Chapter 34

“I’m bored,” I muttered to myself, stretching my legs out on the couch.

Since Jake left in the morning, I had done nothing but drown in my thoughts. The hours dragged on, each one stretching endlessly as I replayed everything I shouldn’t be thinking about.

The room felt empty. Too empty. I wasn’t fond of having Jake around, but without him, there was a strange silence that made the space feel even bigger than it was. I sighed, shaking my head. What am I even thinking?

I threw my head back against the couch, exhaling loudly. Just lying here was tiring. I needed something—anything—to pull me away from this endless cycle of thoughts.

Grabbing my phone, I started scrolling through random pages, but nothing held my interest. Then, something hit me—I hadn’t received any of those cryptic messages lately. I had been so busy that I hadn’t even noticed. My brows furrowed. Maybe the good-for-nothing bastard finally decided to stop messing with me.

I tossed my phone onto the table and

My body ached a little, but I didn’t feel any severe pain.I’m alive.I slowly opened my eyes. At first, I couldn’t see because of the tears that had gathered. I blinked twice, and my vision became clearer. I could see people, and their eyes widened in shock. But something was off. They weren’t looking at me—they were looking beside me.What’s going on?A bad feeling crept into my chest.I turned my head—and saw Jake, lying on the ground, motionless. To make it worse, I saw blood pooling beneath him.“Jake!” I screamed. My whole body was shaking. I couldn’t comprehend what was going on. How did he get here?I pushed myself up and ran toward him. Sweat dripped profusely on my face. I knelt on the floor beside him.“Jake,” I tapped on his chest. “Jake, I beg you, wake up!” He didn’t move. Fear gripped me. I was scared

Chapter 36 Jake’s POV My whole body ached as I opened my eyes. I tried to move, but a sharp pain shot through my ribs, making each breath feel like a battle. The strong scent of antiseptic filled my nose, and somewhere nearby, a machine beeped softly. For a moment, I forgot where I was. I turned my head slightly and saw Andrea. Her hands were resting against her cheeks, supporting her head as she dozed off. Her fingers twitched slightly, probably from exhaustion. She looked pale and drained. “Hmmm.” I let out a low sigh. “Andrea.” Her head snapped up instantly, her eyes widening in panic as she hurried to my side. “You’re awake,” she breathed out, her voice laced with relief as her eyes scanned me. “Yes, I’m awake. How long did I sleep?” I asked, my voice strained. “Umm… four hours.” “That’s a lot of time. And you’ve been here since then?” My brows furrowed as I studied her. She looked exhausted. “Of course, I was. Where else was I supposed to be?” “Andrea, please go back

Chapter 37Andrea pov I stood in front of the luggage, feeling completely lost. I had no idea which of Jake’s clothes to pick. All of them looked expensive and too formal for someone recovering in a hospital. He’d be wearing a hospital gown most of the time anyway but I still needed to pack something comfortable for him. I finally settled on a few pairs of shorts, some shirts, and his pajamas. After carefully folding them, I placed them neatly into the bag I would be taking to the hospital. Next should be his toiletries. I grabbed his toothbrush, razor, deodorant, and a small bottle of shampoo. Arranging them in a small pouch, I added it to the bag. That should be everything.I moved to my own luggage and picked out a pair of jeans, a few tops, and a jacket. I added my toiletries and a pair of flat shoes—I had no idea how long I’d be staying at the hospital, so I needed to be prepared. As I zipped up my bag, a thought hit me.UnderwearI smacked my forehead. • Ex-Husband’s Nemesis   Between doubt and truth

Chapter 38If Jake was right, who would want to do something this cruel and go as far as taking my life? The answer to that question was far from coming. The only enemy I had was Jason, but taking my life was too brutal. Jason was evil, no doubt, but he wouldn’t go that far… would he?After everything he had done to me, I couldn’t vouch for him. Or did my father have any enemies who didn’t want me in the company? But I was in Seattle, which made it even more surprising. Who would fly all the way from New York to Seattle to kill me? If they wanted me dead, they would have done it while I was still in New York—that would have been easier. My mind was spinning. Maybe it was just an accident. Maybe I was overthinking.“I don’t get it,” I murmured, pressing my fingers against my temples.“Understand what?” Jake asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.“Uhmm…” I hadn’t even realized I had spoken so loudly.Jake narrowed his eyes on me. “Andrea, you look worried. Chapter 39It had been two days since I’d been in the hospital with Jake, and I was relieved that he was getting better. The past few days hadn’t been easy, but feeding him, cleaning him up, and assisting him was nothing compared to the pain he was in. Even though he tried to hide it or joke about it, I could see it in his eyes.I glanced at him and noticed how he was lost in thought as he stared out the window.“Are you okay?” I asked. “You’ve been looking outside for a long time. Is something bothering you?”Jake let out a slow sigh. “I can’t stay here anymore.”“Well, you’re not completely healed yet, so we don’t have a choice,” I added“Actually, we do,” he countered. “I can be discharged and finish healing at the hotel. After all, we’re done with business in Seattle, so we can head back to New York.”I blinked. “Wait, hold on—let’s take this one step at a time. Do you want us to go to the hotel or New York?”He exhaled “We can discharge today, go to the hotel, and prepare to lea

Chapter 40Jake pov The ride to the Sinclair estate was quiet. I was still surprised when Andrea’s father asked me to stay with them for a while. I agreed—not because I couldn’t take care of myself, but because I needed Andrea close. I had no doubt that Jason would strike again, and something told me he had a hand in the accident. I needed to keep an eye on her.I glanced at Andrea. She was staring out the window, her fingers tapping restlessly on her lap. Her posture was tense, her expression unreadable. The silence between us wasn’t just comfortable—it was thick, heavy, filled with unspoken words. She wasn’t thrilled about me staying in the house, but she wasn’t fighting it either. I had a feeling she didn't argue because she still felt guilty about the accident. If only she knew—I didn’t blame her at all.The car slowed as we approached the massive Sinclair estate. The towering iron gates opened smoothly, revealing a long, paved driveway lined with trimmed hedges and tall oak tree

Chapter 41Andrea’s POVThe universe had to be playing a trick on me.Every time I tried to put distance between me and Jake, something pulled us back together. I had already spent days with him on the trip, and now we were under the same roof—just a door apart. It felt like a cruel twist of fate.I leaned back against the bed frame, letting out a slow breath as I stared at the ceiling. Maybe I’m just thinking about only myself and not considering Jake.It wasn’t like he had a choice, I reminded myself. None of this was his fault. He was still healing, and I shouldn’t even be complaining about having him around. His injury was because of me.A sharp pang of guilt coiled in my chest. Oh, Andrea. I kicked my foot into the air in frustration. You’re selfish for thinking this way. If his arm wasn’t broken, he wouldn’t even be here. Why was I acting ungrateful? But still… there was something about Jake that made me uneasy. And to make things worse, I still haven’t gotten over the kiss.My

Chapter 42The morning came too soon. I lay on my bed, squeezing my eyes shut. I didn’t feel like getting up today. I buried my face in the pillow thinking about how I could avoid Jake this morning. I knew the moment I stepped out, I would see him. And he was the last person I needed to see right now. Last night’s memory was still fresh in my mind—how was I supposed to look him in the eyes after he had seen me half-naked?“Oh Andrea, I didn’t see anything, if it makes you feel better.” Those were his words last night. Lies. I knew he saw me, so there was no way I would feel better.“Ugh!” I hit my legs against the bed. Should I just pretend I’m sick? No, that would make my parents worried, and Jake would see right through it. He would just tease me about it. So what can I do?My stomach growled a sharp reminder that I had skipped dinner last night. If I skipped breakfast too, my mother would surely ask questions, and I didn’t want them to know about this whole drama with Jake.I grum

I opened my eyes wider, but everything still looked blurry.“Shit,” I muttered, rubbing my eyes until my vision cleared. I looked around the room.Claire wasn’t there.Where did she go this early?I swung my legs off the bed and stood up, only to stumble, catching the edge of the nightstand to steady myself.I needed some water. My mouth was dry, and I could still taste the whiskey from last night.Just as I was about to call out for someone, the door creaked open.Claire walked in, with a maid holding a bowl and a jar of water.“Good morning, sir,” the maid greeted.I ignored.“You can hand it over to me,” Claire said to the maid. Jason needs to know what just happened.I grabbed my phone from the table, my fingers moving fast. The screen lit up—Jason’s name glaring back at me. I tapped the call button and pressed the phone to my ear. It only rang twice.“Hello Claire ““Jason, Andrea saw you leaving the boutique,” I said immediately.“Huh?” He sounded nervous, caught off guard. “She saw me?”“She saw you walking out of the boutique,” I repeated, pacing the floor.“I heard you the first time, Claire. Did she… Did she suspect anything? Did she question you?”“Of course, she did. Do you think Andrea would see you walking out of my boutique and turn a blind eye? She asked what you were doing there.”“W

Chapter 83I sat in the car, still trying to make sense of what had just happened. Claire and Jason can’t stand each other—that was one thing I was very much aware of. They were like cats and rats, so the question popped into my head again: Why was Jason walking out of Claire’s boutique?I shifted in my seat, chewing the inside of my cheek. My head was spinning with questions I couldn’t answer. The more I thought about it, the more restless I felt.Sitting here wasn’t going to give me answers. I opened the door and started walking down to the boutique. The receptionist welcomed me with a smile when I got in.“Good afternoon, ma. Welcome to Claire’s.”I returned a polite nod. “Hi, I’m here to see Claire.”“One moment, please.”She picked up the phone, I could tell by the way she looked at me that she recognized me.I waited, arms crossed, eyes drifting toward the hallway. That was just… step one.”I sat up straighter, my eyes narrowing. “What do you mean by step one?”Jake shrugged, a grin tugging at the corner of his lips. “That press conference? That was me killing two birds with one stone. Your name’s cleared. The public believes you. But as for Jason… this is far from over.”“You already gave him the file,” I said slowly, suspicion creeping into my voice. “So what else is left?”He turned to face me more fully, his expression unreadable, eyes sharp. “Did I?” he asked.I let out a frustrated breath, throwing my hands up. “Can you please just stop answering my questions with another question, Jake? You have something up your sleeves. I can feel it.”He chuckled and lifted both arms, rolling up his sleeves dramatically. “I’ve got nothing under my sleeves, Andrea.”“Jake…”

Chapter 81Andrea’s POVI nearly choked on my coffee when Jason’s face popped up on my screen. He looked expressionless . Cold. Like he was reading a script straight off the teleprompter with no soul behind it.But I knew better.Beneath that polished suit and deadpan expression, I could see the cracks. The stiffness in his shoulders. The way his eyes avoided the cameras. He looked like a man holding his breath underwater—desperate not to drown, trying to make it seem like this was all under control. It wasn’t.He was miserable, and he felt like a damn loser for standing up there. I could see it in the way his jaw twitched after every sentence like he had to force the words out without spitting. He didn’t want to do this. This wasn’t some noble act of redemption. He didn’t have a choice. And the way he was acting—like he was one broken, lonely ex-husband who had no choice but to drag my name because of how pained and heartbroken he was? So pathetic. Some things never change. Even now,

Chapter 80 Jason’s POV I stood in front of the mirror, tying the knot for the third damn time. No matter how tight I pulled it or how clean the fold looked, it still didn’t sit right on my chest. My hands paused. I stared at my reflection—sharp suit, clean shave, everything in place—but I still looked like hell. I looked like a man about to step into a war he already lost. “Jason?” Claire’s voice floated in behind me. I didn’t turn. She walked in, her heels clicking against the marble floor. I caught her reflection beside mine—flawless, hair pinned up, makeup soft and polished. She wore a cream-colored dress that hugged her in all the right places. “You look tense,” she said gently, wrapping her arms around my waist from behind. “Everything’s going to be fine.” I didn’t say anything. My eyes were locked on the tie, my knuckles clenched around the fabric. “Jason,” she said again, a little firmer this time. “You’ve got this. Just go in, say what you planned, and walk out. You’r

Every time I closed my eyes, I could feel it again—his fingers digging in, the panic clawing up my throat, the way my legs gave out under me. My heart wouldn’t slow down. My chest still felt tight, like I hadn’t fully caught my breath since.Though he had apologized and promised it would never happen again, could I count on his words? I had never seen him like this before—not toward me. For the first time since we became an item, I was scared. I was terrified of him.I shifted slightly, careful not to wake him. I grabbed the edge of the dresser and yanked it, dragging it a few inches before slamming it back against the wall, I needed something else to hit. Something else to throw.
