Alex awoke suddenly. Her clothes clung to her hot body. Her eyes darted to the corners of the dark room.

Jack stirred next to her and mumbled, "It's just a bad dream."

"I know," she whispered and rolled slowly out of bed. She tiptoed through the dark to the large master bathroom. She tapped the wall screen and the lights went bright. She slapped them two more times and it dimmed. Her eyes unsquinted and she flicked the panel to fill the large bath inset in the floor in the middle of the room. Immediately, the large bowl started to fill. She stripped and settled her naked pregnant body down on to the seat as the hot water rose to surround her.

Her eyes closed. She had seen him again, the man with the green eyes. He'd called her name softly, "Alex-. Alex. I've been searching for you." The man's face appeared and the eyes faded from green to grey-blue, almost ice blue but warmer. Like Jack's eyes. Heat emanated inside her and she opened her eyes. The water was starting to envelop her n

Tom's leg bounced up and down as he sat impatiently waiting for the pod to reach the restaurant. His cuff read "18:25". He looked at the simple gold ring on his left hand as he wrung his hands together. A message flashed on his cuff and he turned to read it."Kena: I got a seat. S87."He flicked his fingers above the cuff and the message dutifully spelled out: "Almost there."He sent it off with a curt motion and went back to wringing his hands. He had to get himself together. He ran his fingers through his dyed dark hair to give them something else to do. He pulled on the strands and tried to focus on something other than his nervousness. The pod slowed and opened, revealing a candlelit walkway edged by shrubbery that led to a castle-like structure. He stepped out and tried not to rush to the door, which opened on its own accord. The seating attendant looked up as he entered. "Welcome to Moe's," she said with a small curtsy."Thank you. Seat-" He looked down at his cuff. "S87?"

A dinner of garlic butter oysters linguini was served and was incredibly delicious. They finished with a chocolate fondue served with various cakes and fruits for dipping. Throughout the meal, Brooke's foot had been climbing its way up his leg and now was firmly rubbing his crotch. The lack of table cloth had not actually stopped her and occasionally he would notice looks of the passersby in the hallway, but she seemed not to care. She finished the rest of the fruit with one last bite and stood. "I'm going to the ladies room before we leave. I think that wine went right through me." Her cheeks were a rosy pink, but she walked steadily as she left out the door and down the hall.Brooke was gone for ten minutes before Tom noticed a message on his cuff from her. "Man here. Come get me. Going to make a break for it."Tom leaped to his feet and dashed down the hallway. He knocked one couple aside as he rushed past them, apologizing on the fly. He finally reached the ladies room and saw

Alex stared out the side of the pod which was set to a clear screen showing the dark empty ocean. Abigail sat next to her and hummed a cheery tune. It had been a few weeks since her bath incident and Alex felt like the nightmares were getting worse. Jack insisted they were just part of being pregnant and being under a lot of stress from the campaign. It made sense, but it didn't make her feel much better. She absently stroked her round belly, one more month to go. The docking port opened for their pod and let them on to the superhighway. The pod shuddered as the wheels protruded and set against the tube. They sped away smoothly as the pod caught up with traffic. It was funny to her that this is probably the exact same thing she would have been doing if Henry was still alive. Jack had just sort of stepped in and taken his place. Maybe that was the reason for her nightmares. Was Jack becoming too much like Henry? She dismissed the thought quickly. She had seen the real Jack. He was th

Alex stiffened. Oh god, Henry wasn't dead. He wasn't dead. He really wasn't dead.Jack shook her gently to gain her focus. "Act the same. I will send for you, I promise. We will get out of here together."Alex nodded. She stared into his beautiful eyes. It didn't matter the color, they were wondrous, warm, and loving. How could she have mistaken anyone else for him?She leaned forward to him. He met her halfway. His mouth covered hers and his soft tongue caressed hers. He drew her into his chest, holding her against him, pregnant belly and all. Liquid fire dripped through her. It heated her all the way to her core with loving warmth. She absorbed strength from his embrace. It fortified her and she felt renewed. She felt alive again as if the past months or even the past year had all just been some game. It had been a game, a game she fell for.He relaxed his grip on her and let her reluctantly step away. This was the real Jack, her Jack. And now she'd have to leave him again. She a

Jack leaned back in the pod's chair and rubbed his temples. All these meetings with people made it harder to stay on top of creating events. He was relying on his team now to come up with ideas. He was not really the idea man anymore. He was more like the man who approved and presented others' ideas. At least he had the board members in his pocket and Henry seemed to like him. He resisted a full body shudder. He'd been so good at pretending to be James up until now. He just had to keep on it. He wouldn't let Alex down.Jack mulled over his current proposal to Henry in his mind as the pod zoomed along towards his neighborhood. He'd have to get Henry to agree to bring Alex to the debate, but how was he going to get her free? The pod slowed and parked itself in the garage of his house. He walked up the stairs to the main room and found it empty. He looked around. Dinner appeared to be started, but Lexi was nowhere in sight."Maya?" He called as he looked over the top of the couch. Alex sat alone in her living room. Well, Henry's living room. Everything was not hers anymore since Henry wasn't actually dead. She pressed a piece of matching puzzle into place on the table before her. The tour had rattled her. She couldn't help reliving every moment with fake Jack over and over. She tried to pinpoint exactly when things started to go wrong. Was it the tennis courts? Or was it before that? The lock at the door turned from the other side. A man walked through, not a man she recognized, but one that was dressed like someone she did. He had long brown hair tied in a ponytail and a trimmed beard. He was dressed as Henry had been, but when he turned to her, he was a completely different person, a hybrid even."Hi baby, did you miss me?"Alex hesitated a moment. Was this for real? "Hi sweetie," she replied hesitantly."Is something wrong, baby? Are you feeling okay? You look pale. Can I get you something?" He rushed to her side and held his hand up to her forehead.Ale

Alex held her stomach as the pod approached the International Representative Combouya. She was fighting waves of nausea. She wasn't sure if it was nerves, excitement, or the baby. Maybe all three. She hadn't heard from Jack, but he was supposed to be here at the debate. She had been covering her dislike of fake Jack and her complete revulsion of Henry. At least the fake Jack was nice. There were little things that he did that made her forgive herself for not noticing. If it had been Henry the whole time, she was sure she would have noticed something wrong earlier. Probably.Abigail held her hand out to help Alex out of the pod when it finally stopped."Are you feeling okay?" She asked. "You look a little pale"Alex waved her off. "I'm fine. The baby is fine, too. Don't worry so much."Abigail nodded a tight smile on her lips. "We've come to a private entrance, so things should be calmer." She led her down a path from the docking ports to the large complex hall. Alex could hear the

"What the hell is going on here?" Henry's voice echoed through the hall as he approached. His army of guards followed him.Henry stood over them now. "What is going on here?" His voice edged with anger.Jack jumped but thought quickly. They needed to maintain their cover. If Alex wasn't in a state to leave they would have to change their plans. "Sir, your wife has gone into labor," Jack said, still holding Alex's hand. "The doctor was here attending to another patient but isn't with an ambulance. I'm hoping more are on the way.""Someone call an ambulance!" Henry snapped. One of his guards held his earbud and requested it for him.Henry knelt in front of Alex's slumped form, careful not to step near the blood. "How's the baby?" He asked, his question directed towards Brooke."This isn't a good sign. The baby's heartbeat is weak.""James." Henry's green eyes penetrated Jack's. "I need you right now. Jack woke with a splitting headache. The white tile ceiling above him looked like that of a hospital room. He gave an inward sigh. The last time had been three months. He wondered how long it had been this time. His fingers felt tight and his hand cramped. He looked over to see they were taped together with someone else's hand. He blinked the sleep from his eyes. As his vision cleared, he saw Alex lying on the cot next to him. Their tactical suits had been removed but the tech suit remained. Both of them were layered in blankets strapped to wires. He racked his brain and remembered the nova they had set off. The third one in a row must have taken its toll.He sent heat into Alex's hand. Her eyes blinked opened. She pulled at her taped hand and then used her free hand to rub her eyes. She looked around. "What's going on?""Wish I knew," Jack answered. She quirked a smile, then pushed the covers back. "It's kind of hot in here, isn't it?""Is it? I can't really tell." Jack sat up, l

The rumbling throughout the Sanctuary stilled as the battle above drew silent. Tom turned to Jimmy. Jimmy nodded and the team climbed to the Surface. After the light, the tunnel, and the door, they emptied out onto the street. Their men looked tired but had smiles on their faces. The team leaders directed them on searches to find any survivors, whether they were friend or foe."Has anyone seen Alex?" Jimmy shouted.Several people shook their heads.Jimmy turned to his team. "Let's spread out. Knowing them, they'll be up somewhere high."The team diverged. Tom searched on his own, always keeping at least his pistol at the ready. The sun slipped over the horizon casting the buildings in a deep twilight glow. Tom climbed the stairs on several buildings to the top but didn't find anything except dead bodies and empty bullet casings. After five buildings, the night settled in. The tanks disappeared back down into the tunnel. Jimmy recruited more people to help search. Armor-clad bodies

Someone was calling his name. At least he thought. There it was again. Tom blinked. The room was black and hazy."Tom?" Jimmy's face loomed above him."What happened?""A fireman got to you. Are you alright?"Tom wiggled his fingers. He could feel the skin pulling across his arm as he moved. "I'll be okay, just a few blisters." He pushed back to his feet, climbing up over the top of the dead Alphas.Their power suit clad soldiers surrounded the room with guns drawn. Bullets covered the floor along with bodies of the Alphas and a few of his team members. His stomach twisted at the loss of good men.Jimmy put a hand on the shoulder of his power armor. "They died saving us. We need to get moving. We've gotten ten so far. We'll finish a sweep and then start clearing the level below."Tom nodded. "Let's go."Jimmy led the way. His team fell in behind him as they jogged down the streets checking building to building. The battle had tightened in around the Sanctuary. The noise of it s

The three of them sat dressed in black tactical gear layered over Alpha tech suits. Alex's dirty face watched Jack as he tightened down the straps on her suit."We stick together, okay. No running off and playing hero on your own," Jack warned. He looked at Lexi while he said it."I thought you were going to make me stay in the pod," Lexi said."I would but it won't be safe there.""I don't think it will be any safer with us," Alex said in a low tone.Jack turned to Alex. "At least we will be able to keep an eye on her. She tends to always find trouble when I tell her to stay put."Alex's eyes flashed to Lexi. "Don't I know it."Lexi rolled her eyes. "If it weren't for me, you guys wouldn't be together, or maybe you'd even be dead.""Watch your tone young lady," Alex warned.Lexi grinned. Jack reached over and touched Alex's shoulder. "Wake up, love."Alex squeezed her eyes shut and rubbed at them with the back of her hands smearing the soot across her face. "How long has it been?" She looked over at Lexi sleeping in a reclined chair. He reached his hand out and wiped at a smudge with his thumb. It only made it worse but she smiled at the touch. "About six hours," he said."You shouldn't have let me sleep so long. You need rest, too.""I got a few hours. Don't worry so much."Alex looked out the pod screen. "I can't help it. I'm finally free of Henry's terror, but now I feel like we're on the verge of losing it all."Jack's mouth drew down in a frown. "It's not going to be pretty. Ellie messaged me before we left her range. Looks like the Alphas are ahead of us by a few hours. When we get there, we will have to fight through them to get to the base."Alex nodded. "Did you see much of it when you visited? It's huge.""No, I only really had one thing on my mind at

Tom sat at the table drumming his fingers. "Does anyone actually know how to work these computers other than Ellie?"The five people working the screen didn't look up.Jimmy crossed his arms over his chest. "Just give them time.""General, the ships are in place.""Good," Janice said, leaning over the tech's workstation. "Anyone have a status on the Alphas?""They're closing in. The ships are taking them out now.""It looks like they are floating topside. Orders?""There's nothing the ships can do up there. Tell them to concentrate on as many darts as they can. Send runners topside and tell them to prepare." Janice turned to Jimmy and Tom. "That's your cue. Do your best."Tom saluted and Jimmy nodded. They turned out into the hall. Their teams waited for them, strapped with weapons and power armor. Tom donned the power armor helmet, gave a nod to Jimmy, and led his team away.As they walked down the halls, they passed locked doors to apartments. Their people, the ones that wer

They were going to make it. Somehow, they were going to make it. He tilted his face down and pressed his lips to hers. The liquid electricity filled him. He could feel the energy building in them. Alex stood locked in a small empty room the size of a utility closet. The walls lay bare except for the light switch. She flicked at the walls, but the screens were disabled and didn't respond. She paced back and forth, rubbing the Vice at her neck. Her bare feet didn't make a sound as they worked the white tile of the floor. She had to figure a way out of here. She needed to find Brooke and Tom. They had to be free. They were only here because of her. This was her problem, her world, not theirs. She flicked her palm open and drew a fireball. Her insides were still hot, but the pull of energy from just one fireball was tremendous. The amount of focus it took to wield it was much harder than it had been when she was pregnant.Alex pressed her ear to the door. Two heartbeats from the other side. She had no weapons other than the fire. She may be able to take out one Alpha, but not two. She sighed, then moved to another wall. There was no sound coming from that side. She tapped on it. S
