Brooke closed the distance between them. Her face was just centimeters away now. She reached up and held his chin with her thumb and index finger. "Next time, stay." She stepped out of the tub and left the room, leaving him standing there in wet boxers and a towel.

He stood dumbfounded. She wanted it. He shook his head to clear the thoughts away and finished drying. He donned fresh clothing before stepping out of the bathroom. Both women sat at the table eating their oatmeal and chatting.

"I'm just saying that they could at least have packed another flavor," Brooke said.

"Well, there wasn't much to choose from. Just be happy you're not eating it for every meal. We were lucky enough to get several different lunch and dinner options. You'll just have to deal," Ellie said and scooped a bunch of oatmeal into her mouth.

"I don't know how I'll live on this stuff for six months," Brooke said.

"I'm just happy that we have a safe place to stay for the night with food. I'm glad you were ab

The next morning, Tom woke up first and snuck out of the bed before the women. Most men would be in heaven with this Link connection, but he just wasn't ready. There were too many feelings to get hurt in this situation and he wasn't going to be the instigator. He showered, dressed, and started making breakfast before both the girls rolled out of bed.Ellie stumbled sleepily to the bathroom and Brooke sat on the bed watching him."No games this morning?" She asked.Tom handed her a bowl of oatmeal. "We don't have time. Looks like this next trip is fifteen hours and there's a bridge.""That's a long time out on the Surface," she said."We're also nearing a big city," Tom said and tapped the map on the table."Is there any way we can avoid it? The last time we were in a city it didn't go so well for you.""You'd have to ask Ellie. She's in charge of the route planning," Tom said and continued eating his breakfast.Ellie stepped out of the bathroom fully dressed. She plopped down a

A loud motor vehicle startled Tom awake. Ellie jumped, too. They both sat up and peered into the darkness in the direction of the noise as it made its way from close by and zipped further away. Tom reached for his gun under his bag and gripped it tightly."It's going northeast," Ellie whispered.Tom looked around. "Where's Brooke? She should have come running after hearing something like that. Where is she?" Tom jumped to his feet. Panic surged through him. They had her. Whoever was on that thing had her."They have her," Ellie echoed his thoughts."How do you know?""It's a feeling. Like, if I close my eyes I can feel the vibration from the motorcycle.""A motorcycle? Is that what it was?"Ellie nodded. The moonlight cast dark shadows from her hair across her face.Tom handed her the automatic rifle. "Carry this. I'll get her bag. Let's get moving. They went northeast, right? If I have to chase them for a thousand kilometers, I will. We will find her."Ellie laid a hand on hi

They crossed the bridge and raced onwards. Tom managed to hit two more men, not just bikes this time before the van gave out. The tire burst with a sharp explosion and the whole van swerved. Tom braced with his hands and legs as Ellie turned into the corner to keep it from rolling. The motorcycles came at them with guns blazing.Ellie turned in her seat. "Duck!"Tom flattened himself to the floor and the automatic rifle showered the motorcycles with bullets. Screams and crashes came from outside. Ellie stopped firing and turned forward, then shot out her window. Tom sat up. One man was recovering from his fallen bike. He started running away. Tom shot him in the back with the sniper rifle.Things quieted down. Tom swung the rifle to his back and held the pistols at the ready again. He scooted out of the van and walked around the side. Fallen bikes and dead men littered the ground. He turned towards the front of the van on Brooke's side. A man held up his gun and pointed it at Tom. T

Ellie shook Tom awake. "It's getting close to the time you wanted to wake up." The orange shadows from the nearby flares lit up her face as she loomed over him.Tom grumbled. His back hurt from sleeping on the hard ground. Brooke lay curled up in front of him with her back to him and was using his arm as a pillow. He felt like he'd been asleep only a few minutes, but the darkness outside told him otherwise. With his free arm, he pulled Brooke against him."Time to get going," he whispered in her ear."I was already awake for a few hours. I took some pain medication." She turned to look back at him. "You just looked so lonely. I had to come to keep you company.""Well thanks, but I don't think you're going to like what I have in mind for you next." He pulled away from her and stood up. He grabbed one of the splints off the desk and held it up. "You're the doctor, but I am pretty sure we need to splint you up to make sure you heal correctly."Brooke, who now sat in the middle of the

Tom knelt down behind his own tower and looked through the scope of the hunting rifle. The sun and heat made it hard to aim, but he could count maybe fifteen or so motorcycles coming down the highway towards them. "Looks like our friends are back to finish us off."Tom took aim but waited. With any luck, they would drive by them.A few moments later, a spray of bullets showered their little area.Brooke pressed her back tightly to the solar tower as bits and pieces of the glass flew from impacts. "How'd they see us?""Shadows," Ellie said and hugged the tower tightly. "Look down. Our shadows make the towers look thicker."Tom found a clear shot to one man's chest and took it. He went down and his motorcycle turned into another one. "We're going to have to run.""We can't outrun them," Brooke huffed."We'll take our chances. Run towards the train. Go now!" Tom commanded and shot at another man but missed. Damn the heat and water vapor.Ellie and Brooke took off running next to t

"Ellie," Brooke whispered. "Ellie, I have to pee. Els?"Brooke was leaning over Tom's stomach and shaking Ellie who slept on the floor next to their bench. His head rested on one of Brooke's thighs and it looked like her head had been resting on his stomach while she was sleeping.Tom reached out and touched his hand to her arm. "I can take you."In the dim light, he could see her shaking her head furiously. "No, that's okay. I'll wake her."Ellie grumbled in her sleep and rolled over beneath the travel coat she was using as a blanket."Seriously, I'll take you. It's not a big deal." He pushed himself up into a sitting position and steadied Brooke on the bench.Brooke's mouth became a hard line. "I don't think I can.""Don't you have to go?""Yeah, but, you'll be right there- listening," she whispered.Tom chuckled. "No, I won't. I'll plug my ears.""Ellie, please wake up. Come on, please?"Tom pushed into a standing position, careful to step over Ellie. His calf was tight a

Quiet voices startled Tom from his dozing. He hadn't quite been asleep but he hadn't been awake either. Brooke stirred at his side. He turned to see some of the others gathered together eating breakfast. The sun was just starting to light up the horizon and the air still felt a little brisk despite the humidity. He sat up and helped Brooke to a sitting position. "Ready for some breakfast?" He asked. She nodded and he retrieved the supplies from his pack. They sat cross-legged leaning against the bottom of the bench with Ellie still sleeping in front of them. He fed Brooke a spoonful of what must have been scrambled eggs.Tom looked out over the groups of people gathering for breakfast. There were ten in all. Three of them were women. The guard had changed since last night. A brunette woman sat with a rifle in her lap and the scope at her eye as she surveyed the horizon. The man on guard from last night was lying flat out on the ground near the train still sleeping. One man, he seeme

Once they hit the ground, they followed her to the tracks. The solar panels layout to either side hooked up to a large metal box. Large cables ran from the train to the sides. Long poles lay to either side of the single rail."Elroy, get over here. Get started. We're burning daylight.""Yes, ma'am. Alright, folks. Edrick, Sabin, you're on the left. Vigo, Khyber you're on the right. Vanna, you man the machine. Let's go."The people scrambled to their spots.Vigo and Khyber poked poles through the holes in one piece of track, which looked like a meter wide chunk of I-beam from a building. Edrick and Sabin caught the poles from the other side. They manipulated and turned the heavy track until it straightened. Elroy applied metal plates hooked to the equipment on to the top edge of the closest and furthest track pieces."Now," Elroy said.Vanna flipped a switch then watched the dials build while she read the display. "Clear!" She hit a button and a metal clang rang out as the two pie

Jack woke with a splitting headache. The white tile ceiling above him looked like that of a hospital room. He gave an inward sigh. The last time had been three months. He wondered how long it had been this time. His fingers felt tight and his hand cramped. He looked over to see they were taped together with someone else's hand. He blinked the sleep from his eyes. As his vision cleared, he saw Alex lying on the cot next to him. Their tactical suits had been removed but the tech suit remained. Both of them were layered in blankets strapped to wires. He racked his brain and remembered the nova they had set off. The third one in a row must have taken its toll.He sent heat into Alex's hand. Her eyes blinked opened. She pulled at her taped hand and then used her free hand to rub her eyes. She looked around. "What's going on?""Wish I knew," Jack answered. She quirked a smile, then pushed the covers back. "It's kind of hot in here, isn't it?""Is it? I can't really tell." Jack sat up, l

The rumbling throughout the Sanctuary stilled as the battle above drew silent. Tom turned to Jimmy. Jimmy nodded and the team climbed to the Surface. After the light, the tunnel, and the door, they emptied out onto the street. Their men looked tired but had smiles on their faces. The team leaders directed them on searches to find any survivors, whether they were friend or foe."Has anyone seen Alex?" Jimmy shouted.Several people shook their heads.Jimmy turned to his team. "Let's spread out. Knowing them, they'll be up somewhere high."The team diverged. Tom searched on his own, always keeping at least his pistol at the ready. The sun slipped over the horizon casting the buildings in a deep twilight glow. Tom climbed the stairs on several buildings to the top but didn't find anything except dead bodies and empty bullet casings. After five buildings, the night settled in. The tanks disappeared back down into the tunnel. Jimmy recruited more people to help search. Armor-clad bodies

Someone was calling his name. At least he thought. There it was again. Tom blinked. The room was black and hazy."Tom?" Jimmy's face loomed above him."What happened?""A fireman got to you. Are you alright?"Tom wiggled his fingers. He could feel the skin pulling across his arm as he moved. "I'll be okay, just a few blisters." He pushed back to his feet, climbing up over the top of the dead Alphas.Their power suit clad soldiers surrounded the room with guns drawn. Bullets covered the floor along with bodies of the Alphas and a few of his team members. His stomach twisted at the loss of good men.Jimmy put a hand on the shoulder of his power armor. "They died saving us. We need to get moving. We've gotten ten so far. We'll finish a sweep and then start clearing the level below."Tom nodded. "Let's go."Jimmy led the way. His team fell in behind him as they jogged down the streets checking building to building. The battle had tightened in around the Sanctuary. The noise of it s

The three of them sat dressed in black tactical gear layered over Alpha tech suits. Alex's dirty face watched Jack as he tightened down the straps on her suit."We stick together, okay. He looked at Lexi while he said it."I thought you were going to make me stay in the pod," Lexi said."I would but it won't be safe there.""I don't think it will be any safer with us," Alex said in a low tone.Jack turned to Alex. "At least we will be able to keep an eye on her. She tends to always find trouble when I tell her to stay put."Alex's eyes flashed to Lexi. "Don't I know it."Lexi rolled her eyes. "If it weren't for me, you guys wouldn't be together, or maybe you'd even be dead.""Watch your tone young lady," Alex warned.Lexi grinned. "I know you're trying to be all tough, but it's really good to hear you say that." She stepped forward and gave Alex a hug.Alex melted. She laid her head against Lexi's cheek. "You're so ta

Jack reached over and touched Alex's shoulder. "Wake up, love."Alex squeezed her eyes shut and rubbed at them with the back of her hands smearing the soot across her face. "How long has it been?" She looked over at Lexi sleeping in a reclined chair. He reached his hand out and wiped at a smudge with his thumb. It only made it worse but she smiled at the touch. "About six hours," he said."You shouldn't have let me sleep so long. You need rest, too.""I got a few hours. Don't worry so much."Alex looked out the pod screen. "I can't help it. I'm finally free of Henry's terror, but now I feel like we're on the verge of losing it all."Jack's mouth drew down in a frown. "It's not going to be pretty. Ellie messaged me before we left her range. Looks like the Alphas are ahead of us by a few hours. When we get there, we will have to fight through them to get to the base."Alex nodded. "Did you see much of it when you visited? It's huge.""No, I only really had one thing on my mind at

Tom sat at the table drumming his fingers. "Does anyone actually know how to work these computers other than Ellie?"The five people working the screen didn't look up.Jimmy crossed his arms over his chest. "Just give them time.""General, the ships are in place.""Good," Janice said, leaning over the tech's workstation. "Anyone have a status on the Alphas?""They're closing in. The ships are taking them out now.""It looks like they are floating topside. Orders?""There's nothing the ships can do up there. Tell them to concentrate on as many darts as they can. Send runners topside and tell them to prepare." Janice turned to Jimmy and Tom. "That's your cue. Do your best."Tom saluted and Jimmy nodded. They turned out into the hall. Their teams waited for them, strapped with weapons and power armor. Tom donned the power armor helmet, gave a nod to Jimmy, and led his team away.As they walked down the halls, they passed locked doors to apartments. Their people, the ones that wer

Alex stood locked in a small empty room the size of a utility closet. The walls lay bare except for the light switch. She flicked at the walls, but the screens were disabled and didn't respond. She paced back and forth, rubbing the Vice at her neck. Her bare feet didn't make a sound as they worked the white tile of the floor. She had to figure a way out of here. She needed to find Brooke and Tom. They had to be free. They were only here because of her. This was her problem, her world, not theirs. She flicked her palm open and drew a fireball. Her insides were still hot, but the pull of energy from just one fireball was tremendous. The amount of focus it took to wield it was much harder than it had been when she was pregnant.Alex pressed her ear to the door. Two heartbeats from the other side. She had no weapons other than the fire. She may be able to take out one Alpha, but not two. She sighed, then moved to another wall. There was no sound coming from that side. She tapped on it. S
