Bella waited for a few moments and then stood up. After leaving the funeral parlor, she went home. Her mother, Susan, had asked her to prepare the things they would bring tomorrow when they returned to San Ricardo, where they were scheduled to bury Ara. Bella was also told to look for items they could bring for her sister.
She started searching through her sister's belongings. She opened a tall cabinet in her sister's room. Bella smiled. Ara's things were neatly arranged. Since the beginning, Ara had always been meticulous and careful with her belongings, so Bella wasn't surprised.
Aside from clothes and a few personal items like bags and others, Bella couldn't find anything that she knew she could bring along when they accompanied Ara to her final resting place the next day.
For some reason, Bella decided to search through another cabinet that was there. She still found nothing, until she finally decided to look under her sister's bed.
There, Bella smiled upon discovering a box. She took it and opened it. It was a bit dusty, but that was okay.
Inside, Bella found some old items such as a box of chocolates, a hat, a photo album, and more. But what truly caught her attention was a medium-sized box designed like a treasure chest.
Curiosity got the better of her as she took it out and opened it. Inside were yellowed papers and a green notebook. Bella picked up one of the many papers and realized it was a love letter. As she read the letter, her eyes paused when she saw a name written at the bottom: Daniel.
She didn't know who Daniel was. Whoever he was, he had become a puzzle to her. Bella swallowed hard as she tried to ignore the sudden chill that ran through her. She couldn't understand why she felt that way, even though she knew deep down that Ara had a boyfriend in Malaysia, none other than Timothy Godinez.
Just thinking about Timothy's name quickly mixed anxiety with the emotions in her chest during those moments. It reminded her of the favor Ara had asked of her regarding her boyfriend, just a few days before Ara passed away.
After reading the letter, Bella returned it with a smile, along with others that had a similar design of the stationery used. At the bottom of the paper was a red rose and next to it, a guitar.
Bella had only read one of the letters so far, but she couldn't help but feel amused. Daniel was so sweet. Even though she was older than the possible age when he wrote that letter, she still felt a tinge of excitement.
Next, Bella picked up the green notebook. She had a feeling she knew what it was, and she was right. It was a diary. Ara's diary.
Though it was wrong for her to read it, her curiosity overwhelmed her, and she began to flip through the pages. Bella was greeted by her twin sister's beautiful penmanship, and once again, she couldn't help but smile. The first page was blank, so she turned to the next.
On the following page were the words, "PERSONAL PROPERTY BY ARABELLA MADRIGAL." Bella felt a sudden rush of chills and coldness, s if Ara had wrapped her arms around her. She knew it was Ara, and just like earlier, her sister embraced her once again.
Bella held back her emotions. During those moments, she felt like she had finally understood the true meaning behind everything Ara had done since earlier. It seemed that Ara wanted her to read her diary. Or perhaps she was giving Bella permission to read whatever was written in that notebook. So, driven by intense curiosity, Bella began to read her twin sister's diary.
"DEAR DIARY..."
These two words became the gateway that seemed to transport Bella into every page of that notebook. As she read each word and admired Ara's beautiful penmanship, she felt as if she could visualize every scene written there. It came to life, and that motivated her to continue what she had started.
______________
NINE YEARS AGO...
"CONGRATULATIONS!" Ara happily greeted her twin sister Bella, embracing her tightly and planting a kiss on her cheek. "Thank you, Bella. Congratulations to you too! Isn't your graduation in a week?" she asked, wrapping her arm around Bella's.
Bella nodded. "By the way, what course are you planning to take in college?" she asked Ara.
"I want to take Hotel and Restaurant Management. I've already mentioned it to Mom and Dad, and they agreed. How about you? Will you continue with Education?" they exchanged questions.
"Yes, I want to become a teacher," Bella replied as they walked towards the parking lot of the public high school, where their old sedan was parked.
"Where will you study? How about we enroll in the same university? There are many options here in Manila, and I'm sure we'll both get accepted. It would be so much fun to always be together," Ara said, with a hint of playfulness in her voice, hoping her sister would agree.
Bella's smile faltered slightly. "Sorry, Ara. I've already made my decision. I can't leave our grandparents. It would be unfair to them if I go, leaving them alone in the province."
Ara immediately felt a pang of sadness upon hearing her sister's response. Bella had a valid point, and she understood what she meant. She didn't push further for what she wanted.
"What about you? Aren't you going back to San Ricardo for a vacation while there's no school?" Bella asked Ara.
Ara shook her head. "I don't think so. I applied to be a student assistant at the school I'll be attending. I'll find out the result in a week. If I get accepted, Mom and Dad will only need to provide half of the tuition fee," she explained as they got into the car, with their mother Susan in the front seat, and their stepfather Anselmo as the driver.
Their youngest sibling, Anthony, was left at home with their grandparents, who had traveled to Manila to attend Bella's graduation.
"Really? What job did you apply for?" Bella inquired.
"Student Assistant at the library. It's an easy job, so it won't affect my studies," Ara explained with a smile directed at her sister.
Bella simply nodded and remained silent.
In Ara's mind, she couldn't wait to start her college journey, to graduate, and to provide a better life for her family in the future.
As expected, a week after Ara’s high school graduation, the results for her application as a student assistant at the university she would be attending were released. Much to her delight, she found out that she was among the students who passed.“Mama! Papa!” Ara called out joyfully as she stood by the doorway of their house. She knew her parents would be thrilled, and she wasn’t wrong. Her mother embraced her tightly, and her father, Anselmo, did the same.“Our children are truly intelligent, Susan. In that case, we need to celebrate. Choose, should we eat out for lunch or cook a special dish here at home?” her father said, his eyes shining with immense happiness.Ara shrugged her shoulders playfully and spoke with a smile. “Let’s just eat at home, Dad. We’ll save more money that way, and my younger brother Anthony will also be able to enjoy a hearty meal.” Ara was referring to her elementary school brother, who was present. She noticed her parents exchange meaningful glances at each
That was the first day of classes for the first semester of that school year. And because he was a transferee, Daniel automatically became an irregular student at the university he transferred to in Manila. “Drive safely, good luck on your first day!” Daniel’s sister, Danica, cheerfully added as she kissed him on the cheek while he was still enjoying his breakfast. “Alright, sis. Take care of yourself as you sort out your papers. Maybe it’s better if you bring Manang Salyn with you; she knows her way around Manila better,” he reminded his sister. “Okay,” Danica replied shortly, smiling. After that, she left. Daniel didn’t have a difficult time traveling even though it was the first day of school. Maybe it was because he left home early, that’s why. As expected, his sister Danica’s flight to New York would proceed. And just as expected, he would be left alone in that big house. The young man sighed deeply. He needed to get used to the fact that in a few months, he would only have
MY FEET felt heavy as I crossed the rocky road in that area. I’m not familiar and I don’t know where that is. But my feet hurt and I just endured the feeling of small, sharp rocks piercing on them. Despite the fact that the said place is stranger to me I still can’t help to admire it. The scenery was beautiful and the fresh air was fragrant, mixed with the smell of dew-soaked grass and the petals of wildflowers. That place was so beautiful and even though I had no idea where I really was, that thought didn't seem to matter to me anymore. I didn’t even care about the rocky road I was treading, because what was more important to me in those moments, was the wonderful feeling that was given to me as if that place seemed like paradise. After all, I grew up on a large, beautiful hacienda. Yes, I am an heiress, and one day my brother and I were the two heirs to that hacienda. And because of that kind of place where I grew up, I thought, I shouldn't have felt so much amazement here. B
Present Day... Bella quickly wiped away the tears that had soaked her face. She did not know Daniel, but everything she read was enough to justify everything that had happened. She turned to the next page again. And by that time it was no longer the usual Dear Diary she had read written on the left and top part of the paper, but the words Dearest Daniel. Yes, this is where her sister started writing to her late husband and that is what broke her heart. ***** Dearest Daniel, I’m here in our room, and as I write this I’m hugging your framed photo. You're really handsome, you know? And for me, you are the most handsome man in the world. That's true. I miss you so much. The next morning after the night that we talked, as you want it to happen I forced myself to be brave. And I promise you that I will continue to be that way, for you.
"WHAT are you saying?" my weeping utterance."The truth," he laughed softly then stared at me. "Look at me," a moment later I averted my gaze from my husband that's what I heard him say.Even though I didn't want to, I willingly obeyed him. Daniel has always been like that. He had his own way of persuading me and he did not have to raise his voice or be authoritative in the tone of his speech to do so."When I'm gone, fall in love again, go on with your life," I quickly felt an intense coldness all over my body because of what Daniel said.I shook my head consecutively. "No, you know I can't do that. You know how much I love you and when I do that you also know that even if there is someone else next to me you will still be the one I will look for, you will still be the one I will find," I cried insistently.I can't believe I heard those words from him personally but on the other han
Dear Diary,When Daniel's treatment started, I filled my heart with hope that my husband would recover. I love him so much and I still want to be with him. It was hard for me to let him go because I had already built my life with him, and that started the day when I answered him and accepted him into my life as my boyfriend. And that didn’t just double the day I agreed to marry him.I try to think that he will recover because I love him so much.I like to think that he will still be with me until I grow old. But doctors say otherwise. Daniel says otherwise.Maybe that’s really the case when you love someone. You will try to hold on even if you can't find anything to hold on to. Because you don't want to let him go.Days, weeks, and months passed. My husband's appearance has changed a lot. In the room where we were still sleeping, he wanted us to sleep next to each other,
"ISN'T it bad for you that we're doing this?" when they were both lying on the bed that was what Ara asked her husband.Ara heard the faint laugh that ran down on Daniel's throat. "I don't think so," he replied and then pulled her at touched her forehead with a simple kiss."In that case, let's take advantage of the situation," she said as she moved and went on top of her husband."Ara!" Daniel rebukes her.Thrilled that she just laughed softly and then started undressing again the now thin negligee that she was wearing."You don't have to get up, don't worry because I'm in charge this time," she said, throwing her negligee and then followed by her underwear made of thin lace.Their room was dark at that moment because they had turned off the light earlier after taking a bath. And only the light coming from the lamppost on the road serves as their torch. Its light pen
JUST as Daniel wanted to happen, she met his gaze. That's why she could clearly see how the emotion in his dark eyes changed as he claimed her. They were both soaked in the cold water flowing from the shower. But that did not decrease the heat that she was feeling as soon as her husband's furious maleness started to go in and out of her femininity."Y-You might get tired, ohhhhh!" she said then closed her eyes again when she felt a deep thrust coming from Daniel."I'm okay, don't worry about me," her husband replied as the corner of his lips rose before he lowered his head and claimed her lips. "I love you," he whispered huskily when he released her mouth. After that, he lifted her and sat her at the long bathroom counter. Her husband's actions intensified the heat that she felt. She felt very hot because with each attack she could feel the anger of his manhood hitti
MARIELLE had already asked them what they planned for their first night as a couple. At first, Daniel joked that he wanted a trip to Europe, but because of his condition, they both knew that it was impossible to happen.Ara suggested that they stay at the mansion. Now she is happily married to the man she loves the most. For her, more important than anything money can buy and pay for is to start Daniel's treatment."Why didn't you agree when Mama suggested we check in at a five-star hotel?" as they had agreed before she moved into the mansion she would sleep in her husband's bedroom from that night on.They were on the veranda then and breathing some fresh air. They had just finished eating a delicious dinner that Salyn and her mother-in-law prepared. In addition to that, they also had a nice lunch earlier as their wedding reception at a five-star hotel and restaurant."I don't need that, I prefer i
THE day that Ara and Daniel had been waiting had arrived. It wasn’t the kind of marriage she dreamed of, she had to admit it to herself. But even so, even if it wasn't the kind of marriage she had dreamed of since she was a child, she didn't feel the slightest bit of sadness or regret. Because the truth is, she was very happy. She is so much in love with the man she will marry and that is the most important thing of all. It's the same reason why her heart is still full of happiness. For the last time, Ara stared at herself in front of the large mirror in her room.Last night, instead of Daniel it was Danica who bought that dress with her. It was not easy for the three of them to convince the young man to just stay at home and let her leave with his sister. She was grateful when eventually she was able to convince him when she said she would be okay. Ara understa
IN the following days both of them became busy fixing everything for their wedding. Daniel's mother has been the one helping them. The wedding will be held at Judge Arcega's office. The judge is a friend of Daniel's parents who will be the one to marry them."Where are we going?" Ara asked one day before their wedding. It was a Saturday, no classes, while their wedding would be held the next day."Let's buy a dress for you to wear for tomorrow. I want you to be very beautiful," the young man stared at her then stroked her cheek."Can you still drive?" she asked the young man in a worried tone."Of course, I'm taking advantage of the opportunity while I can because I know I won't be able to do all this soon, especially when my treatment starts," her boyfriend told her as they left the garage. But that was the intensity of the shock that Ara felt w
