Adrian’s POV

The soft rhythm of Sarah’s breathing filled the room, each rise and fall of her chest a quiet reassurance that she was still with us. I exhaled slowly, leaning back in the chair I’d pulled closer to her bedside. My fingers rested against hers, unwilling to let go even now.

Three days. Three agonizing days of watching her motionless, wondering if she’d wake up. It felt like I had been holding my breath the entire time, balancing on the edge of a knife. And now, seeing her awake, hearing her voice—even as faint as it was—felt like a weight I hadn’t realized I was carrying had finally been lifted.

I glanced over at Nora, curled up next to Sarah with her stuffed bunny tucked securely under her arm. She had been my anchor through this nightmare, her fierce determination keeping me grounded. I smiled faintly, brushing a hand through my hair. That little girl was her mother’s mirror in so many ways—strong-willed, brave, and far too good for someone like me.

Sarah’s POVAdrian’s face darkened as realization dawned on him. His silence was louder than any words he could have said.“It was Emily,” he said, his tone cold and unyielding. “She did this.”I swallowed hard, my mind racing. Why would Emily—someone with power, status, and wealth—go to such lengths? What did she stand to gain from harming me?“Adrian,” I whispered, forcing my voice to remain steady despite the storm brewing within me. “Why would she do this? What does she want from me?”He didn’t answer right away, his expression a mixture of anger and concern. “I don’t know. But I’m going to find out.”“No,” I said quickly, my voice sharper than intended. His gaze snapped to mine, startled. “You can’t just go after her. She’s dangerous, Adrian. You don’t know what she’s capable of.”“And leaving her unchecked is an option?” His tone rose slightly, his frustration evident.I reached for his arm, gripping it tightly. “Please, Adrian. Don’t do anything reckless. If she’s capable of th

Adrian's POV Sarah's eyebrows remained scrunched up as she continued deep in thought. I decided to change the topic.“So, are you coming back home when you're discharged?” I asked her, trying but failing to mask the eagerness in my voice. She smiled and reached for my hand, giving it a small squeeze. It was the first time she initiated contact and the gesture fanned the hope in my heart. The hope that our marriage had gone beyond being just a contract. “Yes, Adrian.” She replied. “Nora and I will go back home with you. Her class teacher hasn't let me rest since we left home.”She laughed, lowering her eyes to meet mine. “Thank you for standing by me, Adrian. I really appreciate it.”Fueled by the moment, I raised our clasped hands to my lips and kissed her hand. Her eyes widened briefly before her lips stretched in a smile.“Do you have any idea how much more beautiful you get when you smile?” I let out before I could stop myself. As cheesy as it sounded, it was enough to make Sa

Sarah's POVThe warmth of Adrian’s hands still lingered on my skin, and the memory of his lips on mine played over and over in my mind. My heart pounded wildly, my emotions a tangled mess of excitement and fear.I had kissed Adrian. And worse, I had wanted to.I swallowed hard, trying to steady my racing thoughts. This was more than I had ever prepared myself for. Our marriage had started as a contract—nothing more, nothing less. But somewhere along the way, things had shifted. I had shifted.I glanced up at Adrian, who was watching me with a softness I wasn’t sure I could handle. His forehead still rested against mine, his hands cradling my face as if I were something fragile, something precious. How had we gotten here?“Sarah,” he murmured, his voice steady, grounding.I forced a small smile, trying to mask the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside me. “You’re full of surprises today, Adrian.”He chuckled, but his grip on me didn’t loosen. “You told me not to stop,” he reminded me.

Adrian’s POVSarah was trying to act normal, but I could see right through her. She was rattled. Her hands trembled slightly as she picked at her food, her gaze fixed on the plate like it held the answers to the questions she was too afraid to ask. I could still feel the ghost of her lips on mine, the way she had clung to me last night, the way she had let herself need me—just for a moment. And now, she was pulling away.I leaned back slightly, keeping my focus on Nora as she rambled about her book. She was animated, her small hands moving wildly as she explained the story."—and then the princess didn’t need saving because she had a sword of her own!" Nora declared proudly.I smirked. "Sounds like my kind of princess."Sarah shot me a look, something unreadable flickering in her eyes before she dropped her gaze again.Nora giggled. "Mommy says I should always believe I can save myself, but it’s okay to let people help sometimes."Sarah stiffened beside me.She wasn’t looking at me, b

Sarah’s POVThe moment Adrian left, the air in the room felt heavier. I exhaled, trying to shake off the lingering tension, but it clung to me like a second skin. That call—his name flashing on my screen—had sent a cold wave through my veins. I had silenced it quickly, but the weight of it hadn’t faded.I didn’t want Adrian to know. Not yet.“Mommy?”I snapped out of my thoughts and turned to Nora, who was watching me with those sharp, observant eyes of hers. She tilted her head slightly, a hint of concern creasing her small features.“Are you okay?” she asked softly.I forced a smile, reaching out to tuck a loose curl behind her ear. “Of course, sweetheart. Just a little tired.”She didn’t look convinced, but before she could press, she climbed onto the bed and curled up beside me, her small hands holding onto my arm.“Can we read?” she asked, already pulling a book from her bag.I nodded, grateful for the distraction. “Of course.”As she flipped open the pages, her excited voice fil

Adrian’s POVI drummed my fingers against the conference table, barely registering the back-and-forth between my executives. My focus was elsewhere. On her.On that call.On the way Sarah had shut down the moment she saw the name on her screen.I had seen the flicker of fear in her eyes, the way her fingers trembled as she silenced it. She had tried to brush it off, but I wasn’t a fool.Whoever had called her had gotten under her skin.“Mr. Blackwood?”I blinked, snapping back to the present. Across the table, one of my executives—Howard, I think—was watching me expectantly.I forced a neutral expression. “Repeat that.”Neville shot me a knowing look from beside me but stayed silent.Howard cleared his throat. “We need to confirm whether we’re going ahead with the revised budget proposal for the next quarter. Given the projected losses, it might be time to consider cost-cutting measures.”I leaned back, considering my options. Normally, I would have weighed every factor carefully befo

But hearing her say it, feeling the unwavering certainty in her voice, made something inside me waver. For a moment, I let myself lean into it. The food, the company, the illusion of safety. But the truth was still there, lurking at the back of my mind.Michael had found me.And he wasn’t going to stop.I set my spoon down carefully, my appetite fading despite the warmth of Clara’s cooking. My fingers itched to grab my phone, to check if another message had come in, but I forced myself to stay still. No more looking over my shoulder. No more living in fear.Adrian was watching me. Sarah's POV I shook my head. “No. I don’t—I don’t remember you.”“Of course, you wouldn’t,” she said, shrugging. “Your parents sold me so they could have money to raise you.”The air in the room grew impossibly heavy, suffocating.Sold.The word echoed in my mind, clawing at my chest like something alive. My grip tightened around the Polaroid, my vision blurring at the edges. “That’s not true.”Emily tilted her head, her smirk fading into something more unreadable. “Isn’t it? Then tell me, Sarah, where was I all these years? Why did I grow up being passed around like some unwanted burden while you had a home?”I wanted to deny it. To tell her she was wrong. But the truth was—I didn’t know.I had always been an only child, never thinking of the possibility that I could have a sibling somewhere. And now, with this revelation hanging between us, a sick feeling settled in my gut.Adrian stepped forward, his body rigid with restrained anger. “That doesn’t prove anything. Where did you eve

Adrian’s POVThe laughter around the dinner table was something I hadn’t realized I missed until now. It wasn’t forced, wasn’t cautious—it was easy, natural. Even Emily, though still reserved, looked more at ease than she had since she arrived.I glanced at Sarah, watching as she gently wiped a smudge of mac and cheese from Alex’s cheek. She was in her element, smiling, laughing softly at something Julian said. She caught my gaze, her eyes meeting mine. And in that brief moment, I saw it—the quiet satisfaction, the relief, the warmth of knowing that, for tonight, things were okay.I squeezed her thighs, reached for my water with the other hand and taking a slow sip before setting the glass down. The conversation had drifted toward the kids and their adventures at the park, but my mind was already shifting to what awaited me in the study.Evidence. Proof. A way to finally put an end to Rome and Daniella’s sabotage.Julian caught my eye, as if sensing my thoughts. He gave a small nod, t

Sarah’s POVBalancing the tray of beverages, I returned to the study with Emily and Julian following behind me. I set the tray on the table, pouring a cup of coffee for Julian and tea for Emily before handing Adrian his usual black coffee.Adrian gave me a brief nod of thanks, his focus already back on the documents in front of him. Emily sat stiffly, her fingers curled around her teacup, while Julian leaned back, watching Adrian sift through the papers.I didn’t linger. “I’ll leave you to it,” I said, straightening. “The kids are in the living room. I’ll be with them.”Adrian caught my hand briefly, squeezing it before letting go. I squeezed back before stepping out, closing the door softly behind me.I had barely reached the living room when I heard a door open behind me. Emily stepped out of the study, her gaze flicking toward me before quickly looking away.“I just need the bathroom,” she murmured, heading down the hall.I hesitated for a moment before following. Adrian’s POVI tapped my pen against the desk, my mind drifting away from the reports in front of me. It was impossible to focus when I knew what was coming. The board meeting was only a few days away, and if I didn’t have solid proof against Rome and Daniella, everything I’d built—everything my father built—would slip right through my fingers. The sound of the door opening made me glance up. Julian stepped in, his hands in his pockets, his usual air of arrogance dimmed by something quieter.I leaned back in my chair. “Didn’t think I’d be seeing you today.”Julian gave a half-shrug before settling into the chair across from me. “Yeah, well… Sarah thinks I should stop avoiding you.”A small smirk tugged at my lips. “She’s right.”He let out a breath. “Look, I know I messed up. I shouldn’t have backed out the way I did. If I’d stayed—”“Julian, how many times do I have to tell you?” My voice came out firmer than I intended. Sarah’s POVI could still feel the warmth of Adrian’s kiss as I left his office, my mind already racing with a plan.If Rome and Daniella wanted to tear this company apart from the inside, then we needed to strengthen the foundation. And that started with the employees. As I walked through the hallway, I passed Julian’s room. The door was slightly open, but the bed was empty. He had left in a hurry this morning, barely saying a word. Something was off with him, but I didn’t have time to dwell on it now.I reached for my phone and dialed Emily. She picked up on the second ring.“Sarah?” Her voice held a mix of surprise and exhaustion.“Hey, Em. I need your help.”She sighed. “If this is about Rome, trust me, I want him gone as much as you do.”“Then let’s make it happen.”There was a pause. “What do you mean, is Adrian ready to help me go against him?”I glanced down the hallway to make sure I was alone before speaking. “You’ve been gathering evidence for your divorce. Adrian’s POVThe morning light filtered through the windows, casting a golden glow over the living room. For the first time in weeks, I allowed myself a moment of peace.Sarah was curled up on the couch, sipping a cup of tea, and Nora was sprawled out on the floor with her coloring book, humming softly to herself. It was the weekend and we'd just finished breakfast, after which Julian had hurriedly left the house without saying a word.It was a rare quiet morning. No urgent calls. No crisis. Just my family.I leaned against the doorway, taking it all in. Sarah glanced up, her gaze meeting mine. A soft smile played on her lips."You're staring," she teased.I smirked. "Can you blame me?"She rolled her eyes, but the blush on her cheeks gave her away.I walked over and pressed a kiss to the top of her head before settling beside her. Nora perked up at the movement, turning her bright eyes on me.“Daddy, can I show you my picture?”“Of course, princess.”She proudly held up the page, a c

Sarah’s POVThe tension in the house was thick enough to cut with a knife. I had seen Adrian in battle mode before, but this was different. He wasn’t just fighting to protect the company—he was fighting to protect himself. His name. His legacy. And I hated that he had to go through this. The moment I sent Nora off to school, I found myself pacing the living room, my heart twisting with unease. Adrian had made it clear he didn’t want me involved, not after everything I’d already been through. But sitting back and watching him carry this weight alone? That wasn’t something I could do either.A knock at the door startled me.I hurried to open it, relieved to see Dr. Monroe.“You got my message,” I said, stepping aside. She nodded, her gaze warm and knowing. “You sounded like you needed someone to talk to.”I did.I led her to the couch, exhaling shakily as I sat down. “It’s happening again.”Dr. Monroe’s expression softened. “You mean the panic attacks?”I nodded. “Every time things star

Adrian’s POVI stared at the email, my mind already working through the implications. Rome and Daniella weren’t wasting time. The financial sabotage was only the beginning. If I was right—and I usually was— the next phase would be hitting soon. And I needed to be ready.I straightened, glancing at Sarah. She was watching me closely, concern shadowing her eyes. I reached for her hand, squeezing it lightly. “I’ll handle this.”She exhaled softly, nodding, but I could tell she wasn’t convinced.Neither was I.The moment Sarah left to check on Nora, I grabbed my phone and dialed Neville. He picked up on the second ring.“I saw the email.” I said without preamble.“Yeah. Classic setup. Just enough money moved around to raise suspicion but not enough to be an obvious hack job.” His voice was steady, but I could hear the tension beneath it. “What’s the move?”“Monitor, but don’t interfere yet,” I said, pacing toward the window. The expanse of land stretched before me, the early morning dew s

Sarah’s POVThe scent of freshly baked chicken pot pie filled the kitchen as I set the plates on the table. Nora sat on her booster seat, swinging her legs excitedly while Adrian poured her a glass of water. For a little while, everything felt normal. Warm. Safe. Like a family should. But my mind was elsewhere.I kept replaying my conversation with Emily—her quiet desperation, the way her hands trembled when she spoke. She wasn’t just scared of Rome; she was trapped.I knew that feeling too well.I had spent years running from my past, from the people who tried to control me, from the pain that never fully left. But Emily—she didn’t have the luxury of running. Not when she had children to protect.“Mommy, why are you staring at your plate?” Nora’s voice pulled me from my thoughts. She frowned, her tiny fingers pushing her fork toward me. “Eat. You said food is important.”I smiled, brushing a stray curl from her face. “You’re right, sweetheart.” I picked up my fork and took a bite, bu

Adrian’s POVI leaned back in my chair, fingers steepled beneath my chin, as I stared at the mountain of paperwork in front of me. It had been another exhausting day—back-to-back meetings, endless negotiations, and a never-ending fight to keep the company stable in the wake of Rome and Daniella’s sabotage. And now, I had another problem.Sarah sat across from me, her expression unreadable, but I could tell something was weighing heavily on her. She hadn’t spoken yet—not really. Just a few hesitant words when she first walked in, a quiet "We need to talk."I had learned to take those words seriously. So, I set my pen down, giving her my full attention. “Alright. I’m listening.”She inhaled deeply, as if preparing herself for whatever she was about to say. “I met with Emily today.”I nodded slowly. That wasn’t surprising. Sarah had mentioned Emily reaching out after she left the hospital. What was surprising was the look in her eyes—the hesitation, the concern, the fear.Something was w
