Mr. Badmus is into real estate, he is the CEO and has a printing press company, and his wife runs a fashion home, she also offered online teaching classes to those that are interested in creating their unique styles. The couple is always on the move, busier than the word busy itself.
They had a son, talking about their only son, Johnson who will be three years old by June. He has five extra months to be a big boy. The boy usually plays with the workers at the fashion house whenever he comes back from school.
At any time the couple has a business trip to run, the boy is safe with them in the fashion house. Only if the busy trip is within Abuja, any tour outside the sphere of Abuja is the whole family trip.
"Dear, you took a longer time than usual to dress, have you forgotten we are driving to Lugbe this morning?" Mr. Badmus hurried his wife.
"Honey give me a second more, I will meet you in the car." Madam Florence replied to her husband from inside the dressing room.
Mr. Badmus sat for additional five minutes before his wife joined him in the car. It was Saturday morning, Johnson was in the car with them. "Only heaven knows what usually keeps you while adorning, you are inherently stunning, this makeup of a thing is just a waste of time," madam Florence listen to her husband speak while she used the rear mirror to perfect her makeup.
They drove very fast from Mpape to Lugbe. They spent 40 minutes, and they arrived at the hospital at 7 o'clock in the morning. Mr. Badmus called doctor Frank when they were about to leave their house.
Good morning Sir! The nurse at the reception greeted them. The two nurses sat in the reception room, they are different from those that admitted Tonia the other day.
Good morning, Mr. Badmus returned the salutations. Meanwhile, madam Florence was struggling with her bag that got struck inside the car.
"What can we do for you?" The nurse asked politely.
"I am here to see the doctor, I called him earlier before coming," and Mr. Badmus was polite with his reply.
"Please wait here for him," the nurse said. She sent a text to the doctor, " I will soon be there," doctor Frank replied to the nurse. "Sir please wait for a little, he is on his way."
"I have no issue with that, but can I see a patient inside? Mr. Badmus asked for the nurse's opinion.
"What is the name of the patient sir?" The nurse asked while looking at the files on the table madam Florence walked in with Johnson.
"Honey is the doctor not in? I thought you said you called him before" she asked her husband questions. Mr. Badmus did not reply to his wife, instead, he faced the nurse.
"As I was saying, I don't know the girl's name, we rushed her here two days ago, she was admitted to ward..." he struggled to remember the ward number, madam Florence cuts in "it's ward 6."
"Tonia! You are talking about Tonia sir" said the second nurse. No problem, I will take you to her ward.
"Thank you" Mr. Badmus thanked the nurse. Both he and his family followed the nurse from behind till they got to the ward where Tonia was admitted.
Out of the money that Mr. Badmus sent to the hospital's account, they got a new dress for Tonia. Tonia has dressed waiting for the arrival of Mr. Badmus so that she can return back to her slum. She has prepared and warned herself not to cry when she sees them.
The nurse opened her ward door, she has been moved to a private ward. She knew they would be coming but not as soon as this. The apple she was holding fell when she saw Mr. Badmus and his wife.
"Tonia, you are going back to reality now!" she informed herself.
"Are you okay madam?" Florence asked. Johnson seeing Tonia for the first time ran to her, and he helped her to pick the apple, "take" the young boy said with an unclear voice. Tonia was startled by Madam Florence's question, and the young boy's voice returned her to the ward, she is not ready for the world outside the hospital yet.
"Thank you, cute baby," she said with a forced smile on her face. Madam Florence asked the question the second time "are you okay?" Yes, ma! She replied without hesitation.
"Thank goodness you are fine now, I was scared the day we brought you here, the nurse said your name is Tonia, is that correct?" Madam Florence inquired from her.
"Yes, ma! You are very correct.
"What a nice name you got! I am madam Florence, this is my husband Mr. Badmus you almost ran into our car while my husband was driving and this is my son Johnson." Madam Florence introduced herself and her family in a cute way to Tonia.
Tonia got down from the bed, she went on her knees to thank the couple for bringing her to the hospital.
"What are you doing?" Please get up, Mr. Badmus commanded her.
"I am okay this way sir", she was still on her knees, you saved my life, I am forever grateful for your kind deed," she was expressing her gratitude. She promised herself not to cry, but she can't control the drop.
Mr. Badmus patted her on her shoulder, "do you really want to show your appreciation?" he asked her. She nodded her head for a yes. "Good, stand up and stop embarrassing me with you being on your knees. I will listen to you only when you sit." Madam Florence gave her handkerchief to wipe her tears. She stood, walked back to her bed, and sat at the edge of it.
"What made you absent-minded that day?" Madam Florence asked. Tonia sighed... there was a light knock on the door, the doctor is available, and a nurse said through the door.
"Dear let go and see the doctor," Mr. Badmus said. Madam Florence whispered to Tonia "I will come back to hear what you have to say." The couple and their son left the ward to visit the doctor's office.
Doctor Frank welcomed the couple and their son. "Good morning Mr. Badmus", he exchanged a handshake with him. "Good morning doc! How is the work going?" Mr. Badmus returned the greetings."My work, I'm always busy, I give glory to the creator." Madam, you look radiant this morning, he poked fun at madam Florence."Doc you can say that again", she blushed with her response. Her husband did not have time to compliment her on dressing, to him makeup is a waste of time. Whenever someone compliments Madam Florence, she always feels the movement of butterflies in her stomach."Cute baby, what's your name?" Dr. Frank was asking for Johnson's name. Johnson mumbled, he is still little, and his words are not too clear."Did you say your name is Thompson?" Dr. asked. The boy nodded no. Let me guess again "Samson?". The boy screamed "Johnson! Johnson!! Johnson!!!"Sorry dear, I don't mean to get on your bad side, but I can't hear you correctly. The doctor said and gave Johnson a pack of candy to
Let's take her back to the ward, the doctor said. The nurses rushed in and Tonia was sent back to the private ward.Doctor, "Tonia just fainted hope she will be alright?" Madam Florence inquired."Madam, she will be fine, for now, let's not rush her with questions. Let's wait for her to speak by herself, with that we won't have to provoke her emotions anymore." Dr. Frank with his experience advising Madam Florence."Thank you doc! We will wait for her to wake before taking off. Once we leave now, we might not see her anymore. Mr. Badmus declared openly.Mr. Badmus and his family hang around the hospital, waiting for Tonia to wake up and the doctor was busy attending to his other patients.Tonia woke up two hours after she had fainted. She asked the nurse in the ward with her if Mr. Badmus and his family were still around. "They are waiting for you to come to life before saying goodbye," the nurse replied to her question."Where are they now?" Tonia asked another question."I overhear
On our way to see my mother, Mrs. Tina asked if I would like to eat doughnuts. I gave her the sign that I am okay. "You better eat to have the strength to look after her," Mrs. Tina said. By the use of the word "her", she was referring to my mom. I squeezed a smile out. If only she knew all that she was saying is itching my ears. All I care about is seeing my mom.A few minutes after we walked around the big hospital, we arrived at the ICU block. Having only watched it in movies, and patients in the ICU, it never occurred to me that one day in my life I will be standing, watching, and praying for my mother.I saw my mother with her eyes closed, breathing through the oxygen fixed to her. A pipe and mask connected to her mouth and nose. She laid down on the bed like yesterday's vegetable. How did she get to this stage? I asked myself. In my memory there was no record of her falling sick, I can't remember the last time she swallowed paracetamol. I stood at the glass outside watching m
Tonia proceeded with her story after taking a two minutes break. Mom and dad meeting is a plague in disguise, not a blessing at all."Young girl, be mindful of your words, exceptionally to your late parents", Mr. Badmus counselled her.Sir, you do not understand why I said so. My dad died without not knowing that his beloved wife was pregnant. In his record, he came to this world and was left without any descendants. I will let you know everything today. She mumbled some words inwardly, "don't cry, you can do this", to encourage herself. It all started 20 years ago, mom with her maiden name Lola, was posted to Ijebu-ode for her NYSC. My dad whose name is Jeremy, often addressed as Jay was posted to the same school as my mom.Mom at first did not like my dad because he is always found amid ladies. She said she always calls him 'woman wrapper'. One thing led to another and they both became best of friends. My mom was from Abeokuta, Ogun state Nigeria. Dad was also from Ogun state but th
Lola's mother was happy that her first daughter got a well-paid job with accommodation. Since the loss of her husband seven years ago, she has been taking care of her two daughters. Lola is done with her youth service and now with work, her sister newly earned admission to the University of Ibadan, and her mother blessed Lola's new job. Monday morning, Lola transited from Ibadan to Ijebu. Her house has been cleaned and set up by Jay's female friends. The distance from her new house to her office is 10 minutes walk. She loves her new environment. Every day she spent quality time with Jay. Every weekend she would run to Jay's house, uncle Matthew always avoid having contact with Lola.Instead of things getting better between Lola and uncle Matthew it was getting worse. Uncle Matthew knew Lola usually comes to the house for weekends, he will leave the house and go to his previous house, and spend the weekend there. One day, Jay comes up with a plan that will make his uncle accept Lola f
The relationship between Lola and Jay's uncle is not something to write about. The problem lingers till her third year in her marriage with Jay.Everyone speculated that the company belongs to Mr. Odumefun, who is uncle Matthew's friend, and not until when information reached Jay that the owner of the company will be coming to Ijebu for a meeting between staff. Jay and his wife agreed to propose for transfer to Lagos since they have headquarters there. For four years now Jay has been working with Zif company, he had not met the CEO once, the CEO is abroad based being. Jay looked forward to the impending meeting. Zif company is into the production of paints for houses and companies. They produced in large quantities, Jay works inside the packaging room and Paul works inside the production room. The CEO was notified about how the people he trusted are the ones digging for his downfall, and some members of staff from the production room liaised with the manager and accountant to steal so
Jay knew what his uncle meant earlier by his words, he wondered why his uncle can't direct the same strength he uses on him to advise his son to desist from an uncivilized act. He went in to meet his wife who has been waiting to celebrate the good news he brought home with him in an outstanding style. That night they were incredibly intense toward one another and it was a night of ecstasy for them. There was silence in the house till after one month. Mr. Eric appeared in Ijebu without prior notice, all the staff were shocked including Mr. Odumefun who has been acting as the CEO for a while now. Only Jay was glad to see him, the last time the meeting was inconclusive because Mr. Eric disappeared with the words 'we will continue the meeting when I return.' It took him one month to return! I hope he won't forget about sending me to Lagos, Jay wished.Three hours after Mr. Eric had settled in his office, he invited all the staff to see him in his office one after the order. He put them
Jay's supervisor was in a dialogue with one other staff member and Mr. Eric overheard them."Jay is not at work today, why?" Asked the other staff.I think his uncle has cautioned him at home, it's better he didn't come to work till when Mr. Eric will return to where he came from. Yesterday when Mr. Eric called me, you won't believe Jay has said to him that I am a bad person", words from the mouth of the supervisor."Jay is not such a person that would pull others down if there is no need for it. Did you do something bad to the company?" Asked the other staff."I didn't do anything bad, it's just that there were some money issues on the ground. Jay knew about it because we told him, it's not something to worry about. Get back to your work." The supervisor ordered the other staff out of his way.Mr. Eric knew those that mentioned Jay's name must be part of the embezzlement team."I've more staff to ease from duty than I had Imagined." He said and went to his office. Through the slight
Mr. Seye could not reckon that his wife harbored such impressions about him, he couldn't blame her much because he also had such a judgment against Mr. Peter. It is typical for anyone to worry in such a manner as Tonia for the past three months had no records of receiving any visitors.Mrs. Bolu regretted her actions, she was human so she must act that way. Tonia has what she the legal wife does not have. She was determined to ask for Tonia's forgiveness and apologize to her husband for her rude behaviour towards him earlier.Mr. Seye entered the room, and pretended like he didn't hear any of the arguments between the ladies, he gently went to bed because the wife acted like she was sleeping. She didn't know how to face her husband though, she thought her husband did not hear her earlier, but she felt miserable within.Maybe because families have begun to ask her the 'WHY' question as if she can produce a baby by herself. They seem to have forgotten that her marriage is only thirty-s
A week after Tonia moved into her new apartment, she started trading. She made a kiosk outside where she displayed her goods and there was a good turnover. She has helped her mother out managing the store countless times, she knew how to grow a business from scratch because her mother taught her the principle that connects buying and selling of goods before she slept in glory.Slowly and steadily her business began to grow, most people in the neighbourhood preferred to patronise her because of how fresh most of her goods are, and also she sells at an affordable price, she's not part of those that hike up the price of the stock. Though, she buys in small quantities. Her co-tenants were happy to have her watching over the house while they were away. They love how hardworking she is and also how cheerful and vibrant she has in no time turned the compound.Tonia stayed two months without contacting Mama, she went to the market, as usual, to buy what she will sell. She felt it would be al
Mama Agnes' final phrase struck Tonia's spirit if only Mama Agnes knew she wouldn't be returning anytime soon. She assumed she heard Mama's voice calling out to her, so she intensified her walk. She was lucky at the bus stop, the cab needed just one more passenger to occupy the last seat. She kept her load inside the boot and filled the leftover spot. It's common for drivers to tell their passengers to enter with change, to avoid fighting on the road. Though the driver forgot to inform her, she had the exact amount to pay without wasting each other's time at the bus stop. She left the house when the cloud still had a shade of darkness in it. By the time she arrived at her destination, the sun had shone brightly all over the space. She got to the new apartment, there were four tenants in number and occupied room two.She knew Mama would have seen the letter, she wanted to hear her voice before she pulled the sim into the phone. She was scared of reaching her, she felt she left too soon
She moved a few of her things to mama's room and the ones that are too heavy for her to move to her new place, she sold at a giveaway price. The other tenants were surprised by her actions, they comprehend she needs money to keep up.Four days later she got another apartment but she was yet to move into it. She thought of hanging around with mama for a few more days, she wanted to buy airtime outside, as she stepped out, she saw a familiar car coming from afar, she ran to the house, hid in the bathroom, and told Simon to lied to anyone that may come to look for her that she's not around.Behold, Jack came a minute later she had instructed Simon. "Hello, there!" Jack greeted people he met outside. The woman selling petty stuff, and a customer were standing outside, while Becky was in her room following through the window."Hello sir, what did you want to buy?" as a business woman she asked. Before Jack would say a thing, Becky hurried out of her room."Mama Agnes, not everybody is a
Mama thought for a while before giving a response to Tonia's question. "You don't necessarily need to travel down to the south, Abuja is large enough for you to hide without anyone knowing." Mama never wanted Tonia to be too far from her side, she wanted her within the suburb of Abuja."Mama, you know I seldom go out. Where in Abuja did you think is safe for me?" She asked the old lady."Well, we have places like Bwari, Gudu, Kuje, Maraba, and Gwagwalada. My dear houses in this area are affordable and the cost of living is not high." Mama gave her a list to choose from."Mama, thanks for your guidance. I will sleep over the list and pick the one my mind aligns with," Tonia let out."If you have discomfort sleeping here alone, you are free to poke in my room till when you will be leaving. Don't worry I will visit you every now and then." Mama said and returned to her room.Tonia was alone in her room, thinking of the best place to hide from the list. She decided to try Gwagwalada out.
Tonia bolted the door from behind instantly as she succeeded in sending Simon away. She sat on the floor beside her plate of Amala. She was hungry but she chose to open the envelope first. She screamed out of fear and lost her appetite after she read the letter."Tonia! It's not a mistake that I nicknamed you a stubborn cat, I will advise you not to prove stubborn with me."Don't you ever think that you can run away from me forever. I know your house and I can track you down any day if you attempt to play smart with me."I gave you a reasonable amount to flush out whatever that you said is growing in your belly, don't you dare think to pin me down with it, you've got the wrong person."I'd search for you and kill you with my hands, the day you think of creating any scandal for me. Like literally choke you to death."I will make earth unbearable for you and hell will also reject you. Maybe I am wrong and you are a nice person, but probably not. Watch your steps!!!"This was the letter
Tonia got home exhausted, while inside the taxi she had measured all that she would work out for the rest of the evening. She planned to take her bath first and then retire to bed till the next day when she will get a new phone.Tonia lives in a multi-tenanted building, her room is the third by the left. There were nine tenants altogether."Tonia, where have you been and you switched off your line?" One of the tenants asked her, as she just slipped out of the taxi. The woman sells petty things outside the compound."I went for a retreat," she said struggling to get her bag down from the car. There was a boy of 10 years old, seated outside, he ran to help Tonia with her bag."The retreat made your flesh start coming up," the woman teased her. Tonia blushed and went inside. She had a fifty naira note on her table days ago, before she left the house, she gave it to the boy that helped her.She felt sad a bit, she wished that her mother was alive, she would have told her about madam Flore
Jack expected me to repeat what I disclosed before. I knew very well the baby belonged to him, ever since the day that Jack forcefully laid himself on me, I got irked at the view of any man. No other person knew the color of my panties save Jack."It was confirmed by the hospital that I am pregnant with your child," I shouted out loud enough for him to hear."Tonia, you are joking right now?" A ridiculous question Jack asked."Why do I call to see urgently? If I don't have something as important as life to discuss with you, I wouldn't have pushed back on my words," I simply let him know.He howled, "What did you intend to gain from me with this pregnancy?" I could not believe what I had just heard. Did I ever say I wanted to be seen with him? I questioned why my belly allowed his seed to grow inside me."Jack, I didn't get myself pregnant, you did! Stop switching the blame on me. If you hadn't tipped me off with an aphrodisiac, we wouldn't be having this conversation, blame yourself
"When did you find out that you are pregnant?" Madam Florence raised a question. It was a few weeks ago. I was feeling sick repeatedly, I assumed it was the difficulty of the work I engaged myself in. Since the death of my mother, no help from anyone. I often visit people's houses and ask if they have any dirty clothes, I wash to get paid. The little I earned from it, I spent on my day-to-day feeding, it's better off than stealing. When I was feeling sick, I rushed to get Paracetamol at a nearby pharmacy. I only feel a bit relieved for short periods. After a while, the uneasy feeling resurfaced. One afternoon, I was on my way to get the usual paracetamol, and I stumbled on Dr. Alex, he was one of the doctors that gave attention to my mom at wuse hospital. He recognized me at once."Tonia, sorry about your mom's death. As doctors we tried our best," Dr. Alex confessed."Thanks, I knew you all tried everything within your span to keep her alive but death is stronger than us. She's resti
