CHAPTER 2: THE STRANGER FROM BALI
SLAP.
The strong slap fell on Raquel’s cheeks, while she was sitting opposite to her parents. It came from her father who was enrage, but in spite of the pain she bear, Raquel remain stoic as if it didn’t just hurt her.
She was used to this. This was nothing new for her.
“It was just a simple request, yet you are still useless!” The older Roswell was impatient, he was scowling at her. “You had been married to David for months, yet you couldn’t even get some money from him! If you needed to kneel, kneel and beg! Do everything, you useless piece of junk!” Her father said in annoyance. “The only good thing about you is that you are married to a rich man, so fucking go back to your house and be a fucking wife!”
“Yes, Pa.” Raquel quietly stood up.
She was about to leave, when somebody hold her arms. It was her mother. She knew that hell would continue for her.
“Understand your father, after all you owe us for where you are now, Raquel.”
She wanted to vomit in disgust. She wanted to shove her away, but she remain there motionless.
She owe nothing to no one. Raquel isn’t indebted to anybody. She wanted to scream her frustration and misery, but she remain prim, her anger and grudge buried, because she knew how much this two person in front of her would only made her suffer more.
All she needed to do was listen, fucking listen and get some money from David.
Earlier said than done.
‘Get money from your rich husband. Beg for him. Seduce him, if you needed to. Kneel, if that is what he ask and needs.’ Hearing them over and over again, Raquel soon find herself hating more and more the man named David.
David Smith, the rich husband who broke her until she was battered.
“I will, Mom.” Was all she said, before she found herself hailing a cab, and crying herself at the back of the taxi.
“Where to, Madame?”
“At the Smith residence, please.”
There’s no use crying now.
**
When they arrived at home, Raquel was greeted with silence. The lady of the house was gone and her sister was who knows where. Perhaps, her and her husband are both together all along. After all, they are the one who are suppose to get married.
She bitterly smile.
Taking a deep breathe, she sat at the edge of their bed.
She won’t seduce him, but she can do things.
She was just tired getting hit by her father. She hated it. Raquel hated the fact that she was helpless here. Tears streamed on her eyes.
That’s when the door of her room—their room was pushed open. It was David, who blew out an irritated breathe upon seeing her crying.
“What?”
“I—” When she lifted her head, she was stopped upon seeing that he wasn’t alone.
On his arms clings Grace, who was eyeing her as if she were a dirt on her soles.
“If it wasn’t my gold digger sister.” Her words were like venom.
She gritted her teeth.
“Just say what you need.” He was eyeing her mockingly. “You need money, right?”
Raquel gulp down the shame.
“Yes, I needed money.”
“Oh c’mon, are you really going to give her some?” Grace scrunched her nose. “Who knows what kind of things she is going to use your money for.”
“Shh, I’ll handle it, baby.” Their display of affection made her disgusted.
But she needed to gulp down her pride. It was for her. It was for her parents to leave her alone for some time.
“Well, got yourself some dime, bitch, but you should know that you must pay the price.” He spat out, before leaving the room with her sister.
Raquel shut down her eyes tightly. Genuine tears fell from her orbs. Shakily moving to grab a cheque and write down an amount that won’t bother David, but would make her parents happy.
**
When she gave the cheque to his father, she was relieved upon seeing that greedy look on his eyes.
“I should go.” Raquel stood up. “David would look for me, and I needed to return quick.”
“Yes, take care of him.” Her father smiled, pleas. “Follow his whims, and do everything to make him satisfied, dear.”
He sounded sweet, sugar-coated words that were like poison, and it made her wanted to vomit. It was if he had not just slap and force Raquel to beg for money.
She only nodded her head.
“Raquel.”
She turn to look at her mother.
“Yes, ma?”
She knew what was coming.
“I think it’s my turn to ask now, right?” Her voice was soft, she was almost affectionate, but Raquel knew the nature of her mother. “I’ve saw some expensive things on your house when I visited last week, why don’t you sell some and buy me some bags that I was trying to get my hands on? I was hoping that you could grant my request, dear.”
The searing pain from her hold made her arms throb. Seeing how her mother would react if she dare say no, she was force to only nodded her head.
“I’ll do what I can, Ma.”
Her face instantly erupted with glee.
“Oh my god! Thank you, Raq!”
When she went outside, Raquel was weary. Meeting her parents took a toll on her, what more if they knew that they should ask Grace for money and caprices, because it seems like her husband fancy her more than his wife.
She was not bitter, because she loves David. All she felt was hate, that unending loathsome that was eating her alive.
Then out of nowhere, a car pulled beside her.
Raquel hastened her steps, that’s when a soft baritone yet familiar voice call for her name.
“Raquel?”
She felt her heart dropped for a second. She couldn’t go wrong.
“Raquel.”
Glued, she slowly turned to face the car, and unconsciously stepping behind to see the man she never knew she would ever run again.
Eliot. It was Eliot Duke.
“I was right, it was you.” Eliot’s smile broaden.
He quickly stop the engine of his car and meet her outside. While Raquel was lost, Eliot seems pleas. As if he was happy to see her. He was in delight, while she was still in shocked.
“Hey, are you alright? Did I scare you?” A frown made its way to his face.
The Raquel in front of him looks wary, and… somewhat scared.
“What are you doing here?” That was the first thing she said.
Raquel looks terrified
“Did I do something to scare you?” Eliot couldn’t help, but ask.
For some reason he was worried.
“Can I drive you?” No. “To your home, I mean.”
No, it wasn’t right.
Them, meeting there wasn’t right from the very beginning.
“No.” Raquel reprimanded herself.
She couldn’t get involved to Eliot, but she won’t deny the fact that meeting him now had stirred something inside her chest.
Eliot lips parted in surprise at her straightforward answer. He was not expecting that, but he manage to pulled himself together. The night they shared came back crumbling into pieces. She wasn’t happy to see him. Perhaps, Raquel did not enjoy it the way he did.
“I’m sorry, if I just approach you.” His words were empty, his voice lost its glee. “I’ll get going now. Take care of yourself, Ms. Roswell—.”
“It’s Mrs. Smith.” Raquel was blunt.
“Oh…” If he was surprise earlier, Eliot was more than stunned.
When he turned his back, he felt funny.
“Mrs…” He trailed off, shaking his head in disbelief, while Raquel watched him leave.
She watched him walk away until he was gone, and that’s when the mask she wore crumbled, leaving the frail Raquel and her heart who also mourn and yearns for that stranger.
“Eliot…”
CHAPTER 3: MRS. SMITHRaquel knew for a fact that Eliot is somebody, a sin from that island she must forget, but her heart couldn’t. The memories of the night they shared would came back, on how much she moaned with pleasure, forgetting the marriage she was forced to, while they were together.Eliot Duke made her forget every pain, and the torment meant to made her suffer. When she rejected him, Raquel knew it ended, that the fate that was playing between them was already cut in loose. Not until seeing the great Eliot Duke in the flesh to the charity ball she had accompanied her mother.“Tired of forcing yourself to smile, Mrs. Smith?” Eliot’s voice filled her ears, and unconsciously, Raquel stepped away from him. “Am I really that scary, huh?”She hardened her resolve.Don’t do anything silly. Raquel was begging herself. Don’t do something that would only hurt you badly at the end. She reminded herself about what happened to David that night before the whole world knew that they had
CHAPTER 4: IMPRISONEDHad fate been playing their lives? Last night, Eliot promised that if Raquel wouldn’t ask for his help, then he wouldn’t forced her to, but seeing her inside the company he owns gave him another reason to approach her. This was their 3rd coincidental meeting.Raquel.But his trance didn’t last long. Eliot could feel his blood boiling with anger upon seeing whom she is with.“Oh, I wanted this one! Doesn’t this look great, Raq?” It was the woman, who hurt Raquel before. “Buy this for me!”She looks happy, while Raquel seems like she was forcing herself to smile again. Her face dim, her smile faltering.“Do you have a set of this diamond ring?” The woman asked again.Seeing the panic embracing her eyes, Eliot found himself intervening.“Justin.” Eliot looked at his manager. “I’ll take it from here.”“Yes, Sir.” His manager excuse himself.Eliot faced the two.The woman who was with Raquel faced him curiously.“I’m Eliot Duke, the owner of this store, how may I he
CHAPTER 5: ABANDONED[WARNING for 18+: Triggering scenes ahead.]“Had you learn your lesson already, Raquel?” Geneva Roswell asked her eldest. She was calmly sitting opposite to her, while she sipped her morning tea.Raquel nodded her head.“I am, Ma.” Her voice is empty. She was motionless, while her mother smiled sweetly as if she didn’t do anything wrong.“Perfect!” Her mother clapped her hands together. “Now that you have, go change yourself, because you really stink! My God, what kind of filth had clings on you on that place, I could never imagine!”I could also never imagine that you would put me behind bars. Her grudge was unending.Raquel submissively stood up and went upstairs.Under the shower, she scrub her skin. Hard. Until it gets reddened, painful enough to made her sobs. It is not because she was scared anymore, but it was directed to another pain cause by somebody else.Eliot.“I was coming. Wait for me.”But he never did.Raquel waited, but no presence of him showed u
CHAPTER 6: GOODBYE STRANGER “I—” Raquel gulps. The awkward air made the atmosphere between them thickens. Even with David, she had never been this nervous, only with Eliot. Only with this man, whom she always wonder—“Why?”“Why?” Eliot looked at her.“Why do you wanted to help me?” She was straightforward. “…so bad?”Raquel didn’t know, but Eliot was like a breathe of fresh air, away from the abuse. He was the same stranger. Always carefree. Always the risk-taker. He was full of freedom, while she’s not. And she will not drag someone to the same hell just because she was chained there.Elliot is just…too precious to be contaminated by her toxic family.“And I wasn’t blind, I don’t want to assume, but your action speaks of a pursuant man.” She bit her lips. “And you know…I am married, I am no longer free, Eliot.”“Raquel…” Eliot took a deep breathe, before looking at her. “Would your doubt be compensated, if I told you that I like you?”“Don’t give me that crap, Eliot.” With him aroun
CHAPTER 7: THE MERCILESS DUKE“Hey, bitch.”The next morning, when Grace saw her, she instantly grins as if knowing exactly what happened yesterday night.“I’ve heard Mama almost killed you.” She chuckled, pouring herself a glass of drink afterwards.Raquel wasn’t wrong. But she did not speak. She wouldn’t gave her the satisfaction she was seeking. It was just the two of them, who was left alone on the mansion. Both of their parents are out, drowning themselves with the luxury in exchange of their daughter. Raquel bitterly thought.“Oh, seems like cat have gotten your tongue, Raq.” She mocked. “Oh hey, mind serving us a breakfast?”“You can do it yourself—” She was fed up of her, but came a voice of the man she hated the most.“Watch your mouth, Raquel.” It was David, who shared a sloppy kiss with Grace in front of her, when he get closer.“That was great, honey.”Raquel was disgusted. The food felt like it taste bland. It isn’t because she was affected by whatever’s going on between
CHAPTER 8: JEALOUSY“Are you following me?” When the two of them had gotten alone, Raquel couldn’t help herself, but be frank.“What made you think I am?” Eliot raised his eyebrows.“Because you are exactly on the same place, where I am supposed to be.” She squinted her eyes.“Then it wasn’t my fault, Mrs. Smith.” Eliot countered back, emphasizing the last word. “A coincidence can happen.”“Coincidence, my ass.” But Raquel isn’t backing down. “I know what you are doing. How many times do I have to tell you that I am not going to accept your help—”Only to get stopped, when the door to the kitchen was pushed open.Sister Eliza looked to the pair, “Is everything okay here?”“Well, yes, sister.” Her expression changes. She smiled softly at the nun. “We’re just uh…uh, right. We are trying to discuss what meal to prepare for the children.”“Oh, really?” Sister Eliza exclaimed with utter delight. “The children would be happy knowing that you two made it! Don’t worry, I’ll leave you two. En
CHAPTER 9: CONVICTED“David! Open the door! David!” Grace was in a hurry.Beads of sweat was trickling on her forehead. A look of worry past across her face. Her hair was loose behind her back, and she isn’t properly dress like she was used to be.“What is it?” A groggy voice came.It didn’t take her another minute. When the door was pushed open, she quickly get inside as if being chase.David looked at her as if she had grown two heads.“What have gotten into you?” He was frowning. “And you look scared. Is there a problem, honey—”“Don’t you dare call me that stupid endearment!” When she faced the man she used to get wooed, there are no blinded affection. Her face was boiling with anger. “Father told me what you did. How can you do this, David?! After all?! You betrayed us!”“Betray you?” David raised his eyebrows. “I didn’t betray you. Didn’t the authority find the drugs on his trunk?” He chuckled.“You know what will happen—!” Grace was frustrated. “But do you know that I have been
CHAPTER 10: MARRIAGE FOR CONVENIENCE “Mom, I hated this dress! It’s too bright and ugly!” Grace groaned. Her shrill voice echoed. Stomping feet reoccurred afterwards with her nonstop complaint with the red dress she wore. But regardless of her disgust, she couldn’t do anything same with Raquel, who sits there silently, because it is Mrs. Roswell, who arranged the dinner for them. She said that Grace is at age to marry, which made Raquel confused.Isn’t she and David had a thing with each other? “Keep your voice down, Grace!” Her mother hisses. “Keep still, if you don’t want me dragging you out of here, you got it?”“As if you can scare me with that.” Grace rolled her eyes. But Raquel was well aware why. All eyes are on them. There are whispers and bickering, some throwing them a glance filled with accusations—and she knew why. The rumor about her father being falsely imprisoned because of illegal possession of drugs are still hot on their eye. It is a big scoop for the media, but a
The next morning was a bliss. For Raquel, it was, but for Eliot, it isn’t.When she noticed the grim look plastered on his face, Raquel did not hesitate to ask, “Is everything’s alright?”Unlike her, Eliot was already fully clothed compared to the bareness they share last night, and the thirst they both patched up with flames. But his face seems to be I grave, grievance worries that she was oblivious about. Is it about last night? She don’t think so. When they did it, he doesn’t seems regretful, no remorse and lament that she could perceive as they make love to each other. If it is love making, and not just some sex he had been pursuit, because of his anger.“It’s my father.” Eliot brushed his hair, already messing the tangle knots that lay sprouted on top of his head. “Maids called, he had been diagnosed last night, and they said he is in the ER.”“Oh my god.” Worries flashed before her eyes. “Do you wanted to go to him? I can packed some things up, and let’s just grab some breakfast
“How long had I been out?” Eliot asked. So far, his conditions are getting better. He is already recovering from the worst scenario that Raquel feared he’ll fall once he lay there on that hospital bed.“Just a couple of days, but everything’s good.” She was busy peeling an apple as she glanced on her shoulder to look at him. “Jerome said that you can be discharge tomorrow, since you’re okay now, but they are still going to run some test, Eliot.”“Who’s Jerome?” A tiny bit of jealousy made his chest twitched.Raquel noticed it.“It’s the doctor, Eliot.” Raquel rolled her eyes.“I’m just making sure that no one’s trying to pursue you yet, Raq.” He joke, chuckling“Oh, don’t be absurd.” Raquel placed down the apple and the knife in the table and dried her hands. She grab the plate and walked near to his bed. “Are you still not going to believe me after I confessed?”“Of course, I do.” Eliot hold her hand. “Because I love you.”Their eyes meet.Raquel softly smiled at him, “And I love you

Anita is kind just like how Doctor Gonzales described her. It was later that day Raquel meet Anita when she paid a visit for the pair. “I was worried when I saw the two of you in the riverbanks. Oh god! I felt like I am going to have a heart attack by the sight of you, Raquel, and Oh! Your wounds!” Anita exclaimed. Her voice is loud, it echoed to the wall, but it was her expression that put ease Raquel’s worry, and fear. She may be old, white hair may lay sprouting on top of her head, but Anita moves as if she were much younger than her age. And Raquel…actually likes here. “I owe you, our life.”It was true. If it isn’t for Anita, Raquel and Eliot may have died, and she couldn’t let that happen, not when she hasn’t found out the truth yet, and the identity of those men. Raquel knew who have may sent those men after them, but she was still unsure, not when it is still not yet confirmed. It could be David, who may have any idea what has been going on

David did not ask what happened. After the confrontation, nobody speak. Nobody dare to bring it even. He just left, and everything was back to normal, except that he isn’t as harsh as before. He cooked, before he left, and Raquel couldn’t be feeling grateful for once. But that doesn’t mean she was already at ease.Staring at the paper on her hand, she let out a loud sigh, “Am I doing it, right?” She asked herself. The document she have gotten her hands onto contain the truth. It is her birthplace. Doctor Vergara gave it to her, before he left. He told Raquel that if she wanted the truth, then this place may be the key to every question she seeks.“But this is what I wanted.” She whispered to herself.Or more likely she was trying to convince herself to do so.Her phone rings. When she saw the name registered on the screen, her face hardened. It is her mother. The mother she grew up with, who had been feeding lies to Raquel. The call died down, but when she dialed her number again, Raq
