"You're not going to believe what I just found out."

Sam slipped into the chair opposite Ava in the seclusion of the corner of the café and said, in her low, piercing voice, whipping off her sunglasses. Her eyes blazed bright; inside their sheen, excitement twisted.

Ava had not lifted her gaze from the cappuccino, in front of her, and gently turning the liquid round in the top of the coffee in a giddying sweep of her eyes.

She breathed deep. "This had better be good, Samantha. You sounded so urgent, and i had to leave everything behind and rush here.."

Samantha smirks and fiddles with her coat for a second before leaning in to speak. She speaks just loud enough to be above a whisper. “It's about Eva.”

Ava's hand freezes mid-stir. Her heart is kicking against her ribs. "What about her?"

Samantha watched Ava's reaction with her head cocked to one side, like a cat in a trap waiting for the mouse. "I saw her today," she said, her voice drawing out the sentence for maximum effect. "At a h

"May we talk?"Ava stood at the door of Eva's office, clutching the door handle so firmly that her knuckles had whitened. She had spent all morning rehearsing what she would say, her mind playing different scenarios. Now that she actually was here, face to face with her twin sister, words felt heavier in her mouth.Eva didn't even acknowledge her existence. She sat at her desk, fingers flying across the keyboard of her laptop in that known pattern, like Ava wasn't even there."I'm busy."Ava had swallowed and plastered a bright smile on her face as she stepped into the room. "Please, Eva, just give me a few minutes. I won't take much of your time."Eva let out a soft huff and didn't look up. "What is it that you want, Ava?"For half a second, Ava didn't say another word, walking closer on heels clicking against the tile floor. That room was almost choking with what had been unsaid and emotion left hanging in the balance."I want to make things right between us," Ava said softer now, a

“What the hell is this?" Richard Wadsley muttered under his breath for the third time and started scrutinizing the papers on his desk. The figures would just not make sense. Somewhere, it was missing something huge.He leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples. It wasn't any ordinary miscalculation. There was a screw-up with the money-a hole somewhere-and he couldn't find it. A cold creeping in his stomach started to churn as his gut felt told him this wasn't an accident. Somebody was playing a game with him, and he didn't like that one bit."Richard?”His wife, Eleanor, came into the study, furrowing her brow. She had watched him for roughly an hour as, with every passing second, his face darkened, his fingers drumming anxious rhythms on the table."What's wrong?" she asked as she drew closer. He snorted loudly. "I just don't know yet. Something from these reports simply isn't quite adding up properly."Eleanor laid a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "Perhaps it's just some tiny

“Is this what you call taking responsibility?”Richard Wadsley's voice shook the walls of his office. His fist hit forcefully on the mahogany desk, displacing a stack of financial statements across the polished surface. With her nails gnawing into her skin, Ava was frozen in front of him, her hands clenched behind her. She knew she was in trouble by the way he spoke to her on the phone, but not this. She was confused didn't understand how the number and financial statement were messed up, and she had no excuses or explanation for all the fallout. Her father's eye pierced her. "Do you even grasp the mess we are in? " Ava gulped down the ball building in her tummy. "Daddy, I---" With a sharp hand movement, Richard cut her down with a firm tone. “No, you listen. You pleaded for this charge. You told me you wanted to take full responsibility, and now, check this out! Shoving a file toward her, the red-circled numbers stood out like lacerations. The damages were enormous. Their Europe

"What's going on, Shawn? What's with all these disasters?”The words cut through the heavy tension in Henry Darlington's office. Barely inside, Shawn Darlington was paralyzed on a spot by his father's frigid voice. Henry's gaze was a mask of patient rage behind his great mahogany desk. The evidence of a disaster developing under Shawn's oversight, along with financial statements and customer agreements, was strewn across the desk. Though Shawn knew this discussion had to happen, it still does not help. His pulse throbbed in his ears, and his stomach was tight in coils. He'd been scrambling for answers the last few days, but every road led to a dead end. He took a deep breath and walked further into the office. “Sit.” Henry's voice was without warmth. Henry had been running Darlington Enterprises with firm leadership since his father handed over to him, and now he was gazing at his only son as though he were a major letdown. With slightly mildew, Shawn swallowed and slumped into th

“You still haven't changed your decision?”With arms crossed and leaning back in his chair, Ryan had a calm but strong voice. He looked Eva up so intently that she slumped a little in her chair. Away from searching eyes and ears, they were seated in a darkly lit private lounge. Eva has asked to meet to talk about the company crisis.Eva sipped her coffee before looking him right in the eye. She confessed, "yes, i have no other option." Ryan shook his head and exhaled through his mouth. "You have options, Eva. You decided not to go for it.” Eva's lips were sealed in a pout. She didn't want to argue with him, not when she had more important issues to focus on. "Let's concentrate on the investigation, that's the main reason why we are here.” Ryan sighed and leaned forward. “Sure. Fill me in.” Eva exhaled deeply and recited everything, the drug trafficking charges, the confiscated jewelry shipment, and Richard's mounting irritability. With a blank face, Ryan paid close attentiveness.

Sitting in his office, Henry Darlington's voice was cool and clipped, “We found the goods.” His fingers rapidly drummed against his desk. As he delivered the information to his son. The atmosphere around him was heavy with anxiety. His hands balled into fists, and Shawn Darlington stood across him. He had hardly slept in the aftermath of the Darlington Enterprises incident. The lost delivery, the disappeared cash, the client who cancelled, it was a never-ending nightmare. Shawn swallowed. "Really? Where?”Henry made eye contact, his piercing hazel eyes aflame with relief mixed with rage. "An empty warehouse located near downtown. An hour ago, we received a heads-up.”Shawn breathed out. Inside him battled respite, fury, and suspicion. Someone had taken their delivery and thrown it in a disused warehouse; it made no sense. Apart from a blunder, there was little more to this. “Should I inform the authorities?” Shawn asked. Henry waved his hand, “No, I already have. They will be the

“Hi, Can I come in?” Ava's voice cut through the silence in Eva's office.Eva lifted her head to see Ava standing at the entrance of her office. Her eyebrows rose in shock as she looked at her sister. Ava never visited her office if she could avoid it, and when she did, they always talked strictly about business, which sometimes ended in disagreement. But Ava's expression was totally different this time around. She looked vulnerable and calm. "What do you want?" Eva asked with a serious tone, taking her attention back to her work.Ava breathed slowly, trying to relax and choose her words carefully. "To thank you."Eva's head sank. "For what?""For what you did to the shipping case," Ava said. "I know you didn't have to do it, but you did. I just… I just wanted to thank you for it."Eva folded her arms and sat back in her chair. "I didn't do it for you."Ava attempted a smile. "I know."There was a heavy silence of things unspoken between them.Eva couldn't help but be amazed at Ava

“Pick up the damn phone, Shawn.”Ryan swore, pacing beside his car as he dialed Shawn contact perhaps the tenth time that day.But it keeps ringing without an answer. He got back into his car and glared at the screen before he sent him a text.Ryan: Call me. It's an emergency.Several minutes went by and he was still not calling him back.Ryan clenched his teeth. He'd known Shawn wouldn't be some laid-back type of individual, but this was more important than whatever he was busy with. His thumbs hovered above the phone screen as a plan formed in his head. It was insane, manipulative to say the least, but desperate men do desperate things and this was a desperate moment for him.He smiled when he sent another text message.Ryan: Eva tried to commit suicide. She's in the ER at the state hospital. He knew Shawn wouldn't be able to ignore that message. **********Ryan was crouched over his car in the hospital car park, arms crossed frowning at the door like a hawk. “Lets see what you are up to, Ava.” Ryan said under his breath, hands on the steering wheel as his eyes dart merrily between the rearview mirror and the restaurant across the road. The engine of his car idled gently, its low hum hardly noticeable over the thrashing in his chest. Almost an hour had passed since he had been sitting there, his head turned on Ava, who was inside the café stirring her unattended coffee. His phone buzzed on the passenger seat, and he grabbed it quickly. It was a message from Shawn. Shawn: "Keep your eyes on her; we must figure out where she's taking that money to.”Ryan exhaled, his jaw tightened. He thought relentlessly, typing back a brief response. Ryan: "I'm still watching. She hasn't made a move yet." He set the phone down and tapped his fingers nervously on the top of the steering wheel. Two half-million-dollar withdrawals, and she's merely sipping coffee? It didn't seem right. There's something up.Ava rose from the chair moments later, her chai

Shawn's voice was quiet but fraught with stress as he slumped on the mahogany desk, his jaw clenched with each word;"Are you quite certain about this, Ryan? ".His fingers drummed on the polished surface of the table, a perturbed beat that exposed his anxiety as he sat across from him. “I wouldn't have not come to you if I wasn't. Ava is hiding something, I've been investigating and watching her myself.” Shawn's eyebrows furrowed tightly. The poorly lit study gave them privacy, its thick drapes shutting out the rest of the world, but it did little to relax the weight bearing on Shawn. “You're claiming she poisoned Eva, Ryan. I still can't believe Ava would do that. Even Eva doesn't believe it. Because Ava has no reason to do that.” Ryan let out a nasty sigh, anger rippling across him. "I know you both are finding it hard to believe, but according to Eva's testimony, she is our only suspect.Ryan narrowed his eyes at Shawn, who looked disturbed. “Eva told me she overheard Ava's conve

Ava murmured over the phone, voice chilly and indifferent, "I can't come today either."Shawn's exasperated voice came over the speaker to say, "Ava, what's going on? You keep giving excuses not to come home. Talk to me if something is bothering you.”"Shawn, I'm not giving excuses. I have a lot of work to do and my parents' place is the closest, because I've been working late these days. Please try to understand. " Ava hung up without waiting for his response and flung her phone onto her disorganized desk. The setting sun had long gone down, so Wadsleys Jewels were gently aglow from the office lights. Scattered about Ava's desk were financial records and client files, but none of them really had her attention. She was off, trapped in a hurricane of anxiety and stress. Trying to relieve the increasing headache, she rubbed her temples. She didn't bother to check when her phone buzzed again. She already knew it was Shawn.Eva and her mother had also been trying to talk to her, but th

"Miss Wadsley, you must tell us everything you remember. It will be very useful for the investigation.” Detective Harris' voice cut through the heavy tension of the hospital room. Eva moved a little on the hospital bed, and the sterile sheet felt rigid and itchy against her skin. Eleanor Wadsley, her mother, sat on the edge of Evas bed with Eva hand clenched in hers like a lifeline. Richard Wadsley paced like an anguished lion across the room, anger seeping from every powerful stomp crashing across the ceramic floor. Shawn was standing stiffly in the corner beside Ryan, with his arms crossed over his chest and his eyes fixed on Eva's pallid face, his jaw was clenched, and the muscles twitched gently. Every moment of her silence only appeared to drive the cyclone building beyond his chilling eyes. Ryan squirmed next to him, rubbing his neck back and forth; his irritation practically evident throughout the questioning. "Miss Wadsley," Detective Harris said with a firm but gentle

Apart from the faint beep of the heart monitor, the hospital room was eerily quiet. Sitting in the chair next Eva's bed, Shawn watched her weak body resting against the white hospital sheets his fingers interlocked. Though the steady rise and fall of her chest comforted him, it did not lighten the suffocating weight of emotions he felt. He had been sitting there for hours, waiting for her to wake up, waiting for a solution. The doctor had told him that she'll regain consciousness soon. Eleanor had left a few moments ago telling him that she had to make food for Eva when she woke up. She thanked him for staying beside her. He was lost in the memories of the past they shared together, the betrayal, lies and the pain of their divorce. The news of her pregnancy was the shock of it all. Resting his elbows on his knees, he sighed deeply and his fingers twitched. Since Ryan laid everything out, his head has been spinning with questions. ‘Why didn't she tell me?’He ought to have realized

Ava's eyes were filled with fury as she walked completely into the apartment; she still couldn't believe what was before her eyes. Startled by the unexpected interruption, Samantha jumped from the sofa. It was irritation rather than fear that swished over her face; she knew Ava would come screaming at her door, sooner or later. Ava took a deep breath. “What is Norman Darlington doing here?” Her eyes returned to Samantha, mock screaming on her like a tidal wave. "Sam, I asked what is going on here?” Crossing her legs and sitting back against the couch, Samantha smirked. "I was wondering how long it would take you to solve it.” She said smoothly.Ava clenches her fists. "You have been working together?” Samantha breathed out deeply, head tilted. “Why else would he be here? Quit asking obvious questions Ava, you look stupid.” A wave of sickness swept Ava. She trusted Samantha. They've been best friends since middle school. Samantha made her believe she was helping her and was the o

Shawn drove behind his parent's car as they drove into the parking space of their mansion. He knew his father was trying to keep his cool and not cause a scene in front of the Wadsleys when they almost lost their daughter. His father went in without waiting for him. Shawn took a deep breath before walking in to face his father. “Shawn, what in the world is happening? What was all that?” Henry Darlington asked with barely contained anger. Shawn tried to speak and calm his father down, but unfortunately, he had no words. He understood what his father felt, but he also felt the same way and didn't understand the mess he just got into. His thoughts replayed the doctor's words and Ryan's words. ‘Eva was truly pregnant, and it was his.And now his father is paranoid and angry about the fact that both twins are pregnant with his child. Shawn shrugged wearily. How exactly was he supposed to deal with this? He thought finding Eva unconscious in her office was worse until the doctor co

With clenched fists, Shawn strolled the space by the window. He wasn't saying much, he just wanted Eva to regain consciousness. She still has a lot to answer for, but the memories of how he found her almost lifeless on the floor made his heart sink. Ava went to sit and was stiff in the chair, hands shaking and rolled into fists in her lap. Ryan stood with his back against the wall, his mask like face dull, but the jaw clenched spoke volumes. Richard Wadsley and Eleanor Wadsley were seated together, their distorted heads twisted with horror and fury. Daine Darlington and Henry Darlington sat quietly, their red eyes flicking every which way. Eleanor shot from the chair, her voice quivering on the razor's ranks, "Doctor, what's the update now. How's my daughter?” Richard's deep voice asked, "Is she awake?" The doctor scanned the room. "Are you all the patient's family?” Shawn glared. "Why does any of this matter? Tell us what happened to her.” The doctor stopped and then gave a no
