Chapter 2

Author: Asarum
Not long after, Andres rushed home, looking travel-worn.

Camellia wobbled slightly when she stood up—perhaps because she had not eaten all day—but Andres firmly caught her.

"You didn't eat properly again today, did you?" he asked, his eyes full of concern as he gently scooped her into his arms.

As they drew close, the sweet, cloying scent of fruit filled the air.

Camellia never used perfume, so it was obvious who the scent belonged to.

"What are you thinking, baby?" Andres teased while tapping her nose affectionately.

Camellia's sharp eyes caught a faint red lipstick stain on his finger.

On the second day of their marriage, Andres had secretly tattooed a camellia on his ring finger.

He had told her that the ring finger had a blood vessel that led directly to the heart. This was a symbol of their shared bond and how she would always be connected to his heart, but that spot now bore a mark that did not belong to her.

A dull pain rose in her chest. It was heavy and piercing, like a sharp blade chiseling away bit by bit.

"Are you starving yourself so much you've lost your braincells?" Andres joked, kissing her forehead lightly before asking Eva Longford to serve the food that had been kept warm for dinner.

Andres used to cook for her himself every day. However, some time into their marriage, his work grew busier, and the task naturally passed to the housekeeper.

"Let me join you for dinner, okay? Skipping meals can really mess up your stomach," he said while carefully setting her down on a dining chair and placing the utensils by her hand.

Then, he washed his hands and began peeling apples for her.

"Okay," Camellia murmured, swallowing the bitterness in her heart and eating the food he placed on her plate in small bites.

They had not been eating for long when Andres' phone began ringing incessantly.

He glanced at the caller ID and frowned slightly before wiping his hands and stepping aside to take the call.

When he returned, his expression was frantic.

"Cam, something came up at the studio. I have to go handle it. Don't wait up for me tonight. You should go to bed early."

He grabbed the antiques he had bought earlier. He promised to get her something even better another day and left in a rush.

Once the meal was completely cold, Camellia finally stood up and went upstairs.

As soon as she lay down, she scrolled through Valentina's latest post on social media.

[I only had a low fever, but my boyfriend insisted on taking care of me. He even made me a table full of delicious food. Do you know how special a meal made for you by a loved one is?]

The accompanying picture showed a close-up of a man in an apron cutting vegetables.

As a rising name in the art world, Valentina had tens of thousands of followers on her account. The post caused a stir among her fans.

[So this is the senior of hers with a nine-figure insurance policy on his right hand that Val mentioned!]

[Where can I find a man like this? Can the government issue one to everyone, please?]

Camellia stared at the hands in the photo and thought of Andres' promises. Her heart felt like it was being torn apart, leaving it shattered and unrecognizable.

[That's nothing! Our Mr. Gardner is the gold standard for a devoted husband!]

Someone had uploaded a video of the auction from earlier that day, and the buzz quickly overtook Valentina's post.

[Damn, he really spoils his wife! $400 million! That's enough to buy my entire life hundreds of times over!]

[Oh my God! Has anyone not been overwhelmed by Mr. Gardner's love for his wife yet? When his wife had a car accident and was scared, he risked his life to make sure he was the first person she saw when she woke up!]

[Mr. Gardner is like a saint in our elite circle. He still wears the rosary beads Camellia gave him, perfectly polished from years of use. He never takes them off!]

Valentina's fans went quiet under the video. Compared to Andres' public displays of devotion, a single meal could not measure up. However, a newly-registered user suddenly posted three photos.

One showed the transfer of ownership for an Aurelia winery, another depicted a necklace worth $200 million called ‘The Heart of the Ocean’, and the last featured Valentina holding car keys while sitting on the hood of a Ferrari.

The user captioned it: [If someone else has it, our Val can't be without it.]

Fans exploded in praise, calling her senior powerful and declaring him on par with Andres.

Just then, a text message from an unsaved number came through to Camellia's phone.

"You absolutely can't miss the celebration my senior is throwing for me tomorrow night!"

Though she did not say anything, Camellia could almost hear Valentina's smugness.

The message ended with the address of the venue.

742, Ocean Middle Road, Camellia Street.

It was the restaurant where Camellia and Andres had their first meal together. He had promised her it would always remain closed to the public, so it would belong only to the two of them.

Camellia stared at the address until her eyes stung. Her hand slipped, and the phone dropped onto her face.

The sharp pain from the impact pushed her over the edge, and the tears she had been holding back spilled silently into the darkness.

The following day, Andres did not leave the house early like he usually did.He squeezed toothpaste onto Camellia's toothbrush and stood by, watching as she finished washing her face."It's extremely windy today. The phone slipped from Andres' hand, and he collapsed to the ground as though all the strength had been drained from his body. The voice on the other end of the line kept saying, "Hello? Hello?"Andres did not seem to hear it. He frantically replayed the video on Cohen's phone over and over again."This isn't possible. It can't be Cam. It's not her…"Cohen's expression was tense, and he simply grabbed Andres and pulled him toward the car.The Lamborghini roared to life as the accelerator was slammed. The pair sped through countless red lights and finally arrived at Eterna Haven."Mr. Gardner, our condolences," someone said solemnly. The words seemed to ignite something in Andres. He broke free from Cohen's grip and swung a fist at the man's face."How dare you curse my Cam! She's not dead! My Cam isn't dead! Andres felt an instant headache coming on.He never expected Valentina to have enough influence to convince Camellia's father, Cairo Shaw, to intervene and save her.Watching Andres' darkened expression, Valentina laughed hysterically. "Andres, do you really think you can get rid of me? Let me tell you this—that's never going to happen in this lifetime!"Ignoring her outburst, Andres turned and rushed out, heading straight home.Shortly after he left, Valentina was taken into custody under the pretext of being a threat to others due to her mental instability. She was sent to 600, Willford, South Road, Saltsburg's most renowned psychiatric hospital. It was the same facility where her sister Nelina's attending physician had worked, and now, he was Valentina's new doctor.Andres did not even wait for the car to come to a full stop before storming into the house. In the living room, Cairo and Andres' father, Matthew Gardner, were laughing heartily about something, clearly enjoying t

Camellia was stunned. She had not expected Dante to have any connection to her stunt.Seeing her so surprised that she was at a loss for words, Dante decided to stop teasing her."After all these years of knowing you, it was only natural for me to help with something like this," he said casually.A strange emotion welled up in Camellia's heart as she looked up to study the man in front of her.Dante still exuded the same refined elegance, but his features carried an added maturity and steadiness.Beneath the gold-rimmed glasses, his eyes seemed capable of seeing through to the deepest corners of her soul."Thank you," Camellia said stiffly. Her words felt too formal, especially when Dante's warm smile met her gaze. It seemed inadequate."Let me treat you to dinner tonight," she blurted out.The moment the words left her mouth, she regretted them. They were not close enough for this sort of gesture, and yet being around Dante always made her feel unsettled for reasons she could

The aftermath of their abstinence breaking in such an overwhelming way taught Camellia a painful lesson—never underestimate the stamina of a man like Dante. Her aching limbs and trembling legs were evidence enough."You provoked me first," Dante said smugly, pulling Camellia back into bed as she tried to sneak away.Wrapping an arm possessively around her waist, he effortlessly brought her back into his embrace, and the two found themselves entwined once more. After breaking down the invisible barrier between them, Dante seemed to transform into an entirely different person. The once gentle, composed, and scholarly man had vanished, replaced by someone clingy, domineering, and unapologetically intense.Even Ellis could not help but complain, grumbling that Dante now had a wife and no longer cared about his father. However, Ellis was not wrong. Dante's arms instinctively encircled Camellia, and their gazes locked as she looked up. The air between them grew heavy with unspoken tension, and even their breaths seemed to heat the space. After a long pause, Dante lowered his head, and his chin brushed lightly against her hair.He simply held her, saying nothing, but his silence spoke volumes.Camellia's eyes flickered with an unidentifiable emotion. Ever since they had gotten together, apart from the one kiss Dante had given her when she first confessed, their relationship had lacked further intimacy. They were closer than friends but had not yet reached the depth of a truly intimate couple. She recalled the last time she had gone home to retrieve fresh clothes for him. Upon returning to the hospital, she overheard a heated argument between Dante and Ellis. She had not caught much of their conversation but could sense that the fight revolved around her. Andres's eyes turned red instantly. His heart felt like it was being sliced apart and torn into shreds. He wanted nothing more than to storm into the room, shout that it was not allowed, and take Camellia away forcefully. He would hide her up for a lifetime if necessary.Nevertheless, he could not. He could not bear for Cam to hate him even more. She only said she wanted to be with Dante, not marry him. Maybe she was acting out of guilt or gratitude. Perhaps she did not even love Dante at all.Yes, that had to be it—Camellia surely did not love him.Convincing himself of this, Andres asked the caretaker to wheel him back to his room. He needed to figure out how to win back her forgiveness and, eventually, her heart.Inside the room, Dante's mind went blank. He had not expected Camellia to confess to him at such a moment. At first, a wave of immense joy surged through him, but he slowly withdrew his hand as reason returned."Cam, you don't have to—""No." Camellia cut him off f

When Andres heard Camellia's decision, it felt as if something had pierced straight through his heart, leaving him on the brink of losing consciousness from the pain.Nevertheless, he did not blame her for her decision. After all, he was the one who wronged her first. He had no right to expect her to prioritize him again.Tears slipped silently from the corners of his eyes. A fleeting, almost maddened thought crossed his mind: why had the boulder not just killed him outright?Perhaps if it had, Camellia would never be able to forget him for the rest of her life. The boulder was quickly moved, but for Camellia, those few minutes felt like an eternity.Though Dante was gravely injured, he mustered the strength to force a faint smile at Camellia."Don't worry," he whispered.Camellia's eyes widened in alarm as she noticed a tear in Dante's shirt, revealing a deep wound on his chest that blood flowed out of relentlessly. Her gaze darted to the sharpest edge of the boulder, stained

Holding firm to her belief that as long as she did not feel awkward, it would not directly affect her, Camellia quickly averted her gaze and focused on the burial artifacts before her.The most striking piece was a tall greenish-white porcelain soul jar that was over three feet tall. Its top featured a crane, the neck encircled by a coiled cloud dragon, with twelve figurines standing below the dragon.Camellia's eyes lit up with excitement, convinced that this trip was more than worth it.She chattered enthusiastically with Dante, speculating about the era these burial items might belong to and the identity of the tomb's owner.Dante watched her animated expressions with a gentle smile in his eyes, nodding occasionally as she spoke. Before long, the rain began to intensify.Glancing at the darkening sky, Russell urged everyone to hurry back, warning that the mountain path could become treacherous if they delayed. The archaeological team quickly packed up and started their descen
