Chapter 7
"Erm…. I… I just wanted to say thank you, for giving me this opportunity to work with you," Jasmine told him as she entered his office.
He had a feeling she wanted to say more than that but was temporarily stunned by the way he spoke to her. She looked a little bit flustered, maybe she wasn't so confident after all.
It amazed him that he could do that to her, make her feel this way, it showed that she was human after all, unlike him. She looked beautiful even as she just awkwardly stood there. She looked drop-dead gorgeous like she would be the death of him someday.
"You don't need to thank me, this is not charity," he replied.
He was trying his best to keep his distance, at least until his life was calmer, which might never be. However, right now was not the best period to spark a steamy office romance. He had his head filled with war and possible attack strategies and here his mate was, turning his world upside down.
"I know, but I just thought it was proper courtesy to do that, I guess I was wrong," she retorted.
She looked at him squarely before turning back as she headed towards the door.
"Wait!" He exclaimed.
That stopped her in her tracks. Jason felt bad that he was treating her this way. As much as he tried to deny it, he couldn't ignore this strong urge to be with her.
And what better way to protect her than having her by his side always, he rationalized.
If only he saw the smirk on Jasmine's face before she turned back toward him, maybe he would not feel so guilty after all. Jasmine planned to push till he breaks. She knew it wouldn't be easy to get close to someone like Jason Halem, she knew there would be walls she would have to tear down if needed, and she was ready to use every trick she knew.
She didn't move from where she stood. He told her to wait and she obediently did just that. It was up to him to take the next step, to choose what follows after this. Whatever he said next would determine the trajectory of their relationship. He knew that she knew that, all that was left was for him to take action.
"I'm sorry, I did not mean to be so rude," he said with such softness that she knew things would work out as planned.
She stared at him. He looked tired, he was tired. The war had not even fully begun and he was already wary of the battle. He wished things were different. He wished times were different. He wished all he had to worry about was claiming his mate, making her his, but life has never been so easy on him.
However, he concluded that it was better that he accepted his feelings. He wanted to get close to her, even if it was just to protect her. Truth be told, by now he was fetching for any excuse to make this irrational decision of his worthy of pursuit.
"It's okay," she said, "but I do hope all is well Sir," she said, looking concerned.
"I told you, call me Jason," he corrected her.
"Oh sorry, my bad, hope you're okay Jason," she restated.
He wasn't okay. Jason Halem was far from any definition of okay. He felt like his head was on fire and he was on edge. He could be attacked anytime soon, from anywhere and that thought scared him. It also made him want to use whatever time he had more effectively. She wouldn't understand all these things, she was only human after all.
"I will be alright Jasmine," he said, with a little smile.
It was more of a reassurance to himself.
He will be alright, he has to be alright.
She knew that look. Something was wrong but she wouldn't pry. If he wanted to talk to her about what was going on in his life, he would.
For now, she was just okay that he was a little bit more relaxed with her, like the first day they met. There was a spark between them, she felt it and she planned to milk it dry. He had kinder eyes now, his muscle seemed a little bit less tense.
There was something strange about him though and she just noticed it now. His eye colour changed occasionally, it happened too often for it to just be normal.
When he walked past her like she was the plague a while ago his eyes were dead black like they lacked any soul. She was terrified but she still moved to start a conversation.
However, now they were golden, a soft brightening golden that gave him delicate features, it was a very big contrast from what she saw before. It intrigued her because she didn't know what to do with this information.
She could bet that the very first day they met his eyes were a golden brown that shone with amusement. He was a fascinating man indeed.
They were still staring at each other even though both parties were at a loss for words. She wanted him to say more, but he was done talking.
"Okay then, I'll get back to work…" she announced.
He simply nodded as a response. By now she had guessed that he was a man of few words, speaking only when necessary, so she was okay with the nod, at least he acknowledged her.
She took slow deliberate steps as she walked out of his office to her desk. She knew he was watching every step she took and she made sure she gave her best performance with those simple steps.
Jason was holding his breath all the while she was in his office. Of course, he could never tell her about his problems but she was making it hard for him to be a gentleman here and let her go for now.
He wasn't mistaken. She was very open about the fact that she liked his company at the very least. Her eyes spoke more than the words she uttered. On the contrary, though, she could just be a very jovial person with a knack for making people's lives a little bit more chaotic than usual.
Whatever it may be, he wasn't complaining. Sure he wasn't used to someone like her. To be honest he had never met anyone like her. She was bold and courageous and he could sense that she went for what she wanted no matter the obstacles.
People usually walked on eggshells around him. He wasn't the friendliest of persons but somehow he was always able to take control of every room he entered. He was a born leader. So somehow he was more revered than loved. There was hardly anyone bold enough to push their ideas on him.
Jasmine didn't look like someone to say yes to every single word he uttered and he liked that. She was going to be a beautiful challenge and he was up for it.
***
It was almost time for a lunch break and Jasmine was racking her brain for the most suitable way to ask Jason to join her for lunch.
She knew it was her first day at the office but she wanted to get things rolling as soon as possible. She wasn't planning on working here forever, so the sooner she got closer to him and wins his trust, the sooner she would get the information she wanted and get out of here.
She didn't want to come on too strong though, or seem desperate, but how could she make things as natural as possible with the boss being so tight-lipped and aloof.
Inviting him to lunch was the easiest way to start a conversation with him but she could envision him just shaking his head with a definite no slipping from his lips.
She was done with the work for the time being, even though it wasn't even much for her. In her opinion, freelance journalism was more tedious than answering a few calls and setting up appointment dates. However, it was only her first day at work and it didn't seem like a busy day so she shouldn't be so hasty to jump to conclusions.
With that in mind, she gently walked to the door of the office and knocked twice before opening the door. He had told her not to bother standing by the door after knocking. She found it odd that he already knew she was the one coming like he could read her mind or something like that.
However, it was her smell that gave her away. Jason would not forget that lovely scent, it was distinctly hers.
"How may I help you Jasmine?" he asked when she stepped in, with that stern voice of his. She was getting used to this side of him so she wasn't so fazed anymore.
"Well, I was going out for lunch and I was wondering if you could join me if only you'd want to. Plus I'm not too familiar with the surroundings so it would be nice if you could recommend some good locations for me," she said in one breath.
It wasn't a planned speech, but as soon as she opened her mouth to speak the words just came out one after the other.
Thank goodness she was able to finish her sentence even with the icy stare he was sending her way. His face was completely blank and held no emotion at all.
She was sure he was going to refuse her offer, he looked like that was exactly what he planned to do. However, she was not one to give up that easily so she was already planning what next to say to persuade this handsome devil.
"Okay, give me a minute," he replied.
"Wait, what!" She exclaimed.
He chuckled a little while giving her a look like he thought she was going a little bit crazy, the cute kind of crazy.
"I'm joining you for lunch as you offered, why do you look so surprised?" He asked with a sly grin.
Oh! Two can play this game, Jason.
"Well you didn't look like you were going to accept my proposal," she told him. There was no point beating around the bush, he knew what he was doing, it was intentional.
"Oh, are we getting married now?" He mocked her, raising his eyebrow suggestively.
She was lost for words. How could someone behave so contradictory so fast? It was like he was two persons in one and she hated it. He was completely unpredictable, always finding a way to tease her or test her patience. Well, she asked for his attention, she wanted him to notice her, so why was she complaining?
"Erm, erm, sorry… but.." She tried to string words together to reply to him but she was hopelessly failing to do that. He always made her speechless, out of pure embarrassment.
"It's okay Jasmine, I was only joking!"
Some joke that was!
"Hmm, yeah, I knew that," she asserted, straightening her skirt.
She was just trying to act busy, anything to keep her from looking into his eyes full of mischief. She did not like being this way, but Jason seemed to be a master of evoking strange emotions in her.
She was always in control of her emotions. Nothing fazed her anymore as she has seen the worst and best of man, sadly there were too little good and too much evil in man. So early on she had to put on this facade regardless of how she felt inside.
It helped her forget the nights she cried herself to sleep following the loss of her parents. It helped her survive all the foster homes she bounced back and forth through. She was not lucky enough to find a home she could find love. Someone like her was not made for love anyways. She was better off alone. She was a survivor and she was doing just fine by herself.
"Let's go, Jasmine, I know somewhere you might like."
His voice brought her back to reality. He was right beside her and she wasn't even sure when he walked toward her. With him being so close to her, he felt almost intimidating. He was tall, but so was she for a woman, but it was a particular aura around him that brought about this formidable presence.
She nodded and walked past him as he held the door for her to pass. She thought he was doing too much acting all gentlemanly, she was used to doing everything herself, including opening her doors.
However, to Jason, this was just a simple gesture, one of the many things he would do for anyone, even though to him Jasmine was not just anyone, not in the slightest bit.
Chapter 8 All eyes were on them as they walked together out of the company building, everyone from the staff on the top floor to Claire the receptionist behind her counter. She could imagine herself being the talk of the day on every employee's lips. Jason did not care. Even though he was particular about his public image, he saw no need to hide his relationship with Jasmine. They are just going for lunch, nothing more. They would have a lot more to talk about when he eventually claimed her as his mate. His employee had creative minds, after all, it was an entertainment agency, so he could already imagine them creating a billion scenarios just because he was seen walking beside the new secretary. It was obvious that this was a rare sight to behold. Jason Halem always walked alone, unless when work forced him to relate with humans. As a result, he didn't blame them for acting so shocked. "Are you okay with so much attention?" He asked Jasmine. He was concerned about how she was de
CHAPTER 9"So on a scale of 1 to 10, how was it?" Jason asked. "Do you mean the food?" Jasmine asked to clarify. He nodded with an expectant look on his face. "Well it broke my scale, that's for sure, it was delicious!" She replied. He smiled at that, one of those genuine smiles of his that brought more colour to his stunning eyes. "I knew you'd like it," he told her. "Thank you," she said out loud, but she wanted to say "I'm sorry", but her cold heart rationalized that there was nothing to be sorry for, at least not yet. Even though she had the worst intentions she hasn't done anything wrong yet. However, her lack of action wasn't because of unwillingness, she just hadn't gotten the chance yet. "So how's work so far?" He asked. It was obvious he was trying to keep the conversation going, it was cute seeing him trying to make small talk. She knew he wasn't one to waste words, he was one of those annoying straight to the point kind of people. Seeing him making so much effort
CHAPTER 10"I'm not really in the mood for whatever naughty imaginations going through your mind right now Nathan," Jason made clear while settling down in the office chair. "Well that's too bad, because I'm in the mood to make fun of you," Nathan replied with a smile breaking on his lips. "Make fun of me all you want, but don't drag Jasmine into your childish games" Jason cautioned him. Nathan flinched a little. He especially hated being called childish, even if it was implied. He was always treated like a child, always protected and told to hide. But he wasn't a child anymore and it was hard for his big brother to realize that he was now a man. Jason rarely said that to him, unless when it was really serious, he knew he hated the word too so he must be onto something here. "So she has a name, after all, Jasmine…. She sounds feisty," He spoke like he was putting an image to the name. His eyes were squinted like he was actually thinking about something serious. Jason did not lik
CHAPTER 11The time till the close of work felt different for Jasmine and Jason. They both had a lot on their mind but somehow felt differently about how the day progressed. They were so close to each other yet it felt like they were in different worlds. Jasmine thought the time was exceedingly slow, she could not just wait to get off this extremely boring work and have a good night's rest. Her only interest here was Jason and when she wasn't with him, the job felt pointless. Plus she had a few less interesting freelance writing she was doing to keep herself busy. They were not as fun as the case she was currently working tooth and nail for, but at least she was able to write, which was all she ever wanted to do. Jason on the other hand felt like time was moving too fast. If he could stop the hands of time right now he would do it. He wondered why werewolves didn't have such powers, it was a ludicrous thought of course, but at moments like this, his mind just wanders. He could not
CHAPTER 12 They got to her apartment a few minutes later, it was not far from the office and Jasmine could have easily taken a taxi, but there wouldn't be any fun in that. Moreover, it would mean that he wouldn't get to spend more time with her. "Just stop over here," she told him, directing him to her particular apartment building. He laughed when she said that. Jasmine could not fathom was what so funny this time around. She thought he was a little bit crazier than she expected. "Why are you laughing?!" She asked him. "I'm sorry, it's just that I already know where you live, you work for me remember? And I own this building, plus your car is not parked here, " he replied. "Oh!" She exclaimed, "well you should have just said so earlier," she said, giving him a little shove at the shoulder. She felt like the earth could just open up and swallow her. He was having a blast considering how hard he was still laughing at the little misunderstanding. It wasn't her fault that she did
CHAPTER 13You could feel the tension in the big sitting room, it was choking. As soon as Jason left the entrance of the door toward mama Helen, all heads bowed down, their inner werewolf moved them into submission. It did not matter how long they had seen each other. He was their Alpha and their inner wolf craved to show him the utmost respect whenever he was in their presence. Only mama Helen could look him in the eye when he didn't signal for her to. She was like a mother to him, but even her body language and the way she comported herself showed she was not immune to this Alpha pull to submission. Her embrace was soothing and warm, a far cry from how vulnerable he felt with Jasmine a while ago. However, he could not be anything but strong here with his pack. With Jasmine he could feel things he normally wouldn't feel, he could be more himself without the need for excess show of masculinity. "How have you been , mama?" He asked her. He often called her mama because she felt li
CHAPTER 14The air was particularly gloomy today. It rained cats and dogs the previous day and it was looking like it might be another episode of that today. It's been days since Jasmine last saw Jason, he promised her dinner and hope for a future together with her but all that disappeared into thin air. She wasn't surprised though, she was already used to being disappointed, that was life. "Hello Jasmine, how was lunch?" Claire asked when she stepped into the building. "The food was nice Claire." "Did you go to the spot that the boss showed you again?" She asked. "Yes I did," she replied with a sad smile. It was foolish of her to hope but still she did. What they shared that night was magical, at least she felt so. She had been going to what was now 'their restaurant.' She wondered if she could maybe see him there, just maybe. It didn't help though that the stylish young waiter was always asking about Jason, apparently he thought they were a couple. If only he knew…"You know
CHAPTER 15They drove first to her apartment so she could change into something more "dinner worthy." He thought she looked perfect just the way she was, but she insisted that she had to wear something more befitting. It took an hour for her to get ready, but to Jason it was a win-win situation; he got to see what the inside of her apartment looked like. "You know it's kind of weird that I get to see your apartment first before our dinner, usually it's the other way around," he noted, looking around the room. "I guess we're not exactly the ideal partners either," she said, trying to put a word to what they were. "Partners?" He chuckled while asking."I don't know….. what exactly are we Jason?" She asked him. "We can say we're a couple, you already know how I feel about you," he said gently. "Yeah, but like… it's not really official yet, I'd prefer if we take things slow….plus you've not really asked me to be your girlfriend," she rambled on, trying to look for any excuse. "We
Chapter 62Jasmine woke up with what felt like an epiphany, like she was feeling things for the very first time but those emotions had always been there. She felt a longing, a need to be held by a familiar hand, she had a craving to be in the warm embrace of someone… and that someone was Jason. From the moment she woke up he was all she wanted to see, but it was strange because she had a recollection of the emotions but she still had no memory of Jason, she still had no recollection of him or their time together, but these strange feeling of familiarity surged through her in ways she could not explain. Just then Jason came into her hospital room, putting a face to the emotions going through her. She knew she loved him, but how could she love someone she still could not remember. "You're awake!" He exclaimed as soon as he saw her. He rushed to her side and cautiously held her hand, he wasn't sure how she would react to a gesture like that so he was being careful. She didn't push
Chapter 61 "How do you think I feel? Hope, my world is crumbling right before me and there's nothing I can do about it," he yelled. "I'm sorry Jason, I didn't know that it would turn out like this," she pleaded. "How exactly did you think this would turn out, please tell me what was your plan exactly?" He asked her, unmoved by the tears that were starting to form in her eyes. "Well I knew there was bad blood between Dominic and I, but I didn't know that he would react that way. I thought he would be willing to help because of the history we had," she explained. "And what sort of history do you have with someone like that?" He asked her sternly. She hesitated before she answered his question and all Jaosn was able to think was that she was trying to think of a good lie to tell him. He could never believe a word that came from her mouth, not even if she promised that she was telling the truth, not even if she swore on her life. Certainly she didn't think that he would believe a
Chapter 60 Jason had never seen Dominic even though he had heard so much about him, but the man standing in front of him right now looked every bit like the image he portrayed. Dominic was tall and slim built with very broad shoulders and a slim waist. He had scanty brown hair and light brown eyes. He wasn't built like your stereotypical werewolf but one look at his sharp eyes and you'd know that he was the embodiment of evil. He had very thin lips that stretched into an evil smirk every now and then, like it was his default expression. Jason has been with him for less than 5 minutes and he could already tell that it was a big mistake coming here in the first place if this was the guy that they were supposed to meet. This man was not someone that was ready to help, especially with whatever was going on between him and Hope. "Can you believe it! The prodigal daughter finally returns!" He exclaimed as soon as he saw Hope. For a moment there Jason wondered how exactly Hope became
Chapter 59"Don't raise your voice, people might suspect otherwise," Hope cautioned him. And true to her words two tall pale looking men that looked like they were in their late thirties glanced towards their direction. They each had a partner with them and from one glance you already could tell what was going on. They were vampires, the kind with old blood from the color of their eyes and their sunken dark eye sockets. Also their reflexes were extremely sharp but they were extraordinarily calm, perfectly capable of controlling their emotions, unlike the modern day vampires that reacted to everything around them. Most vampires were intensely sensitive, erratic in motion and annoyingly unstable, especially in the presence of werewolves, whom for some weird reason they considered rivals. These two however were unusually calm even though the supernaturals have already identified what each was. It was obvious that they had been around for a very long time from the way they controlled
Chapter 58 Jason was starting to get suspicious… well he had always been suspicious but this time around his gut feeling thought that there was something very wrong, and it was a lot more than usual. One would think that maybe Hope had forgotten the whereabouts of this friend that would lead them to this witch that could solve all their problems. "Hope, how long till we get there already, I've been driving for hours but it seems this friend of yours lives on the other side of earth!" He said sternly, just like he had said a few times before. "We're almost there, just keep following the directions I gave you," she would always say. She was being way too mysterious with everything. She had refused to give out the exact location of this source of hers, for this source's security, she had said. Well that's nice, but what about their own security? He didn't exactly feel 100% safe going blind into a place that he had no information on, to see someone he had no idea about. Who exactl
Chapter 57 After what looked like an eternity of awkward silence in the hotel room, they all finally checked out of the hotel and were back on the road. Chad was extremely polite this morning, somehow he seemed to have finally found his manners and still avoided eye contact with the trio. He was more than happy to speed up the process of checking them out of his hotel as he could not wait to finally be rid of the three extremely strange, terrifying people. "Have a nice day," Chad told them as they made to leave. "We sure will, you too Chad," Hope answered. She seemed to be in a good mood, unlike the other two, who were already halfway to the vehicle by the time he spoke. All Jasmine wanted to do was get as far away from here as soon as possible. She wanted to forget everything that happened in this place and she reasoned that the farther away from here that she was, the sooner she would let all the experiences go. However she was only kidding herself. She had no potion to make
Chapter 56 Jason was up by dawn, he had always had trouble sleeping and the nightmares were back, fiercer than before. They only stopped when he was with Jasmine, when she was still the woman that loved him as much as he loved her, she gave him the kind of peace he could not comprehend, but now that was gone and he was back to the nights of terror. This nightmare was a new one, it was confusing and he could only vaguely remember it, but one part that stuck with him was that he was searching for something, but he found another thing instead. He could not remember what he was searching for, nor what he found instead, but he knew there was a mismatch. He felt lost in the dream, just as lost as he felt in real life. He woke up sweating even though the air conditioner in the room was working to an extent, it wasn't perfect but at least it wasn't completely broken down. His first reaction was to look towards Jasmine and he saw her sleeping soundly like the beauty that she was. What a
Chapter 55If you had told Jasmine that she would be spending a night in the same room with the annoying Jason she definitely would not have believed you. Even if you had come with a crystal ball, a palm reader and a soothsayer, she would have laughed at your face and reminded you that she didn't believe in most of these fetish stuff. Knowing that werewolves, vampires and witches exist was even a stretch to her belief system, adding all these other kinds of people might just be the last straw before she goes gaga. Unfortunately though this was just a coincidence and not something planned by fate. She recalled the look of pure fear in Chad's eyes as he announced that there were only 2 rooms left. The poor guy was already at the verge of pissing in his pants and any moment from now he could even faint if pushed any further. She tugged on Jason's shirt, prompting him to accept the rooms as it were. Nobody noticed that she did this apart from Jason himself. Hope was too busy staring
Chapter 54 "You do know that we've been waiting here, trying to get someone to attend to us for what seems like forever and you just show up like you don't even care?!" Hope said with disgust clearly written over her face, and conveyed through the tone of her voice. She was usually able to hide her feelings, to put on a mask, to pretend to feel something else apart from her true feelings, to smile and say everything was alright even when it wasn't. She had been so used to this facade that it almost felt like she was living two lives, walking about in a life of two faces. She had to do this because nobody really understood her, they could say they did, but she knew they would be lying. How could they? Nobody ever gave her a chance to tell her own story, no one ever thought for a second if she was alright or not. They brushed off her feelings because she wasn't a fragile human like Jasmine and her werewolf bloodline wasn't royal like Jason and Nathan. Life was never kind to her bu
