I was dancing in a garden chasing butterflies when a crashing sound made me jump out of bed bringing my fantasy to an abrupt end.
“Good morning, my lady.” Greeted an unfamiliar voice.
As if the king-sized bed and antique walls weren’t enough, standing at the edge of the bed was a young girl in a black and white dress carrying a drum.
“Who are you?” I asked, looking around the strange room.
“I am Martha, your maid, responsible for tending to your needs.”
I look at her as if she speaks German. This whole scenario just screams that I may have been kidnapped. I run to the window to escape, but I’m not prepared for what awaits me next. I look out from a very large castle, surrounded by similar structures, all seeming ancient and mystical.
The scenes from this morning cloud my memory and everything seems to make sense.
“You should get dressed, young lady,” Martha says from behind, “The queen is waiting.”
After passing through various corridors and corners, we finally reach the queen’s chambers. Martha motions for me to go in, which I do reluctantly.
It’s the same woman from this morning, I recognize her at first glance. She sits majestically on a throne-shaped chair.
“What? “You’re not laughing anymore,” she says in the same high-pitched tone that made me lose my mind. I want to burst out in laughter, but I manage to stop myself.
“I’m sorry for my behavior earlier,” I say in a soft tone I didn’t know I possessed until now.
“You don’t seem sorry at all.”
She’s not wrong. I wonder if she can see through me.
“Where are your manners, young lady? Did your mother not teach you to bow before the queen?”
I immediately lower my head, but an idea comes to me, I look up.
“You’re right my queen, my mother didn’t give me any lessons on how to be a true lady let alone a queen...” I say pitifully hoping to earn her sympathy.
“I’m just a girl who has spent her whole life in a small bakery. I’m afraid I will only bring shame to the royal family.
“You must think you have nothing to lose.”
There is a hint of threat in her tone.
“I have a question for you.”
I look up with interest.
“Are you a virgin?” She questions without even blinking.
I pause and consider an appropriate response to the old-fashioned question.
If I say no, will she let me go?
“I suggest you think carefully before giving me an answer,” she warns.
“You might think you can avoid this by saying no. Yes, the engagement will be canceled, but who do you think will bear the consequences?”
“Your baker father or your dear mother who was once a princess.”
I receive her message loud and clear, in the end, my family’s survival depends on me.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I’m going to send assassins after your parents say no. “She laughs it off, “No one does that anymore, it’s just according to the rules Valérie will be whipped a hundred times with a wooden stick for not having raised her daughter right.”
“So before you say something you might regret, remember that it’s your mother who takes the blame.”
I swallow hard and feel anger rising in my veins.
Right now I feel so helpless and useless, forced to dance to her tune.
“I am a virgin,” I reply shamelessly and I feel a part of me breaking from the inside.
She smiled as if satisfied with my answer: “Dr. Jane will be here soon to confirm that you are dismissed.”
Dr. Jane pulled up like the queen had said and she also stuck a hand in my vagina. I felt so violated but I couldn’t even protest because I remembered that mom would be the one punished so I quietly sucked it up.
As if Jane’s assault wasn’t enough, I had to pace around with a breakable ceramic plate on my head. Every time I broke a plate, I was hit on the palm with a wooden ruler.
The class was led by an old woman who was even stricter than the queen. My body begged for rest, but the old woman didn’t seem to stop. She told me to move on.
Tired, I thought of an excuse to go to the bathroom. Martha led the way as I was a stranger in the huge mansion and I managed to sneak away while she wasn’t looking.
I kept cutting through different corners until I came to an exit that took me outside. I could tell I was in the garden by the flowers planted in every corner. I ran around like an excited child, forgetting the harsh memories of the day.
“Naomi, right?”
I turned around and saw Ruben standing behind me.
“I didn’t think I’d see you again so soon,” He said mischievously.
Funny when this was all his fault, if he hadn’t reported me to the Queen, she wouldn’t have sought me out and I wouldn’t be here to take these lessons. It was all his fault, I wanted to make a sarcastic comment but I remembered I was in the palace, on his territory.
“Good morning, Prince Reuben.” I greeted him politely with a slight bow and he burst out laughing.
“I can not believe.” Between laughs, he said, “Where did that wild girl from the other day go?”
It was hard, but I swallowed. I have to get out of here. I turned to walk away, but he pulled my arm, forcing me to look at him.
“I told you you’d regret it, didn’t I?”
Fuck this!
I pushed his hand away and drew closer meeting his gaze with fire in my eyes.
“The only person who will live the rest of their life in regret would be you if you ever make the mistake of letting me be your queen.”
He didn’t seem shocked by my threat, he was more intrigued.
“Is this so?”
His reaction didn’t faze me the man seemed like a breeding ground for trouble.
“I can’t guarantee that I will ever return to my family in one piece, but I can assure you of one th
ing.”
“If you ever make the mistake of marrying me, I will make your life a living hell like you made mine.”
I’ve spent a week in this palace, and I still can’t get used to their way of waking me up.“Is the drum supposed to be an alarm or something?” I ask, getting up from bed irritated.“I’m sorry, ma’am, but these are the Queen’s orders,” Martha says, bowing her head apologetically. For the first time, I felt the need to sit on that throne. I can’t wait to take her crown and place and finally put her where she belongs. Too bad there’s still a long way to go.“Where is the king?” I wonder out loud.“Forgive me, my lady,” Martha begins, and I know she wants to scold me again, but in the most polite way possible. “But it is forbidden to speak of the king. Please don’t ask any more questions regarding the king in the future.”What an exaggerated response. I sometimes wonder if people here even touch grass; they act like it’s the Middle Ages.“Okay,” I nod in response and head towards the bathroom when Martha blocks my path.“Today there will be a small gathering to celebrate the return of Pri
I whispered for him to put me down, but he ignored me and carried me straight to my room. Once we arrived, he gently placed me on the bed while Martha watched in amazement from behind. I was just as confused as she was. What had gotten into him? Why was he suddenly being kind? Despite my questions, I was grateful that he had chosen to protect me from his siblings. After settling me on the bed, Reuben took a seat next to me, and I could tell he had something to say. He turned to Martha and demanded a first aid kit, prompting her to quickly leave the room to fulfill his request. I braced myself for what was to come, unsure if it would be good or bad news."First of all, I'm sorry for what happened tonight," he began. But I chose not to accept his apology. "If you hadn't told your mom about me, we wouldn't be in this situation. So, I decline your apology."Reuben didn't seem bothered. "The truth is, I don't care if you accept my apology or not," he replied in his usual arrogant tone.Of
Belen and Jade remained silent as they forcefully pulled me out of bed. I looked to Martha for assistance, but she deliberately avoided eye contact, indicating that she was also powerless in this situation."I'm not even properly dressed," I protested, hoping to find a way out of whatever they had planned."Don't worry about that, we'll take care of it," Jade replied with a mischievous smile. With no other choice, I reluctantly followed along.True to her word, Jade made sure to dress me up. However, I was far from satisfied with the outfit I was forced into, but I kept my complaints to myself. The dress was so long that it practically swept the floor, with sleeves that threatened to engulf me entirely. I've never been one to dress provocatively, but this was just too much. Even nuns don't dress like this because I could barely breathe and this seemed to please both princesses as they stared at me in awe. "Don't you know that modesty is expected of you as a queen?" Jade remarked, not
A chilling silence hung in the air, and it was no surprise that my actions caught them off guard. However, I had reached my limit. I was tired of being bullied and insulted to my face. If I didn't stand up for myself now, who knows what they would do next.It only took a few seconds for her to recover from the shock. She got up and wiped the remaining juice off her face."Are you out of your mind?" Belen's harsh tone grabbed my attention, but before I could respond, I felt a slap on my cheek. I didn't need to guess who it came from. Without hesitation, I returned the blow, making sure to gather all the strength within me to leave a mark.Silence fell upon us once again. Blondie blinked, too stunned to speak. Jade got up and approached me. It was clear what her intentions were. As soon as she reached me, she raised her hand to strike, but I caught it mid-air."Don't you dare," I warned, refusing to let go. My grip was so tight that she couldn't break free, no matter how hard she tried.
After being whipped until I blacked out, I regained consciousness to find myself back in the comfort of my room. I was lying face down, unable to move due to the stinging pain in my buttocks."My lady, you're awake," Martha's voice came from behind me. I tried to nod, but the sharp pain shot up my spine, causing me to cry out."I'm sorry that I couldn't protect you," Martha sniffled. I couldn't see her face, but I could sense her tears."It's not your fault, Martha. You're not the one who did this to me," I reassured her."But I stood by and watched it happen," guilt was evident in her tone. If only I could embrace her and let her know how grateful I was to have her in my life. If my maid had been like the others, evil and plotting my downfall, I might have given up a long time ago."Let me apply balm to your wounds."My skirt was lifted, and I didn't object. A cold sensation spread over my wounds, causing some pain but also relieving it slightly."Can you get me some water?" I asked
It had been a whole week since I endured the brutal flogging, and although it took some time for my wounds to heal, the pain was gradually subsiding. The queen had exempted me from attending classes and participating in any activities, confining me to my room for recovery.Giselle made a point to visit me every day, despite my clear indication that I wasn't interested in being friends. I couldn't help but wonder why she persisted in wanting to befriend someone like me. Not that there was anything inherently wrong with me, but the people in this place were not fond of forming close relationships with someone of mixed heritage.Martha informed me that Giselle's father held a prominent position in the royal family as the king's uncle, and he was one of the influential figures who held power. Despite her privileged background, Giselle didn't flaunt it. Martha described her as humble, and even though she associated with Belen and her group, she stood out as someone unique."Mi mi!" Giselle
After my wounds had healed, classes resumed and Madam Florence became even stricter with me. I could sense that she had a problem, but she wouldn't say it. I wondered if one of the girls I had beaten up the other day was her daughter."Stand straight!" she commanded, slapping my back with a ruler. I glared at her, but she raised her eyebrow as if challenging me to say something. I quickly closed my mouth, reminding myself to endure it. I remembered Reuben's words - there will come a time when none of them will be able to treat me like this, but for now, I have to rely on their mercy."It's been a while, Florence," a familiar voice said. I turned my head to see Giselle approaching with a smile, but a slap on my back forced me to face forward. "Focus!" the woman yelled."Giselle," she said in a friendly tone I had never heard from her before. Pulling her into a hug, and I was surprised that she could do more than just scream and yell. "Indeed it has. How is your mother? I heard she hasn
Normally, I was unable to leave the palace, but thanks to Giselle's influence, I was able to pass through the gates without any trouble. Belen and the others had already left, assuming that we knew the location of the bakery, which, of course, belonged to my family. I was both excited and nervous to see what kind of surprise they had planned."It's alright," Giselle reassured me as she skillfully navigated through the busy roads. "I'm here with you, nothing will go wrong. Besides, your mother used to be a Princess, right? Even though she isn't anymore, they still have to show respect.""I hope so," I silently prayed in my mind. After being stuck in traffic for what felt like hours, we finally arrived at the street leading to the bakery. As we approached, a line had formed outside, and a smile spread across my face. Business was still thriving, and I couldn't wait to see my parents. I had missed them so much.Stepping out of the car, we walked inside. The first person I laid eyes on wa
lThe weight of Demetrius's words hit me like a ton of bricks. My heart raced, and a sense of dread settled in the pit of my stomach. I couldn't believe what I had just revealed to him in my moment of desperation. I had unknowingly given him a weapon to use against me and Reuben."You can't be serious," I whispered, my voice trembling. "You wouldn't stoop so low as to deceive the Queen and claim my child as your own."Demetrius's smile widened, his eyes gleaming with malicious delight. "Oh, but I would, Naomi. I would do anything to secure my place on the throne. And what better way than to present the Queen with an heir, one that she believes is mine."Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized the extent of Demetrius's wickedness. He was willing to manipulate everyone, even his own mother, just to fulfill his lust for power."But the Queen will see through your lies," I pleaded, my voice barely above a whisper. "She knows the truth, and she will never accept you as the rightful King."
The events of the past few hours came rushing back to me, and I felt a wave of fear wash over me. Demetrius had captured me once again, and I was at his mercy. Before I could gather my thoughts, the sound of the door creaking open filled the room. Demetrius stepped in, his eyes filled with a sadistic gleam. My heart pounded in my chest as he approached me, his presence filling the room with a suffocating aura."Well, well, well," Demetrius sneered, his voice dripping with malice. "Look who's finally awake. Did you miss me, Naomi?"I shrank back, trying to create as much distance between us as possible. "Demetrius, please, let me go. I beg you. There's nothing between us. I want to be free."Demetrius chuckled darkly, his voice laced with contempt. "Oh, Naomi, you always did know how to make me laugh. But you see, you're mine now. And I won't let you slip away again."Tears welled up in my eyes as I pleaded with him, my voice trembling. "Please, Demetrius, I'm begging you. Think of the
Chapter 156Jade pleaded with me to reconsider my decision, I could feel my resolve weakening. His words echoed in my mind, reminding me of the love and happiness I had shared with Reuben. But deep down, I knew that returning to the palace was not the right path for me or my child."Jade, please understand," I pleaded, my voice trembling. "I can't go back. I can't live a life that isn't true to myself. And I can't bear to grow up in a world of duty and tradition."Jade's eyes filled with tears, and he reached out to gently touch my arm. "Naomi, I can't force you to do anything you don't want to do. But please, consider the consequences of your decision. Reuben loves you, and he wants to be a part of your life."I nodded, my heart heavy with the weight of my choices. "I understand, Jade. But for now, I need to do what I believe is best for myself and Please, respect my decision and don't come back."Jade's expression was filled with a mix of sadness and understanding. He nodded slowly,
It had been two weeks since I left the palace and settled down in the bakery with my parents and sister, Salie. Life had taken a drastic turn, and while I missed Rueben dearly, I knew that leaving was the right decision. The weight of tradition and duty had become too heavy to bear, and I needed time and space to sort through my emotions. But lately, something unusual has been happening to me. I had been feeling nauseous in the mornings, and my appetite had changed. The thought crossed my mind that I might be pregnant, but it seemed impossible. Rueben and I had never been intimate more than once, and I couldn't fathom how it could have happened quickly. The morning sickness persisted, and I couldn't shake off the worry that gnawed at the back of my mind. I confided in Salie, who listened attentively and offered her support."Naomi, it's possible that it's just a stomach bug or something you ate," Salie reassured me, her voice filled with concern. "But if you're really worried, maybe y
Surprised by my mother's statement, I turned to face her, confusion evident in my eyes. "Rachel?" I repeated, my voice laced with uncertainty. "But mother, I thought we agreed that it was best for Naomi and me to part ways."The Queen's expression softened, her eyes filled with a mix of understanding and determination. "Rueben, I understand your reasoning, and I respect your desire to do what is best for both yourself and Naomi. But we must also consider the implications of breaking the promise made by our forefathers. The council members and the people of our kingdom hold great importance to tradition and stability. By choosing Rachel as your queen, we can maintain that sense of continuity while also fostering a sense of unity among our people."I took a moment to absorb my mother's words, feeling torn between my own desires and the weight of responsibility placed upon me. The council members watched me expectantly, their eyes filled with a mix of hope and concern. But as I glanced a
Exhausted from the weight of my decisions, I decided to lie down for a quick nap. Sleep had eluded me in recent days, my mind consumed by thoughts of Naomi and the consequences of my actions. As I drifted off into slumber, I hoped for a moment of respite from my troubled thoughts. But even in my sleep, I found no solace. My dreams were plagued by visions of Naomi, her tear-streaked face filled with anger and rejection. I reached out to her, desperate to explain myself, but she turned away, her words echoing in my mind."No, Rueben. I can never forgive you. You have hurt me too deeply."My heart pounded in my chest as I jolted awake, my body covered in a cold sweat. The image of Naomi's tearful rejection lingered, haunting me even in the waking world. But as I blinked away the remnants of my dream, I realized I was not alone.Standing by my bedside was my younger brother, Jade, his concern evident in his eyes. Jade had always been the calm and level-headed one, a stark contrast to my i
As I turned to walk away from the queen, my heart heavy with the weight of my decisions, her voice cut through the air like a knife."Think, Rueben," she sneered. "Think about what you've done to that poor girl. You took her innocence and claimed not to know her. Do you honestly believe she would ever accept you back? Even if you were to beg on your knees, she would never be your betrothed again. You have lost, Rueben. You have lost everything."Her words pierced my soul, each one a painful reminder of the irreversible damage I had caused. The realization hit me like a tidal wave, and I stumbled back, feeling as though the ground beneath me was crumbling away. No, it couldn't be true. I couldn't have lost Naomi forever. I couldn't bear the thought of a life without her by my side, of never hearing her laughter or seeing her smile again. But deep down, I knew that the queen was right. I had betrayed Naomi in the worst possible way, and there was no coming back from that.Tears welled u
As I closed the curtains, blocking out the view of Naomi's house, I made a vow to myself. I would do whatever it took to earn her forgiveness, to prove that I had changed. It wouldn't be easy, and there were no guarantees that she would ever accept me back into her life. But I couldn't live with the regret of losing her without trying. But as the days turned into weeks, my frustration and anger began to consume me. I couldn't shake the image of Naomi's smiling face, her laughter echoing in my mind. It haunted me, a constant reminder of what I had lost.Unable to contain my emotions any longer, I found myself smashing things around my apartment. The anger and regret boiled inside me, fueling my destructive actions. It was as if the physical pain could somehow alleviate the emotional turmoil I was experiencing. But no matter how many things I broke, the pain remained. I couldn't escape the reality of what I had done to Naomi, the hurt I had caused. It was a heavy burden to bear, and I f
A few days had passed since the intense encounter with the reporters, and I was determined to move forward with my life. I had made the decision to take my younger sister, Salie, out for a day of shopping, hoping to distract ourselves from the chaos that had consumed our lives. As we walked through the bustling shopping mall, I couldn't help but feel a sense of freedom. The weight of the world seemed to lift off my shoulders, replaced by a newfound lightness. Salie skipped ahead of me, her laughter filling the air, and for a moment, I allowed myself to forget about the pain and betrayal that had plagued me.But as we turned a corner, my heart skipped a beat. There, standing in the middle of the mall, was Rueben, arm in arm with Rachel. My breath caught in my throat, and I felt a surge of anger and hurt wash over me. How dare he show his face after what he had done?Rueben's eyes met mine, and for a split second, I saw a flicker of remorse. He began to approach me, his lips parting to
