Chapter 167: Alphas

Tom peered through the scope on his rifle. Small figures moved in the inky darkness near the edge of the ocean. He took a deep breath, stuck his pinky and index finger in his mouth, and whistled a long high note. Short whistles responded. He tested the wind then looked through the scope again. He spotted the target, a group of Alphas on the sand bar. He took a deep breath and pulled the trigger on the exhale. Six more shots rang out around him. Four Alphas fell with shots directly to their heads.

The others scattered. Tom scouted the beach with his scope but saw none. He whistled a long low note this time. From below, numerous low notes whistled back. He continued combing the streets with his scope. He caught motion at the corner of a building and didn't hesitate. He squeezed the shot, but couldn't tell if it hit its mark.
