Tess Sunrise’s pov
I was found as an abandoned infant on a mountain hiking trail with a rolled-up piece of aged parchment with my name written on it in lovely calligraphy and a letter written in strange symbols. At the bottom was a huge paw print that I discovered was from a large wolf or bear. Except for the few runes that were evident in the letter, no one could decipher the rest of the odd writing. I had taken it to some college professors to see if they could decipher it, but they just wanted to keep it to run tests, which I refused. Feeling that it was important and part of who I was and who my parents were I held onto it like a treasure. I still have the piece of parchment hanging in a silver frame on the wall of the one-room studio apartment that I currently reside in. I grew up in an orphanage. Once I turned twenty-one, I aged out of the state-run facility and was cast out into the world all to my own devices. Given a small stipend, I was able to get myself housing and a few belongings to furnish my meager dwelling. Thankfully, I didn't have to become a stripper and was currently employed by a company that cleans the residences of well-off clients. Today was my first day and my coworker Rosie was a sweet older lady. She filled me in on the man’s penthouse we were assigned with. “He is an odd fellow, handsome as all get out and very eccentric. His name is Mister Draeger and he has a cat called Samson. When we arrive, let me introduce you to him so he doesn't get all pissy with you,” she warned me, and I nodded. I planned on being on my best behavior since I needed this job desperately to keep me from having to work a strip pole in my undergarments like other girls I had known who had gone off on their own. Once we arrived at the stranger’s penthouse door after riding up an elevator, I chewed on the inside of my bottom lip, not familiar with anyone who had so much wealth. I figured that he must be an old grumpy bastard who screwed over people to get his money. At least that's what I had thought until we entered the place and I saw him coming from the back bedroom. Mister Draeger looked like a thirty-something no-nonsense hitman. His eyes were as sharp as his stubble-covered jawline, and damn, he was sexy. It oozed off of him like a tantalizing desert. My brow furrowed, though, because something was very off about him. His smell was different. Not off-putting but rather mysterious and I found myself watching him closely like he could pounce at any moment. “He seems upset that you brought me,” I murmured to Rosie and she told me to ignore the brut. “He's all bark and no bite. Plus I need coverage for my vacation,” she asserted. Seeing the fluffy black cat slinking between the man’s feet, my eyes widened as I knelt down to stroke its fur. I had an odd connection with all kinds of animals and nature yet something was different with this feline. Its yellow eyes held an intelligence, but I ignored my intuition and continued to pet the small beast as I announced that I loved cats. The man started muttering distasteful things about the cat shedding, and I shook my head, seeing that it just needed some minor grooming care. “Come along, kitty, I will brush him out for you, Sir,” I announced as I dug in my purse for my fine-toothed comb. Taking a seat on the plush white couch I lifted the cat and began grooming the appreciative feline. Hearing the man announce that he was leaving and for Rosie to lock up, I glanced up to sneak a look, and our eyes connected. Swallowing uncomfortably at getting caught ogling him. He paused momentarily but then turned and stormed out of his home. Sighing Rosie huffed and said, “Tess, stop playing with Samson and go to the bedroom to change the bed sheets. I will point out where I store the clean linens.” Seeing Samson gazing up at me I smiled and stroked his freshly combed coat. “I better get this mess cleaned up before your master has a coronary,” I snickered as I gathered the piles of black fluff and asked Rosie where the trash was. “You're supposed to be following me around to get familiarized with the layout. If we lose Mister Draeger as a client we will lose a handsome check,” she complained, making me feel like shit. “Sorry, but the cat needed tending to,” I mumbled softly, and she eyed me oddly. Following her into the bedroom, I pinched my lips together at seeing the enormous king-size bed. “Putting a fitted sheet on this is going to suck,” I murmured as I started pulling off the dirty one. A woman’s red lacy thong flew into the air and I raised my brow as I watched it fall to the carpet. “Either Mister Draeger is very kinky or his bedmate forgot their panties,” I laughed as I pointed out the red fabric to Rosie. She just brushed it off and added, “That's not the first pair I have seen, Tess. You know how these rich bachelors are, full of hormones and ready to rut with any willing filly.” I snickered and then asked her if she was raised on a farm, and she grinned slightly and nodded. Lifting the panties up with my fingertips I asked her what I should do with them. “Toss me in the trash, dear. That's what he always wants me to do with the leftovers,” she mumbled. So I took them back to the kitchen and disposed of them like I had the cat fur. Rosie continued spouting off a list of things that I had to be certain to do every time I was scheduled to the penthouse and I listened while Samson followed me around the premises.Eros Draeger pov Slapping my forehead I realized that I didn't want to go to the human bar at this hour and exhaled deeply. “Guess I will go to the Relruz,” I murmured and headed to my ensuite. After showering and dressing myself, I grabbed my wallet and keys. Exiting my bedroom, I saw Tess on my white leather couch, brushing out Samson and leaving piles of black fur in small piles. The feline looked like he had died and gone to heaven. I was surprised that he wasn't reciting sonnets to the woman. Rosie was washing my large windows that overlooked the Vegas strip and my walk-out balcony. “I'm going and won't be returning later so please lock up when you're finished, Rosie,” I called out. “Certainly, sir,” she responded and I noticed that Tess looked up at me. Our eyes connected, and I felt a sharp, stabbing pain in my heart. I rubbed at my chest absentmindedly. Scowling I looked away and continued to my door. Stopping by the table, I grabbed my cell phone, intending t
Tess Sunrise pov Finishing with the last cleaning duties with the penthouse I exhaled deeply and asked, “How often is this place cleaned?” “Every day, dear. Mister Draeger likes a spotless environment,” Rosie replied and I nodded. I sat on the sofa and Samson jumped onto my lap. I petted him as Rosie shook her head. “I will loan you the penthouse key for when I leave for my vacation. You'll have to make arrangements for a different ride here,” she added, and I exhaled deeply, regretting getting employment several miles away from my apartment. “I will find a way to get here on time daily,” I sighed unconvincingly. Giving me a sharp glare, Rosie said, “Get up and brush out the wrinkles on the couch, and let's head out so I can lock it up.” Ruffling Samson’s neck I told the feline that I would bring him treats when I returned the following morning. The cat rubbed his head on my calf making me giggle. Grabbing my purse, I followed Rosie out into the hallway while she locked the
Tess Sunrise pov Waking up from a horrible night of tossing and turning in my twin-size bed, I sat up, rubbing my tired eyes to see the time, and figured I should get my butt moving. After dressing quickly and putting my mop of red hair up in a ponytail, I grabbed my purse, locked up my apartment, and headed out. Thoughts about my strange visitors last night still plagued my mind and I decided to inform Mister Eros Draeger to let his pal know that I didn't appreciate him showing up at my apartment. It irked me that he followed me there. I couldn't fathom how he had managed it but it was unnerving. Rolling my eyes as I went over the conversation we had had and I was stumped by his question of what I was. “I'm a human,” I muttered sourly and continued walking down the pavement. Seeing the convenience store up ahead I decided to get myself some food for breakfast and Samson the treat I had promised. The bell dinged overhead as I entered and stopped suddenly at seeing a f
Eros Draeger pov Watching Tess leave for the night, my chest felt heavy yet again in her presence and it annoyed me greatly. I followed her around and watched her clean up my penthouse thoroughly. Not that it was in any way messy or dirty. I just liked an overly clean environment, and her petite form was a delight to behold, especially when she bent over, and her perfectly shaped bottom was pert in the air like a juicy apple ready for a bite. Samson hopped up onto the sofa beside me and sighed bringing me away from my thoughts. “You could have been a gentleman and offered her a ride home, but nooooo you're just an asshole. I hope nothing bad happens to her, I believe that I like her,” he meowed. “You like her because she fed you that God-awful-smelling tuna,” I huffed, and he shrugged. “She saw Faro which is impossible for a human. I'm curious about what she could be,” I blurted as I rubbed my eyes. “Does our reaper buddy have a clue since he visited her home and met her f
Eros Draeger pov “Shut up, Samson. I treat you well enough and I don't want nor can I have a mate,” I snapped at the furry nuisance. His yellow eyes narrowed at me and he stuck his tiny pink tongue out at me. “I desire nothing more than to wring your tiny neck cat,” I spat and Samson snubbed me as he jumped beside Faro and sat. “He will never be able to love another and certainly not Tess Sunrise. She's much too sweet for an asshole like him,” Samson hissed. Chuckling at both of us, Faro sat back and sighed. “I can pop into her place when she's here at work and snoop around her place if you think that will help?” He offered, and I pinched my lips together, unsure if I should even pursue the young woman for a few hours of pleasure. “I don't know if that's a good idea bud. I can't see myself in a committed relationship. Not as who and what I am. Plus, ol Lucifer put me on earth for punishment, not for me to meet a mate and settle down here,” I muttered. Both of them loo
Tess Sunrise pov Once I returned home, I fell straight into my bed, completely wiped out. My day had been horrendous with Eros watching my every move. I made sure that I cleaned everything spectacularly. Muscles hurt on my body I didn't know that I had. Turning to my back my narrowed eyes went to the window and stared at the full moon. My skin felt odd like it was rippling, and something wanted to break out from within. I rubbed my forearms to rid myself of the annoying feeling. “Stop it, body; I am too tired for this crap,” I murmured and pinched my mouth and eyes closed as my mind filled with images of Mister Draeger. That night I slept better because I had worked myself to the bone. The dreams of Eros Draeger were much more appealing than a hindrance to my sleep. Seeing the sun shining through my eyelids I yawned and looked at my alarm clock. Cursing at the time I scrambled from my bed and quickly readied myself to rush to his penthouse. Having nothing to eat I loc
Tess Sunrise pov “It's a long walk, as you know,” I mumbled softly and he shrugged then eyed me with a smirk. “Can you drive because Eros left his car keys,” he giggled like a small child. He pointed to a key fob in the table by the front door. Glancing over at the emblem on it I shook my head and mumbled a curse word. “I'm not driving his Aston Martin, Sir. You can but I'm hoofing it,” I asserted and watched him pout. “I don't drive so hoofing sounds grand,” Faro grumbled and opened the door for me. I grabbed my purse and cell phone and reminded him to lock the door. I glanced back at Samson chirping at us both and told him in a silly voice that we would be back in a bit. When I turned back, Faro was shaking his head at the cat and then gestured for me to exit. “A word of advice: don't engage in conversation with me when others are near us both,” he advised, and I furrowed my brow as I glanced at him. Putting his index finger to his lips I shook my head as we wal
Tess Sunrise pov “You're welcome. Um, Do you have anything to drink, perchance? I'm somewhat parched from the walk,” Faro said as he opened my refrigerator, saw it was bare within, stood back abruptly, and glanced at me with a frown. “Why is there just a pizza box in your fridge? Don't you have food?” He questioned in disbelief. Before I could answer, he was opening my empty cabinets and making odd sounds, finding them all empty, minus a couple of mismatched plates and glasses. “I was going to get a little groceries when I got paid on Friday since I need to save quite a bit for rent and the cost of utilities,” I explained and his brow furrowed. “No wonder you inhaled the omelet this morning, you poor thing. Does Eros know this?” Shaking my head I gave him an odd look and smiled at him shaking his head and muttering about why I would mention it to the asshole. “It's only Tuesday, though,” he mumbled softly, and I shrugged. “I can go to the soup kitchen and get a meal o
Tess Sunrise’s pov Watching my toddler son, whom I had named Severin Draeger, wobble on his legs chasing after Samson, I thought about his father. Eros would have been thrilled to know that he had a son; at least, I thought that he would. My son looked like him but had my green eyes and fae magic. He had grown quickly and Gideon informed me that it was due to his Lycan. Severin was already walking and speaking words. Samson agreed to be his teacher and the pair spent lots of time together. Currently, they were running around the fountain located in the center of the gardens on my grandparent's estate. Severin was laughing at Samson disappearing and then reappearing in front of him. Resting my chin in my hand I sighed. I missed Eros, and my heart refused to relent to another. Even though Samson continued to try and weasel his way inside my heart, I continued to refuse his advances. Feeling a shift in the air near me I turned to see Faro appear. He looked at me with a
Tess Sunrise’s pov The dinner with my dad was already a week ago and went better than I expected. It turned out he wasn't the man that Faro and I had seen from the ridge. No, Ciaran looked like his dad, my grandfather, and his mate had been wonderful. She greeted me as if I were her own child and it was refreshing. Currently, I was trying to sleep, but I kept dreaming of Eros, and hot flames seemed to consume me each time I tried to reach him. In the dream tonight, he told me that he loved me and that I had to stay away,, hurting my heart. I woke up with tears running down my cheeks in the pitch darkness. “Is Eros still alive?” I questioned myself because this visit seemed too real to be just a dream. Unable to sleep anymore, I scooted from my bed and went to the bathroom, hoping that my period would come. I was late and figured that I was pregnant. Fearing it was Marcin's I debated on what to do. If it was Eros's, I would be devastated if I aborted, so I made the decisio
Eros Draeger's pov Appearing in Lucifer’s personal dungeons, which I knew were located underneath his bedroom in his house, I shuddered. I was going to be tortured before being tossed into the eternal pit of fire. Glancing around, I didn't see him but knew he would arrive shortly, so I stood and waited. It wasn't as if I could escape. “Well, well look at who has graced me with their lying mated ass! I suppose that you have a heartbeat, too?” Lucifer sneered appearing behind me. Gritting my molars I turned my head to see him gripping a razor chain whip. “Oh goody, you're going to use your favorite torture weapon,” I muttered sarcastically and watched the steam coming off his skin. “I don't like being lied to, Eros,” he snarled and I snorted. “That's ironic since you're the king of lies,” I spat bitterly, and he snapped the whip across my cheek, causing my flesh to tear. Deizel! Bind his wrist and ankles to the post, I don't want him to escape…not that he could,” Lucif
Tess Sunrise's pov Despite Samson and Faro's protest I ignored them both and headed upstairs to find Eros. I loved him and hated that he was suffering. When I came to his bedroom, the door was closed, so I knocked softly to announce that I was coming inside. When I did I saw Eros sitting on the edge of his mattress with his face buried in his hands and quickly went to stand before him. Raising my fingers to his temple he glanced up at me and said, “Kryoz saw your mate mark on my collarbone and will inform Lucifer…you are in danger.” Pinching my lips together I stared into his eyes and said, “We are in this together, Eros.” Shaking his head as he lowered his eyes from mine. He hesitated briefly before saying, “I need to let you go; I don't want you harmed, Tess.” Furrowing my brow I inhaled sharply and told him no. “My heart is breaking, don't say that. I love you, Eros!” Giving me a glare he growled, “You will DIE because of ME! The devil will tear you apart limb by limb an
Tess Sunrise's pov As we entered the kitchen, I noticed Samson, and when he turned around, his eyes were centered directly on me, making my cheeks begin to blush. I lowered my eyes from him and kept my attention on Eros. Unsure about what had happened between us, I peered over at him, curious about the dream that I had and why it seemed so real. I loved Eros, that I had no doubt, but my dream was very intense, and it made me feel something different. Shaking my head when Eros asked me if I wanted some breakfast I told him that I would just like a cup of coffee. “Samson, if you would, please pour Tess a cup of coffee and bring it to the table,” he asserted as he pulled out a chair for me. “Here you go, sweetheart,” Samson said softly as he set the steaming cup before me. I glanced up at him and said, “Thanks,” and he winked at me. Swallowing uncomfortably I ignored it and took a sip of the hot drink. Seeing Eros rise and head toward Faro I turned and grabbed Samson’s arm and
Tess Sunrise's pov Turning on my bedroom light I stepped into my room and noticed that the plants that I passed began to bloom. Colorful blossoms started to emerge from each plant that was within the space and I creased my brow. Curious if I was causing it I stepped out onto the balcony and glanced at the foliage. Seeing them all doing the same thing I snickered and decided to ask Samson about it. Closing my eyes, I think about him, and a whoosh of air brought me to his bathroom and him in the shower. “Oh my God! I'm so sorry!” I shrieked and rushed out of the restroom. Hearing the door open Samson asked me why I was there. Glancing over at him soaking wet I stammered, “I made the plants in my room all bloom. Do you know why?” A grin came to his face as he nodded. “Let me get dressed, and we can talk,” he said firmly, and I told him okay. As I waited for him I scanned his bedroom and noticed that it was full of magical stuff. My skin was humming when I approached d
Tess Sunrise's pov Relaxing next to Eros I was smiling after I had shifted back to my normal self alongside him. The fear of my possible pregnancy had waned, and I felt that I hadn't conceived, which brought me peace. “That was incredible,” Eros commented and I side-eyed him and nodded. “Yes it was, thank you for that,” I mumbled softly and turned to face him. His face had returned to its younger appearance, and I raised my fingers up to caress his smooth cheek. “If you want to meet your mom, we should hurry and locate her because Samson is certain that Marcin isn't going to stop trying to get you,” he said sullenly. He turned himself toward me and wrapped his arms around my midsection to hold me close. “We can go anywhere you want but not to Vegas since you're wanted for questioning,” he muttered. Nodding, I chewed on my bottom lip and said, “We could go stay at my grandparent's house, and then I could see if I can meet my dad. Plus we can learn more about what we are.” He ch
Tess Sunrise's pov Laying down on my mattress I furrowed my brow as I thought about being pregnant. “I don't want to have a child," I muttered sourly and hugged myself. “If it's not Eros's, then I will get rid of it,” I murmured, then teared up, feeling my heart breaking in my chest. Hearing a light knock on my door I sat up and went to answer it. Seeing Samson standing there I eyed him curiously. “I thought you might need company because you seemed so sad,” he said softly. Just as I was going to ask about Eros he said, “Eros is sleeping soundly and will be fine. I'm concerned about you and believe that I can help you with your unease.” Pinching my lips together, I breathed in deeply and stepped to the side so he could come in, but he remained standing in the doorway. Lowering his eyes he exhaled deeply and peered up at me. “If Eros denies you and the child if you're carrying one that isn't his, I will take responsibility and care for you and the infant.” I stare
Tess Sunrise's pov Furrowing my brow I was awakened by a ruckus in the hallway and scrambled from my bed. I slipped on a pair of pants and a tee before cautiously opening my door to see Gideon and Faro carrying an unconscious Eros to his room. “What is going on?” I asked them both. “He got a conversion bite from your grandpa and is currently going through the change,” Faro explained and I raised both my eyebrows. “He what?!” My grandfather hoisted up Eros's prone body and huffed, “I gave him my conversion bite so he can become a hybrid lycan.” “But why would he want that,” I asked him in befuddlement. They both gave me a toothy grin until Faro blurted out, “Because he loves you but won't admit it to himself.” “Plus, he wants Marcin’s head,” my grandfather added, and I exhaled sharply. “Is he going to be alright,” I questioned in concern, and they both shrugged, causing me to get worried. “It may take a few days to complete the process,” Faro informed me as I followed them to
