"What did you tell him?" Lance asked, trying to calm down. He took a sip of his water, but made a face and set it back on the table. "After he told you to 'play nice.'"

"I told him that I would slap any man who deserves it, including him," I replied, taking a sip of my water, as well.

"Good girl," he said as a smile spread across his face.

I lifted an eyebrow, questioning.

He shrugged. "I deserved it," he replied, holding my hand a bit tighter, forcing me to look into his eyes. His hands were cold, but I pretended not to notice. "You should feel free to slap any man who deserves it including me."

I smiled, suddenly feeling awkward when the waiter approached to take our order. "Good evening," he said, and then proceeded to tell us the dinner specials and his recommendations.

Lance nodded to me.

"I'll have the Shrimp Alfredo and a glass of wine," I ordered.

"I'll have the same and we'll have a bottle of Dom Perignon," he said, lifting an eyebrow to me, asking me silently if it was okay. I nodded. He had just ordered Dom Perignon and he asked me if it was okay? I liked him already, but I forced the thought aside.

"So, what do you do for a living?" I asked, suddenly wanting to know how he could afford to spend such lavish money at what had started out to be just a simple dinner for two.

"Do you really want to know?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Of course," I said, taking a sip of water to hide my amusement.

He took a deep breath. "I own Caprice Casino, on the strip."

"Oh," I said for lack of anything better to say. I set down the glass. "I've heard of it, but I've never been there before."

"Well, then, you'll have to come with me some time."

Yes, I would love to come with you some time, I thought, and then pushed the obscene thought aside, unable to believe that my thoughts had just betrayed me like that. I was sure that his thoughts were innocent, at least for the moment.

Suddenly, the waiter approached and showed Lance the bottle. He nodded, so the waiter popped the cork and was about to pour, but Lance reached for the bottle. The waiter handed it to Lance and left with a nod instead.

"So, tell me about yourself," he said, changing the subject, clearing the air of the awkward silence as he poured the wine into our glasses.

"What would you like to know?" I asked, taking a sip of the wine. Delicious. Almost as delicious as the person sitting across from me.

"Where did you grow up, go to school, college?" Lance began, smiling. "Basic stuff."

"Are you sure you want to know?" I asked.

"Sure. Why not?"

"Well, I grew up here in Las Vegas, I went to medical school, then came back." I don't know why I was telling him my life story, but something about him made me want to.

"Where did you go to medical school?"

"Harvard."

Lance looked impressed. "Why did you come back here?"

I took a deep breath. "I wanted to make a difference."

"Why here?"

"Las Vegas is my hometown. I want to give back." I shrugged.

The waiter brought our orders and offered to pour us more wine, but Lance waved him off and poured it himself. Soon, we were digging in to our delicious food.

"Where did you go to school?" I asked, stabbing a shrimp.

"Cambridge," he said then added, "but it was a long time ago."

"In England?"

He nodded.

"Where in England are you from?"

"A small town." He was evading the subject and I knew it.

"Where?" I wasn't going to let him off the hook that easily.

"Preston Village in Brighton," he replied, and I nodded. "Are you familiar with it?"

"I know where it is, but I've never been there before," I replied between bites.

"Would you like to go?"

I suddenly froze, a bit uncomfortable with where this conversation was going. "I really must go " I replied, pushing my seat back. I had the feeling that, knowing Lance, we would be on a plane tomorrow if I agreed.

"Sorry, I've made you uncomfortable," he said, placing his hand over mine as he looked into my eyes.

I took a deep breath and pulled up my chair, but made no effort to leave.

"What's troubling you?"

"You."

"Me?" he asked, and then he looked into my eyes. "I think it's a bit more than me."

"I shouldn't be here "

"Then, why are you?"

I took a deep breath and leaned back against the chair, looking away. Then, I turned my attention back to him. "I don't know."

"Let's not try to figure this out now. Let's just enjoy the evening," he said, then patted my hand. "Would you like some more wine?" He reached for the bottle.

"You're spoiling me," I teased, nodding.

A sudden gleam filled his eyes as his lips curled into a smile. "That's the whole idea."

I cleared my throat as my heart jumped. "Well, thank you for the wonderful meal, but I really must go."

"Do you have to?" Lance asked, placing a hand gently over mine. "Please, stay."

"Lance, I'm married."

"I know," he said, popping a shrimp into his mouth as he smiled. "Please, forgive me, but I'm enjoying your company."

"Why?"

"What do you mean?" he asked, confused.

"Well, surely there are lots of other women who would enjoy your company as well."

"But would I enjoy their company as much as I enjoy yours?" he asked, suddenly serious.

I gulped down my wine, hoping to steady my heart. "I really must go. It's getting late." I looked out the window and it was completely dark outside.

"Wait," Lance said, rising from his seat as he motioned for the waiter. "Let me take care of this and I'll walk you out."

"That won't be necessary "

"Do I have to throw you over my shoulder again?" he asked, grinning as if he would enjoy it a bit too much.

I laughed at the image of him throwing me over his shoulder here in this nice restaurant. "Let me just go powder my nose."

"I'll be here," he said, reaching for his wallet.

I walked into the restroom and did what I had to do, and then looked in the mirror. I pulled a brush from my purse and ran it through my long waves, then splashed water on my face. "What are you doing?" I asked myself as I looked in the mirror at my rosy cheeks and bright blue eyes. I tried to convince myself that I was just spending a nice evening with a friend, but my heart told me that it was much more than that.

When I came out, Lance was waiting with his hands in the pockets of his jeans, looking like a supermodel at a photo shoot. "Ready?" he asked casually, reaching for me.

I nodded, but walked ahead of him, not taking his hand. He followed close behind, placing a guiding hand on the small of my back. One thing that I loved about Lance was his sense of chivalry. He was old school and I loved that about him, but I quickly pushed the thought aside.

"Well, here we are," I said, retrieving the keys from my purse.

"Here we are," Lance repeated. "May I follow you home?" When I raised an eyebrow, he was quick to add, "Just to make sure you get home safely, of course."

I smiled, lowering my eyes. "No, I'll be fine, but thanks," I said, after an awkward moment.

"Leila?" he asked, his voice husky.

"Yes?"

"Don't slap me, but may I kiss you?"

"I'll see you later " I said with a smile as I turned to walk away, but he pulled me to his chest and crushed his lips down onto mine.

I struggled for a moment beneath his grasp, but then I melted into his arms as his lips moved with mine, leaving me breathless. After a moment, I stopped fighting and parted my lips for him, taking him inside. He kissed me with all the pent up passion and emotion that we had both been feeling, all heat and pleasure. He kissed down my neck and inhaled deeply, then trailed back up to my lips, pressing firmly to mine, moving sensually and in ways that I had never experienced before. When he pulled back, I was lightheaded, breathless.

"I'll see you later," I repeated.

"Until then," he said, and then he placed his hands on both of my cheeks, looked deeply into my eyes, and gave me one last sweet kiss before he disappeared into the darkness of the night.

I drove home in the dark, trying to steady my heart. What am I doing? I wondered as I pointed my car toward home. I had so much on my mind that it practically drove itself home. I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. What the hell am I doing? But there was something about Lance that I just couldn't describe. Besides his incredible good looks, there was something else about him I felt secure, treasured like a princess around him. It was as if he had already placed me on a pedestal, treating me like royalty. I had never been treated like that before, and I knew that I could easily get used to it. When I got home, Steven was gone. Obviously, he had already left for work-if he even came home at all-even though it was Saturday. I should be off from work the next day, but I really had no desire to have a confrontation with Steven, even though I knew that we needed to talk soon.I took a deep breath to steady myself, pulled the car into the garage, and walked into the house. "I'm taking a break," I told Rosa after the family left."Why don't you go home?" Rosa asked, knowing how hard I had worked to try to save him and she had worked just as hard by my side. We made a good team. "No, not yet," I said, dead on my feet. "I just need a break and maybe some coffee.""And some food," Rosa added, picking up a chart. "Eat something.""Yes, Ma'am," I teased, walking away as she scowled. I walked into the waiting room before walking to the cafeteria to see how many more patients that we had and my breath caught. Lance was sitting on a chair, casually reading a magazine. For a moment, I almost walked the other way, but something inside me pulled me to him. My heart beat erratically within my chest as I approached, noticing how handsome he was. The air of confidence about him almost reminded me of a medieval knight, but I quickly brushed the thought aside. As I walked closer, trying to maintain my composure, his gray jacket was open, revealing the tight, bulgi

When we were walking down the hallway and safely out of earshot, I said, "You were amazing. Did you see the way that she came alive when you spoke to her in her own language? I haven't see her this excited since she came here."Lance's face fell and his expression suddenly turned serious. "How long has she been here?""For two months now." I looked down at the linoleum floor and sighed. "She's no longer responding to treatment."Lance nodded. "I didn't think so," he said, and then he turned his attention to the hallway ahead of us as his eyebrows pulled together. "How much time does she have?"I let out an exasperated breath. "I can't be sure. That's one thing that I don't like about being a doctor. I wish I could save all of my patients, especially ones like her, young with her whole life ahead of her," I said, as we walked toward the cafeteria. "Thank you for what you did for her."Lance nodded. "I was happy to do it," he replied, forcing a smile, and then turned his attention t

The next morning, I hurried downstairs, in a rush to get to work to see him, poured myself a cup of coffee, and darted out the door, headed toward work.I pulled into the parking lot as thoughts of Lance filled my mind, conflicted about what to do. There weren't many men like him anymore with his chivalry and kindness. I loved watching him with Crissy last night and I was sure that he would make good on his promise to visit her again. I took a deep breath, pushed the images of Lance from my mind, and headed into the hospital."Morning," I said as I passed the receptionist. She nodded cheerfully, then turned her attention to a patient who was checking in, one I was sure I'd see later. After depositing my purse in my locker and donning a lab coat and my stethoscope, I headed out to the floor, but Drake called out to me when he saw me come in. "Dr. Reynolds, I'd like for you to follow me please." He walked down a corridor, expecting me to follow, without saying another word.Oh, shi

The rest of the day passed uneventfully until sundown, but I couldn't help but wonder about Crissy and what role Lance had played, if any, in her recovery. As I promised Drake, I had said nothing about it to anyone. Drake kept watching me throughout the day, frowning as he passed, but I brushed it off and focused on my work. He was always upset about something. Throughout the day, I couldn't help but think of Lance and how he had connected with Crissy. It's impossible that he had anything to do with her recovery, isn't it? But Drake's reaction made me wonder how Lance could have been involved. I pushed the thought aside and went back to working with patients.I headed toward the waiting room to see how many patients were waiting, when I spotted Lance, sitting in a far corner of the room. My heart involuntarily leapt when I saw him, and then took in his magnificent features, his firm chin, his dark brown hair, high cheekbones and stunning green yes. Well, it was obvious that I wasn't going to get any answers from him tonight, so I picked up my fork and cut a piece of my steak. I was suddenly so hungry that I could have just picked it up and eaten it with my bare hands if Lance hadn't been there. I laughed at the thought.Lance leaned back and gave me a sly grin as he cut another bite of his steak. "May I ask you a personal question?"The look in his eyes was so sweet that I couldn't help but smile. "It depends upon the question.""How do you like to be fucked?" His question was anything but innocent. My mouth fell open and I almost choked on my steak, shocked as I leaned back a bit. "Excuse me?"Then, he looked at me through his lashes and said in a low voice, "Perhaps you didn't hear me correctly. How, my dear, do you like to be fucked?"My breath quickened, shocked by the question as I remembered both times that I'd kissed him and how I had come undone in his arms. This was the turning point, slamming into me hard. "Lance,

"Well, I don't believe it," Rosa said loudly, stopping me as she crossed her arms. "It's not midnight yet and you're leaving already. Good for you!" "Yeah, well, I have to get home," I lied, in a hurry to see if Lance was waiting outside as promised."Have a good night," she called to me over her shoulder, walking toward an examining room.Hearing his voice in my head-speaking of fucking me-I rushed past the girls at the front desk, through the automatic glass doors, and into the parking lot. I would deal with the consequences later.Outside, it was dark. Only the light streaming down from the streetlamp hovering over the parking lot made seeing possible, casting eerie shadows over the black pavement. The sound of a lone siren screamed in the distance, but it quickly faded. I jumped at a rustle along the pavement, but took a breath, relieved when I saw that it was only a stray wrapper blowing across the asphalt, creating a scraping sound. My heard pounded in my chest as an uneasy

In the moonlight, my eyes adjusted and I was able to see him clearly. His gorgeous eyes bore into mine as if he were looking into my soul. Mesmerized by the sheer force of his will, I took a step back and relaxed, letting my hand trail across the exquisite curves of his chest under his white shirt. His body was rock hard. It was as if a model of the statue David was standing before me in all his perfection, in all his glory. In an instant, Lance's hands were steel vises upon my wrists and his eyes flared a brilliant green, almost glowing in the darkness of the night. "What the hell?" I gasped, unable to move, unable to run, unsure if I wanted to.Within the blink of an eye, he turned my back toward his chest. I gasped when he suddenly flung my long blonde hair over my shoulder, exposing the tender flesh of my neck. A moment later, his lips were on my neck, kissing me roughly. Leila reached over and took her from me. "Well, Amy and Angela went through a lot of trouble to organize a surprise anniversary party for us, so you'd better not disappoint them and look surprised."In the last several months since The Outsiders attacked and Leila was turned into a vampire, the cure had been perfected and several vampires were turned successfully back into humans. We had to set up a secret relocation program for them, as well, as they would no longer be able to protect themselves from supernatural creatures. Many of the innocent Outsiders were also turned into humans again, successfully. Once they had the cure, their bodies reverted back to their human form, to our relief. Also, Drake had built a private facility just for vampires going through The Change, headed by Amy and Elias. They both would be busy for a long time.I raised my eyebrows and opened my mouth, over exaggerating mock shock. "How's this?""Silly Daddy!" Sirena said as she laid her head on her mothe

"It wasn't your fault.""Yes, it was!" I said, as tears ran down my cheeks. "I should have protected you. I should have been there for you!""Shush," she said, then smiled. "You were." I looked at her, puzzled. "You were with me in my heart. Before I died, you were the last thing I thought of; your face was the last thing I saw in my mind. I love you, Lance.""I love you, too," I cooed, "always and forever."Suddenly, the noise behind us began to die down. I helped Leila to her feet. "Leila?!" I yelled at the top of my lungs as the screams of dying vampires resonated within the cave behind me. I closed my eyes for a moment and then silently prayed. "Please, help me to find them."I opened my eyes. As I looked at the caves, the one in the center of the humongous cavern stood out. I ran down the narrow path, throwing vampires over my head behind me as I ran, letting my coven tear them apart, and killed several at once, taking their heads off easily with my sword. I threw several against the wall with a wave of my hand, who were ripped apart by shifters. Then, I shoved my hand into the chest of another vampire with milky white eyes when he got too close and listened to his screams as he burst into flames. I jumped over his flaming body when I saw a faint light at the end of the tunnel, running my sword through another vampire that was coming at me. As he lay on the ground, I stomped on his throat and ripped his head from his body. As I rushed down the tunnel toward t

We ran over the rough terrain as the wind blew past us. The sun was high overhead, but the heat didn't affect vampires the way it affected humans. None of the elements did. We ran over mountains and even jumped over a gorge, not losing one vampire. Within minutes, the sound of running water rushing by filled my ears and I knew we were getting close. Soon, the black and red mountain peaks rose up before us. Within minutes, we were on the edge of Promontory Point, on the west side of the Hoover Dam.I looked down at the blue lake and at all of the surrounding igneous rock formations that created mountains, just as Xander came up on my right side. "She could be anywhere."Xander clasped a hand on my shoulder. "We'll find her." Then, he turned to his wolf pack, who had joined us. "Split up! Look for any sign of Leila and the baby!" The scent grew stronger, more delicious, more tempting as I drew near and it was clearly, fully human. I placed my hands on the wall, beyond all reason, beyond sanity, as I inched closer to my target. I turned the corner, ready, as saliva rushed into my mouth in anticipation of the meal in which I was about to indulge.
