"Hannah brought me to Valiant where I eventually joined the Council. I have spent the last few hundred years helping the Fates and my ruler with whatever task they needed. It has been a daunting but rewarding task." Zan finished his tale.

It felt good to tell someone what happened all those years ago. The Guardian was not even sure if Hanna knew everything that occurred. Zan believed he had put all of it behind him long ago, but seeing Lanassa again proved that he had never actually processed what happened. 'Better to work through it now than never to do it at all,' Zan reasoned.

"So you did not jilt the Queen?" Aurora asked, deep in thought.

Zan nearly choked on the question. "What? No! Of course not. If anything, she jilted me."

"Either one of you is lying or no one was jilted at all." Aurora scrunched her face at the word 'jilted'. Like any word said repeatedly, it now sounded strange.

"What are you thinking?" The Guardian looked at the young woman expectantly. It was clear she ha

Zoltan tried to form his thoughts. He had happily buried all those memories, but the time had come to dig them up."I wanted to protect you," the king repeated to his wife. "I knew the explorer would never stay. He would leave you as soon as he got bored. It is what explorers do. They are constantly on the move. I tried to stall the wedding so he would show his true colors, but I could not stall it long enough.""You were the reason for all the problems with the wedding?" Zan shook his head. That is why nothing was ever ready on time. The king turned an angry glare of the man. "You would have left her, admit it! I still maintain that human love is not reliable. It is the real fairy tale here." Zoltan turned pleading eyes on the queen. "If Zan had left you after you were married, he would have ruined you.""So you decided that I should never have the chance to make that choice for myself?" Lanassa asked, realizing quickly what had occurred. She leaned away from her husband, disgusted.

"You cannot commit the elven army to go to war without our permission," Lanassa looked at her son with confusion."I did not commit the army, only myself," Ithel affirmed."I pledge myself also," Alvar added, eagerly standing as well. He would not let the prince fight alone.Zoltan tried to reason with the elves, "Let me understand. You want to go in…just the two of you…against the army of gnomes and Prince Alaron's supporters?""Of course not, Father. We will have Brinn, Gandr, Zan and a large host of humans to help us succeed." Ithel responded. "I have given my word. I will not breach it."Zoltan crossed his arms. "Defying us for the Empress yet again. No wonder your wife is jealous.""I support my husband," Calla stood and took Ithel's hand. The he-elf beamed with pride. "We must do what is right and stand against the gnomes. Jealousy should not blind us," she added the last part in a softer tone with an apologetic look at Aurora. The Empress nodded. "Indeed. Thank you Princess Cal

The small village was exactly where the young scout had said, and the ragged group filed into the town in the darkness of the night. The sleepy village had not quite settled down, and as news of the coup spread, lights in every window were lit while the occupants spilled into the streets. The mayor came out to greet Devrim and bowed. "Your Majesty," he said. "I am most distressed by the news that we have received from your scout." Realizing who was in their presence, the townspeople bowed as well. They waited to see if what they had just heard was accurate. Did they have a new ruler?Devrim confirmed their suspicions. "It is true. We are on the run from my son. I understand if you do not want to take us in. But if you will house and feed us, we will leave you at first light. We do not want to bring trouble on your town," the grey-eyed man spoke graciously. The mayor only seemed half-listening, which Devrim at first thought was rude. The man's round eyes were searching the crowd when h

Early the next morning, the group left the town hoping to put some distance between themselves and the capital. The mayor promised to make the citizens keep quiet about what they saw, both for their own safety and the safety of the princess.Devrim chuckled to himself that he was not their chief concern, but he also could not blame them. If he were in their shoes, he would feel the same way about Mairwen. The group headed out east of the town and then hooked south, making sure that any loose tongues would give faulty information. After much discussion, Bella and Candela were left behind with the healer. Bella, who could not walk while her leg healed, would need to be carried on a stretcher, so she and her sister decided that they could not slow the others down. It was a tough call, and the women would be missed. Mairwen felt like she had said goodbye to another piece of her mother when she hugged them for the last time. The group traipsed along in silence for quite some time. Seeing t

Stallions, geldings, mares, colts, foals: horses of every shape and color were penned in neat rows leading back from the water's edge. The steeds were well kept, and the man with Mairwen seemed vaguely familiar.Mairwen spotted her father and waved him over happily. "Father, do you remember Damasippos? He is one of the royal equerries."Devrim squinted for a moment at the man as his mind tried to place him. While he could name most of the regular soldiers at the palace, the names of other staff members often escaped him. "I believe we have met," the Emperor answer noncommittally.Damasippos bowed his waist. "Your Majesty, it is an honor see you.""What are you doing out here?" Devrim asked. He had intended to direct the question at Mairwen, but as Damasippos was still bent in half, he did not realize this.As he straightened, the equerry answered, "Many weeks back, the princess requested a new gelding. I came a few days ago to the breeding ground to observe and make a few selections."

"You have some very fine clothes, Sire!" Junayd admired his temporary garment as they walked into town. He felt taller than usual as those nearby bowed their heads briefly in respect as he passed. As a general, people usually paid him some deference, but beside the Emperor he was basically invisible. He was enjoying the attention, especially from the ladies of the village."Do not let the prestige go to your head," Devrim warned under his breath. "If they do not notice you when you are common, they are not worth noticing when you are noble.""Wise words, general." Junayd hooked a smile. It was clear he was enjoying this far too much. A young woman dropped her coin pouch right in front of him, and he bent down to hand it to her.The dazzling smile that she gave as a thank you made the man feel like he was invincible. "Thank you, my lord," the woman said with a curtsy."Think nothing of it," Junayd replied in his most silky voice. The woman sauntered off to a small group of other ladies

The little old woman waved her arms about dramatically as she spoke. "Thousands upon thousands of hostile men and monsters lay siege to the fort. Those in the humble garrison began to lose heart when the Princess rallied them. 'We must fight,' she said, 'hold on until the sun rises!' Along with the general and a few imperial soldiers, Princess Mairwen shot arrows into the darkness at the coming foe. By her bow, pirate after pirate fell to the ground, and many who sought to overthrow the Empress ended their days unsatisfied."But it was not enough. The enemy overran the battlements using sturdy ladders. As they came over the wall, the pirates and monsters cackled with delight. After some organizing, a tentative plan was put in place to catch the pirates that plagued the imperial group. Devrim could not help but smile at the thoughts of the other three. He was glad to be on their side and not battling against them."Let us head back to our group!" The Emperor said loudly, knowing that four someones were spying nearby.-------------The four pirates, who went simply by Angry, Shifty, One-eye, and Pungent, had been careful after two of their comrades died while they trailed the imperial troops. At first three of them had wanted to turn around and report the events to Xander, but then then Shifty reminded them that none of them had been close enough to hear the fugitives' plans. So instead they had been following the group for these past few days. The pirates had a good idea where the group was going but wanted to be absolutely sure. If they brought inaccurate news, Xander would have their heads on a platter. Alaron told the Empress his story. She was amazed by his words. However, it made his altered appearance make sense. His white hair had been gained by meeting the Maker while visiting the Mystic Spires, and his now silver eyes were earned in answer to his call."A Guardian," the Empress mused. "It is a high honor."The young man lowered his head humbly. "Not an honor I deserve, but one I will try to be worthy of.""But…it has been a year since all this happened." Aurora looked at him with a thousand questions in her eyes.Alaron nodded. "The Fates thought it best if I remained gone for a time. Let the world begin to heal. I spent the last year among the Fates in the Mystic Spires and got to know some of them quite well. But I knew that my time there had come to an end, and before I could return to take my place as a Guardian to help mend the world, I needed to mend our family first. That is, if you will forgive me." He bowed low again. "Will you?"There was a king painful silence. So l

The voice of the figure was one etched deep in Aurora's memory. It was almost as familiar to her as her own. It was the voice of a ghost now, yet the figure before her she was sure was flesh and bone."Clear the throne room," the Empress ordered.Nurlan stood behind her close to the throne with his hand resting lightly on his sword. "Your Majesty?" he asked, uncomprehending."Everyone out except him," she motioned to the cloaked man. "You may stay, Nurlan, if it eases your mind. And see if someone can find Hanna."The general quickly went to work. With the help of the other attending soldiers, every soul was removed from the room except the Empress, Nurlan and the mysterious figure. The man waited patiently, seemingly unconcerned with the flurry of activity his few words had caused.Aurora took a deep breath. While the figure had allowed them to be alone, she was still slightly scared that he might disappear at any time. "What forgiveness do you seek?""I seek the forgiveness of the

"Wake up! Rise and shine, Your Majesty!" Hanna said cheerily as she threw back the thick curtain that blocked the balcony. Light streamed into Aurora's bedchamber, but the woman pulled the covers over her head like a child. "You're back," the Empress groaned in a muffled voice. "I think it is sweet that you think I actually ever leave these days. Now get up!" Hanna yanked the covers back, but Aurora held on tightly. "Go away!" The stubborn woman wouldn't even open her eyes. She would not let the Fate win. "Where are my ladies-in-waiting?" "Anna, Bella and Candela are busy." Hanna answered unapologetically. "And my husband?" "He took over your very important duties and told everyone to let you sleep. It is a good thing I do not answer to him." Hanna fluttered her eyelashes innocently, but of course, Aurora did not see. Sensing the Fate would not give up her chipper attitude, Aurora pulled the only card she had left. It was, in the end, what made her unwilling to get out of bed "

  • Empress of the World   One Final Song

With slow progress, the prisoners and the victorious army headed for Valiant. Since the city was still empty of human citizens, there was no fanfare or grand welcome for them. That was fine; they were all just happy to be one step closer to being home.Only a small skirmish awaited the Imperial Army from those left behind. The palace was easily reclaimed without the catastrophic results of the last battle fought there. The sight of the large human force in the wrong shade of blue made the gnomes flee immediately, and those left of the ill-named New Emperor's Army only put up minimal resistance. The servants on the inside of the palace, seeing their rescuers in sight, freed those in the dungeon and set off a myriad of traps and clever devices that had been left behind by the scientist but never deployed. One such device covered the unlucky recipient in a slimy goo that made them slip and slide, never able to stand in that area again. Renat was thoroughly chastened for it later and force

"However, the unicorns think I shall live, even if I am not exactly whole."Zoltan's body from the waist up seemed normal enough, but his lower half and legs looked horribly wrong. His legs and feet twisted awkwardly, and his pelvis was much flatter than it should be. The boulder from the giant had done irreparable damage."Oh Father!" Brinn eyes were wide with fear."It is not as bad as it looks. Well, maybe it is, but I do not feel any pain." The king received a cup of water from a servant. Other fairies had the more difficult task of collecting the dead. Separately she passed by elves who were still gathering the gnomes in groups to hold them until the peace talks were complete. It was amazing how quickly things had been organized. Brinn realized that these plans must have been made before the battle began because neither the fairies nor elves seemed to need direction or supervision.Even more amazing was the new King of the Gnomes. They both glanced behind them and toward the sea. They could see neither of the battles clearly. However, they could hear the sounds of war wafting over the Beachy plains and see that at least some of the ships were still floating in the sea. The Emperor and Empress still had work to do."A fairy will come and get you once it is safe," Nurlan assured her. "Until then, we will stay put."Mairwen sighed and bit the inside of her cheek.
