~MILLIE~
My fingers tapped forcefully onto the leather steering wheel of Megan’s car, as the music flooded through the speakers taking hold of me. Rock was my genre of choice today. I couldn’t help but sing at the top of my voice as the car practically vibrated with each deafening beat of the base. I didn’t care if pedestrians could hear my playlist, as I was in my happy place once again.
The drive from the animal shelter, through our small town and into the city was long and, the quiet tranquil location surrounded by huge towering trees were now replaced by large deafening crowds and huge towering buildings.
I’d never been to the city on my own before. Megan and I would normally go together, but as she was away, I felt adventurous and brave going solo. I was so glad I had remembered the way and how to find the car park she told me to use.
I didn’t think much of the way of living here. Too many cars, too many people and far too many traffic lights. Every aspect of it was busy. From the people to their lifestyles. Shops were on top of shops which were next to shops, and each turn in the road was placed on a limited restriction, either for the busybodies of the metropolitan life to cross the road or for the red and amber lights to change to green for the fuel-guzzling motors.
No, the city was not for me. I preferred the little town I was living in, surrounded by mother nature in her most beautiful form. Less cars, fewer people and more vibrancy and delight.
I turned the music down as I indicated left making my way into the car park.
Yes! A space!
I didn’t think I would find one as it’s Friday afternoon, but luck must have been on my side. As I pulled into the space, my phone started ringing.
“Hello,” I answered with a smile.
“Hey beautiful, how are you?” Megan’s happy voice filled my ears.
“Megan! I’ve missed you! How was work? Please tell me you are on your way home?” She had been working away for the week and I was so excited to hear from her that I had a sudden case of verbal diarrhoea.
“Haha, slow down!” She said sensing the enthusiasm in my tone.
“Yes, I’m on my way home. Work was tough and exhausting, so get the wine ready, I fancy a night out! I have asked April too.” She laughed.
“Umm, ok.” Oh god, I hadn’t fully recovered since the last time we drank! Getting older certainly meant longer hangovers.
My stomach flipped, making me feel queasy at the thought of going ‘out-out’. Getting dressed up, crowds of drunken people and alcohol were enough to make me feel anxious.
“Ummm… I have just got to the city; I need to get a few bits. Is there anything you want?” Mentally preparing myself to make a note of what she says.
“No no, it’s ok, just some alcohol to get ready with.” She sounded like she really needed this. Great… No getting out of it now.
“Ok, I will grab some. See you later.”
“Love you! Byyyyyyeee.”
I hung up the phone and grabbed my bag and walked through the carpark exit which took me out onto the high street.
A night out… A bloody night out… I don’t have any clothes for a night out… Or makeup… And alcohol… Damn you alcohol! Why did I have to be such a lightweight?
What the hell am I going to wear?
A deflated huff escaped me as I realized how pathetic I must have been when I was with Dan. A grown arse recluse of a woman, wearing the same clothes day in, day out, with no life outside of work and, someone who only really talked to Megan and the animals. Ha, Dr Doolittle… Or just crazy… What an earth am I going to wear…
Crossing the road, I stopped in my tracks abruptly when I saw my reflection in a glass window.
What the hell has happened to me?
I look 20 years older. My heart sank deep with sorrow.
I don’t want another man in my life, not for a long time anyway. Hey, I may even become celibate. It would be a lot easier, but maaaaan, I look a mess. I don’t look like me.
The clothes I owned drenched my figure underneath a coat that belonged to Megan. My brown hair looked dull and lifeless and my skin looked pale and washed out. I wore makeup but it didn’t suit me or my skin tone. It made me look transparent, almost deathly.
My eyes started to swell as realization finally set in. Over the past few months, I had been making do with what I had. What I had when I was with him. Did I really let myself go this drastically? Wow…
I continued to stare expressionlessly into the huge glass window which belonged to the biggest building in the city, not noticing that the lobby was full of people heading towards the door. I was stuck in slow-motion bewilderment.
Soon the plume of bodies ploughed out of the building that trapped my self-image. I felt myself being moved along by the crowd when unexpectedly, someone barged into me.
“Ouch!” I shrieked rubbing my shoulder and looking back to see who the culprit was.
That really hurt.
I caught a glimpse of two tall handsome men who looked like they were in a rush. It must have been one of them. They quickly disappeared amongst the many people that seem to have appeared out of nowhere.
I rolled my eyes and carried on moving forward with the masses, fixated with my appearance at the forefront of my mind.
He cannot control me now. I’m not living that life anymore! I need to do this today or my sub-conscious would take the opportunity to talk myself out of it.
New clothes, new makeup and fresh hair was what I needed. I lifted my sleeve to check the time. 03:45pm. I have time, right?
My feet pounded the floor like a woman on a mission until the familiar smell of hairspray and perm solution filled my nostrils. A hairdresser!
Fingers crossed they can get me in at such short notice!
The thick sliding doors sprung open allowing me to step inside before they crashed together behind me.
“Hi, welcome to Cutting Edge. How can I help”. A pretty face greeted me.

The elevator reached the ground floor and its heavy doors slide open with a computerized announcement. Stepping out, I was surprised to see it so busy. The lobby was full. Both humans and wolves intermingling. Most were making their way out through the revolving doors, others were sat engrossed in conversation, and a handful were walking towards the elevator. ‘Does everyone clock off from work at this time or something?’ I pondered, but then again, I suppose I’m so used to staying late most nights, I never really saw employees finishing work. I was normally one of the last to leave, even on a Friday. It looked particularly busy outside too.
The busy lives of those around me momentarily retracted me from what had just happened. I glanced down and was thankful to see that my cock had finally reduced in size, meaning I no longer needed to cover my groin with my suit jacket. Pushing my arms through its sleeves, I adjusted the collar and fastened the button. Ahh, smart and dapper once more.
I looked over towards the large reception area and saw Sara typing away on her computer.
“Sara, can you block out my diary for the remainder of today please, I have to go out.” I shot her a flirtatious grin which made her cheeks flush with colour. She nodded and flashed a coy smile in return.
“What the fuck was that about, Aiden?” Kieran asked as we made our way to the entrance of our building.
“I don’t know. Her scent was that of an unmated female though.”
Kieran stopped abruptly and reached for my arm.
“How the hell is that even possible?!”
“I have no idea, but I intend to find out!”
Bobby looked at us. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him look so overwhelmed before. It was like her scent was torturing him and his wolf, eating him from the inside out. “B-but she was mated… Wasn’t she? Before you.” He said. Shit, we needed to get him out as soon as possible.
“Yes, she was. Her mate died but he did mark her so her scent should have changed.” I looked at Kieran. My eyes were filled with apprehension.
“This doesn’t make sense.” Kieran returned my expression as a rush of cool air whizzed past us as we walked through the glass doors.
“SHIT! I’ve left my laptop! Wait out here for me, I’ll ask Sara to grab it and pass it to Tally for me. I don’t want Tia’s dirty hands all over it!” I turned and pushed my way through the revolving doors, heading back inside the Lobby. For fuck sake! I needed to be quick in case the devil’s bitch reappeared! Tally was one of my guards who, when in the city, was a model ‘employee’. The human’s believed he was a family member, so we played along with it.
“Watch it!” I heard Kieran shout as the outside world fell behind the entrance.
“Sara, my laptop is still in my office, can you ask Tally to take it to my home office please?”
“Certainly, Sir.”
“Thank you!”
I pushed back through the doors to see Kieran and Bobby patiently waiting for me.
“W-what were you shouting at…” My words floated slowly out of my mouth. My wolf’s ears prick up as he smelt something in the air. What is that?
“Oh, it was nothing, just someone bumped into me.” He patted my back in reassurance.
I lifted my head higher and inhaled. The smell was beautiful. Delicate yet exhilarating. A mixture of vanilla and the earthy and nutty undertones of coconut. It evoked a flurry full of emotions. Ones that I had never felt before. My core ignited as a surge of electricity coursed through my entire body. Every particle inside me was on fire.
My eyes continue to scan the bodies that surrounded us to see if I could locate the owner of this delicious fragrance.
MATE…
What?
MATE…
No, it can’t be.
MATE…
My wolf couldn’t say anything else.
Where is she?
Panic filled my senses as the hordes of people started to disperse.
~AIDEN~I stood by the side of the road, lost. Completely. Fucking. Lost. My wolf was pacing back and forth like a possessed wild animal, whilst I stood there dumbstruck. Her scent was fading fast and I didn’t know what the hell to do.“Aiden!” Kieran touched my arm sensing my exasperation.“I smelt her.” My wolf’s eyes were now my own as we both filtered through what was left of the large crowd with our tunnel v

~AIDEN~I pulled up outside The Wild Lounge and turned the ignition off on my Mercedes G-Class. Jake eagerly hopped out of the car before any of us had the chance to undo our seatbelts. He loved the attention and didn’t waste any time flirting with the ladies who stood lined up outside waiting for their turn to enter.Jesus Christ Jake!” Samuel shouted after his brother who hadn’t bothered to close the door behind him.Kieran chuc
~MILLIE~“Come on! We need a drink!” April and Megan grabbed my arms and pulled me inside. I coyly smiled at the doormen as our heels clicked past them. I was secretively thankful we were late. We didn’t need to hang around outside in any queues, getting cold and frustrated.“Wooooow!” I gasped. The inside of this place was insane.Megan had told me when we were in the taxi, that this place was a cocktail bar in the da
~MILLIE~Megan and April looked at me intensely, waiting for my next move. One that I didn’t even know. My eyes went from left, to right, pausing ever so slightly as I made eye contact with the 4 people that were around me. We sat in silence for what seemed like hours. Realistically, it was probably only a few minutes.I decided to break the awkwardness. “Werewolves… Like Twilight?” I said dryly, with a hint of sarcasm thrown in as I cocked my head to the side.
~TIA~I watched, silently and patiently. My long red fingernails drummed onto the dashboard of my car as I stalked the club’s entrance from my hiding spot. I’d seen Aiden leave the city early with his babysitters in tow, I watched him arrive at the club and I watched him leave. He was completely unaware that I was here… Watching his every single move…Foolish man... I thought he was more attentive to his senses. My mobile vibrated on the passenger seat. “Hello?” I answered the unknown number.
~MILLIE~He didn’t blink. Not even a teeny tiny wink. He just stared directly at me. He would most certainly smash a starting contest! I scoffed but regained composure as this situation was more than a little odd and I didn’t know how my internal joke would be received by everyone here. God, this felt awkward. Here I was, backed up against a cold wall, freezing my arse off, with two of my friends who were apparently witches, who may I add were not wearing a pointy hat or carrying a broom tucked under their arm, and let’s not forget being surrounded by werewolves who looked like humans… Not an ounce of doggy-ness, if that’s even a word… No excessive hair, no pointy ears, and no tail… I sniggered aga
~MILLIE~“What the actual fuck is going on here?” Everyone around me looked on edge, but I was the only one who seemed to be confused. It was like they all knew what was going on and yet here I was, late to the party. Megan and April stared at each other, exchanging silent words as though they were having an unspoken conversation.“And where is he running off too? Who is Tia? Why can he smell her? My questions directed to the others went unanswered. Each one of them swapped frowns which pissed me off even more. After the shit these people had put me through, the least they coul

~MILLIE~ Some things in life are guaranteed, like the beautiful sound of the bird’s song as the sun begins to rise or like how the sun sets in the evening, bringing with it a breeze of chilled air that is sure to flush your skin with a gentle tingle, awakening the hairs on your arms. But at my ripe old age, you come to realise that there are still so many things in life, that are not guaranteed. Like falling in love for a start. People often say that love will walk right up to you and smack you square in the face when you least expect it, you know when you’re minding your own business or trying to move on with your life in a certain direction. Who that lover will be, God only knows but what I do know, is that you have no control over it, no matter how hard you try to gip it by the horns and show it who’s boss? You simply end up succumbing to its overbearing power, allowing it to flood your senses and inevitably, turning you into a mushy version of your former self. &
~TIA~“Pick up your phone, dammit! Why isn’t he picking up his phone?” I screeched, hurling my phone across the room. Dan hadn’t answered once again, in fact, he hadn’t accepted any of my phone calls since I arrived at the Dark witch’s house, who, for all the bitter and twisted DNA that made her, she had a relatively normal name. Miranda. No one answered me. Miranda continued to sway in her old and tatty rocking chair next to the fireplace and Elder Richard remained quiet as he sat at the head of the dining table.I raised one simple eyebrow in response to their ignorance. Do they not realise how important this all is? Dan could have killed Aiden for all we knew, and the unknown was now beginning to eat away at me.Miranda scowled and then moved her head with a patronising tilt.“Don’t Miranda, just don&rsq
~MILLIE~“Drop the fucking gun.” Dan hissed, the rounded metal pushing harder against my skull, I exhaled a breath I didn’t know I was holding, and a single salty tear escaped out of the corner of my eye and rolled down my chilled cheek, finding its way into the crease of my lip. My eyes fluttered unconsciously, clinging onto the vison of Aiden who was still being attacked and although he was holding his own, more men appeared to be jumping on his wolf as quickly as he was tossing them to the ground. With the safety still off and one bullet remaining in the chamber, I felt my way along the cold steel guard that protected the trigger, before placing my finger onto the piece of metal that would allow me to take out another hunter.I won’t let them kill Aiden, they won’t take him away from me.I felt possessed, my mind had been overtaken by an unstoppable fo
~MILLIE~The sight before me was nothing short of barbaric. I hadn't really looked properly when Dan attempted to encourage my view but now, with the shape side of a silver blade to my throat, I had no choice. It was as though I was watching a high-definition thriller movie on a big screen. Blood was literally spraying into the moonlit sky, limbs were being torn from the human hunters as though they were merely a rag doll held together by some flimsy stitching, and even though it appeared that the supernatural werewolves were the winning team, they weren't without injury. As much as I wanted to screw my eyes tight, blocking out the blood-filled rage, I couldn’t. I needed to see Aiden. I needed to know he was ok, and it wasn't long before my clouded vision spotted his overly large wolf.He howled, stilling the other wolves from their fight before all heads turned to face us.Come
~MILLIE~My eyes scanned over the lifeless body slumped on the floor, and even though her head was twisted in the wrong direction, there was a part of me that wanted confirmation that she was gone. “Shit,” I breathed, “I-is she dead?” I asked, my orbs still affixed. He hummed, validating my suspicions. I sighed, slightly relieved that I didn’t need to use the rifle that rested in my hands. My gaze lifted, passing the corpse to her executioner’s bare feet and shins.“Well, as far as introductions go, this is a first.” He said, a hint of humour in his tone.“Huh,” I mumbled, not really hearing what he said.“Errm, maybe this would be an easier encounter if you weren’t still pointing the gun in my direction? After all, I did just save your life,” He chuckled.“Oh, yeah, shit
~AIDEN~“For fucks sake,” I growled, looking down at my unresponsive phone. It must have turned off by accident when I nearly killed Jarrad. I found my gaze subconsciously lifting to see the side of his face and my blood instantly ran hot with anger. His heart rate increased, he knew I was boring a hole into his head and he sensed my rising fury, but he continued to focus on the blackened road around us. ‘Stop it Aiden,’ I thought to myself with a grunt as I forcefully pushed the power button on my phone, waiting for it to spring to life.“N-nearly there.” Jar
~MILLIE~The door scuffed against the floor as it closed, and just like that, she was gone. No, she can’t have just gone. “Come back! Come back you bitch!” I yelled against my restricted body, but the door remained shut. Where was she going? Who did she need to see? Panic began to race through my body as question upon question entered my mind. Everyone I cared for was now in danger and I needed to do something… Anything. Feeling empowered to save my loved ones, I pushed myself up. I felt strong. I felt galvanised.I felt Dan slam my body back down against the tabletop.
~MILLIE~His fist connected with the delicate skin on my cheek, stinging it in an instant. I shrieked and curled up into a tight foetal position, hiding my face from further impact. My eyes flushed with water, not from tears packed with misery, but from the throbbing pain radiating across the left side of my face. Yes, it hurt like a bitch, but what alarmed me the most was the surprise of his punch. He hardly ever hit me in the face.It would attract too much attention to you’,was his excuse, almost like he was doing me a favour. Instead, he would purple my torso and limbs in various shapes and sizes.
