"Oh my god! What a surprise, baby!" Birdie squealed and squeezed the man on the door in her arms while Jasmine stared at the two enveloping each other, smiling and swirling around.

"I missed you so much, Birdie. I had a dream that you were in danger. So... You see, I had to ask for a quick leave and come here."

"Not that I was far away! My boss was kind enough to give me some days with you." The man said happily, lifting Birdie and kissing her hair.

His stubbled face was weighed down with weariness. In his eyes, Jasmine saw exhaustion. They were red as if he had not had sleep for a week. But that's how he always looked. Jasmine knew that because he was HENRY, the person who delivered vegetables and fresh fruits at her marital house she shared with Vince.

He was in his mid twenties, a man who did his job seriously. Not to forget to mention that he had always been kind to Jasmine. After all, Jasmine was the one who always showed him the way to the kitchen to bring the vegetable and fr

14He came inside, patted Birdie on the back and she stepped into the kitchen to make some coffee. Meanwhile Henry came towards Jasmine and sat down on the floor."But you see, we are a broke couple. Our house is hardly any bigger than the size of your shower room.... And my girlfriend is naive. She's an emotional fool and easily gets fooled by people. My worry is justified, isn't it?""Please, forget what I said earlier and feel like you're home. I assure you that you are safe here. Be comfortable and don't mind my presence. Assume that I never came."Jasmine warily moved back onto the couch, suddenly feeling sweaty. Henry's changed demeanor caused her body to throb. Her ears began to blare with a beep sound while her heart began to jump up and down. His complete change in attitude seemed like those peaceful minutes before the arrival of chaos."No thanks, Henry. I don't want to cause any more trouble than there already is. I will leave in the evening—""Oh, no, you are not. Mrs. Gar

15Both Birdie and Jasmine froze in terror as they saw a man in a dark suit, hands casually in his pockets, leaning against the corridor wall behind Henry."Vince," Moisture gathered in the corner of Jasmine's eyes as her lips trembled. All the energy in her evaporated. Jasmine just stood there, speechless. She couldn't move. She couldn't breathe. The sound of his approaching footsteps echoed like a clap of thunder, resonating through the air like a sonic boom. "Hi, wifey!" Vince waved a hand at her with a smirk. He used to be an extremely handsome man when Jasmine fell in love with him. His curly blonde hair added to his charm. His gray eyes were captivating and seemed to sparkle with warmth. His features appeared strong and well-defined, giving him a hot yet refined look. And when he used to smile earlier, his whole face used to light up, making him even more attractive. But now... The same blonde curly hair seemed overly styled. His gray eyes looked dull and lifeless. His feat

16"We're sorry, sir. We looked everywhere we could to find your patient. But the woman has seemed to vanish to nowhere. There are no clips of her other than the one captured in the hospital's CCTV footage." Kyle swallowed the angry remarks building in his throat as his piercing dark eyes roved over Titus' face. His secretary looked terrified. He pulled on the collar of his shirt to allow cool air to graze his hot neck. Sweat beads trickled under his throat as he tried not to look fazed in front of his boss. "But do not worry, sir, the investigation squad is looking for her ceaselessly. I'll let you know if I find any clue." Kyle's dropping gaze indicated that Titus was permitted to leave. But as he stepped out, Kyle eased out of his cold demeanor. The mask of stoicism he wore cracked, letting confusion and frustration shine through. He leaned back in his chair and rocked sideways as a sigh escaped from deep in his chest. "Christ!" He ran his hands on his face before his eyes cam

17She saw his throat work, and the muscles around his neck ripple as he tried to reign in his emotions. "I will not tolerate such language from you, Lila Calvin! Be careful next time." "But if you want me to discipline you like your brother, do it again and you'll know." The low, husky warning in his voice urged her to make some more dirty comments so he would be inclined to punish her. Usually Kyle and her didn't have such a conversation. He didn't like it. Although he was a reputed Casanova in the country, he strangely behaved like a gentleman around her. After all, Lila was like a sister. Could a brother ever speak with his sister about someone trying to get into her pants? Even the thought of such conversation made Kyle's face twist in exasperation. However, Lila enjoyed pushing his buttons and thus continuously brought it up, knowing too well about his cold reaction. She also did it because she devoured his expressive side. Kyle, with all those expressions on his 'too damn

18A low burning, anger smoldered within Kyle. He clenched his jaw to the point that he was afraid it might snap. But there was nothing he could do to erase those memories. His childhood was marred by the trauma inflicted by his parents' decision; and everything that went wrong in his life, including his mother's leave and her abandoning him, was because of his father. After everything Karson Panther put his son through, how could he expect him to forget and forgive, and attend a dinner with his new family? Kyle sniggered outrageously. He hadn't had dinner with his father and his new family since they arrived in his life— which calculated to twenty years. He was determined to maintain his record of not showing up even today. The elevator opened with a ding and he stepped out sternly. He started walking faster which put Lila in a tight spot because she had to literally run after him to catch up in her long heels. When they arrived in the parking lot, Lila firmly restrained his arm

19Kyle stopped the car outside his father's manor in which he had many and very gruesome memories of his childhood before he had asked for himself to be rolled into a boarding school. It was a five story structure with a lot of windows and a stunning dome-like roof that rose high into the air. In the night sky it looked forebodingly beautiful. It was pearl white, although it glowed like dark silver in the night. Kyle unbuckled his seat belt but made no move that would suggest he wanted to step out. His eyes swam with emotions from the past. The dark flecks in his pupils grew onyx black as his jaw clenched. He was trying to hold himself together as he stared at the fountain before the gigantic house. It was of a woman hugging her arms, her head tilted to the right side and looking down. She complimented the manor as she was made with white clay. Kyle gulped his saliva because she always reminded him of his mother. The worst thing about the statue was that water gushed from the middle

20"How dare you touch my man, bitch!" Lila purred indignantly as she pressed Tania's head against the pillar."Asks who... The queen of all the bitches!" Tania sneered before she freed herself from Lila's hold and kicked her under her knee, making her almost go down on her knees. The air around them crackled. Both the girls growled at each other before grabbing each other's collars. Both of them pulled each other closer until their noses touched as they breathed heavily in exasperation."He's mine, whore! He's been mine since we were kids." Lila whispered in a scary tone.Tania rolled her eyes, not even one percent freaked out.If Lila was crazy... Tania was crazier in love with Kyle. Hence, she wasn't scared of Lila or her threats."Save that, wench! All he's ever been to you since childhood is a friend... Or more so, a brother." Tania sniggered, sending a jolt of maddening fury through Lila.Lila planted her against the pillar as she yanked her little top, tearing it from the middl

21Silence, once again, prevailed in the room. Karson was stunned and enveloped in a warm, fuzzy feeling of happiness to see his elder son join him for dinner for the first time in twenty years. Karson's heart shrunk in grief for all the sufferings Kyle went through as a child. After his divorce with Sophia, Kyle suffered the most. And the attempt to keep him away from consequences of their divorce resulted in a huge gap between them as father and son. "I'm so glad you came today, son. It still feels like a dream. I can't bring myself to believe my son is here with me!" Karson said while gazing at his son lovingly. "Speaking of my son, where is that scoundrel? Ruby?" Karson snapped, his brows furrowed as he turned to his wife. "I... Uh, honey, Kevin is busy. He's working tirelessly and putting in a lot of efforts to grow his new business." Ruby answered in a small voice while her cheeks burned in shame. She was mortified as her husband addressed their son harshly at the dinner ta

30Raw shock whipped into her face as she pushed herself away from me. She pretended to be nauseated by my question and turned around to act like she was throwing out as she also made those noises. "Like you? Keep dreaming, Panther! Who would like a playboy like you? You are a good friend... But boyfriend? Eww. I don't want to end up with aids. No, thank you." She said with an attitude and though I should feel humiliated, I was relieved to hear that. I pinched her chin to look at me and again she gave me that flustered look. But I wasn't fazed because I now knew her feelings towards me. "I'm glad that you don't see me that way, Lila. It's a favour you're doing on me." I smiled at her. "What if I really liked you hmm?" She asked teasingly and I left her alone. With a scoff I turned back to dry my hair, "As I said, you're doing a favour on me by not having such feelings for me. But if you did," I looked at her through the mirror, my eyes glowing darkly, honestly. "I would have hate

29 Kyle's POV When I woke up, the sky was bright and the warm rays of the sun shone off the ceramic vase holding big blue flowers near the window of my room. I looked at the clock on the wall and my jaw dropped. Fifteen past one! Damn, I was supposed to be at my father's house for breakfast. I got out of the bed hurriedly and dashed inside the shower for a quick bath. Lila was going to accompany me to breakfast. I wonder why she's not here already. Lila. My lips curved into a grin as I massaged shampoo into my hair, thinking about her. It's not like I need her to go with me to breakfast. But she still wants to go because she feels overprotective of me as if I'm her sister, not the other way around. The thing is, she doesn't like Tania and her behaviour around me. She hates it when Tania throws herself on me and acts all lovey dovey as if we could be an item if she tried harder to pursue me. Nothing will ever happen between her and me. Tania is the daughter of the woman who destro

28Kyle's POVThe last few days have been pretty rough for me. I barely ate food or met my friends or anyone else given I was locked up in my cabin taking back to back conferences or online meetings with overseas clients. Being the CEO of the rapidly rising business group is not easy, but I have to do it anyhow. This was my dream, after all. To be so successful that I wouldn't have a single second to think back about my past. I wanted this life and I have it. In the past few years I worked on climbing every ladder I could to make my name. I left no stone unturned, and in fact, there were no more rungs left after all these years of working so hard. I've climbed all the ladders that were there and now I'm aiming for whatever is there beyond the zenith of success I've achieved. But I wish my mother was alive. I wish I could show her what her departure did to me. What her decision of divorcing my father led me to become. I'm a heartless mercenary today. A man so focused on doubling and

27"I had no other choice. But it wasn't as terrifying as it sounds after we've found a way out." His lips curled into a dark smirk that made shivers erupt in my body. "My father can't go to bed without drinking. So Lucy makes sure he's utterly drunk before they get into bed." "Then a maid that we've hired to replace Lucy jumps into the bed with my father. She leaves only in the morning and then Lucy pretends that it's been her with him. This way she avoids my father from trying to touch her.""But those kisses in public? The way he gropes her ass in the parties, doesn't that infuriate you?" "Not as much as the thought of Lucy going back to GoldenRidge to her oppressor's brother." He shrugged coolly. "I can handle my father touching my woman more than other rascals. Not that my father's done anything more than that. He thinks he has Lucy at his mercy, but you know the truth." It makes sense. It's better to have a single bite of a tasty cake than to never have it. Vince is enjoying L

26My heart pounded violently in my chest and the trembling shot up in my arms and face.Vince appeared tired as if he wasn't very happy to reveal the truth. But when he started, my hatred for him grew intense."My relationship with Lucy is stronger and older than ours. I met her five years ago at a party. It was love at first sight for me. She also seemed interested in me when I made the first move. However, when I tried to touch her intimately, she'd jumped away." He paused to look up at me.I gave him a nod, showing that I wasn't affected by how the story started. But deep down, my muscles tangled as I suppressed my rage. I swallowed down the burn of acid in my throat as I tried to ignore the fact that my meeting with Vince, those days of our secret meetings after office hours I considered as dream come true, the proposal I thought was too filmy to be real, and the years I cherished as Mrs Vince has been nothing but a lie. A BIG FAT LIE. "She was wary that I might leave marks on

25Jasmine's POVI opened my eyes with a heavy feeling on my belly. I sat up straight, startled, as it reminded me of my miscarriage.I was sensitive. Although I got the time and space to mourn the death of my dear baby when I was at Birdie's, I was still not used to touching my belly as freely as before. Not without feeling my heart pounding in my chest. When I looked down at my stomach, my blood ran with vengeance in my veins. My eyes shot up as I saw red.The weight was from Vince's hand and he was sleeping beside me. It was dark in the room and there was no light outside the open windows, meaning the night had crept in. My muscles jumped under my skin in enrage as I tossed his hand away from my belly. My teeth chattered as my veins pumped with the urge to strangle him in his sleep. I wasn't so lucky to have my urge fulfilled because the light filled the room and Vince sat up rubbing his eyes. "What the hell is wrong with you? I had just fallen asleep, Jazz." 24 Jasmine stared at the shameless man standing arrogantly before her with his stepmom in his arms. 'Lucy? So she's 'just' Lucy to him. Great!' She scorned to herself before she turned around to try to crawl out. She hadn't moved an inch away when she felt Vince's fingers in her hair. He pulled her back and shoved her towards Lucy where she was standing... Right at her feet. "Apologize to her now!" He ground the words out as he pushed her head against Lucy's feet until her nose was touching the fur slippers. Pain tore through Jasmine's chest. She saw her tears dampen the fur as they fell one after another from her chin. "I said apologize, Jazz!" Disgust filled Jasmine's being. After doing all this, he still had the audacity to call her by her nickname. Jasmine couldn't move. The anguish of being treated like trash by her own husband sliced through her heart like a sharp sword. She reflected back on the time she doted on him as an obedient wife. All the years she cared for him

She felt like she was drowning.Correction— she didn't really feel like she was drowning, but actually as if she was being pushed into the water to drown by none other than her husband Vince.Jasmine immediately threw the blanket away and decided to get off the bed. 22It was a portrait of him with his mother, Sophia Lawson. Kyle was sitting in a luxurious, high-backed, curved, throne-like chair with golden arms and legs. The backrest was also painted in a shimmering golden color while the cushion was velvety and in a deep red color. His dark eyes shone and a leg was crossed over the other. His arms were on the armrest while his mother stood behind the chair, holding the curved edge of the chair. Her face was gleaming with pride. Although the portrait in itself was a masterpiece, what Kyle liked the most about it was the happy smiles on their faces and that they wore black. The portrait made him feel like it was real. Kyle's features were impressively detailed and Sophia also looked young just like he had seen as a child before she left him."This is wonderful. In fact, this is..." Kyle trailed off, his shocked gaze glued to the portrait. "This looks so real. I don't have words to praise it. It's so perfect and..." Kyle raised his eyes.Tania's h
