When Xavier storms into our hall, my Dad's phone drops from his hand at the sudden sight and he jumps up from his seat. Xavier's appearance is anything but expected or accepted for that matter.
He is wearing a black suit today with a black shirt underneath. His shoes are fashionable and they shine as he walks with long strides. He doesn't look at Dad because his eyes are on our ceiling, taking in the expensive decorations which we can no longer afford to change. I have never been to Xavier's house but by the way he keeps getting richer every day, I am sure it will be a stunning place to live in.
When his eyes move, they spot me on the first floor looking down upon him. His brown eyes scan my body like they always do, making me aware of why I avoid being alone with him in the first place.
I don't want to repeat the mistake we made once.
He looks ridiculously gorgeous. His black hair has a messy cut and his cheeks are adorned with light stubble. His jaw looks like it can be used as a sharp weapon—meant to kill. His lips are pillowy, calling to be kissed and I remember being kissed by them on the night of my eighteenth birthday—under the stairs, in this very house.
"What are you doing here?" Dad interrupts, the hint of anger clear in his voice.
"I was invited," Xavier replies without breaking his eye contact with me. I stare at him with the same confidence.
"Who invited you?"
This time Xavier does look at Dad. "Ask your daughter."
He walks towards the sofa and takes a seat, putting his legs over the tea-table in front and crossing them at the ankles. My Dad is a cleanliness freak and it is pretty clear that Xavier knows that too. He likes annoying Dad.
Xavier puts his arms behind his head as he watches Dad amusedly. Dad looks up at me, startled by the news. I roll my eyes and start to climb down the stairs.
"Did you invite him?" Dad questions when I reach the last step.
"Yes," I answer, not looking at Dad but at Xavier, who is staring at the chandelier with a disinterested look on his face.
"About what?" Dad asks but I ignore his question. Xavier looks between me and Dad, sensing the trigger in the air. "Harley, about what?" Dad repeats and I turn to him.
"Stop pretending to care when you don't. It's my business and it has nothing to do with you."
Dad's nostrils flare and I know that if Xavier wasn't in sight, he would have shouted at me. Dad likes to maintain his image in front of others, especially his enemies and Xavier is the emperor of his enemies.
A little part of me is sorry for making Dad feel that way. His reason for hating Xavier is genuine—that guy is the reason why he lost his beloved daughter, But that doesn't justify his mistreatment of me. I deserve his love too even though I understand why he feels such resentment towards me.
"Fine, do whatever you want to but be ready before the Senator arrives," Dad huffs.
His phone rings just in time and I see that it is Senator Campbell himself in the caller id. Dad eyes me as he receives it and starts talking. He throws Xavier a dirty look before walking away. I stare at his parting figure as he walks out of the door and into our garden feeling sorry for both him and me for what we had done to our relationship in the last four years. Mom is the one who is holding us together and it is only because Dad loves Mom.
"That's your revenge face, blondie." Xavier's voice makes me withdraw my eyes from Dad and I find him close to me.
I am left unguarded suddenly, the proximity making my body instantly alert itself to his closeness. His eyes are on me; the dark chocolaty irises fixed on my blueish ones.
I take a step back only to place my foot on the edge of the step behind me. I slip and he catches me in his arms, preventing my fall with his hands around my waist. I grip his arm tightly, digging my nails into his bulging biceps, as I balance myself. My heart races at my close save from a potentially bad fall and I close my eyes, sighing in relief.
"Thank you, God," I murmur.
"Not God, nemesis. I think you know my name pretty well," Xavier whispers in my ear, his lips grazing my neck softly, making my body tingle in response. "What's my name?"
I pull back a little to look at him. He has a small smile on his face, a cunning smile meant to mock me. As I glare at him, he returns my glare by stealing a glance at my lips. He trails his tongue above his lower lip as his hand presses against my waist, bringing our bodies closer together until we are pressed together. He is way taller than me and I feel like a child every time he holds me that way. It is like he wants to prove that he can always dominate me when it comes to physical confrontations.
Accidentally of course
I smirk, letting my hand move to the nape of his neck, my fingers cold against his hot skin. He closes his eyes when my fingers brush against the nape, sighing deeply. I pull his face closer until my lips are touching the lobe of his ear.
"It's Romeo, isn't it?" I breathe in his ear and he lets go of me instantly. His reaction makes me laugh as I pull back to see his face which is fixed in a furious glare.
Xavier hates being called Romeo ever since he played Romeo in the sixth grade. He had a stomach ache the entire day and left halfway during the balcony scene to go to the washroom which made the audience burst into laughter; His bestfriend, Chris, had to take his place and he narrated the entire incident to me later.
Ever since the incident, Xavier learned his lesson and started to take extra care of his health. He did that quite impressively. By the time he was in high school, he was the hottest guy on campus—an eye candy for both girls and boys alike.
I used to have fun taking advantage of his popularity by selling his number for a dollar to the girls in my class, though I felt bad for selling my sister's boyfriend number. My business collapsed badly when Bel found out and punished me by making me return all the money with an interest.
I had to carry hers and Xavier's bags to school for an entire month as an added penalty.
But to this day, Romeo & Juliet acts as a trigger to Xavier. He clenches his jaw and I notice his tense muscles. I might have made a mistake by upsetting him at the wrong moment and my laughter fades.
"Fine, it's Xavier." I roll my eyes as I try to correct the situation.
If I need his help, I will have to suck up to him because what I plan to ask of him is big and if I fuel his hatred, he will never agree.
The tension in his body eases and the smirk comes back. He puts his hands in his pockets as he watches me curiously.
"What do you need from me?" he asks. "Don't tell me you wish to continue where we left four years ago."
His anger is transferred to me with that. Ever since the slip-up at the party, his words started to be full of sexual innuendos. I never stop him because stopping him will make him know that it annoys me and anything that annoys me delights him.
Instead of giving him the satisfaction of winning this game, I smile. "In your dreams, Everest."
"Trust me, nemesis. In my dreams, we do everything without our clothes on...usually in my bed."
I show him the finger which makes him chuckle. He knows I will regret that night forever even though we stopped at the right time. I can only imagine what would have happened if he'd smashed his lips against mine. He was drunk, I was drunk and Chris was the one who caught us on time and had a heated argument with Xavier the next morning for being an asshole and almost cheating his girlfriend with her sister, and playing with her honor.
I really miss my sister a lot and I am about to shamelessly hurt her memories.
I'm a horrible sister, I'm a horrible friend, I'm a horrible human
"Follow me," I sigh as I turn around, erasing my brother's thoughts from my mind, and start climbing up the stairs.
"Aye, aye, captain.
*Xavier's POVI first realized that I wanted Harley Powers in my bed ever since I almost stole a kiss on her eighteenth birthday. We almost made out under the stairs and it was a result of the heavy drinks I took with Bel.We never talked about it again. I am glad she never asked because I didn't have an answer for her. There was just the plain truth — I, Xavier Everest, was unable to control my hormones when I saw her in that sexy black dress. The dress was made for her with the satin material wrapped tightly around her curves, the neckline dangerously low and displaying the creamy white skin of her cleavage. We were just talking but in the blink of a second, I had my lips dangerously close to hers. I could have had her that night but Chris caught us just in time. I know it was wrong of me to have those kinds of thoughts when I was already dating her sister, but I just couldn't help it.Her miniskirt falls just over her thighs and the smooth skin underneath is making my fingers itch
*Harley's POVConditions?I didn't think about that. As much as I hate to admit it, there should have been no conditions if everything went as per my blackmailing plan. I should have been the one in control of this conversation, not him."What conditions?" I ask, pulling away from Xavier."Nothing much." He shrugs, taking a step forward and I take steps back immediately. He keeps walking towards me until I find my back hitting something behind, preventing any further movement. He stops, his hands bracing themselves on the dressing table behind me and I find myself trapped between his arms.It is unfair that he gets my body reacting wickedly every time he is close. I never thought I would have feelings for him but I did."What conditions, Xavier?" I repeat, snapping my mind away from those bad memories."This deal stays between us." A his dark eyes which doesn't go unnoticed by me. "We'll be lovers for others."I think about it-it doesn't sound like much. Lovers and Xavier never go in
*Xavier's POVBenson is the worst scum to exist on earth. His pretty face can't do justice to his black heart. As he sits across from me and Harley in the hall, his face has a blank expression. His eyes move between us as we sit there with fake smiles plastered on our faces. The level of discomfort I feel right now is unimaginable."You two are in love?" Benson asks, pointing a finger at the two of us and Claire nods. "Love?""Yes."The sweetness in Harley's voice is almost disturbing after the way she spoke with her Dad an hour ago. The girl could have been a great actress if she wasn't interested in the fashion industry."And you want to marry him?""Yes," Harley says, nodding again."But you hate him." Benson frowns."I never did." Harley looks at me and smiles innocently. "I've always loved him. I couldn't do anything about it since Bel and— ."Only I notice the disgusted look she throws at me after she spills out those words. It is like she just swallowed fat. I wonder if I shoul
*Harley' POV"Xavier Everest?!" Nina's jaw hangs open in the air, her coffee cup stopping midway to her lips."Xavier hot-as-fuck Everest?!" Jesse exclaims, her amber eyes shining bright.I nod, sipping my strawberry milkshake with a straw, as I look at my two best friends. We are currently on a break from classes and we decided to check out the new coffee shop that opened nearby. The place is comfy and the smell of coffee and cakes greeted us the moment we stepped inside through the glass doors. 'Hot Cup Brews' is already gaining popularity and I see a few of our classmates huddled around a little table at one corner. They are chattering at the top of their voices and picking attention quickly."Harley Powers!" Nina calls out loud, snapping her fingers in front of my face and making me turn my attention back to her.Her toffee-colored hair hangs loose, framing her round face as she curves her lips to a disappointed look. She recently went to Hawaii for a family trip and got a tan, re
*Xavier's POVThe sight before me gave me a headache the moment I saw it. I have zero tolerance for guys like Mason Holiday. His trapping Harley between his arms and manhandling her like that is an absolute no-go.No one touches my girl.I walk towards them, striding casually, while Harley looks at me with her mouth opened in surprise. Mason has her pressed against his car and has his head turned towards me, watching me with curious eyes."Mason Holiday," I say when I reach them and the kid flinches unnecessarily."I think you have something of mine. May I please have her back?"My politeness is sarcastic and Mason releases Harley, trailing his eyes over my body from head to toe. He is shorter than me but not that short as to not look me in the eyes."Are you marrying him?" Mason turns to ask Harley but she has already moved from her place and is standing behind me.Mason jerks his head towards her and I feel her hands grip my arm.Harley Powers isn't the kind of woman who hides behin
*Harley's POVI stare in wonder as Xavier drives the car through a huge, silver gate and heads straight towards a palace that I could have only hoped to see someday in my dreams. The garden we pass through seems like it spreads across miles and has a beautiful fountain in the middle, surrounded by statues.I have never been to Xavier's house before. His place was for Bel, not me. I had no reason to visit this place but I heard Bel talk about it although she was really bad at describing things in detail. The mansion is huge, with three stories of stunning architecture made of white marble. The glass windows are large with wooden crafting decorating them. I can't help but roam my eyes around every part of the building, not able to get enough.Xavier stops the car right in front of the entrance and I see servants rushing towards us. I stare at the tall and fit man who opens the door to my side. He is dressed in a black T-shirt, black cords, black shoes and even has black sunglasses on. H
*Xavier's POVMy hands hurt as I continue hitting the punching bag with full strength. I have been going at it for an hour without stopping and even though my muscles ache and my knuckles feel like they have reached their breaking point, I can't seem to get rid of what Mom did today.I didn't bring Harley here for Mom to go ahead and embarrass me in front of her. I brought her here so that Mom could see for herself that I was telling the truth. I can't unsee Mom's tears. The last time I saw her cry was when Dad died four years ago. Her spilling tears today enrages me. Harley did this to her."You're hurting, Xavier." Mom's voice behind me stops me for a moment but I dismiss her and continue. She shouldn't be here anyway. The top floor of the house is entirely my space — everything from the gym to the swimming pool on the rooftop are my additions — no one is allowed to disturb me here."You embarrassed me today," I spit out without looking at her when I don't hear her leave; my voice s
*Harley's POVShit! I'm so late.As I step inside the house, I am greeted by darkness. The lights are off and everything is pitch black. Visiting the Everests is about to earn me a lecture from Dad. I quietly slip out of my shoes and pick them up, dangling them on two fingers as I climb up the stairs. I tiptoe most of the way, not wanting to wake my parents up. The lights are switched on just as I am about to enter my room, making me stop on my way.The universe is against me today.I am past my curfew time and even though I am a mature adult capable of taking care of herself and it shouldn't matter at all, Dad will be pissed when he sees me now. The man doesn't give a damn about my independence but is very cautious of me so that I don't end up dying like his son. It is annoying but that is the only thing I can't call him out on.I turn around slowly, shoes in hand, and find Mom and Dad looking at me. They are already dressed in their nightgowns which means they were about to retire f
