(Eight hours after Hector’s first time in the maze)
Hector hears the door open.
“Rise and shine, Hector and Ruby. Rex wants you both downstairs in ten minutes,” says Jesse.
Hector looks out from under his covers and sees Jesse standing there.
“Do I have time for a shower?” asks Hector.
Ruby is already jumping out of bed and making a run for the shower.
“Sorry mate. Looks like you won’t be getting that shower. Ten minutes. Downstairs. Ruby, be a doll and show him the way. I have to get the others up,” Jess calls through the bathroom door.
“Sure, no problem, Jesse. We will go down in a minute,” Ruby calls back.
Hector yawns and wipes the sleep from his tired eyes.
Jesse leaves the room. Hector gets up and drags himself to his dresser. He feels no pain now, but his body still feels tense.
He opens it to find a stack of black shirts in the lower drawer and a stack of blue jeans in the middle drawer. The upper drawer contains socks and underwear, all uniform style. Pulling out what he needs to wear today, he strips down and starts to dress when the bathroom door opens. Hector quickly slides his jeans up over his ass.
“Don’t stop getting dressed on my account. Bathroom is free, but no time for a shower, sorry.” Ruby says with a mischievous smile.
He quickly finishes getting dressed and heads to the bathroom to at least wash his face.
This girl is going to be the death of me, Hector thinks.
“Cat caught your tongue this evening?” Rub teases Hector.
Ruby gets dressed while Hector is in the bathroom. When Hector opens the door, he catches a glimpse of her naked back. His cock stirs.
I guess that still works, even though I am undead, Hector thinks to himself.
He grabs his cloak before she can notice he is looking at her. Hector heads out the door.
Ash looks amused as Hector runs into him. “Well, good evening, Hector. I am sure you slept well, sleeping next to a goddess.” Ash smiles at Ruby as she exits behind Hector.
Ruby smiles and closes the door.
“Good evening, Ash. You’re looking lovely tonight. Come on, you two, let’s go. We don’t want to piss off Rex,” says Ruby.
Ruby and Ash head down the stairs. Hector follows them to the kitchen, where Rex is waiting at a table.
“Good evening, Hector, Ash and Ruby. I hope you all slept well. We have a lot of work ahead of us. But first, open the refrigerator and get you a bag of blood. You will need it,” orders Rex.
Ruby and Ash head to the refrigerator and each grab a bag of blood. The blood in the bag smells wonderful to Hector, but the thought of blood twists his stomach. Hector, seeing the others eating, decides to try it.
Hector grabs a bag of blood and drinks it. It tastes heavenly, and he immediately feels better. His body is no longer tense. He feels alive.
“From the way you look, I take it you are enjoying your dinner, Hector?”
Hector looks up from his blood bag.
“Yeah, it tastes good, but I don’t think I will ever get used to drinking blood.”
Rex, Ash, and Ruby all laugh.
“We said the same thing when we first arrived here. Now, we don’t mind it, right Ruby?” says Ash.
“Yeah, it tastes so good. And fresh is even better from what we are told,” says Ruby as she licks her red lips and tosses her empty blood bag into the trash can.
“You will in time. Soon it won’t even phase you,” says Rex.
Hector throws the empty blood bag away and wipes his mouth with his hand.
“So, what are we doing?” asks Hector.
“The maze again. You all must get it right before we can move on,” says Rex.
Ruby groans and heads outside.
Ash smiles and follows her like a lost puppy.
“Oh, ok, I will try to do better,” Hector says with a feeling of dread.
“Good, let’s go,” says Rex.
They head to the maze. Hector goes over the path he knows and hopes he makes good choices tonight.
Once they are at the entrances to the maze, Rex turns to the three.
“Same rules. Get out in under five minutes. Who wants to go first?” ask Rex.
“I will go first,” says Hector.
“Good, whenever you’re ready,” says Rex.
Hector takes a deep breath and runs into the maze.
Having learned from past mistakes, he goes left, right, right, and then straight;which then leads him to alternatives of right or left.
He heads left and finds himself at another dead end. He turns to go back and sees mist. Hector runs into it, realizes it is garlic, and chokes and gags. As he is trying to catch his breath, Rex appears in front of him, beside the mist.
“Each time you have gotten further, there might be hope for you yet.”
Hector is still coughing.
“I know. What is my punishment this time?” asks Hector.
"We will see once the others have gone. I may need to punish them as well."
Hector, still coughing, follows Rex out of the maze and back to the others.
“Ash, you’re up,” says Rex.
Ash runs in and Hector is still trying to get the garlic taste out of his mouth.
“How far did you get?” asks Ruby.
“Not far enough. That spray is horrible.”
“Yeah, I remember that turn. I did that the first time I went into the maze.”
Hector looks at her curiously. “How many times have you all gone into the maze?” Hector asks.
Ruby smiles at him. “Let’s see, I have been here about a month. So, thirty or so times. Ash, he got here a week or so after me. Trevor has been here longer than me, but not sure how long for sure,” says Ruby.
Hector looks at her, then at Rex. “A month? You've been doing this drill for a month?” asks Hector.
Ruby glares at Hector, thinking that he is making fun of her. “It is not easy and besides I plan to beat it today. You will be here at least a month, if not longer.” Ruby smarts off to Hector.
Rex laughs at them arguing and shakes his head. He heads in to get Ash, as his time is up.
Once Ash and Rex are back with the group.
“Ok, Ruby, you’re up. Show them how it is done. You got really close last time,” orders Rex.
Ruby runs in with a smile. I will beat these boys and move on with Trevor, Ruby thinks.
“How did you do?” Ash asks Hector.
“I don’t know honestly, I got to a part with garlic spraying,” says Hector.
“Yeah, I got a little further than that. I just get my turns mixed up” says Ash .
“That is because you do not trust your vampire instincts. I have been telling you for over three weeks now, Ash. Trust in yourself,” says Rex.
As the boys are talking, Rex sees there is about a minute left when Ruby walks out on the other side of the maze.
“Nice job Ruby, you did it” says Rex.
Ash jumps for joy and goes to hug Ruby.
“You can watch them take their punishments and go again or you can go back to the castle Ruby,” says Rex.
“I think I will watch. Besides, I have to cheer on Ash here,” says Ruby looking at Hector with venom.
“Very well, Hector and Ash. I have two punishments. Ash, you can choose which one you want since you almost got to the end. Hector, you’re getting the first one.”
“Since it was garlic mist that got you, drink a whole cup of holy water. I am telling you now it will burn your insides, but it will fade within a few minutes,” says Rex.
Rex hands Hector the cup of water. Hector looks at it and knows he doesn’t have a choice. He drinks the whole cup as quickly as he can.
As soon as the water hits his mouth, he feels fire burning through his veins. It feels like drinking lava instead of water. The pain lasts for ten whole minutes before it fades, and it is bearable for him to speak again.
“These punishments are getting harder,” whispers Hector. His throat is raw and rough.
Rex laughs.
“Man, trust me, this is only the beginning. So, get this maze right or there will be more to come. Ready to go again?” asks Rex.
“Now, Ash, you can do the water too or you can get hit with a ray of sunlight from the gun?” Rex asks Ash.
“I take the ray, Rex. That holy water is no joke. I remember from a few days ago,” says Ash.
Rex nods and pulls out a ray gun from his gun holster and points it at Ash’s bare arm. Ash screams as the ray hits his arm. The skin is black by the time Rex turns it off.
“Ok, Hector, you’re up again. Let's see if you learned anything. Ready?” asks Rex .
“Not even close to being ready to do this again,” says Hector with a sigh.
“Well, let’s go,” orders Rex.
Ruby and Ash watch.
“You got this Hector,” says Ash through gritted teeth, his arm still hurting badly.
“No pressure Hector, it only took us this long to beat it,” teases Ruby.
Hector runs into the maze again. He goes left, right, right, straight, straight, and then right, which leads him to another left or right choice.
He goes left, right and then right. He is met with the choice of straight or left and chooses straight. This leads him to another choice between right and left.
Hector chooses left again, and he is brought to three paths: right, center and left. He knows time is running out. He listens to his inner voice and chooses right. This leads him out of the maze. Just as he crosses the finish line, Rex appears.
“Well, look at you. You finished just in time. Congratulations on passing your first test,” Rex says out loud.
Rex turns to hide his surprise. Wow, day one and he already passed the maze, Rex thinks.
They go back to the others. "Ash, you're the last one. Can you do it? ” asks Rex.
Ash smiles. “I got this.”
“You got it Ash. If the newbie can do it, you can do it,” says Ruby.
“You got this, man,” says Hector.
Ash runs in and they all watch the timer. Three minutes later, Ash comes out the other side of the maze. He pumps his fist in the air, cheering.
Everyone goes over to him.
“Nice work everyone. We are done for the day. Mike should be in the kitchen. Get you all some blood and you can hang out in the library or your rooms. Remember, the basement and upper floors are off limits. We will start the next task tomorrow, so rest up. You will need it,” says Rex.
“Well, looks like we have a fast learner,” says Ruby.
“How did you do it so quickly?” asks Ash.
“I don’t know, really. I just remembered which way I went the other times. The last part I just closed my eyes and listened to my gut about which way was out,” says Hector.
“You trusted yourself. That is what Rex has been saying this whole time. That is great. You want to go to the game room or library or something?” asks Ash.
“Sure, I guess we can go to the game room. Where is that at?” asks Hector.
“It is off the kitchen down the hall three doors down. We will show you. Are you coming Ruby?” asks Ash.
They walk back to the castle.
“Sure, why not? Maybe we can play pool or darts: see what else Hector is good at,” says Ruby as she walks in front of them, swaying her hips.
Ash and Hector watch as her butt moves with her hips. Ash blushes. Hector didn’t know a vampire could blush.
Hector feels his cock stir again. A feeling of sadness fills him as his mind drifts to Kelanar.
God, I miss you Kelanar. I hope you’re ok, Hector thinks as he follows the others into the game room.
Kelanar sits in a small cell, playing the last few hours over and over in her mind. The blood still stains her hands. She doesn’t know what happened, she just got angry and then Gage was lying there, covered in blood. Sheriff James told her that if Gage dies, then she will be charged with murder. She prays he survives. Sheriff James comes in and sits on a chair by her cell. “I have some news, Kelanar. He will live, thanks to the doctor,” Sheriff James says. “That is good to hear. I am glad he will make it,” says a very relieved Kelanar. “Tell me, girl, what was going through your mind when you hit him with a rock?” She stands up and paces the floor. “I don’t know. He was bad-mouthing Hector, and I was angry. I remember picking up the rock, and then there is nothing but blackness. When I came back to myself, he was on the ground bleeding. I didn’t know what happened until I saw the bloody rock in my hand.” “So, you blacked out, acted in rage, and you didn’t realize what you had
Hector walks into the game room and perceives that they have many games. From pool, darts, corn hole, archery, to knife throwing. Hector notices a few vampires and demons hanging out, playing games as they walk in. They spy Trevor by the pool table, playing with two demons. “Look who finally passed the first part of the training.” Trevor sneers at them. “Took you long enough as well. You just passed one day before us. Besides, Hector passed on his first night,” Ruby sasses him. “Shut it Ruby, no one needs your smart mouth,” says Trevor. “It's not necessary to be mean to her. She speaks the truth. You just passed,” says Hector. Trevor sets his pool stick down on the table. “Look here Hector, she's been a smart mouth off since she got here. I wouldn’t defend her. Besides, isn’t she the reason you’re here now?” says Trevor, getting closer to Hector. “She is part of the reason, but from what I understand, she was doing as she was told,” says Hector. “Think again. She volunteered for
Kelanar sits on her bed. It's soft and warm. She just wants to curl up and cry herself to sleep. She knows she can’t, as she needs to pack to leave in the morning as well as talk to her mother and sister. They will want some answers. Answers she herself didn’t know. She doesn’t know why she attacked Gage. What made her pick up that rock and smash it into his skull? She hears her mother come in. “What did the judge say? It must not be too bad if you’re home, my dear. Tell me what happened?” begs Sarah. Kelanar turns to Sarah, trying to not cry. “He realized that I was sorry and not sure what happened, but thinks it could happen again. I am sentenced to the Guard Tower for a year and only allowed to come home on the weekends.” Sarah sits on the bed beside her daughter and holds her. “Oh, my daughter, a year is a long time. At least it wasn’t jail or banishment. My heart couldn’t take that. We will see you on the weekends. This could be part of a bigger plan. We have to trust the go
Hector gets up and searches the bathroom. A few bottles of cleaning supplies, towels and soaps are what he finds when he opens the cabinets. He gets into the shower and washes his body. It leaves him feeling refreshed after his last encounter with the maze. His mind drifts to Kelanar and what she could be doing. Hector is so lost in thought that he doesn’t hear the knocking on the door until Ruby is standing by the shower yelling at him. “Hector, hurry. I need a shower and we are going to be late!” yells Ruby. “I am coming,” Hector calls out. He is breathing hard after being scared. Quickly shutting off the water, he dries off and goes into the room with a towel wrapped around his waist. “About time, Hector,” shouts Ruby. Ruby goes into the bathroom, and he hears the shower turn on. Hector gets dressed. He wears the vampire uniform. By the time he is dressed, Ruby is out and dresses herself. He looks away to give her privacy. “Tell me, what you were so distracted about that yo
Skorn watches Rex leave his study. His newest project seems to be doing very well. Hector has surpassed all his other vampires at this stage of the training. Skorn expects he will continue to see this at each level of the tests. Skorn gets up from his desk and he feels a sharp pain in his chest. He calls out as he falls. Jack, his most trusted friend, comes in. “Sire, are you unwell?” asks Jack. “I don’t know. I feel a sharp pain in my chest. Something is wrong. I need you to figure it out, Jack,” orders Skorn. “Yes, My Lord. Let’s get you to your bed where I can do a full scan to see what’s going on with you.” Jack helps Skorn to his feet, to his bedchamber and into bed. Jack, using his magic, scans Skorn’s body to locate what is causing his king’s illness. He scans Skorn from top to bottom, and finds nothing plaguing his body or mind. He is quite puzzled about it all. “Sire, I can’t seem to find anything that is causing you this pain. I don’t understand it. You spoke of a cu
Kelanar watches as Sheriff James leaves. She feels alone when she realizes that this is really happening. She stands there with her bag, ready to embrace her fresh path. Her chest feels heavy with dread. Try to put on a friendly and brave face. She is on her own. Master John looks Kelanar over and thinks about what to do with a woman at an all-men camp. “Come, I will show you to your room and then we will go over what you are going to be doing in your time here,” says Master John. Kelanar follows him back through the door and up a flight of stairs to the second floor, then down the left hall to where there are three doors. “The first door is to my room, if you need anything. The second will be your room. When you’re not doing your chores and helping the cook, it is best if you are here. The boys can, well, be boys.” “I understand. What are my duties while I am here?” asks Kelanar. “Help with all the meals and clean up as well clean the castle and any other room I or the cook t
Hector explores the library where he finds many books about witches, werewolves and sirens. He is curious and grabs a few books to read. He tracks Mrs.Blake down in her office. “Are we allowed to check out books?” asks Hector. She smiles and sees a stack of books in his hands. “I know you’re in training, so as long as you do what you’re supposed to, I don’t see the harm and will let you check them out.” “Thanks, I just want something to help pass the time.” “I know the feeling. You look so familiar. What's the last name?” “Hector Ale.” “Do you know much about your family?” she asks with a curious look. “Not much to tell. Father is dead, Mother is a barmaid in Sung and I don’t have any other family. Why do you ask?” “Well, you just seem like someone I used to know. Maybe I am mistaken . Your books, do take care of them. Hector, be careful. This is a dangerous world.” He leaves with his books thinking, she was acting very weird. He heads back to his and Ruby’s room. He sits
The next morning, Kelanar rises early and takes a quick shower before heading down to start on breakfast. Kelanar gets to the bottom of the stairs when she hears arguing. She peaks around the corner and spies two boys. One is Henry, and the other is an unknown boy. It looks like they are fighting. “Henry, what is your problem?” “My problem is you, Conner.” “You and your team have been nothing but a thorn in my side. If I ever catch you around my dorm again messing with my squad, I will put you flat on your back.” “Like you can, Henry. We both know the twins aren’t cut out for this life. You will have no one on your side soon enough. Then my team and I will take the lead and you will be left behind and alone.” Henry goes to attack when he notices Kelanar standing on the steps and thinks better of it. “Get out of here Conner, before I show you who you’re messing with.” “Whatever Henry, I'll see you on the training field. We can settle it there.” Conner walks off towards the mes
Kelanar sleeps most of the night, but early morning, around two am, she wakes up, notices the trash can and gets sick. Kelanar knows she drank too much. After she gets sick, she drags herself to the bathroom to take a shower. Why did I drink so much? Thinks Kelanar.Kelanar places her head against the cold tiles of the shower wall and lets the warm water hit her back. Once she cleans up and doesn't feel like the world is spinning, she goes back to bed.Kelanar sleeps until six am, then she gets up, dresses and heads down to help in the kitchen. Kelanar hears talk In the kitchen. She Ppushes open the door to notice a smiling George and Henry looking refreshed this morning.“Morning Kelanar, how are you?” asks George.“I am ok. I think my head is killing me, but I did drink last night for my guard induction with Henry,” says Kelanar.George chuckles. “Yeah, Henry is just telling me about it. I have seen many boys go through that. I am glad to see you can stand and still help with the ki
Hector wakes up in a dark room nothing like the room he last remembers being in. Hector tries to move, but finds he can’t. He is chained to a chair. Hector hears footsteps. They are very close.Around a corner he spies the queen and a few guards. He has a bad feeling about this.“Queen Gabrielle, what is the meaning of this? You signed the treaty. Why am I chained to a chair?” asks a worried Hector.“Oh, Hector, I am sorry this isn’t personal. You see, Rex is one who won’t turn on his King and give me information and my daughter truly cares for him, so I couldn’t hurt him. Now you, I know, are new to Skorn's ranks and have a love you can’t see. You're hurt and angry with Skorn. You will tell me what I want to know, won’t you?” orders Queen Gabrielle.Hector tests the chains. They are strong, holding him like a vise.“Oh, don’t bother Hector. These are vampire steel. You will not be able to break or get out of them, so get comfortable and answer my questions and we can put this whole
Kelanar is in shock due to Henry's statement. So much so, that when the barmaid comes back over, she is still speechless.“Would you like your check, Sir, or dessert?”“What do you suggest for dessert?”“Well, we have our famous apple pie, chocolate pie and chocolate cake.”Her bright eyes never leave Henry.“Apple pie sounds nice.”“One or two, Sir?”Kelanar just watches while smiling at Henry. This girl was flirting with him hardcore.“Two sounds good.”“Yes, Sir. I will be right back.”As the barmaid turns, she winks at Henry and glares at Kelanar. She comes back a few minutes later and places two slices of pie down. One is an enormous piece and the other is tiny, the bigger helping she gives to Henry. As she goes to leave, she spills a drink on Kelanar.“Oops, so sorry. Let me get you a rag in the lady’s room around the corner, if you'd like to freshen up,” says the barmaid sweetly.Kelanar glares at the barmaid, gets up and goes to the lady’s room. While she is gone, the barmai
Rex and Iris leave the Queen’s study and head to a little pub down the street from the castle.“I am glad you came back, but do you think it wise to leave Hector with my mother?” asks Iris.Rex orders two beers and sits by her.“Hector can handle himself. Besides, he's all business. He will have the drink with her and then head back to his room or go hunting. His mind is on his girl,” says Rex.“He has a girl? Is it that blond that came with you all?” asks Iris.“Well, in a sense, yes,” Rex takes a drink and sighs.“Hector is my charge, but he didn’t come to this life willingly, like most. We have to have some way to control the vampires. I am afraid you will hate me if I tell you this,” sighs Rex.“I couldn’t hate you and I know you have done things you don’t like, but you have a king to answer to, and we all know he is not very nice. Some even call him evil.”“Well, this is true. I had to threaten his girlfriend, the human one. If he gets out of line, she will be hurt and before we
“I can dutifully oblige you. Come, let me speak to the masters. I think they would give us both a pass to go to town to celebrate,” says Henry.“Is that allowed? I haven’t left here in six weeks. That would be nice to relax some. Let’s go,” says Kelanar.Kelanar follows Henry back to the castle.“I don’t see why it wouldn’t be.” Henry goes up to speak to the masters.Master John notices them while he is seeing the other masters off.“Henry, Kelanar, can I help you with something?” asks Master John.“Yes Master. I wish to take Kelanar to town to celebrate. May we have a pass? I will keep her in my charge,” says Henry.Master John looks like he is thinking, then he smiles.“I am not supposed to let her leave the compound unless she is going home, but as of tomorrow she will be officially in the guard and under my charge fully. I suppose I could allow it. If you promise to watch her and make sure you’re both back by curfew. It is a day to celebrate, for I believe some women might want t
Hector and Rex walk into a grand room. A long table is present and the queen's throne sits at the end of the grand table. There are many people seated at the table already. The young girl from before sees them.“You both clean up nicely. The queen will be pleased. Come with me.” She leads them to the two chairs on either side of the queen’s throne. They sit and Hector turns to the girl.“Do forgive me, but I didn’t catch your name earlier.”She blushes. “I am sorry, I am so used to Rex, I forgot to introduce myself. I am Princess Iris.”Hector is surprised and bows.“I am sorry, Your Highness. I didn’t know you were a royal,” says Hector.Rex laughs. “It’s fine, Hector, you didn’t know, and Iris isn’t one for titles. Just respect the queen and we will be fine,” orders Rex.Ruby and Ash join the group a few moments later. Ruby sits next to Hector and Ash sits next to Ruby.Hector goes to speak with them when the double doors open and everyone stands and bows. The queen enters wearin
Kelanar sent her letter over three days ago and she has been waiting to hear back from her sister, Eve. She is helping George with breakfast when Master John hands her a letter.Dear Kelanar,Glad to hear you're doing ok. I can’t believe they have you in the guard, that is crazy, but mom and I are very proud of you. If they were to have a first woman, we could see it being you. I know you are great with a bow, so give those boys hell. I can’t wait to see you for our birthday. Write back soon.Love, Eve(Six weeks later)Kelanar has been enjoying her time with Henry in the morning as they help George and then they train all day. Then they get some time alone as they clean the boots. Master John said that this was the last week for boots, thinking they had been punished enough. Henry has been doing all this with a broken hand. He gets the wrap off today.Kelanar has been getting better with a sword, and she is moving up in the ranks with the boys. She is still the best with a bow and M
Henry is in his bed and can’t sleep. What Kelanar said really bothered him. An idea comes to him, and he goes to sleep before his alarm goes off at three o'clock. Ben and Ken groan at that. It is not time to get up yet.Henry wipes the sleep out of his eyes and grabs a quick shower before dressing and heading down to the kitchen. He sees George.“Well, good morning, Henry. What are you doing up already?” asks George.“Morning George. Well, Kelanar made a comment yesterday that really bothers me. She must do double duty as a woman and a guard. I find it very unfair.”“I am sure you do, but that is the orders and like you said, she is a woman.”“I know very well. I have come to a decision that, as long as she has to, then I will too. So, put me to work,” says Henry with confidence.“Very well, that is very you. Grab some potatoes, get to peeling. She will be here soon,” orders George.Henry sits and gets to work. A little before four, Kelanar strolls in. She spies Henry working and is
The sun sets, and Hector and Rex rise from their sleep. Hector stretches his muscles, stiff from horseback riding, and wants a shower.“Do you mind if I shower first, Rex?” asks Hector.Rex looks over at him and smiles.“No, go ahead. I like to hunt before I shower, but make sure you are done before I get back. No taking your time like a woman would,” says Rex.“No, I will be out pretty quick,” says Hector.Hector walks into the bathroom. He sees a good sized room. On the walls he sees a lot of symbols like runes. He uses the restroom and turns on the shower. As soon as he does, he smells this fragrance consisting of roses, lavender and some other herbs. Hector knows he is in the kingdom of the witches, and he needs to stay alert. He strips out of his clothes and steps into the warm water. He sees many bottles of soap and they all smell like the rain. Hector quickly uses them, rinses off and dries with a towel he finds hanging on the wall. He walks out of the bathroom just as Rex is
