"You don't look like someone who just came back from Paris," Shawn teased, leaning against the kitchen counter the next morning to watch Eva awkwardly trying to make coffee.

Eva smiled weakly, concentrating on not messing up the task. "And what does a person returning from Paris look like, exactly?"

"Relaxed, glowing, still floating on air of romance," he said, demonstrating with his hands. "Instead, you look like you are carrying the weight of the world upon your shoulders."

"I'm just readjusting to being back," she replied-her voice light, though her mind weighted down with secrets.

Shawn leaned in, his fingers curling over her chin to tilt it upwards. His touch was warm, his eyes soft. "Yeah, you have a new home now.” His expression was replaced by a smirk, “And you have to get used to seeing this handsome face everyday.”

Eva burst out laughing, “You flatter yourself too much.”

Shawn joined in the laughter. “Well, if you want to put it that way.” He shrugged. “But anyways, welcome back to reality, Mrs Darlington. I'm sure there's going to be piles of work waiting on our desk.”

Eva's smile dropped. The realization that she has to resume work as Ava, weighed on her heavily.

“Oohh, look at that face.” Shawn teased her, snaking his hands around her waist “You don't want to go back to work, right? Should we just elope?

He buried his face in her neck, sucking on it softly “Then we won't have to worry about work. Just me and you being in bed all day, having fun till you lose your voice?” His hands move slowly up her inner thighs.

“Hmmm,” Eva let out a soft moan.

Shawn let out a chuckle as he trailed the kisses down to the top of her breast and lifted her to place her on the counter.

Standing between her legs. “What do you say, Mrs Darlington?” he winked, meeting her gaze.

Eva quickly recovered and pushed him away. “Stop it. Or else we'll both be late for work.” She jumped down from the counter and walked away from him.

“At least, it will be worth it. Don't you think so?” He said louder from behind.

Eva couldn't control the blush forming on her face. “Get ready for work, Shawn.” She responded in the same tone without turning back to look at him.

***********

Later that morning, Eva stood outside Ava's office; hers now, and took a deep breath. She hardly came to the building, she was always working from home with her sister; this responsibility, full to the brim with faking herself as Ava, weighed heavy upon her shoulders.

She flung the door open and stepped inside. It was screaming Ava, sleek, elegant, and immaculately arranged. Presents and cards of congratulations sat on the desk and on some of the shelves, the remnants of the wedding celebration everybody had thought Ava had.

"Ms. Wadsley…I mean, Mrs Darlington." Claire, one of the assistants burst in, lighting up with a smile. "Congratulations on your wedding! The whole team is so thrilled for you."

"Thank you, Claire," Eva said with a well-behaved smile.

She had worked non-stop for the next few hours, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she reviewed designs, typed out emails, and scanned through proposals. Of course, all this could have been akin to familiar territory: she was the silent mover behind Ava's success for the better part of three years, every bestseller design, every brilliant campaign idea born out of their late-night brainstorming sessions.

Eva allowed herself a moment of pride. At least in this area of her life, she didn't have to fake it.

About midday, her father Richard Wadsley walked through the door. His presence was commanding, as always, but his expression held a softness unusual in him.

"Working hard already, I see," he said, further entering the room.

"Some things never change," Eva replied, laying down the papers she had been going through.

He nodded in approval. "I knew you'd step into the role without missing a beat. You've always had a way of handling things efficiently."

"I'm doing my best," she said simply.

Richard sat across from her, studying her closely. "Have you heard from your sister?”

It felt like a punch to the gut. Eva kept her face impassive, though her pulse racing. "No. Why?"

"I have been trying to reach her since the wedding," he replied, his brow furrowing. "Her number's been disconnected."

Eva took a moment to consider the very short message Ava had sent from an unknown number during her honeymoon. "I haven't heard from her either," she lied smoothly.

Richard's face fell as he said, "I just can't believe she'd do this. After all, why would she date Shawn, take the proposal, then disappear on the wedding day.”

She bit her lip as her mind raced further on. How would she explain that Ava never liked Shawn, that the whole relationship was a pre-calculated move of furthering the business connections? Most of all, how would she confess that it wasn't Ava but she who had actually fallen for him and accepted the proposal?

"People make mistakes," she finally brought herself to utter in an extremely soft tone.

“Mistakes?" Richard cut in, his voice edge-sharp with frustration, "Ava? Since when does she make terrible mistakes like this? If this gets out, Do you know how this reflects on our family?”

Eva's conscience pricked but kept her mind clear. "Dad, I'm sure she had her reasons."

"Reasons," he muttered, shaking his head. "Well, whatever they were, they were selfish and she's left us to clean up the mess.”

Eva looked down; his disappointment standing in on her. "She'll come back," she whispered. "She just needs time."

"I hope so," Richard said in a heavy tone of voice.

But Eva didn't mean it, she didn't want her to come back. Her sister's return would cost her heavily.

Their conversation was interrupted by a knock at the door, and Samantha came in holding a clipboard, Ava's best friend and the company's project manager.

"Mr Wadsley, Ava," she said, flashing them a bright smile. "The board meeting is starting soon."

"Thank you, Samantha," Richard said, rising to his feet. "I'll be right there. I have to make a call."

He tapped Eva's shoulder as he left, leaving her alone with Samantha.

As they walked out of the office together, towards the boardroom.

Samantha cast Eva a sidelong. She noticed it, but kept walking with Samantha, her chest coiling with tension.

Samantha turned and suddenly belted her on the shoulder, insistent, but playful. "Ava. You're really not going to say anything? What the hell happened with your phone? I've been trying to reach you since after your wedding. Of course, the one you didn't tell me about. What's going on?" Samantha stared deep into her with concern and curiosity written all over her face.

Ava turned into an iceberg. Her brain was racing, and she was avoiding Samantha's eyes while fumbling for the words.

"You still haven't answered my question," Samantha said, crossing her arms as she strolled alongside Eva down the sleek, glass-paneled hallway of Wadsley's Jewels. "What happened to your phone?"Eva stiffened under Samantha's gaze. Samantha wasn't just Ava's best friend, she was sharp, observant, and not one to buy a lie. Eva couldn't afford one misstep."I lost it," Eva said, trying to act as nonchalant as possible. "At the airport, while on my way to Paris. It was chaotic, and before I knew it, it was gone.""Seriously? I've been trying to reach you for days!" Samantha exclaimed, her tone full of disbelieving incredulity."I got a new one in Paris," Eva said smoothly. "But you know how it is, new phone, new number. I didn't have time to update everyone."Samantha narrowed her eyes slightly. "Hmm, okay. But you didn't think to at least call or text me once? That's not like you, Ava."Eva's heart jumped, but she kept her face composed. "It has been a whirlwind, the wedding, the honeym

The morning sun seeped between tinted car windows as Shawn smoothly stopped the vehicle outside Wadsley's Jewels. Eva wriggled in her seat, brushing a strand of hair back behind her ear as she readied herself to exit."You really don't have to do this each day," Eva said, her voice low, but insistent. "I can manage myself with my car."Shawn leaned on the steering wheel, his eyes softening to hers. "I like doing it. Seeing you start your day like this makes mine better."Eva rolled her eyes, but the rising heat in her cheeks told otherwise. "I am being serious, Shawn. This isn't necessary." He leaned over and gently took her hand. "Consider it my way of spending a few extra moments with you."Eva's color deepened further and she fiddled with the strap of her handbag. "You're impossible," she muttered, unable to hide her smile. He grinned. "And you're adorable when you blush."Eva huffed, feigning offense, but her lips curving upwards. "Fine, suit yourself. But don't let it interfere

Ava…?" Samantha's eyes narrowed at her. “Oh my God I feel so hurt. How could you?” Eva took a deep breath before replying "Relax Sam, I would never forget about it," she said with a strained smile. "But actually, it has been vague for a while. The job has been. overwhelming.” Samantha folded her arms, her eyes glittering with curiosity. "Overwhelming enough to forget our friendship anniversary?"Eva let out a sigh, carefully keeping her expression neutral. "I'm so sorry Sam, I'll make it up to you. I promise.” “Oh, you will.” Samantha said with a devilish smile spreading on her lips.“Uhm…excuse me?” “We are having dinner together tomorrow night to celebrate. And it's on you.” Samantha purred. Eva froze. “Dinner? Tomorrow? Uhm…“Don't you dare try to make up an excuse. Samantha narrowed her eyes. Eva laughed softly. “Chill, I was just thinking of the best venue.” Samantha smiled. “leave that to me. You just have to be there with your credit card. I'll text you the address.” Sh

"Eva." Samantha's voice was colder than the Antarctic ice, her gaze cutting through the air with razor-sharp precision. "I know it's you. Where's Ava?"Eva's body froze. Her head raced. Her heart boomed in her ears, drowning out the scurrying sounds of the restaurant. Every fiber in her body screamed at her to retreat, but she couldn't-not yet.“What do you mean, Sam?” Eva finally stuttered, forcing a smile that came off a little too tight. “I'm right here.”She slumped back in her chair, crossing her arms. A smirk danced across her lips, running a shiver down Eva's spine. "Don't play dumb with me," she said. "I've known Ava since we were kids. I could spot her from a mile away. And you…" she waved her fork at Eva. "you're not her.The bottom fell out of Eva's stomach. In her panic, it felt like her throat was inflating in her neck, choking her. Shawn's voice came down the hall as he entered the living room, briefcase in hand.Eva sat cross-legged on the couch, knees supporting a slightly tilted-over sketchpad. She looked up startled-she hadn't heard him come in. "I said I wasn't feeling great," she rapidly said, her voice defensive.“You don't look sick," Shawn said, one eyebrow shooting upward as he swept a look over the neat stack of sketches beside her and the soft glowing laptop on the coffee table. "And this doesn't exactly look like resting to me.""It's work," Eva returned succinctly. "I can work from home."Shawn gave a deep, public sigh as he dropped his briefcase onto the chair beside him. "Eva, I know you are upset about the dog. It is okay to take a day to grieve, but don't let it affect you too much.” Eva's body straightened. He thinks this is about the imaginary dog? "Eva decided to stay abroad," Mr. Wadsley said suddenly, his voice even but forcefully calm. His eyes remained steadily upon Shawn. "She wanted to build herself up more and explore her passions. It's something we decided to support because, well, she's always been the introverted one."Shawn blinked, surprised. "Oh. I didn't know she was staying long-term. I was looking forward to getting to know the other side of my wife." The disappointment was evident in his tone.Mrs. Wadsley reached in warmly to smooth the exchange. "You know how Eva is. She's always been the more private one. Why don't you two stay for dinner here? It has certainly been a while since we have seen you.”Shawn nodded and slightly furrowed his brow. "That does sound nice. Thanks."As they went back into the sitting room, Eva tugged on Shawn's sleeve. Eva's palms were slick as she approached the office door. The heavy oak loomed larger than normal, it seemed to know what was beyond it. She did stop for a second to steady her breathing. She could do this. Had to do it, too. She hauled a last in-draft of breath, grasped the cool doorknob and stepped inside."Well, if isn't the woman of the hour," Samantha said, kicking back in Eva's chair and crossing her legs, a smug smile spreading across her face. "Took you long enough."Eva came into the room, forcing herself to be calm as she shut the door behind her. "Samantha," she said, the even tone of her voice masked the racing of her heart- "why are you in my office?"Samantha nodded to the chair opposite her. "Why don't you take a seat? We have to have a little talk."Eva was defiant, but somehow swayed across, her heels clomping against the hardwood floor. "I have a busy day today. "Ready for another tiring day, Mrs. Darlington?" Shawn teased, opening the car door for Eva, a wide grin on his face.Eva forced a small, weak smile and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. "Do i have a choice.” She replied in a tired tone. She stepped out of the car, holding her purse close to her side. The air was cool that morning, though the weight inside her chest had her feeling constricted. About to return to Shawn's cheerful banter, she suddenly froze.Ava leaned against her car casually, that bright smile of hers blazing like a spotlight toward them as she stood in the parking lot."Good morning!" Ava called cheerfully, her voice as sweet as sugar as she sauntered toward them.Eva's heart quickened as she found herself clutching at her purse. ‘What is she doing here?’"Eva!" Just as Shawn and Eva sat in the living room, chatting over their evening tea, the doorbell jingled. Their attention went to the main entrance as the sound came up. Madam Tess, ambled toward answering the door grumbling discontentedly with the uninvited guest. Eva's heart leaped high-she had been uptight all day, waiting for Ava's next move. She tightened her grip on the teacup while her stomach churned. “Who could this be at this hour? Are you expecting someone?”"Relax," Shawn said, chuckling at her rigid pose. "It's probably a deliveryman; someone must have sent something.” Then they heard the door open and Madam Tess's voice full of surprise: "Oh! Miss Eva, what a lovely surprise."Eva's blood froze. She put down her tea on the table, trembling; that rattling sound very loud against the stillness of the room. ‘What's she doing here?’Shawn's head jolted, a brilliant smile lighting up his face. "I'm fine," she said, but her tone wasn’t convincing. And dismissed her.She was not okay. The storm brewing in her mind for the last couple of days crashed on her ceaselessly. Every time she met Shawn's gaze, her gut roiled with overwhelming guilt and hurt seriously gnawing at her insides. "They think they can control me" Ava growled low in her throat, pacing the small hotel room. Her heels clicked against the floor, her anger simmering, threatening to boil over at any moment. She came to a stop, hands clenching on the edge of the desk in front of her. Her reflection stared back at her from the mirror over it, green eyes wild with frustration and hurt. And in Ava's head, those words re-echoed in her mind in an endless feedback-the words deeply engraving in her mind one word after another."You're a disappointment. You dragged the family name in the mud. You've done enough damage.”She snorted, her voice thick with resentful arguments so bitter. "I've done enough damage? Really?" Ava shook her head, the laugh that finally came out seemingly cutting her throat. "Eva stole everything from me, and I am the one that's done enough damage? It was injustice, seared in fire, and she found no room for reason. Eva slumped onto the couch in the living room. Immediately, she was convulsed by unchained sobs as her composure snapped into a thousand pieces. Hiding her face between shaking hands, that tidal wave of reality engulfed her-cold-blooded betrayal by a sister."I just can't believe it," Eva whispered, her voice breaking at last. "She's going to ruin everything… everything I worked hard to build. She'll destroy my life.”Eleanor fell on her knees beside her daughter and laid a reassuring hand on her knee. "Eva, sweetheart, don't cry; we'll work this out.”"Sort this out?" Eva's head jerked up, her tear-streaked face contorted in a grimace of anguish. "How, Mother? Ava's hell-bent on taking Shawn from me. You think she'll stop after what she just pulled? She won't!"Richard was pacing furiously beside the fireplace, hands clasped tightly behind his back. Ava drove up the driveway in Eva's sleek car up to the mansion looming ahead-the Wadsley mansion. Her fingers around the steering wheel tightened with each second passing while her heart was pounding, yet not a ripple crossed her face. She didn't want to show them that she was scared. Inside, Eva stood at her window in her silk robe and watched the car pull in. There she saw her twin sister driving in behind the wheel of her car. She felt her blood boil as she stormed out of the house, heels clattering on the marble floor.Scarcely had Ava stepped out of the car when Eva descended upon her, a mask of fury upon her face.“How dare you?" Eva's voice cut through cold morning air. Thin curtain shades allowed morning sun to streak the room in patches of gold. Ava stirred, weighed down by exhaustion, yet her mind was in a marathon leading to the opening of her eyes. And then all the pieces fit together-the way Shawn had touched her, the things he said, the manner in which he had looked at her like she was the only female on this earth. She turned her head slightly, and her gaze fell on Shawn's sleeping form beside her, with his arm possessively flung across her waist. 'It really happened' -the thought slammed her heart against her chest. The phone lying next to the bed slicing through the silence of the room. She carefully reached to get it-not wanting Shawn to wake. The screen blinked through texts and calls-all from Eva and her mom and dad."Ava, call me right this minute!""What the hell are you doing with Shawn?""Do you know what kind of mess you're putting us in?" Ava would do nothing to hurt you. She is your sister—"Don't say that!" Eva snapped, whirling to glare at her mother. "She is not the Ava we used to know. She's selfish, conniving, and… and she doesn't care who she hurts anymore. She left Shawn on the altar, remember? She didn't want him, and now she's back acting like she can just waltz into my life and take everything from me!"The scowl on Eleanor's face softened to concern. "She's still your twin, Eva.
