Alexander’s POV

The man in a fitted charcoal grey blazer over a crisp white shirt and dark jeans. His demeanor calm and composed, turns to the boy beside her and asked, “And what flavor would you like, champ? Today’s your treat, and after this, we’ll get your toy and have some more fun.”

They had to be twins—though not identical, but with a striking resemblance. Such a big family, I thought. The man could pass for their Dad, even though there isn’t any resemblance with him.

I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had seen him before. There’s something familiar about his face, but I can’t quite place it. I keep staring, trying to connect the dots, but my mind is a drawing blanks. I’ve met a lot of people in my life, especially in business, so maybe I’m just confusing him with someone else. If we’ve met before, it must have been at one of those corporate events.

Now we find a seat, directly across from them. Sophia is sitting next to me with her Vanilla ice cream, but my eyes keep drifting

  • Ex-husband’s Regret: Revenge So Sweet    289 Sins of the mothers

Isabel’s POVThe world tilts under my feet as Selene’s words crash through the air.Aria is Vivianne’s and Felix’s daughter. My breath catches.Wait… what? She’s… Cynthia’s step-sister?My thoughts stumble over themselves as shock sinks deeper. Is that why…?Flashes hit me—moments I never gave too much thought to. The sharp, silent glares Aria always threw Cynthia’s way. The way her whole presence changed anytime Cynthia entered the room—tense, coiled, angry. And how easily, how immediately she agreed to fight alongside me to take Cynthia down.So this was the reason all along. It wasn’t just revenge—it was personal. It was blood.Everything makes sense now. The reason Aria worked herself half to death to earn every naira. The secrecy. The refusal to speak about her mother. We found nothing about her past because she hid her mother away, buried her from a world that wanted her gone.I can’t believe what I’m hearing. All this time… all her pain, all her rage, all her silence—it was roo

  • Ex-husband’s Regret: Revenge So Sweet    288 Daughter of the enemy

Aria’s POVThe sound of Selene’s voice gnaws at me, smooth yet venom-laced as she and Victoria argue in the distance. They’re talking about my mother—and I don’t know what infuriates me more… the lies Selene tells so easily, or the fact that Victoria doesn’t know the truth. Not yet.My chest tightens as memories of those nights come rushing back—my mother curled up on the thin mattress, clutching her belly, crying herself to sleep while whispering words of pain she thought I couldn’t hear. Nights when she flinched at every creak in the floorboards, too scared to even dream. Nights I couldn’t forget, no matter how hard I tried.Selene had accused her wrongly—told Felix lies that shattered what little peace my mother had left. And when that didn’t work? She tried to kill her. All because she found out my mom was pregnant with Felix’s child. With me.And now, here Selene is, speaking about betrayal with a wounded pout like she’s the victim. My fists clench at my sides.Betrayal? How dare

  • Ex-husband’s Regret: Revenge So Sweet    287 Family, Fractured

Isabel’s POV“Why are you doing this, Selene?” my mother asks, her voice cracking beneath the weight of emotion. “Why are you after my family? What did I ever do wrong to you?”Selene doesn’t answer. She turns her back slowly, her silence louder than any scream. She takes a step forward, shoulders stiff, like she’s holding something back.“If I’ve ever done anything to hurt you, then come at me directly!” my mother shouts suddenly, her voice louder, more desperate. “You have me now, Selene. Just take me. Let my family go. I’m the one you want. Not them.”“Mom!” I call out, heart thundering. But Selene only turns halfway, eyes cold. “That would be too easy. And where’s the fun in that?”“Fun?” My mother’s voice breaks, baffled. “Is destroying people’s lives fun to you? When did you become like this, Selene?”Selene whirls around. Her voice, when it comes, is sharp, brutal. “Because of you, Victoria. You made me this way.”My mother’s face twists in confusion. “What? Selene, I loved you

  • Ex-husband’s Regret: Revenge So Sweet    286 All plans burn

Isabel’s POVThe door swings open, and I’m shoved inside.I stumble, hitting something—maybe a foot—then crash onto the cold floor, knees slamming into concrete. My breath knocks out of me in a painful grunt. I try to brace myself, but my hands are tied tightly behind my back, wrists already aching from the strain. The blindfold digs into my skin, and every breath I take comes through fabric clamped over my mouth.Muffled sounds escape me as I shake, trying to make sense of the space. There’s nothing. No light. No direction. Only fear clawing its way through my chest. Then I hear it.A voice, shaky and small.“Mom?”My body stills. My blood runs cold. That voice.Cynthia.My chest tightens. My thoughts spiral.Cynthia? What the hell is she doing here? How?What happened? What’s going on?!A sharp, echoing smack cuts through the room. Then a gasp. Followed by—“Mom!”Another slap. The sound snaps through the air.My stomach twists. That voice again—Cynthia. And then it hits me, cold an

Isabel’s POVMy mind races. Fast. Wild. There’s no time to think, only react. So I do the one thing I still can.I speak, my voice hoarse, desperate. “You know, you talk a big game for someone who’s so easily distracted.”That gets her.Selene freezes. Her head slowly turns toward me. “What did you just say?” Her voice is low. Dangerous.I swallow hard. But it worked. I got her attention—at least for now.I force a shrug, pretending to be unaffected. “Yes, Selene. What’s the point of wasting a bullet on him? He’s not even important. Or don’t tell me… you actually get distracted that easily?”A flicker of something—irritation, maybe—dances across her face.“You should be focused on your plan,” I continue, lifting my chin. “And your plan is me, isn’t it? I’m the real prize here. You never know what might happen next.”She chuckles darkly, taking one slow, calculated step after the other toward me. “Unbelievable,” she mutters.I keep my eyes on her, even as my heart slams against my che

Isabel’s POVMy eyes flicker open, slow and heavy, the ceiling above me a dull gray blur. The air smells… musty. Like damp wood and something old rotting beneath it.A shape moves ahead. It takes a second for my vision to sharpen, for the memory to hit me—Travis. The struggle. His hand pulling at the wheel. The fight. The crash. And then—darkness.I try to sit up, but my arms jerk painfully. Rope. Thick. Rough. Digging into my skin.Panic climbs up my throat as I look down. I’m tied to a wooden chair, ankles and wrists bound. The ropes are too tight. My skin already burns from trying. The room is dim, shadows hugging the cracked walls. It smells like wet cement and stale tobacco.“Quit trying, Isabel,” a voice says, smooth and mocking. “Unless you want rope burn and bruises to match.”I freeze. That voice.I lift my eyes and stare into the face of the woman standing by the window, slowly turning to me. Calm. Cold. Amused. It’s her.The resemblance is unmistakable.Selene.Her name lea
