Chapter 7: Rescue

Shelia's POV

The shot missed the fire escape door lock. He switched guns and fired twice more, then kicked the door open. I sighed in relief; none of the shots had hit me. I silently prayed he'd leave me alone and chase Esther.

But he suddenly turned back and asked in broken English, "You know that woman?"

I nodded, then shook my head, replying in Arabic, "She's a hero, a celebrity. Everyone knows her, but I'm not close to her."

"Liar." He yanked me up, "If I can't find her, I'll kill you too."

He tried to drag me along to chase Esther, but my right leg was still bleeding, and without shoes, I cried out in pain from stepping on debris.

"Why are you chasing Esther? I really don't know her well." I gasped.

He ignored me, dragging me like a mop in his frantic pursuit. Any admiration or jealousy I had for Esther was now replaced by hatred.
