad one.”“I know but still...” She said, pouring orange juice into James’s glass and then hers. After dinner, Rick had gone to bed and she was in the living room with James, going over the papers Cadence had given her.“Alright. But can you do me a favor? Before confronting Theodore with this, can you look into it on your own?”“Are you convinced about this guy?” James asked after regarding her shrewdly for a while. Because of how chummy James often was, sometimes she forgot the guy was actually a cop.“I'm not certain. I just feel Theodore wouldn't do this.”“Okay Marie, I'd look into it.” He said to which Marie let out an excited squeal.“Now, I need your advice on this matter James because it's eati
“Hey, babe. What's wrong?” Marie's warm voice settled in his chest like the balm he needed to get through this nightmare.“I…I need a drink.” He said, standing abruptly and heading to the kitchen to pour himself one. James hovered around in the doorway, his eyebrows lined with concern. They both looked beside themselves with worry for him. He looked away from them and ran a hand through his hair. He wasn't ready to talk about it yet. Right now, he just craved the warm comfort of his bed.He downed his glass in one gulp and headed towards the elevator with Marie hot on his trail.Once she got off the elevator, she turned to glare at him, her arms crossed over her chest.“What?” He asked in a more gruffer tone than intended.“What do you mean ‘what’?” She said, waving her arms around her.“I’ve been worried sick about you. I nearly lost my mind when you didn't call. Is William okay?” She added the last part in a much softer tone, her eyes searching his face for any sign of trouble.Oh M
“So I got the call from Redwood. You were with me when it came in, Marie. The voice on the other end said my dad had been involved in an accident. Dutiful son that I am, I hop on my company's private jet, burn aviation fuel and begin the five hour trip to Oakland. I arrive at Oakland, and call the number back because after running to Redwood hospital and running through various halls, there’s no William King in any of the ER.”Marie turned to face him then, a question on her lips. Then as if remembering her promise, she cupped her mouth and nodded for him to continue.“Anyway, I call this number back and I hear my dad is back home. I think oh, thank God. He’s probably not too hurt and is recuperating. I race over to the address. I think the first thing that should have shown me things were off was the fact that I was directed to a hotel. Devoted son I am, I went anyway, my heart slamming in my chest. When I get to the lobby, do you know what I found?”Marie, whose eyes were now widen
“I don't know, Marie. He just said it's high time I know the truth. He gave no other context than that.”“The truth about what?” Marie asked in what she hoped was a neutral voice. Had Alden decided to go ahead with telling Steven about her relationship with him even though she had expressly forbade him from doing so?Why was it that everytime she’d decide to tell him, something like this happened?“Marie. I just told you, I don't know what he means. Now, stop fidgeting. I don't even know why you begged to come along.” Steven said, casting her a sidelong glance. She schooled her features into what she hoped was an uninterested look. If Steven found out, would he forgive her? Would he cast her out of his life? She hadn't even been to her house in ages. Maybe she shouldn't have begged to come along. Maybe she should have just packed her things and hightailed it all the way home before he got back from the meeting. She wiped her sweaty palms on her jeans before looking outside the window.
After what felt like several hours later, Steven knocked on the car window. Her eyes remained glued to his face as she unlocked the car and waited for him to speak.Steven King said nothing throughout the ride home, making Marie more miserable with each passing second.Had Alden told him everything? Did he know the whole truth yet? Would he ever forgive her? Sweat beaded her forehead as she stole furtive glances at him. He appeared to be deep in thoughts. He had one hand on the steering wheel and another cupping his mouth. She ached to break the silence between them but was unsure what to say. Maybe there was no need to jump into conclusions. She meant to ask him about what Alden had said, but what came out of her mouth instead was,“We’re going to be late for work.”He nodded but said nothing else. What was with the silence? Was he biding time, waiting for her to confess?“Are you mad at me, Steven?” She asked in a pitiful voice that had Steven glancing at her face in surprise.“Mad
“Theodore. Hello. How good to see you.” She said in a chirpy voice that sounded off even to her ears.“Marie, my dear. It's been a minute. How are you?” Theodore asked in the same cheerful, fatherly voice he had always used with her.“Great. Were you heading out?” Marie asked“I skipped breakfast. I was heading out for an early lunch, my dear. Gotta maintain the one great pack.” He said, chuckling while tapping his belly. Marie laughed along.“Oh. Okay.”“ Do you want to come along? I much prefer a little cafe around the corner. It's quiet this time of the day.” Theodore offered.“Yes please.” Marie said, texting Steven she'd be taking her lunch break early. Poor Theodore. The man had no idea that he was being investigated her by his company and was probably at the risk of being dismissed if she didn't find out the truth fast enough.Okay. Please, I'd like a sandwich. Rick wants grilled cheese, BTW.Theodore noticed her smiling at her phone and said,“I assume that was Steven?”“Yes,
