It was a long back Damien had left the cabin but Eden was still in her chair. She didn't even seem to be in a hurry to leave the cabin as she tried to brace herself.
But no matter how much she tried to come up with a way out, she couldn't reach a conclusion.
She didn't know why Clarke didn't come to the office today. But she couldn't reach the conclusion that Clarke was well aware of Damien asking her to do this.
She didn't know if it was a good idea, she called Clarke but much to her disappointment, the voicemail response came to her hearing for her every attempt.
Destiny seemed to be playing a prank on her. A very frightening one to be specific that would cost her so well planned life of hers meeting a dead end in no moment.
How come her life reached this point? Eden wondered for a moment.
What should she do?
It wasn't a marriage that Damien was looking forward to but a game. A game that she never thought of taking a part in. Not even in her worst dream.
The shopping bag from Nicci was staring at her mockingly. She didn't dare to reach for it. Instead, leaving it untouched, she exited the cabin as well as the office building.
The guards at the entrance got confused seeing her like this. Normally, on her way in and out, Eden used to spend a few minutes with them, talking about normal stuff or getting updated about her unknown happenings in the office. But today with her mind roaming far away, she couldn't get herself to do it.
Flashing a forced smile wordlessly, she walked past them and made her way on the sideway by the road. Her phone rang off, pulling her out of her gloomy thoughts. She took out the phone and the caller ID got her even more worried. It was Brenda. For some reason, she couldn't get herself to answer the call.
Brenda was one of her best friends who was included in her plan. She was supposed to be a partner and work with her parents in the bakery. Baking cake and eating it were her favorite things.
The things she was supposed to ensure to make happen this time. From childhood Brenda had always helped her, be it in part time jobs or studying, or spending nights in the hospital with her when her father was admitted there.
Walking thoughtlessly for how long Eden didn't know, she got on the bus. She scanned the bus all around. No seat was left unoccupied today and no one seemed to be in a hurry to get down from the bus. Just thirty minutes of the ride and standing all the way. Eden thought in mind. It wasn't the first time for her to do it and it wasn't a problem after all.
As soon as she stood holding support, her mind again diverted to her earlier thoughts. For a moment, Eden considered being a cook like her mother and start the business of a restaurant with whatever she had in savings till now.
But she knew it wasn't going to work. In the case of cooking, Eden had made it to know the basic just. With the expert in her place, she never got the chance of learning more let alone handle the kitchen.
Besides, her mother would never agree to it she knew for sure. Rather she would start looking for a job from the very next moment.
And honestly, she wasn't even ready to opt for this new thing as a passion in her life and go through a midlife crisis. Damien didn't have to go through this type of thing for sure, but she had lived her all life like this until Clarke offered her the job and she wasn't ready to relive it again.
But still, she wasn't going to agree with Damien. She would surely think of a way real quick and sort it out. Maybe Clarke would be in the office the next day and she would be able to cut this crap short real quick.
If this got to happen, then it would be the best. But then Damien's words rang in her mind only to get her to face the cruel reality once more.
~~
A worried Brenda reached her as soon as she made an appearance at the entrance of her house, "Edie, you are late. Where were you? I was calling you since long back."
"When?" Eden lied and rummaged through her bag to take out the phone.
"Oh, it's on silent mode." Eden said as she turned to Brenda, "Sorry, I didn't know." and forced an apologetic smile.
Brenda nodded at her and then spoke up, "Okay. Come. We have prepared a new recipe for our soon to be an opening bakery, you know. Take a bite and give your review."
Eden took a glance at her mother who got near smilingly. Evangeline was no exception here. Excitement was all over the place.
She spoke up otherwise though, "Go, get freshen up first. Then come downstairs."
Nodding at her mother, Eden made her way to her room. Slumming the bag on the table, she walked to the washroom.
Though it was the same face, she saw every day in the mirror, she stood for some extra time facing herself, staring at her reflection.
Her all life flashed in front of her eyes and her determination to keep her family happy got even firmer. But..
~~
It was late at night.
Eden turned to her left and there was Brenda, peacefully sleeping. With Cassandra out of town, she had decided to stay over here, not willing to go back to the apartment alone that she and Cassandra shared.
Eden had woken up after having a nightmare of getting thrown out of their apartment because she was unable to pay the rent, her father getting ill being out of medicine and whatnot.
And if she dare not listen to Damien, there was a real possibility, that it would be turned into reality. It was getting her scared like never before.
There and then she realized, it was a one way direction for her thoughts. Because marrying Damien Etheridge, the billionaire heir wasn't going to cost her anything except morality to some extent but the thought of doing otherwise was a dare.
A dare she wouldn't even dare to think.
At least not now when she got a hold of her family. Her mother was so happy after a long time, and so was Brenda.
Not when the monthly expenditure like the medicinal bill for her father and their apartment rent would be due soon.
~~
The next day when she waited at the door of the cabin for Clarke, praying desperately for only him to reach the office, Damien showed up instead and with that, her little thought of doing otherwise faded in the thin air.
Taking a glance at her, Damien walked into the cabin with no word uttered. Eden was thinking about what to do when she heard Damien's authoritative voice, "Come in."
Shrugging other thoughts, Eden pulled the door open and got in. But before she could say something, Damien spoke up, "I see you forgot your stuff here." and gestured at the shopping bag on the desk.
Damien didn’t expect her to leave it here. He would have thought Eden had left the job here itself and declined his offer as well but her standing at the door said otherwise.
"What will I have to do actually?" Eden said shrugging off his question.
Damien leaned back on his chair, happy to see his plan working, and spoke up with a not so warm smirk, "For now, make me a coffee and then tell me how my day looks Iike today?"
Eden thought of a smart comeback but stopped her from spilling it out. What’s the point when she would have nothing to do but oblige anyway?
As Eden stepped out of the cabin, she sighed. Nothing was going as per her anticipation. When she took up the offer of working as the PA for Clarke, she didn’t know she was signing up for this actually but now she knew this was going to be her life.
If the game of their marriage came to light, her family would be distraught beyond imagination but only if she could make it remain a secret, her life would go on smoothly like now. Her parents and Brenda dreaming of the soon to be opened bakery.
With a steamy hot coffee and her notepad, Eden got into the cabin within minutes after knocking and getting permission.
Placing the coffee cup on the desk in front of Damien, she enlightened him about his schedule.
For the time being Eden was talking, Damien was staring at her.
She wasn’t the type of girl with whom Damien had been until now. Where his choice of girls was concerned, he never just settled for any girl. His choice was way far from just average girls. High class models, celebrities, actresses, announcers, and far from just average girls who wore tailored office suits, thick frame glasses, and make a ponytail.
Eden was an average girl but it didn’t irritate him. What irritated him was being so out of his league still, not falling for his charms was bad enough. Because he didn’t meet a girl who hadn’t spent time gawking at him and trying to get his attention to her using any means.
Eden was a bright exception in this matter. She seemed to be very desperate for getting him out of her way which triggered and intrigued him to get her on the board when he was pretty sure some other girls from his acquaintances would suit the role perfectly and match his taste as well.
The day got passed maintaining the hectic schedule and at the end of the day when Eden informed Damien that she was leaving, he asked her to talk to Clarke about her consent to marry him.
Eden gave him a confused look, "I have to talk to Mr. Etheridge?"
Damien spoke up with a smile, "Since you are so eager to marry me, it’s only fair for you to talk to my Dad. Don’t you think?"
Eden was so tempted to work on his handsome face with her clenched fist and wipe off the stupid smile, but she found herself nodding at him instead, "Of course. It’s the only fair thing to do."
Eden really didn't think Damien would make her do this. But then talking to Clarke Etheridge wasn't a problem here but talking to her parents was. Eden thought. She could see it would be the next ridiculous thing she had to do. Out of nowhere, she couldn't just start saying to her parents that she wanted to marry the billionaire heir, the son of her boss. They knew really well about Eden's choice not to mention the person from her college time. Eden never hid anything from her parents but this time.. If not this, then what? Eden thought for a moment. There was no way she was going to say she fell in love with him and would like to marry him. She mentally groaned at this thought. When she remained quiet in her place at night, her parents could feel something was wrong with Eden but no matter how much they tried to talk to Eden, she just said about work pressure and all. Even if they weren't convinced but they didn't push her to speak up right now because they knew sooner or later,
Well aware that every pair of eyes were only on her, Eden stirred in her seat. She knew it would sound ridiculous but as she already said this, she should go ahead as well. Nodding at her thought, she added softly, "I want a Summer wedding." Damien knitted his brows at her, not liking the idea at all. It looked like Eden had all the time but for him in the next weekend, he was turning 29, reaching the finish line, his father gave him for choosing his girl. He considered for a moment. Even if Clarke might not say anything to him with this now but.. Not like he was so desperate to marry Eden but Clarke would surely smell the rat if they pushed it this far as Summer was still months away. No one said a word for some time. Caroline looked upset as her dreamy plan seemed to have to wait to be executed. But then with a thought, she turned to Eden, "Eden, we won't push you for it, dear. Your wedding will happen when you want it." "And that is never." Eden thought and let out a sigh of
Eden's POV Did you ever pray that your ears should serve you wrong sometimes? Well, I am praying for that now very desperately to happen to me as I asked again to hear otherwise. But for the third time, he said the same thing as he glanced back at my laptop. His tone seemed to be quite irritated this time, "The folder is empty, Eden." My legs walked near on their own to have a check for myself. After getting confirmed about my file being gone, I turned around. Everyone seemed to be confused except for Damien. He was staring at me coldly and as if I could read his thoughts. I would be so dead if I happened to mess it up. But it didn't bother me as much as his look from last day that was saying he did know already that I was going to mess it up and I somehow did it. After spending a sleepless night, I was feeling somewhat sleepy a little back but now as per the demand of the situation, I was all awake. Not just wake but I felt suffocating. To get myself together and to catch
Eden's POV "Didn't you hear me? Coffee, two cups." Damien yelled at me. Groaning mentally, I made my way to the refreshment counter. What the hell is going on here! He should at least keep his personal life and professional life separate. The way Laura smiled at him, anyone could tell they didn't have just boss employee relationship but beyond that. Then why the hell he was trying to get married to me! Laura would have been perfect for this role. Then why me! Leaving the thought aside, I made two cups of coffee and made my way back to Laura's cabin. Damien was saying something but just with me appearing at the doorway, he stopped. Like I care! Without bothering to look anywhere, I placed the coffee on the desk and left from there. I thought Clarke would still be in the office but no. After the meeting, he was nowhere to be seen. I barely settled on my chair after entering my cabin when Damien barged into it. His face was cold as ever when he said, "You look bonkers. Take a h
Author's POV When Eden was out for doing the asked, Laura was about to open her mouth but one glance from Damien kept her lips sealed. Damien took a few strides and stood near the window wall seeing down the streets, the bustling city. After one minute or two when he turned to Laura, his look was as cold as ever, "What did you do?" "Damien, I.." Laura started but with the look getting colder, she corrected herself, "Mr. Etheridge, I didn't do anything." "In that case.." Damien's words got interrupted when the door pushed open and Eden entered the cabin. He waited for Eden to say something or at least stay there but all she did was leave from there. He didn't stop her though. He turned to the tray with two cups of coffee. One of them he thought for was Eden actually when he asked. Anyways he reached for one and again stood leaning against the window wall as he took a sip. "What's the progress of getting an announcer? You were working on that." Damien changed the direction of his
Eden stood still at her place as her eyes stubbornly stayed at Damien. His face was gleaming under the bright lights. The masculine jawline looked sharper and firm. His hair looked glossy. Damien was looking far way more handsome in his three-piece suit; a white smooth, cotton shirt, black skinny pants, and slim fit blazer. Damien's laughter dried down when he caught the sight of Eden staring at him. Her eyes strangely looked mesmeric to him today that was not covered with the thick frame glasses that he had been seeing since the very first day of their encounter. His eyes took her appearance in effortlessly and then turned to her face again. Both held each other's gaze for a moment or two before Caroline took Eden to the place where Damien was standing and introduced her to the people who weren't many in number. Just the family members of Damien and some close relatives to be specific. The pleasantries were shared for a good long time and then Damien and Eden were made to stand f
Damien's POV This girl's foolish bravery really amuses me sometimes. What does she think of me actually? "Okay. If it's what you want, I don't mind changing it." I said smiling back at Eden. Her smile died down but Mom's face lit up like a kid at a candy store as she said, "That's like my son." Before I could speak up again, Mom spoke up, "Okay. Now let's go downstairs. Everyone is waiting for you." Nodding at her, we two followed her in tow out of my room and then downstairs. After spending a good few moments, having dinner together and all, Eden along with her family were about to leave. As much as they insisted on not bothering us, Mom was stubborn enough to get them to agree to her demands. Though letting them go by our cars was enough, Mom asked me and Nate to drop them off. So, obviously Eden was with me in my car as I trailed behind the car, Nate was driving other members of Eden's family and her friends home. Breaking the silence and getting things normal, I thought of
Author's POV... As much as Eden wanted to ignore it, she couldn't. This was a normal meeting and Eden was needed to take notes if necessary that she had done it so many times but today things started to go down in another way. Simon Henderson wasn't fully concentrated on the meeting as well. Instead, his eyes were wandering around Eden every few moments. Eden for a few moments stood pale-faced as her past started greeting her after years but then tried to get herself together. She tried to focus on the meeting, praying for it to end as soon as possible. When it finally came to its, as usual, successful ending, she didn't know whether to be happy or angry. With her given situation, she didn't want to give Damien another reason to blackmail her. When Simon left the cabin with his PA following behind, Damien spoke up as he turned the pages of the file they just signed, "You can leave now." Eden wasn't needed to say it twice and made her way out somewhat relieved that she would have
Finally, the day reached. The wedding day... The most important day of every person's life. Standing in front of the mirror, Damien looked at his reflection, adjusting his cuffs and moving a hand over the Armani suit, he was wearing. Today was the day when he would be taking vows for a lifelong commitment to his love without bothering to think about what the future was holding on to. But whatever be it, he would make it as long as Eden was with him. Suddenly, he felt like talking to Eden and called her immediately.Eden was just done getting ready and her friends were also out of her room when her mother entered. "You are looking so beautiful, honey."Her mother stared at her as she continued with her eyes getting glossy. "Time flies so fast, doesn't it? You were just a little girl and now you are getting married. I am so happy for you that you are about to start your new family with Damien. He really loves you a lot." Evangeline said. Eden could feel her mother was happy for her
27th May_ It was decided for the date of Damien and Eden's wedding. The press released the date and wedding fever hit the town almost immediately. Though Eden wanted a simple wedding, Caroline had made it very clear she would not be cheated out of her one chance to throw the grandest wedding Rock Castle had ever seen. The wedding of Damien was a dream come true for her and she was determined to make their special day the talk of the town for years to come. It was just two days now before the wedding and the preparation was going on in full swing. Damien wanted to get involved in some arrangements but with Eden's too much of worries and Nathaniel threatening to tell the truth about his donating kidney to his father, he didn't. Eden wasn't allowed to do anything. Her going to the office was prohibited as well. All she was asked to take proper rest or sleep which was necessary to get the bridal glow according to Caroline and her friends. Eden's parents couldn't be happier finding he
"Why?" Eden looked up at Damien, "Why did you do it?""What did I even do?" Damien tried to feign ignorance as he quickly threw his shirt on, his hands busy buttoning it up."About the kidney, you were the donor, right?" Eden snapped as she got up and walked closer. "Eden, I_""It should have been me. He is my father. You didn't need to be this way, Damien." Eden's heart started feeling heavy all of a sudden. She had read about the side effects of kidney donation. For her, it was okay but if something happened to Damien, how would she handle it knowing for her he was like that?"Eden, I just wanted to see you happy and I did what it took me for having your smile back." Damien said as he got near and cupped her face gently. He wasn't sure if he would do that but after seeing her breaking down on the sidewalk, it wasn't in him to stop himself from going down that route."Even if you have to hurt yourself along the way?" Eden asked. It wasn't like a question though. It was more of a sta
Eden tossed on her bed for hours wondering about the reason behind Damien's sudden mood change at the restaurant. Did she do something wrong? Was it about their early wedding decision? But he only said he wanted to marry her. Then_ The memory of her meeting Tristan popped into her mind. Did he see them together then? She wondered. It seemed to be making sense as just after that she found him in a foul mood. But Tristan was only wishing her luck with him. Anyways, if it was the matter, he should have just asked her about it. Shouldn't he? She reached for her phone to call him right then but the time was 1 in the morning and it changed her decision. She didn't intend to disturb his sleep. Taking a mental note to talk to Damien about it first thing after her going to the office the next morning, she left her mind at rest and at some point, fell asleep. The next day, when Eden entered Damien's cabin in the morning, he wasn't in yet. She set his desk and made her way out to make his c
The weekend was total bliss for Eden. She felt as if she was living a dream. Damien seemed to be the prince charming she was waiting for to come. With him, she totally forgot about her past with Simon. With Damien, she felt warmth, loved, and secured like never before. Not to mention, she loved the feeling. She felt like she could forget all her worries, her heartache and all. She felt like she was at the edge of the cliff about to fall, but with Damien behind her ready anytime to hoist her up. Damien's parents were back and they were angry with them for a while as well for not informing them about Eden's father. But then he was okay now and above that, they couldn't be happier seeing Damien and Eden this much affectionate to each other. Things took a turn in the other direction as Damien's mother proposed for the early wedding. They were left to take the decision of the wedding date and all by themselves though. It would have been easy for Damien if Eden would have opposed it as
The sun was down long back and the numerous stars in the sky were providing light making the night gracefully lit up. Eden and Damien were still sitting by the beach on the sand.Eden stared at Damien being amused as he laughed while sharing his happy times on this beach with his cousins and parents. It wasn't an arrogant smirk or something. The smile was genuine. It was for the first time she saw him opening up to her like this and not to mention she loved it. She would have fallen in love with him if she wasn't already. When Damien sensed her intense gaze on him, he smirked and before Eden could move her gaze away, he crashed his lips on hers. Eden was stunned for a moment but then she responded to his kiss with the same passion and intensity. Their lips moved in sync sensually. Damien's one hand trailed to her back pulling her closer, carefully resting on her hips, massaging the fabric of her dress.Though the touch wasn't direct, Eden felt the electricity flowing all over her body
"You aren't peeking, are you?" Damien asked as he led Eden somewhere with his hand covering her eyes. As the air was gotten clear between them, they immediately remembered it was supposed to be their first date actually. Damien said he had a surprise for her. If Eden felt excited about it, Damien was somewhat nervous. He didn't let it get his best though. It was for the first time, he was doing it for a girl and he wanted Eden to enjoy it. "I am not, Damien." Eden smiled. She really didn't think of Damien doing this type of cheesy stuff rather she thought him to be rude, arrogant, selfish, in short, a self-centered person. She was happy that she was proved wrong though. "Wait, I may have to pick you up." Damien said and before Eden could say something, she felt his arms wrapped around the back of her thighs and shoulders hauling her up. A gasp left her mouth. "Relax." Damien whispered hoarsely and when he sensed Eden would open her eyes any moment, he spoke up again, "And don't o
Eden couldn't believe that paparazzi had already found them here. She turned to Damien who looked unaffected at the whole thing as if it were just a normal thing for him. But then he was most probably used to this type of thing by now. Not to mention he didn't just get the title of being one month prince out of nowhere. Besides, she had seen him facing journalists straight and doing lots of TV interviews in her short time with him. She was with him sometimes but her role was standing behind him as his secretary in a tailored suit. But today seeing her like this with Damien, they would never think of them that way for sure.Any moment now, she would be added to the list as one of the women, Damien had fun with.Just at the thought, she was hurt. She never thought things would end up like this for her. The excitement she felt earlier had died long back as her face got darkened in embarrassment and pain.Damien frowned at her expression as Eden had her head bowed down. He couldn't g
Damien reached his cabin a little bit late than usual. He was thinking about taking another day off and spend with Eden but after hearing her, he couldn't think himself of doing it anymore. A file was opened in front of him but his mind was wandering about other obvious things. But the more he was thinking into the matter, the more he was enraged. Why wasn’t Eden seeing he was totally into her? Why was he being taken in the wrong way for whatever he did? When would he hear something good from her? When would she have a little bit of trust in him as in trust in them? He was hell worried for her whereas she was thinking he was spending his time with some other girl! Nathaniel entered his cabin knocking once. Placing a file on his desk, he sat across from Damien, waiting for Damien to acknowledge his presence but he seemed to be lost in some thoughts. Getting enough of his silence, he spoke up, "What's the matter? You weren't even supposed to be here today." Damien was startled for
