Chapter Fifty-Six

Emma's POV

One week later, I found myself standing outside Nicholas’s room, my palms sweaty and my heart pounding in my chest. It was my first day back at work, and I was about to face the one person I had been avoiding. The implications of Lena’s deception weighed heavily on my conscience, but I couldn't act recklessly. It wasn't my place to reveal Lena’s secret, yet if she didn’t come clean soon, I knew I would have to intervene for Nicholas’s sake.

Taking a deep breath, I pushed open the door. Nicholas was sitting by the window, a rare smile on his face as he took in the morning sun. Despite everything he went through, he still managed to look regal and composed.

“Good morning, Nicholas,” I greeted him softly, trying to keep my tone light.

“Emma,” he replied, turning to face me with a warm smile. “It’s good to see you back. How are you feeling?”

“I’m doing okay. How about you?”

He rolled his shoulders in a casual shrug. “As well as one can be in my situation. But it’s good to have
