"Ava, what are you doing?" Eva's voice shrill, echoing off the walls of the bridal suite. She stood in the doorway, staring in incredulous horror as Ava hastily gathered her things, the fragile wedding dress left ignored on the mannequin beside her. “Where are you going?”

Ava whipped around to face her, her features set in a determined glare. "Anywhere but here. I'm not going through with this, Eva."

“What?" Eva's heart was racing, her mind refusing to believe what it was hearing. "But everyone's here, the guests, our families. Shawn's waiting."

"Well, I didn't ask them to wait on me, did I?" Ava snapped, the bitterness ripe in her tone as she crammed another dress into her suitcase, her eyes never straying to her sister. "This is all your fault, you know.”

Eva's breath caught, the pang of guilt tight around her heart. "My fault? Ava, I went on that date because you asked me to. I did it to help you, you literally beg me to go on every date with him.”

"Precisely," Ava retorted, her eyes slanted as she finally faced her sister. "I sent you to fill in for me, to keep him company, not to accept a marriage proposal on my behalf."

"I. I didn't mean to," Eva stuttered, her voice quivering. "He proposed out of nowhere. I couldn't just break his heart in front of everyone.”

"Spare me the melodrama," Ava cut her off, her eyes rolling. "You're too soft-hearted, Eva. And just look at what you got me into."

Eva took a pleading step closer with her eyes wide. "Ava, don't do this, please. Just wear the dress and go out there. He's a good man, and he doesn't deserve this…”

"No," Ava said, cutting her off, her voice cold as steel. "You're the one who needs to take responsibility for once. You're the one who said yes, who made him believe I wanted to marry him. Fix it."

And the request that came really took Eva by surprise. Eva's eyes had widened in shock; her mind struggled to wrap itself around what Ava was asking of her. "Fix it? How?”

She cast a sideways glance at the wedding dress, which sat in its corner, curling her lips wryly. "Put it on. Wait in here until I'm gone, then call off the wedding. Tell them there is some sort of emergency and that I have to go."

“An emergency?" Eva repeated, hardly anything more than a whisper; her voice wasn't even recognized as the full implication of what Ava had said hit her. "And Mom and Dad? What am I supposed to say when they find you gone?”

They don't need to know details," snapped Ava, zipping up her bag. "Tell them just what I told you. And whatever you do, don't let them find out about everything we did with shawn." Her voice dropped down to a whisper, and for one moment a shadow of guilt crossed over her eyes, looking away from them. "I don't want to deal with their disappointment."

Eva felt a surge of helpless emotion with this announcement. "And where are you off to, Ava? And Shawn?"

"I'm leaving the country," Ava said, a little smile forming on her face. "James is waiting for me. He… he's who I really want to be with, not Shawn. You know I was just keeping Shawn around for his influence all these months.”

"James?" Eva felt as though her heart had reached the pit of her stomach, remembering the college boyfriend with whom Ava had been so enamored. "Ava, you … you can't just run off like this. Do you know what this will do to everybody? To Shawn?"

Irritation flashed in Ava's eyes. "That is not my problem, Eva, Shawn will live eventually. And as for you…", she stuttered to a halt, her gaze intensifying. "Just do what I said. Wear the dress, play out my excuses, and be done with it. You accepted the proposal in my place, so call it off in my place too. That's the least you can do.”

Anger and heartbreak fought their ways up to her chest as Eva shook with trembling hands. "Ava… please, don't do this. Don't throw everything away like this.”

Ava's eyes momentarily softened before setting once more in their stone-like resolve. "I've already told you, Eva, this is my decision. I'm leaving, and you're going to clean up this mess you've made." She took a deep breath and pushed by her sister. "Goodbye, Eva."

Just like that, she was gone.

Eva's frame stood there, it felt, for an eternity, staring after the door Ava disappeared behind. Her mind was racing with one thought warring with another. Her twin sister was gone, leaving her with the consequences of their actions and the weight of the wedding dress that crushed inside her from all her decisions.

The silence in the room hung heavy and thick upon her skin, weighing her down, casting her gaze into an empty stare at the dress-the delicate lace, the shimmering beads almost mocking her. She could almost hear Ava's words resound within her brain.

“Take responsibility. Fix it.”

Hypnotically, Eva reached out to the dress, stroking her fingers over the intricate fabric. She could still turn around, still could tell them all what Ava had done, show the world the reality behind this artfully created veneer. But then what? Her parents' disappointment, the embarrassment, the hurt in Shawn's eyes,…

Just the mere thought of it all was an ache to her heart.

The other thought had started to take hold now; quiet at first, but getting louder with each passing second.

Maybe this was her chance;a chance with the man she loved, even if it meant being another woman. Nobody would know with Ava gone: not Shawn, not Mom and Dad, nobody.

Eva's heart beat faster; and her trembling fingers took the wedding dress and she slipped her delicate body into it, seized the veil and drew it over her head. She adjusted it with the exacting precision of a bride about to take the aisle, and peered into the glass.

It was only when the soft knock on the door pierced her reverie that she turned to see her father, standing at the door, where pride welled in his eyes and he proceeded into the room. "Ava," he said softly, "it is time. Are you ready?"

Eva's heart pressed against her chest as her gaze met her father's. The decision weighed in the balance within her; each drop of its finality oozed from every pore.

“Dad, there's something you need to know.” Eva managed to let out.

Concern etched on her father's face. “Ava, sweetie, is anything the problem?”

Then she thought again. Wasn't this what she wanted? To be with Shawn.

Then she snuffed the doubt with a quivering breath and deliberately pursued her lips in a small, forced smile, while her head nodded. "Never mind, Dad. I'm ready."

His father's face shone proudly; his features were spread in a kind smile. He reached for her hand, and they started getting themselves ready to go out.

As they left the room, stepped out into the hall, Eva cast one more glance back. A thrill of nervous excitement tangled with the guilt that twisted in her stomach.

This was her chance, and she was going to take it.

As she came onto the plush carpet, circling her arm around her father's, the heels echoed against the polished marble floor. A chandelier of a thousand glittering diamonds seemed to hang above the crowded guests of this ornate hall in a warm, golden glow. Delicate white roses and ivy adorned the aisle as every step brought her closer to the altar. Shawn was standing there, with his well styled short black hair, poised in his white suit, fitting his athletic build perfectly. She couldn't look at Shawn; who was throwing a bright smile in her direction, she couldn't bear all the love and trust in his eyes, knowing what she had done."Dad… I'm scared," Eva whispered, shaking from the heaviness of her thoughts. He smiled proudly and gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. "You look perfect, my darling. You'll do great. Shawn's waiting for you, he's a good guy. You have no reason to be scared, dear."She forced a smile, the words like an emptiness in her mouth. They reached the front, and then,

Mrs Wadsley walked through the door of the private room at the wedding venue, behind Eva. "What's this? What are you doing, Eva?" She asked immediately when the door clicked shut. The moment she met her mother's eyes, Eva felt her heart drop. Her hands shook while her fingers trembled on a hem of her wedding dress, forcing a bright smile over the rising panic."Mom," Eva stuttered. Her voice was just above a whisper. "It's not what you think.” Mrs. Wadsley's eyes slitted her face hardened. "Really? It looks exactly like what I think it is. What's going on?"Eva opened her mouth to answer, but nothing came out of her lips. Her mother moved closer to her, lowering her voice while she looked around, conscious of whether anyone was listening in.Eva," she spat, razor-sharp. "Come on, be honest with me. Is that really you?”Eva's lips parted, and her breathing became shallow. "Mom, listen, I can explain -""Oh my God," her mother echoed, shaking. "It's you! What have you done? Where's

Soft clinking of utensils echoed in the large dining hall, warm chandelier lights casting golden reflections on the polished table. The air was permeated with aromas so rich that perfectly cooked dishes could only hope for a fraction of their depth. Shawn set his fork down and locked eyes with Eva to such a degree that Eva had to stop right in the middle of her bite."Ava," he said lightly, but his eyes gleamed with interest. "I've been meaning to ask you.” Eva's heart jerked. She made her eyes lock on his and smiled wryly. "What is that?Shawn leaned back in his chair, expression straight. "Eva. I didn't see her at the wedding today. I never knew your twin sister could miss your wedding. I thought you guys were inseparable. I really would have thought Eva to be front and center on such a big day."The knife slipped from Eva's fingers, clattering against her plate. She jerked at the sound, the shield of composure she struggled to hold in place splintering just for that one moment.S

“We are going to Paris," Shawn said, handing her the tickets to the flight while smiling at her. "The City of Love. I figured, what better place to celebrate our honeymoon?" Eva stared at him in a blink, with her lips parted in shock. "Paris? You mean… we're leaving today?""Yeah," Shawn corrected; his eyes danced with excitement. "I wanted it to be a surprise.”Guilt pulled at her chest, but voicing her protests was impossible as the pure joy on Shawn's face sated her head. "Oh my God, Shawn, I've always wanted to explore that city…”She paused in an instant and quickly recovered from her emotions, remembering that Ava had gone to Paris a few times for business trips. “I mean, I've been there for business meetings, but I've never gotten the chance to really explore the city.” "Good," he said, hauling her into the circle of his arms. "Then this will be one to remember. Pack your bags, Mrs. Darlington. We have a plane to catch."“Aye aye, Mr Darlington.” they both let out a heartfel

"You don't look like someone who just came back from Paris," Shawn teased, leaning against the kitchen counter the next morning to watch Eva awkwardly trying to make coffee.Eva smiled weakly, concentrating on not messing up the task. "Instead, you look like you are carrying the weight of the world upon your shoulders.""I'm just readjusting to being back," she replied-her voice light, though her mind weighted down with secrets.Shawn leaned in, his fingers curling over her chin to tilt it upwards. His touch was warm, his eyes soft. "You still haven't answered my question," Samantha said, crossing her arms as she strolled alongside Eva down the sleek, glass-paneled hallway of Wadsley's Jewels. "What happened to your phone?"Eva stiffened under Samantha's gaze. Samantha wasn't just Ava's best friend, she was sharp, observant, and not one to buy a lie. Eva couldn't afford one misstep."I lost it," Eva said, trying to act as nonchalant as possible. "At the airport, while on my way to Paris. It was chaotic, and before I knew it, it was gone.""Seriously? I've been trying to reach you for days!" Samantha exclaimed, her tone full of disbelieving incredulity."I got a new one in Paris," Eva said smoothly. "But you know how it is, new phone, new number. I didn't have time to update everyone."Samantha narrowed her eyes slightly. "Hmm, okay. But you didn't think to at least call or text me once? "I can manage myself with my car."Shawn leaned on the steering wheel, his eyes softening to hers. "I like doing it. Seeing you start your day like this makes mine better."Eva rolled her eyes, but the rising heat in her cheeks told otherwise. "I am being serious, Shawn. This isn't necessary." He leaned over and gently took her hand. "Consider it my way of spending a few extra moments with you."Eva's color deepened further and she fiddled with the strap of her handbag. Darlington's mansion loomed over him as Shawn grasped the steering wheel with hands tightly clenched, his mind thinking a mile a minute per second. He never imagined that he would find himself here today, but with everything that had just transpired in seconds ago, he had more pressing things to attend to. All he had to do was learn. The instant he drove into the driveway, he cut off the motor and stepped out, teeth gritted in a granite smile. Air was nearly as cold as ice as he strode up to the front door.A servant flung the door wide open for him before he would have gotten there on his own two pounding feet. "Welcome home, Mr. Darlington." The maid greeted with a smile on her face.Shawn tried to greet back with a smile, but he wasn’t in the mood and he couldn’t fake it."Where's my father?" he asked immediately. Her expression changed at his cold demeanour. She could hear the sound of her heartbeat as she thought about what she was going to face when she got home.Ryan gripped tightly on the steering wheel, jaws clenched in a hard line. He was furious and seething, but beneath the anger was something else. He was supposed to be angry and yelling at her, but all he felt was pity for her.She could feel it also, she hated being treated like that- being vulnerable and pitied but that was the only thing she could hold on to now."Are you ready?" Ryan finally said, rolling up in front of the Wadsley house. The house loomed above, the lights flickered through the windows but not stopping the storm raging in Ava's brain. Her head was spinning, she let out in a soft tone "No." She shivered, her voice quivering. "But do I have a choice?”Ryan sighed and relaxed back into his seat. "You always have a choice in every decision,

There was heavy tension in the room, as Shawn's burning gaze was focused on Ava. Shawn's tone sliced the air like a sharp blade.Ava flinched at his voice, and she stepped back, still trembling. "I—I can explain," she whispered.Shawn's face went cold. "You better have a good explanation for this."Ava's knees wobbled under her. She didn't know how much he heard or where to start her explanation from. "I didn't mean to do any of it, Shawn." she moved closer to him with tears in her eyes, hoping it would make him pity her. "I was used and manipulated by them. I swear– I would never betray you on purpose. Please believe me.”“Used and manipulated?" Shawn let out a bitter chuckle."That's your excuse?"Ava's heart crushed. He didn’t believe her. "I was scared! It was already dark when Ava stepped out of her car. The secluded building stood at the outskirts of the area and she had to walk there. Her grip tightened on the big bag she was holding as she got to the door. She took a deep breath and looked over her shoulder one more time before twisting the door handle. The creak of the open door pushed the bitter scent of scorched cement and motor oil back into her nostrils. Samatha leaned her shoulders against a pile of crates, crossed arms, pursed lips curled into a crazed smile as she saw her. Norman Darlington, however, was sitting in a comfortably broken-in leather armchair in the far corner, whiskey sloshing back and forth between his fingers. A whirlwind of excitement churned in his head as Ava walked toward him.She did not even bat an eyelid. She raised the bag she was holding and slammed it on the table in front of Norman. "There," she spat. "There's the money you both asked for. Now stop this madness before my dad's company goes ban

Henry Darlington was on his phone in his home office when he received a message from one of his clients, Edward Langstone. It was a voice message, and he wondered what was in it. He stopped what he was doing and played the message. There were murmurs of far-off voices, glass clinking, and soft music playing a party, then a familiar voice came in. "Richard Wadsley and Henry Darlington thought they were unstoppable and everyone else, or at least wished they were. They were just emotional fools. I sabotaged their business deal to ruin it in their faces, and they did not even know it was a sabotage. After all those years of friendship and partnership, it was so easy to break them apart. Without the support of each other, they are as good as weak, but my main target was Henry, I only wanted to remove Richard from the picture. “Wow, that's brilliant.” Another voice came in. “So how's the result going?” He chuckled. “Trust me, it's going great. Ryan forced through the doors of Shawn's office without bothering to knock. His jaw was set in a line of urgency, his head a whirlwind of possibilities. The dim light inside the office cast shadows on Shawn's face, who sat behind his desk with his expression filled with controlled fury. The door slammed into the wall but shattered no portion of his stubborn fury. His fingers drummed slowly and deliberate over the fine polished wood. Ryan's pale blue eyes sparkled. "You said something about an emergency," he said, entering and closing the door. "What is it?” His voice was a little coarse and impatient Shawn exhaled, the weight of it coming down hard as it laid on his chest. He did not even look at Ryan, but instead allowed his eye to track the line of the desk in an attempt to put some sort of control on the anger in him. Ava shoved Shawn's brown front door wide open and took a deep breath, waiting there as the door creaked shut behind her. The day's activities hung heavy on her shoulders like a damp cape. And she couldn't wait to relax and have a good night's sleep. She walked in expecting to see Madam Tess all over the kitchen, but the house was quiet. It was at this time tonight that Madam Tess would be cleaning the kitchen and also preparing Shawn's study for his arrival from work. Her hand rested on the chill of the console table as she placed her handbag down. The reflex wasn't comforting. A cold, shivery scuttering feeling crawled down her spine as though someone was standing behind her, watching her.And she saw him.Shawn was at the bottom of the stairs, lit by the faint light of the hallway chandelier.
