I didn’t see Nathan at home for two days.

He spent most of his waking hours busy with Alpha tasks, and when he was home, he was sleeping in his bedroom. It seemed that he wasn’t planning on taking back what he said about my dad, and I wasn’t going to get any help with my investigation.

I didn’t want to bother making a scene anymore. Nathan already achieved his goal of using me to ruin his wedding. All that was left now for him to deal with was his father’s anger, but it clearly didn’t matter to Nathan because his father’s anger would only be directed at me anyway.

But I wouldn’t give up the villa that my aunt left me. It was the one thing that I had left to me by my loved ones, and I was going to fight to keep it in my name.

I hated to say it, but I didn’t trust Nathan to do the right thing. What if he found someone else down the road and decided to fight me over the villa again, claiming his purchase of it as having more of a legal standing over my aunt leaving me the deed?

“Olivia?” Nathan furrowed his brow and sat up abruptly, looking both confused and awkward. “What are you doing?”I quickly moved my head away from Nathan, feeling embarrassed that I had just been leaning over him and looking at his long eyelashes.“Um… The officer at the police station wanted me to give this to you,” I said, picking up the bag of black tea and handing it to him as I secretly hoped that he wouldn’t notice my red cheeks. “It smells good. You should drink some now, since you’re clearly tired.”Nathan gave me a puzzled look. “What were you doing at the station?” he asked.I shrugged. “I just wanted to inquire about the issue with the house, but it seems like you’re already on the case. Although, while I was there, the officer mentioned my dad…”Suddenly, Nathan sighed. “Look Olivia,” he said, “I can’t help you with the case about your dad. I’m sorry, but I just can’t. The information is too sensitive, and we could get in trouble if my dad or one of the elders found out th

My dad and I were evicted from the pack when I was just fifteen. Most kids shifted for the first time at age sixteen, so when I left with my dad, neither Nathan nor I had ever shifted yet. On my sixteenth birthday, however, like clockwork, I finally shifted. When I shifted into a wolf with golden fur, though, my dad’s eyes widened.“Olivia, promise me you won’t shift in public,” he said. He made me promise, but I didn’t ever get the chance to find out exactly why. I had a feeling that my wolf might have been special somehow, though. But I didn’t tell Nathan this. Not yet, at least. If I did eventually shift again and my wolf wasn’t anything special, I didn’t want to let anyone down — especially not Nathan.“You shifted before, right?” Nathan asked.I nodded. “A few times,” I replied quietly. “But when my dad died, I think my wolf went into hiding. She’s been dormant ever since.”Nathan’s face fell slightly. “Oh… And you don’t feel your wolf’s presence at all?”I shook my head, then fu

This strange girl seemed familiar…I must have seen her on Nathan’s wedding day, I thought to myself. It was odd, though. I had never met this girl before and Nathan hadn’t mentioned her since I came back. He didn’t have any sisters, either.“Wait here,” Nathan said to me. “I’m going to get my mom so we can find a dress for you for the hunt.”Suddenly, the strange girl grabbed Nathan’s arm and shook her head. I swore I saw her shoot me another disdainful glance, but Nathan didn’t seem to notice.“Mom and dad won’t meet the spy’s daughter,” she said. “They’re both furious.”Nathan let out a sigh and frowned.“Um… I’m Olivia, by the way,” I said, trying to be polite although this girl made me uncomfortable already. “I don’t think we’ve met.”“Oh! Right!” Nathan said, slapping his forehead. “Olivia, this is my adopted sister, Jenifer.”I took in the girl’s appearance. Similarly to Layla, Jenifer was slender and pale, and looked rather frail. However, whereas Layla’s demure appearance mad

Something was a bit uncomfortable about the way that Jenifer looked at me when she poked her head in through the open door. Her smile was warm and affectionate when she looked at Nathan, but when her eyes slid over to me, it felt as though her face stiffened and went coldMaybe she’s just protective, I thought to myself. Nathan was basically her brother, after all.“It’s time to go,” she repeated, looking back at Nathan. “Hurry up. Mom and dad are waiting.”“Right.” Nathan nodded, the blush on his cheeks from looking at me fading away. He cleared his throat and turned to look at me one last time, and his face went red again. “I’ll be waiting for you downstairs if you need to finish up here.”I nodded. “I won’t be long,” I replied. I watched as Nathan scurried off through the door, leaving Jenifer and me alone. I shot her a warm smile, then turned to the mirror to finish fixing my hair. “Thank you for letting me borrow your dress, by the way.”Jenifer shrugged. “I don’t wear it. You ca

The girls in the crowd were staring daggers at me while Nathan wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me close. I felt my face turn beet red, and all I could do was stare down at the stage beneath my feet and wait for this attention to be over.Colin finished his small speech, and then announced Nathan.“My son, the Alpha of our pack, will now announce the beginning of the hunt.”Nathan, with his arm still around me, led me across the stage to the center. He stopped in the middle and looked out over the crowd, holding his champagne glass up with a smile. And then, with the booming voice of a true Alpha, Nathan announced that the hunt would begin.“Thank you all for coming to this year’s Full Moon Day celebration,” he said, his voice ringing out clear and handsomely across the crowd. “May the guardian spirits watch over our hunt and help us catch a good feast!”The crowd clapped and cheered. Nathan sipped his champagne, ending the toast. I sipped my sparkling juice and tried not to

When I looked down at myself to find that my breasts were completely exposed by the fall, I felt my heart sink.I shrieked and covered myself with my arms while the onlookers snickered nastily. Angela stood a little ways away, over by a tree, and I swore that I saw her slipping her phone back into her pocket as though she snuck a picture…Suddenly, Nathan sprung forward and put himself between me and the onlookers. I felt his fur press up against me as he wrapped himself around me. My heart started to pound as I felt the sensation of his silky fur against my skin. The heat coming off of his body made me blush, and all I could do was stare down at the ground nervously.“See?” I heard Angela whisper. “I told you that dress was too tight on her.”I heard another girl, one of Angela’s friends, giggle. “Looks like she’s putting on that baby weight awfully fast…”Nathan whipped around at them and growled angrily. The girls yelped nervously and scattered, along with the rest of the onlookers

Nathan quickly took my arm and led me over to the picnic area.Instantly, I felt eyes on me. I blushed and pulled Nathan’s jacket closer around my shoulders, averting my gaze to the ground.“Hold your head high,” Nathan said. “It’s just a picnic. Come with me; I have to mingle for appearances.”I felt like a statue as I followed Nathan around. He was so outgoing and polite, and so many people seemed to want to talk to him. But I just felt like an outcast who was only following him around like a lost puppy. No one wanted to talk to the traitor’s daughter, either. Especially not when I had a ruined dress and an oversized men’s jacket on.Suddenly, while Nathan was talking to another man who I didn’t immediately recognize, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around to see Jenifer standing there, and my face turned red.“I-I’m so sorry about the dress,” I stammered. “I fell during the hunt and I think I ruined it.”Jenifer’s bulging eyes slowly looked me up and down. There was a long si

Nathan sighed, and shut his eyes for a moment as though he was exasperated with me for simply going on a walk with his sister.“Did you pay attention to where you were walking just now?” he asked.I frowned. “What? What are you talking about?”Nathan pointed down at my dress. “That’s what I’m talking about,” he said. “Didn’t you pay attention?”I furrowed my brow in confusion, and followed his finger down to my dress. As I did, my eyes widened. My dress, which was already dirty from the fall, was now covered in mud and briars all along the hem. What was once a beautiful white dress was now torn and blackened with mud.“I-I must have stepped through mud somehow on our walk,” I said, bending down to pick off some of the prickly briars with my fingers. “I’m sorry. I didn’t notice.”“Olivia…” Nathan lowered his voice, but still sounded a little exasperated. I looked up to meet his stern gaze and instantly noticed that other people were already staring. In particular, Angela and her friend

OliviaI gripped the edges of the podium, my knuckles whitening from the strain as I stared out over the sea of faces. All eyes were trained squarely on me, awaiting my words. But I was frozen.A tremor of nausea wormed its way up my throat as I stared out at them. What was I thinking—how could I have ever agreed to this? Speaking to crowds had never been my forte; that was Nathan’s arena, not mine. I was just the woman behind the scenes, the young mom who had never gone to college, the one who had been handed her job by her husband…Suddenly, a flicker of motion off to the side caught my eye—Nathan, standing just at the edge of the stage with his arms folded across his chest. Even from this distance, I could feel the weight of his steady gaze, that piercing Alpha stare that always seemed to see straight into the depths of my soul.He must have sensed my faltering because, slowly, deliberately, he offered me the faintest of smiles and a single, reassuring nod.And just like that, the

Olivia I looped my arm through Nathan’s as we stepped down from the podium, the applause from the crowd and the flashing of cameras having finally subsided after what felt like an eternity. “It’s over,” Nathan beamed, giving my arm a squeeze. “That wasn’t so bad.” I couldn’t help but grin back at him. “No, it wasn’t. You were great up there.” And he really had been great; the press conference had been an overwhelming success—any lingering doubts or trepidation we had harbored before had been utterly blown away by the sheer force of the crowd’s enthusiastic response. For so long, it had felt like we were fighting this battle alone, like the victims who had suffered under Dan’s horrific operation were little more than nameless, faceless casualties. But today, we had finally given them a voice. Their stories had reached the masses, had resonated and struck a chord with everyone who watched. Nathan had handled all of the questions that were thrown his way with poise and ease

OliviaI rapped my knuckles lightly on the door to Nathan’s office. A moment later, his voice called out, “Come in.”Stepping into the room, I placed my hands on my hips upon seeing the scene in front of me: Nathan was standing in front of the mirror, his shirt still untucked and his tie loosened. His desk was a mess of papers and folders, and it was clear that he had been checking over his notes last-minute before the press conference.

OliviaI wiped a bead of sweat from my brow, slowly turning to survey the progress that had been made in the park. The banners we had hung were a bold purple color, signifying our support of the women who had been affected by the trafficking ring.I couldn’t help but smile a bit as I looked at our progress. With the press conference today, followed by a festival to help raise funds for the shelter we were building, the park was bustling with activity as our pack members worked hard

NathanI leaned back in my chair with a weary sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose in a futile attempt to stave off the encroaching headache. Spread out on my desk was an array of file folders, legal pads scrawled with notes, and printed transcripts—a minefield of information that would need to be carefully navigated on the day of the upcoming press conference. It had been two weeks since Dan and Montgomery’s bodies were found in the confinement pit, and it had been a dizzyin

OliviaThe air coming through the open windows smelled like the fresh sea breeze as we made our way from room to room, touring every nook and cranny of the newly completed cottage. It was perfect—cozy and quaint, while still boasting all the modern amenities one could want. But more than that, it was a sanctuary, a haven.A fresh start.

OliviaThe sound of power tools outside streamed in through the window while I folded the laundry, a distant backdrop to my swirling thoughts. I had grown used to the sound, and actually kind of enjoyed it. It was a reminder that life went on, that our family was growing. It had been a couple of weeks since I had made the decision to take a temporary leave from work in order to really focus on my family—on rebuilding that long-severed bond with my mother—and I was glad I did.

NathanI couldn’t stop the rage from simmering just beneath the surface as I made my way through the darkened forest toward the confinement pit. No one knew I was here—I was coming under the cover of night, my hair and face concealed by a hood. But I had to come. I couldn’t stop thinking about Dan and Montgomery, and I needed to see them.
