Mrs Wadsley walked through the door of the private room at the wedding venue, behind Eva.

"What's this? What are you doing, Eva?" She asked immediately when the door clicked shut.

The moment she met her mother's eyes, Eva felt her heart drop. Her hands shook while her fingers trembled on a hem of her wedding dress, forcing a bright smile over the rising panic.

"Mom," Eva stuttered. Her voice was just above a whisper. "It's not what you think.”

Mrs. Wadsley's eyes slitted her face hardened. "Really? It looks exactly like what I think it is. What's going on?"

Eva opened her mouth to answer, but nothing came out of her lips. Her mother moved closer to her, lowering her voice while she looked around, conscious of whether anyone was listening in.

Eva," she spat, razor-sharp. "Come on, be honest with me. Is that really you?”

Eva's lips parted, and her breathing became shallow. "Mom, listen, I can explain -"

"Oh my God," her mother echoed, shaking.

"It's you! What have you done? Where's Ava?”

The door to the private room opened before Eva could get a word out, and in strode Mr. Wadsley with a bright face lighting up as his eyes fell upon his wife.

"There you are, darling. What's - " His eyes cut to Eva, and his smile faltered a bit. "Ava, what's going on here? Why are you guys here? He chuckled before speaking again. “Did you get in trouble on your wedding day?”

Mrs. Wadsley spun to her husband, her face whitening. "It's Eva, not Ava. She's the one who married Shawn.”

Mr. Wadsley’s jaw tightened as he stared at his daughter. “Eva, what is she talking about? Where is your sister?”

Eva stepped back, her hands wringing nervously. “Dad, please, let me explain.”

“You’d better start now,” he demanded, his voice low and full of tension.

Eva took a deep breath; her voice was shaking. "Ava … left. She didn't want to go through with the wedding. She said she couldn't do it, and she asked me to call it off. I couldn't let her run off and ruin everything.” She paused for a while. “I thought I should help by stepping in and protecting the family’s image.”

Mrs. Wadsley's eyes widened in horror. "You thought you should help? Do you have any idea what you have done? Do you understand the repercussions this will bring if it gets out to the Darlingtons?"

Tears welling in her eyes, Eva shook her head. "I didn't have a choice! I couldn't let Ava destroy our family's name. Shawn was waiting at the altar. Everyone was there. What was I supposed to do?”

He pinched the bridge of his nose, frustration lacing his tone. "So Ava ran off, and you decided to play her? Eva, this isn't a bloody game. This is marriage-a binding, legal contract!"

"I know that!" Eva snapped, shaking her voice. "I know how grave this is. But what else was I to do? Ava was gone, and I could not stand idly by while it all fell to pieces!”

For an instant, Mrs. Wadsley's face relaxed; then it composed itself anew. "Eva, I can see why you'd believe this was something that should be done, but you've just gotten yourself into a situation from which there is no recovery. How long do you think you can maintain this? Do you even know what you have signed up for?”

She shrugged her shoulders, hunching them in a way as her voice dropped to a whisper. "I really don't know, Mom. I'm trying to figure it out. I just...I didn't want to disappoint anyone."

He exhaled heavily, his voice serious in its gruffness: "You are in over your head, Eva. The Darlingtons are influential and powerful people, and if Shawn or his family finds out about this deception, both our business and us will suffer the consequences greatly.”

"I know," Eva whispered back almost inaudibly.

Mrs. Wadsley closed in; her voice was unyielding, yet not devoid of feeling. "You've made your bed, Eva. Now you sleep in it. You can't keep being that timid and shy girl you've been. From this day forward, you are Ava Wadsley, Shawn's wife. You need to act like it."

"I know," Eva said, shaking. "I will try my best."

"Your best won't be enough," Mr. Wadsley cut in sharply. "You have to be perfect. No mistakes. No slip-ups. Do you understand? If anyone suspects anything, this whole charade comes tumbling down."

Eva nodded tearfully. "I won't let you down. I promise."

Mrs. Wadsley laid an assurance touch on her daughter's shoulder. "We are going to help you, but you must listen to us. No more playing Eva. You must become Ava's life wholly."

"I will," Eva whispered.

Mr. Wadsley's face relaxed a little, but his voice was colder than steel. "And the last thing, you have to put your emotions aside. Shawn is going to expect a wife who loves and supports him, also in the business world. You must be that for him, no matter what feelings you harbour inside."

Eva wiped away her tears and nodded resolutely. "I'll do whatever it takes. I won't let anyone find out."

It was as if the weight of it all had pressed down upon them all. The only sound was the one of strained silence.

The silence stretched between them, everyone in their own thoughts, until Mrs. Wadsley spoke; her voice was no louder than a whisper. "We'll figure this out together. But for now, you need to get back out there and play your part. The guests will notice if you're gone too long."

Eva nodded, the heavy heartiness welling into her. "Ok."

They approached the door, and the sound of laughter and music from the reception faintly filled the air. It was as if they had just stepped into the hall that Eva chanced upon two guests who stood nearby talking.

"Did you notice Ava seems… different today?" One said, curiosity laced his tone.

"Yes," he said. "More quiet than usual. Almost nervous. Not like her at all."

Eva's breath caught, and her anxiety spiralled as she shot a look at her parents, with a pale face.

Mrs. Wadsley appeared to be inching closer as she hissed, "Calm down, Eva, you can't show them you're panicking."

Mr. Wadsley supplemented in a low, serious tone, "Remember, dear, no slip-ups, no mistakes.”

Eva swallowed hard, her mind racing as she thought of the unprecedented possibilities. 'What if people already noticed? What if Shawn finds out too?'

Her mother’s voice echoed in her ears as they stepped back into the crowd. “Smile, sweetie. You’re Ava now. Don’t forget that.”

Smiling brightly, Eva rejoined Shawn at the head table, all the while in a muddle with her mind. A feeling that already the walls were closing in would not go away.

She thought silently while returning a smile to Shawn. ‘I can do this. From now on, I'm Ava Darlington.’

Soft clinking of utensils echoed in the large dining hall, warm chandelier lights casting golden reflections on the polished table. The air was permeated with aromas so rich that perfectly cooked dishes could only hope for a fraction of their depth. Shawn set his fork down and locked eyes with Eva to such a degree that Eva had to stop right in the middle of her bite."Ava," he said lightly, but his eyes gleamed with interest. "I've been meaning to ask you.” Eva's heart jerked. She made her eyes lock on his and smiled wryly. "What is that?Shawn leaned back in his chair, expression straight. "Eva. I didn't see her at the wedding today. I never knew your twin sister could miss your wedding. I thought you guys were inseparable. I really would have thought Eva to be front and center on such a big day."The knife slipped from Eva's fingers, clattering against her plate. She jerked at the sound, the shield of composure she struggled to hold in place splintering just for that one moment.S

“We are going to Paris," Shawn said, handing her the tickets to the flight while smiling at her. "The City of Love. I figured, what better place to celebrate our honeymoon?" Eva stared at him in a blink, with her lips parted in shock. "Paris? You mean… we're leaving today?""Yeah," Shawn corrected; his eyes danced with excitement. "I wanted it to be a surprise.”Guilt pulled at her chest, but voicing her protests was impossible as the pure joy on Shawn's face sated her head. "Oh my God, Shawn, I've always wanted to explore that city…”She paused in an instant and quickly recovered from her emotions, remembering that Ava had gone to Paris a few times for business trips. “I mean, I've been there for business meetings, but I've never gotten the chance to really explore the city.” "Good," he said, hauling her into the circle of his arms. "Then this will be one to remember. Pack your bags, Mrs. Darlington. We have a plane to catch."“Aye aye, Mr Darlington.” they both let out a heartfel

"You don't look like someone who just came back from Paris," Shawn teased, leaning against the kitchen counter the next morning to watch Eva awkwardly trying to make coffee.Eva smiled weakly, concentrating on not messing up the task. "And what does a person returning from Paris look like, exactly?""Relaxed, glowing, still floating on air of romance," he said, demonstrating with his hands. "Instead, you look like you are carrying the weight of the world upon your shoulders.""I'm just readjusting to being back," she replied-her voice light, though her mind weighted down with secrets.Shawn leaned in, his fingers curling over her chin to tilt it upwards. His touch was warm, his eyes soft. "Yeah, you have a new home now.” His expression was replaced by a smirk, “And you have to get used to seeing this handsome face everyday.”Eva burst out laughing, “You flatter yourself too much.” Shawn joined in the laughter. “Well, if you want to put it that way.” He shrugged. “But anyways, welcome

"You still haven't answered my question," Samantha said, crossing her arms as she strolled alongside Eva down the sleek, glass-paneled hallway of Wadsley's Jewels. "What happened to your phone?"Eva stiffened under Samantha's gaze. Samantha wasn't just Ava's best friend, she was sharp, observant, and not one to buy a lie. Eva couldn't afford one misstep."I lost it," Eva said, trying to act as nonchalant as possible. "At the airport, while on my way to Paris. It was chaotic, and before I knew it, it was gone.""Seriously? I've been trying to reach you for days!" Samantha exclaimed, her tone full of disbelieving incredulity."I got a new one in Paris," Eva said smoothly. "But you know how it is, new phone, new number. I didn't have time to update everyone."Samantha narrowed her eyes slightly. "Hmm, okay. But you didn't think to at least call or text me once? That's not like you, Ava."Eva's heart jumped, but she kept her face composed. "It has been a whirlwind, the wedding, the honeym

The morning sun seeped between tinted car windows as Shawn smoothly stopped the vehicle outside Wadsley's Jewels. Eva wriggled in her seat, brushing a strand of hair back behind her ear as she readied herself to exit."You really don't have to do this each day," Eva said, her voice low, but insistent. "I can manage myself with my car."Shawn leaned on the steering wheel, his eyes softening to hers. "I like doing it. Seeing you start your day like this makes mine better."Eva rolled her eyes, but the rising heat in her cheeks told otherwise. "I am being serious, Shawn. This isn't necessary." He leaned over and gently took her hand. "Consider it my way of spending a few extra moments with you."Eva's color deepened further and she fiddled with the strap of her handbag. "You're impossible," she muttered, unable to hide her smile. He grinned. "And you're adorable when you blush."Eva huffed, feigning offense, but her lips curving upwards. "Fine, suit yourself. "Overwhelming enough to forget our friendship anniversary?"Eva let out a sigh, carefully keeping her expression neutral. "I'm so sorry Sam, I'll make it up to you. Her heart boomed in her ears, drowning out the scurrying sounds of the restaurant. Every fiber in her body screamed at her to retreat, but she couldn't-not yet.“What do you mean, Sam?” Eva finally stuttered, forcing a smile that came off a little too tight. “I'm right here.”She slumped back in her chair, crossing her arms. A smirk danced across her lips, running a shiver down Eva's spine. "Don't play dumb with me," she said. "I've known Ava since we were kids. I could spot her from a mile away. "And this doesn't exactly look like resting to me.""It's work," Eva returned succinctly. "I can work from home."Shawn gave a deep, public sigh as he dropped his briefcase onto the chair beside him. "Eva, I know you are upset about the dog. It is okay to take a day to grieve, but don't let it affect you too much.” Eva's body straightened. He thinks this is about the imaginary dog? There were just so many nurses hustling to and fro down the corridors; several of them went toward Ava's room, every time one passed he started up hopeful they'd stop to update him on her status. But none of them did. He ran a hand through his hair, fists clenched. “Oh God, please, let her be okay," he muttered hoarsely to himself. The silence following it was deafening apart from the hum of machinery that whirred at a distance somewhere in the hospital.“What if it's worse than I think? What if…no, no, no, I just can't even think that.” Shawn shook his head, futilely chasing away dark thoughts crawling inside his skull as he leaned further ahead, placing elbows on knees and launching off another muttered prayer in utter desperation.Running footsteps made him turn toward the door as his parents burst in wit

Shawn, listen to me," Ava hurriedly said, shaking, "You have to believe me. It wasn't me who went to Italy. It was Eva.”Shawn was rigid. Are you seriously telling me this now?”"Yes!" exclaimed Ava as she stepped up to him. "True! Two years ago in Italy it was not I who met Norman. It was my twin sister, Eva! Was Eva out to impersonate me!"He had watched her as what she said finally seeped into his brain: "Your sister-your twin had impersonated you? For what?”Eva let out a shaking breath; her voice finally cracked in desperation. "It was last minute, and I was supposed to go off to some event in Italy for a client of mine, but then I fell sick. She remembered stepping out of the shower, wrapping a towel around herself, and walking into the bedroom to find him already dressed, his tie half-done and his phone pressed to his ear.“I’ll be there in thirty minutes,” he had said into the phone, barely glancing in her direction."Leaving already?" she had asked, forcing a lightness into her voice."Busy day."And with that, he'd grabbed his briefcase and was out the door, leaving her standing there, a bead of water trailing down her temple.Eva let out a loud, quivering breath and shook her head. “He's busy, that's all,” Eva told herself for th
