20. Why The Sudden Change of Heart?

Avery’s POV

He paced relentlessly, a caged predator in his own right, each stride echoing ominously across the room. For a solid five minutes, he avoided any connection with my eyes, his gaze fixed on some unseen point in the distance. Rooted to my spot, I felt like a small creature under the scrutiny of a wild animal; any sudden move from me might just unleash the storm brewing within him.

Abruptly, his pacing ceased. He planted himself firmly in front of me, his features set in a mask of icy detachment. "You will be locked in this room until tomorrow," he declared, his voice cold and unyielding as steel. "You will be quiet and stay inside the whole time without a sound."

His words struck me, leaving me momentarily breathless, too stunned to form a coherent response. Locked in a room for twelve hours? That was the extent of his punishment? It seemed almost too benign, suspiciously simple, and devoid of the pain I had braced myself to confront.
