(Karis's pov) I could not get the fact that Antonio was poisoned out my head. Who wanted him dead? The De Marco family had a lot of enemies but I was sensing a greater scheme. "Focus Karis."I tapped my cheeks to snap out of my thoughts. I was going through my designs one last time to check everything was perfect before emailing the sketches to Sapphire. I have been on this like forever. The basic designs were done with just some colouring here and there. This design had to be finished ASAP because tomorrow was going to be a big day; not only was I going to visit My father in law in the hospital, whose condition has been improving although he is still unconscious, but Bertha's surgery was tomorrow too. When I asked that daredevil about the present she gave me, all she did was just laugh it out like it was some type of joke. It's been a month now since I got married to Xander, and we still had a month or less before the divorce. I am even planning on speaking to him
91 (Xander's pov) Speaking of unwanted visitors, that was exactly what knocked on my doorstep today. After Dad's poisoning incident, I started to investigate, of course, not with the police since it was unknown who planned the poisoning incident and if they had influence in the police. Due to the investigation, I informed a couple of old friends, Ivan, Kyle and Benji, due to their influence. We planned to meet up at one of Ivan's clubs to talk things over after Benji arrived in the country, but all of a sudden, these assholes decided to use my home as the meeting point. I was not a good person in quote so none of my friends were considered saints. The last thing I wanted was for them to be close to Karis. The world was too wicked for my naive wife, and at times, I wish I could create a bubble to keep her safe but Karis just wanted to defend herself and kept throwing herself to the devil. I don't know what's the deal she has with Skyler, but one thing for sure, associat
(Xander's pov) My hand was still bleeding but the pain was nothing compared to what I had felt before. The music piece was happy, but for me, all it did was bring back memories of Alessia. Coincidentally, this was also Alessia's favourite piece. Whenever she was free, she would play it over and over again. Then, the piano was placed close to the grand stairs facing the back door. It was after her death it was moved here. I hated the sound of the piano because all it did was bring back memories of guilt. I could never forgive myself for what happened to Alessia, and hearing such fine play was tucking my heart strings, reminding me that if what happened never occurred, Alessia would have been the one playing. "It's Alessia's piece. I thought you got rid of the piano."Ivan muttered it probably brought back memories for him. "I kept it out of sight and reach; that was what I thought." I snarled. My eyes glanced at the pile of cards that had been stained by blood.
(Karis's pov) "I look forward to that, but unfortunately, we have guests to attend to now. The punishment will be later." There was this menacing presence around him that made me scared to my bones. He was terrifying. Xander leaned forward and the aura around him calmed down a bit, but his eyes were still cold. His reaction to me touching the piano was so adverse. Despite the danger that rang around me and how serious Xander was, I was super excited and anticipating what he planned to do. My head was screaming and warning me of the danger but yet my body was intrigued. That was how fucked up Xander made me. "You don't scare me." I spat at him. My eyes were shooting daggers at him. His eyes were still cold despite the fact he was smiling. "If you are not scared, then why are you shaking like a bunny? All you can do is glare at me but it's cool as long as your eyes are on me. You just can't resist looking at me." He was annoying, his level of narcissism was beyond
(Karis's pov) I was not the only one who found this side of Xander weird; I could see the surprise on his friend's face. "I never thought I would see this side of Xander, love makes people change." Ivan teased with his green eyes sparkling with mischief. Benjamin let out a short chuckle in response. Kyle was rigid as ever, but it still made me feel a bit off. My cheeks started to burn hot, and I tried my best not to look too much. The new steak didn't take long for it to arrive. Xander was taking his time to play the attentive lover to the peak. He was so caring to even help me cut my steak into smaller pieces, while still conversing with his friends. Meeting Xander's friends was not as nerve-wracking as expected due to Xander's earlier warning they were mindful of their words. After Xander was done cutting the steak I was expecting him to slide the plate to me. The next thing he did was pick up a piece of meat to feed me in front of his friend. I bit my lips as my ner
(Karis's pov) I could not talk to Bertha after the surgery because she fell unconscious after it was done from exhaustion. Since it was expected she would be unconscious for almost a day, I just got her some flowers and a get-well card which I placed by her bed to show I was there. A sigh left my lips as I gave her a last glance before leaving her room. Skyler was waiting for me outside because he felt I needed my privacy. He was very considerate in everything. "Have you thought about what I told you?" He suddenly asked leaving puzzled. "What are you talking about? I am kind of lost?" I wracked my brains trying to figure out what he was talking about. "I heard from a little birdie you told your dear hubby I am your lover. You didn't accept my offer but you are always using my name to your advantage." My heartbeat plunged to my stomach. How did he find out about that? Skyler had an amused look as he observed my expression. "You are cute when you try to hide your
(Karis's pov) I was confused by Skyler's words, but one thing I have learnt about men from my husband is that you shouldn't stretch your brains to understand them. My mood was instantly lifted by that thought as a bright smile hung on my lips. Today was a great day. Sapphire praised my designs, and Bertha's operation was a success. The only thing left was for my divorce to be completed. I grabbed my drink, bringing it to my lips to enjoy the flavour that wrapped around my tongue. I planned on going back to the hospital later, and then I needed to talk to Xander concerning our divorce proceeding. Time was running fast, and two months were over halfway through. I couldn't wait for my freedom. My smile fell when I heard an annoying laughter from my side. I didn't need to turn to know who it was. "Dear sister, are you going to pretend you didn't see me earlier." A particularly cheesy voice spoke out. Great, my perfect day just got ruined. Ignoring Emma, I grabbed my
(Karis's pov) Up till now, I had no idea why Father had called me. He took his seat at the head of the table while Miranda sat by his side dutifully like a good wife. "How have you been dear? You seem to be glowing after you got married." Christian started to butter me up. He had a creepy smile on his face that made me feel something was off. "I have been doing great; the atmosphere at the De Marco estate is better than being surrounded by you pretentious bitches." I sneered, not sugarcoating my words. Father started to cough, understanding what I was implying. "That is no way to talk about mother and sister." Miranda butts in, her face marred with fury. "Mother, I had no idea my dead mother Hazel had another child. Why don't I have any idea of this father?" I acted oblivious to what she meant. Miranda's face flushed further. It was enjoyable to see her mad. Dad looked at me with his mouth agape, stunned by my behaviour; I was never the type to talk smack about peo
(Karis's pov) I could hear my heart beating in my chest from my ears as Skyler inched closer. His breath was a mix of alcohol and mint. I was already tipsy so just imagine the kind of situation I was in. The cold winter breeze blew across us. My hands clenched and before I could evade him in my drunk state. "I want to kiss your lips so badly, Sunny. Would it be a sin if I listened to my inner thoughts this once?" My breath hitched, "Skyler, I can't," even if I was tipsy, I could not kiss him. "Shush, that's enough. It won't be nice to just stop thinking about anything and focus on me." His thumb was rubbing my lips as his dark obsidian eyes drew me in. "Red," I heard someone call from behind and I froze. Skyler's jaw clenched as I shoved him off to look behind. I was nervous like I was just caught cheating by my husband, only that it wasn't my husband but my ex-husband. Xander stood a few steps away from us in a long jacket under the light snow as the breeze blew r
(Karis's pov) Going out with Skyler and Bertha was the best decision I made. Unlike what I had expected, Skyler didn't question me much about the reason I moved to the De Marco estate, nor did he mention it, which I appreciate because I don't want to imagine how Bertha would react if she found out. I had gotten a private room at a karaoke place where there was also BBQ and drinks. It was a fun combo. Loud music was playing in the background while Bertha was singing, and I would not lie. She wasn't exactly the best singer, but it was fun watching her. Skyler and I just laughed at her while enjoying our BBQ and some alcohol, and I think I might have drank a little too much, but I was still sober. "That was fun," Bertha chimed after finishing a song then quickly gulped down some of her beer. "So what did you think of my performance? The great Bertha Rivers." She excitedly said feeling a bit tipsy as she sluggishly sat by my side. "It was perfect," I lied, being a supp
(Karis's pov) Never go for a battle unprepared, that was something everyone knew and I definitely didn't come unprepared. I had more than enough evidence to blackmail Christian. When Lavender informed me this morning about the meeting, I knew he had finally decided to sell the company, so I diligently prepared. It was comical how his beloved daughter was missing, and all he thought about at the moment was how to make a profit. His jaw clenched and he seemed to have grown a few more grey hair. I signalled Lavender, and they brought out some interesting pictures that made his blood pressure spike. Father started coughing seriously and accidentally knocked off a glass cup to the floor. "I don't have all day, so please tell me if you are taking the offer or not. I know you don't want to liquidate." I pushed his buttons further not really bothered by the fact he was coughing his heart out. Dad is meant to be in perfect health so I was sure this was a play to get my pit
(Karis's pov) Last night was etched in my memories. When I tucked Val in bed she asked me if we could truly stay together. I didn't give her an answer knowing it would break her heart. When did Xander get so close to her that he held such a spot? My brows furrowed, and my eyes opened as I glanced to the side drawer where my phone was ringing from. The first thing that caught my attention was the bouquet of fresh roses kept there. It was a different bouquet from yesterday with a small note. I sluggishly sat up to pick up my phone, and the note that read. ' even under the stars, your glow isn't overshadowed. The moon was beautiful. Isn't it?' Oh my God, Xander should give me a break. The moon is beautiful. Isn't it? Was the same as I love you in a Japanese poetic way. Staying close to him is a big risk. The ringing sound of my phone finally drew back my attention. My brows furrowed to see it was Lavender. "Good morning ma'am ..." she greeted me. "Good morni
(Karis's pov) This wasn't how I planned Christmas to be; walking through the door, I immediately spotted Vance and Val playing around. It was a beautiful sight but not as stunning as the full windows display. The part of the roof to the walls was made of glass, and it felt like I was under the sky. It was way different from the last time I was here with Xander. "It's beautiful," I muttered impressed by the stylish decor. I didn't even want to leave here anymore. "I know, it was meant to be your birthday present before things went south. It's four years overdue now." I heard Xander's voice from behind me as he moved to stand by my side. He just kept on trying to infiltrate my boundaries but it would take more than sweet words to mend a broken heart. First I wanted to find the truth about everything. "A fancy pretty cage. Stop talking, sweet words. It feels weird coming from a devil like you." I retorted my gaze going back to Val and Vance. I wondered which other mat
(Xander's pov) It was surprising that Benji was able to get information on the hospital in less than 24 hours. It was pretty assuring how reliable he was. "That's not news; the issue was how they were able to steal the baby," I asked Benji, although I had a good idea. The most possible situation was that Karis was drugged and her memories are hazy about what happened in the labour room. She gave birth to twins but couldn't remember. "The doctor that helped her deliver was found dead this morning. He was assassinated, but from his personal files, I was able to dig up information about how he swapped her medication records during the scan, and originally, they didn't know it was twins because Val was blocking Vance. So the plan then was to give Karis a dead child but it turned out to be twins." The more Benji explained the angrier I got. My fist clenched until my knuckles were white. Emma was rescued yesterday, and a few minutes later, the doctor was found dead.
(Xander's pov) Her hands were wrapped around my shoulders as she straddled my back; at times, I wished I knew what was going through her head. Karis went silent; deep down, I had a feeling that she was probably thinking about running off again. She loved to run, and I do love to chase, but at times, I wished she would stop running from me. I know what happened between Emma and me really fucked up things between us but there was something more than always stood as a barrier between us. I only hope with time I can melt the ice that surrounded her heart. This morning, I was woken up by the twins, Val and Vance, demanding an explanation about everything that happened. Of course, there was only so little I could say to 4 years old, but it seemed my words worked because they were playing little matchmakers. I was glad I got to be close to Val before knowing she was mine it made things easier. The only one I had to win over was Karis for her to open up her heart for the h
(Karis's pov) It feels like I was set up because why was it taking so long to get a butler. "Because you are the devil I hate." I retorted. It was dangerous to stay in the same space as him. "Xander, please, you are invading my personal space..." I want to tell him to let go; I wasn't comfortable in my ex-husband's arms with him holding me this close to him. I felt his heartbeat and his breath was trickling on my skin. His hoarse voice cut me off, a very bad personality trait of his. He never let me finish talking and it was very annoying. "I love your personal space since, unfortunately, I am the devil that loves your sin. I love the sin you committed to having fallen in love with me and gotten married. I will say it a thousand times, Karis: no matter how you run, my arm is the place that will welcome you in the end." My heart skipped a beat; ever since I met Xander again, he felt like a different person. The Xander I knew was not expressive of his feelings b
(Karis's pov) I jolted awake when a mischievous fireball jumped on me, "What's happening!!" I screamed with my heart racing. The next thing I heard was a childish laugh. Valeria was on the duvet laughing at me. It wasn't how I expected to be woken up but it was refreshing to see she was in a good mood. "Merry Christmas, mummy; wake up. It is already 10, and you have been sleeping for so long." she chimed excitedly. "Merry Christmas Angel," I replied with a small smile on my cheeks. "How was your night?" I asked her, stretching out my hands. Oddly, I slept like a baby last night. My insomnia didn't come at me. I slept so long. "It was fine. There is someone I want you to meet." She chimed, then got off the bed, running outside the room. It seemed like she was urging someone to come in. "There is no need to be scared. She isn't scary." I heard Val's little voice. I kind of had an idea of who it was and it only made me nervous. My hands clutched the duvet as I waited. Fin
