“Mia..?” I asked with a trembling voice, trying to comprehend what was happening, “Why… are you inside my office?”

She turned my way with a concerned expression. She was just about to put some tea cup on my desk.

“I'm sorry!” she cried, “I think there was something wrong with the cheesecake I gave you… I took few bites and suddenly I felt sick… I thought you might feel like me, so I wanted to bring you some herbs for the stomach…”

I walked closer and took the cup from the desk. It really smelled like herbs, so maybe she wasn't lying about that…

“But why are you in my office…? I thought I closed the door…” I muttered, slowly regaining straight, after throwing up for the last ten minutes.

“Oh… but the door was opened. That was why I went inside, but then I saw you weren't there, so I decided to make you some herb tea and leave&hel

I got back to my office, made myself a cup of coffee, and turned on my writer's brain. I started to ask myself what should a character in my novel do to steal files from someone's computer… Mia didn't seem like a hacker to me, but she didn't have to be, if I was already logged, and I was logged before. She wouldn't need my login and password, the computer would only ask for my thumbprint…“How could she get my thumbprint?” I pondered about variable ideas that I had seen in movies and TV series. The only option was to remove my print by some substance, and then transport it with latex, silicone, or other rubbery thing to create a fake fingerprint. But when was she able to get my print?!“Let's face it, Ana… You are an idiot!” I shouted, scolding myself.I remembered exactly the moment I let Mia use my computer and touch my scanner with both of her thumbs… She might have use the first one to take and trans

  • Embracing the Devil   Ana, the spy...

I spent the entire morning and early afternoon on writing different scenarios inside my head. I couldn't completely ignore the danger surrounding my idea of following Mia to her meeting, but I was mad at Hiro too much to ask him, or anyone else from TK to help. Besides, who knew if there wasn't another person that helped Mia… That was the argument I used anyway. It was 4 PM and, thankfully, I was wise enough not to look through my door every two minutes to check if Mia was going out from the company, I used the surveillance. I sat behind my desk, prepared to leave at any time, and kept staring at the live footage from the cameras at the corridor. Finally, I saw her walking towards the elevator at 4:30… I waited until she got inside one and rushed with a tremendous speed after her, as soon as her elevator door closed.I assumed she got off at the level 0, I took a shot and went up there. In the meantime I wore my disguise. I put the cap on my head and lowe

  • Embracing the Devil   Celebration...?

I came back to the headquarters with Jay. Both of us came down to the -10th floor to report to Hiro. He was waiting for us impatiently right by the elevator. As soon as the door opened, he grabbed my hand pulling me close and hugged me tight not caring about the few employees from special force unit and IT department that were on the corridor.“What were you thinking?! No wait… were you even thinking?!” he asked feverishly.“I'm sorry… but it worked out fine, right?” I smiled trying to calm him down.“Yes… but you shouldn't take that risk by yourself,” he hugged me even tighter.“I wouldn't have to… if you trusted me before…” I smirked.“Don't try to act smart, I won't let you off tonight,” he whispered to my ear.His way of acting made everyone around shocked. It probably was the first time that they saw their boss showing any kind of emotions. On

  • Embracing the Devil   New chapter...

I rushed through the corridor towards my apartment. Hiro followed me.“Ana!” he called, but I didn't turn around and kept walking.I opened the door of my apartment, he run and shut it before I could enter inside, he stood there blocking my way in.“Ana, please… act reasonable…” he acted like he was trying to prove that my behavior was ridiculous.“Move away from the door,” I hissed, barely keeping myself from exploding. He stepped away, and I entered without saying a word. I closed the door. Some part of me hoped that he would try knocking, or just enter in… like he always did before, that he would try to explain, or to apologize…“Ana… you forgot that the word “sorry” doesn't even exist in his dictionary!” I corrected my naïve thoughts. My rational part of the brain was telling me that his plan was absolutely ingenious, and it was the

  • Embracing the Devil   Payment...

I went to the publishing house with Jay by my side. He seemed genuinely happy for me. That alone already put me in a better mood. He decided to stay downstairs in the hall, while I went to meet Ellen in her office. She already waited for me along with an assigned editor.“This is Peter Hall, he will help you polish your story,” Ellen pointed on a curly, brown-haired man sitting on right next to her desk.“Hi, nice to meet you, I'm Anastasia Kowalsky… Ana,” I smiled nervously.“Looking forward to work with you, Ana,” Peter answered with a deep and pleasant voice.“Peter is one our best editors, I can't wait to see the outcome of your cooperation,” Ellen grinned, agitated.I had to say, Peter looked very professional… and handsome. He was wearing a neat suit, he took notes from the information about my book that Ellen told him. He also already had some ideas for minor changes. All his idea

  • Embracing the Devil   His way of convincing...

I stayed in Hiro's embrace for a longer while. I kept finding it incredible how much I felt complete in his arms. His warmth covered my body filling me with bliss, and making me forget about my previous anxieties. It didn't make any sense, but I guessed that love is never rational, and I absolutely in love with Hiro. At the point when I became numb from being unable to move in his tight grip, he finally let me go, and led me to sit on the sofa. He poured me a glass of wine and sat right beside me.“Melisa told me… you used my plan… the windows… Why didn't you tell me?” I asked.“I wanted to, but you didn't let me. I wanted to tell you everything, but I wasn't sure if telling you everything wouldn't endanger you more,” he explained.“Endanger me more…?” I sighed, “Did you assume that I would reveal the real information to the mole? I even faked the date of the mission when she asked me!”

  • Embracing the Devil   Too good to be true...

It had been three days since I agreed to move in to the corner apartment with Hiro, and today finally came the moving out day. I wasn't certain if I made a good decision, but I was willing to try. I didn't have a lot of things to pack. When I moved to the city I had only two suitcases with me and a box full of books, not much changed since then. It took me less than two hours to pack. Then he came, insisting that he would bring my stuff by himself. I gave up on arguing with him and let him do it.He took my suitcases to the walk-in closet so that I could put my clothes there. He prepared the whole one side of the room for that filled with places for hangers and a lot of bigger and smaller shelfs and drawers. I used roughly about 20% of that space…“Is that all you have?” he asked, when I finished hanging my dresses and rest of the clothes.“Well… yes,” I admitted, hesitantly.“You should get some more. I will te

  • Embracing the Devil   End of bliss

On the way to Luna Café I kept looking behind my shoulder. I knew that Jay was following me, and discreetly watching from somewhere, but my anxieties only grew. For some reason my heart began to beat faster, and I couldn't shake off the feeling that something bad was about to happen.I went inside the Luna Café, Simon was already there, he even ordered the chocolate cheesecake that I loved. I greeted him smiling, forcing myself to chase away my irrational fears.“Would you mind if I order champagne?” Simon asked, “It's more proper to celebrate than raising a toast with coffee,” he chuckled.“I don't mind drinking a glass,” I laughed. He called for a waiter and we were already raising our glasses a minute later.“To Ana's first book published! It will surely be a best-seller,” Simon declared.“I would love to have your confidence, but I will drink to that…” I gri

  • Embracing the Devil   The miracle

I dreamt about attending someone's funeral. There were a lot of people without faces, they were all wearing black, mourning clothes, silently waiting for the burial. I passed them by and walked to the coffin. I was terrified, but something was pushing me forward, an unknown force told me to open the coffin lid. I gazed inside and burst into tears. I saw Hiro lying inside it. My chest was torn by agonizing pain, I couldn't breathe. My mind kept telling me it wasn't true, so I clenched my teeth and looked inside the coffin once more and I saw… myself. There was my body, lying, without the last ounce of life left. It was an empty shell. I flinched, but strangely the view didn't surprise me too much. Perhaps, I was aware that after you get shot, you die… I used to think that stories where one lover sacrifices himself for the sake of another are nothing more than a romantic fantasy. After some thinking, I always laughed at myself for writing such cliché ending in

  • Embracing the Devil   Revenge

Tsuchida Kosuke never made it to Police station. He used his connections to run away from police van, he must have planned it, just in case, before the meeting. He was now being chased across Japan, and the arrest warrant was sent all over the world. However, since he went into hiding, not even people from TK were able to find him… so far. There were no traces of Kaisei either. People from TK found out that he sold his all of the companies he owned a week before the board of directors meeting. It looked like he was preparing to leave. Perhaps, both Kosuke and him arranged that disappearance beforehand. That only made me more worried. It had been 3 months since Kosuke disappeared. I was restless. I could feel safe only when I was with Hiro, when I could hold his hand, or sleep in his arms. Whenever he wasn't around I constantly looked over my shoulder, even though Hiro set few of his best bodyguards to protect me.Hiro constantly traveled around to keep th

  • Embracing the Devil   Counting votes...

The election supposed to be made by a secret ballot. Every member of the board was given a specially prepared card to write the name of the candidate they vote for. Then the cards were collected and passed to Okada, so that he could read them loud. He stepped on the platform with his hands shaking, I bet it was a long time since he was that uncertain of his own position. He unfolded the first vote…“A vote for the current Chairman, Tsuchida Kosuke… Second vote for… Mr. Chairman… the third vote for, Mr. Tsuchida Kosuke as well…” he announced slightly relieved.I glanced at Hiro, he clenched his fist, but his facial expression remained unchanged. On the other hand, I was already breathing heavily and kept digging my nails into poor Melisa's hand. I guess, I was panicking for the both of us.“The forth vote is for… Tsuchida Hiro…” Okada squeezed out reluctantly, then unfolded another vote, &ld

  • Embracing the Devil   The meeting

Melisa led me to some conference room with a big screen and a remote control lying on the table. We were alone there, it looked like we were the only bystanders who were about to observe the board of directors meeting...I thought that Kaisei would be here as well, but he wasn't. It was relieving, I still wasn't certain how to react at his presence knowing he was the murderer's loyal dog.Melisa turned the screen on and soon we were able to see all nine people sitting at the conference table along with Okada, acting as a meeting clerk, standing beside the current Chairman. Hiro was sitting on the right side from Kosuke, he looked composed, but I could bet he was boiling inside being this close to his nemesis…“Are you nervous?” Melisa asked me suddenly.“Yes… a lot… but I have faith in Hiro,” I smiled.Okada walked on the platform and started the meeting, greeting everyone.“Let me present t

  • Embracing the Devil   Another step closer...

We had no time for our honeymoon, nor genuinely acting like newlyweds supposed to, but it was all right. I decided to help Hiro in any way I could for his plans to work out at last. His uncle had hard time acknowledging him in public, but he had no other choice since Hiro made sure that fact was widely spread by the media.Hiro and Melisa created a story where a young Tsuchida heir visited his father's friend when the rest of his family died in a tragic accident. The boy then suffered from a trauma for a long time and only now he decided to reveal his real identity… The press bought it. None of those articles mentioned Tsuchida Kosuke's involvement. There were no evidence that he had something to do with his brother family's death. Hiro realized long ago that the main culprit would never stand trial for this murder. His plan was to take everything his uncle took from him, and bring him to jail for something else…Tsuchida Ichiro, Hiro's father originally

  • Embracing the Devil   Congratulations!

Hiro smiled warmly and grabbed my hand.“Let's get married, Ana… now,” he gazed deeply into my eyes.My mind went blank for few seconds, after that my heart started to pound feverishly, a wave of heat filled my body along with some tingling sensation.“You don't want to?” he asked, hesitantly.I glanced at him in silence, and smiled. Then looked at his hand, gently holding and caressing mine, and understood that this sensation I felt in my entire body was pure happiness…“Do… do you… have a pen?” I muttered with my eyes filled with tears.“Are you crying?” he asked, confused.“Yes,” I laughed shedding tears at the same time, “Give me a pen… I will sign it.”Suddenly, he got up and jumped on my side through the table to hug me.“I'm sorry… The ring, the ceremony… I will give it all to you later, w

  • Embracing the Devil   Our date...

I stared at Hiro completely confused.“How can we go on date just like that…? Aren't you… hiding?” I asked.“The documents proving my identity officially came today. That's what this phone call was about… I can tell Wang Hiro goodbye,” he smirked.“That is great news… but what about your uncle? You are a big threat to him…” I tried understanding the whole situation.“I am, but he cannot do much about it now. He must have found out already that he won't find the thing he wanted in the vault, and that means he must have figured out that I have all the evidence against him,” Hiro snickered.“What are those evidence? What could they prove?”“There were video footage of my uncle bribing a government official, and a list of sums of money with names. There were all the people bribed by Okada and my uncle over the years. All the evidence were collect

  • Embracing the Devil   Declaration

I couldn't sleep. Hiro held me tight in his arms making me put my head on his chest. Unlike me, he was sleeping peacefully. I kept listening to the sound of Hiro's heart, it beat slowly and strong. It helped me calm down, but I was still far from away from falling asleep. I had this strange feeling that if I closed my eyes now, he would disappear…His sleeping face seemed amazingly kind and innocent. I suddenly thought how different he might have been if it weren't for his uncle and the death of his entire family. Perhaps, he would fall in love with some beautiful female college student, or a daughter of some other CEO, and he would have a happy life… and we would have never met. But could we truly be together… after all that had happened between us? If he meant what he said before, it would be possible… but I didn't want to go back to how the things were. I wanted something more. I wanted a declaration.I tried closing my eyes, but somehow

  • Embracing the Devil   Disclosure

Hiro took me to his apartment in Tokyo's residential district. My mind was blank the entire time we were driving there. He probably asked me how I feel once, I couldn't remember if I replied or not. When we entered, he showed me a bedroom and informed me that I should sleep there, and he would sleep on the sofa in the salon. After that he went to the bathroom to take a shower leaving me alone…I looked around. It felt like déjà vu. I couldn't stand him treating me like this coldly, indifferently. I wanted to run away from this place, from Hiro, from everything. It was unfair… I literally gave up on my life, I risked everything because I was unable to betray him, but ironically none of my words were believable enough for him. I couldn't explain my behavior even in front of myself, it was irrational. I guessed, I didn't kill all the love for him inside me yet, but seeing how I was unworthy of his trust could help finally end this process.I sa
