There wasn't a better idea out there. This was actually happening.
After a full Saturday night and Sunday of researching and brainstorming, we were not able to come up with anything remotely as unique as eleDATE. Besides, Dakota was a stubborn man, and once he made up his mind about something it was damn near impossible to change it.
When my alarm went off on Monday morning, I felt physically ill. My stomach was in knots. I knew that there were some logistics that needed to be worked out before I could actually begin the dates, but I was still dreading meeting with Dakota to discuss the idea.
I sifted through my closet, deciding to wear my black pencil skirt, black strappy heels, and a short sleeve, olive blouse. I figured I'd dress nice today to try and keep a fake sense of confidence while pitching my stupid idea.
Once dressed, I threw some curls in my long hair, pulling it into a messy bun at my neck. I pulled some pieces out of the bun, curling them loosely to frame my face. When I was ready, I shoved down a not-so-nutritious granola bar before grabbing up my work bag and heading out the door.
As I navigated through the familiar streets of Charlotte, I swore the drive to my office building had never felt so long. As if hitting every single red light wasn't bad enough, the familiar drive became even more agitating as I thought about meeting with Dakota. I still couldn't believe that he threatened to fire me. I'd be lying if I said I wan't a little hurt by the notion.
Even after I parked my car and made my way to the elevator I was still being overly dramatic and grumpy. This was a new feeling for me-- dreading coming to work. It was definitely something I didn't want to experience more than once.
As the elevator doors closed I couldn't help but think about this tiny box as the space where I'd be having dates; many, many dates. Now that I was standing in here, the idea seemed even more ridiculous.
"Hold the elevator," a voice called from somewhere in front of me.
I stuck my hand out, stopping the doors from closing just in time. They slowly opened again to reveal that I was now standing face to face with Dakota. Shit.
"Ah, Ms. Adams. Just the writer I wanted to see," he said, strolling into the elevator with all the grace of a professional dancer.
"Mr. Kramer," I greeted, pressing the button to my floor.
"Oh don't bother to stop at your office," Dakota said, reaching over me to press the button for 50. A waft of cologne hit my nose. He always smelled amazing, yet he rarely ever smelled the same. I swear the man collected cologne. In fact, some of us girls made a game out of it, trying to guess which scent he'd wear the following day.
"Oh," I said, "okay." Immediately it became dead quiet in the elevator as we stood near each other in awkward silence. A strange sense of nervousness flooded my body and I couldn't think of anything to say. There truly was something about elevators that created an unavoidable amount of tension between two people. Maybe that's why we came up with this stupid idea in the first place.
"Huh," Dakota chuckled, pulling me from my thoughts.
I cocked an eyebrow at him, inviting him to explain what he was finding amusing.
"I hope you're not this awkward on your dates or this article may not work after all."
I scoffed. "I'm not being awkward, I'm just thinking. You're the one who can't handle silence."
"What are you thinking about?" He asked, staring ahead at our reflection in the shiny doors. He was so tall it made me look extra short beside him, even in my heels.
"The article pitch..." I admitted.
"Well," he started, "it's not so much a pitch anymore as it is working out the logistics. I already told you that your idea was approved."
"Right... well I was hoping that maybe I could have a little more time to come up with something else?"
He looked down at me, his glare harsh and scrutinizing. I could feel my face starting to turn red and I tried my best to look him in the eyes and to act unaffected by his stare. The door pinged open just then, dissipating all the tension as Dakota glided silently towards his desk.
I followed awkwardly behind, standing before him as he settled into his massive desk chair. "Sit down Kyla."
I did as I was told, settling into the chair across from him and setting my bag on the floor by my feet. I didn't like the positioning of this chair... it felt oddly like an interrogation.
"Why don't you want to do your idea?" He asked.
"Um... I just think that I can come up with something better..." I stuttered out, not wanting to admit my insecurities to my boss.
"And I'm telling you that you have a good idea. Not only is it going to push you out of your comfort zone, but it's also incredibly unique. So, my question to you is, why don't you want to do it?"
"I guess I'm just nervous about the whole thing. What if there aren't enough guys that want to do it? What if I go through all this, just to have nothing to show for it in the end?" I ranted.
He blinked at me, scooting his chair in closer to his desk and folding his muscled arms across his chest. "Kyla, this office is filled with single men around your age who I'm sure would be down to be featured in an article, anonymously or not. That isn't an issue. As for having nothing to show for your work, that's impossible. If you go through all this to find out that it didn't work, that you didn't make any connections than so be it. It's an experimental article, and one that if you write it like I know you can, will be very successful."
I nodded. I wasn't sure what to say but he was definitely making some good points.
"If you don't want to write this article Kyla, I will find somebody who does. Understood?"
I nodded again, "Understood."
"Good. Now," he said, "let's talk logistics."
*********
"So you're stuck with the eleDATE idea huh?" Rory asked, trying to conceal a smile.
"Rory try not to look so amused would you? She's clearly freaking out here," Ellie defended.
I plopped down into my own desk, brushing a piece of hair away from my face. "I blame you," I said, directing my comment at Hayden. "It's because of all the shots we took that we came up with this idea, and now I'll be speed dating half the office."
"Oh come on, it's hardly half the office," Hayden chimed in, "Besides, I think it's a great idea. Have you seen the men that work here? Girl, I'd trade places with you in a second!"
"Well, Dakota did offer to find someone else to do the article..."
"Oh that's good, isn't it?" Lydia cut me off.
"No, because he made it sound like I'd lose my job if I wasn't the one doing it."
"Oh yikes, never mind," she sighed.
Cole walked over to me, setting a coffee on my desk. "Figured you could use this today."
I smiled up at him; it was such a thoughtful gesture. "I really could. Thank you, Cole."
"No problem. And just remember this is a good opportunity. If you do this article, you keep your job and write about something interesting," he said.
"And," Ellie chimed in, "you get to date a bunch of hotties! Maybe you'll finally find yourself a boyfriend."
"Yeah maybe. That part is whatever," I stated, taking a quick sip of my hot coffee. "I think the only way I will get through this without having an anxiety attack is if I think of it in a completely professional way. This is just an experiment so that I can write something amazing."
My friends didn't have much to say after my statement so I just continued on. "Besides, I don't believe that I'd be able to catch feelings for someone that I'd only be talking to for such a short period of time."
"Maybe not," Cole said from beside me, "but that's why it's an experiment. Personally, I can't wait to read about it."
"Thanks guys," I said. "So, who wants to help me find men to participate? Dakota said that we should create a questionnaire to hand out to the men in the office that are interested, and then narrow down the guys based on their answers. I'm not supposed to know who the men are, so it's kind of up to you guys to choose who qualifies."
"Oooooo! Can Ellie and I please be in charge!?" Lydia asked, shooting her hand into the air as if waiting to be called on.
I chuckled. "Yes I was hoping the two of you would handle this process. You guys know me, so please pick men that you think I'd actually like in some way."
"We got you," Ellie stated, "how many men are we picking here?"
"Dakota said at least 20 if you can."
I had always found the idea of dating 20 men at once completely absurd... not that it ever stopped me from watching season after season of the Bachelorette. I had to admit the show was entertaining and honestly it seemed pretty glamorous. The problem was, in this situation I was not about to go on extravagant dinner dates, daring adventures, or to overnight suites with these men... I'd be dating them one on one, for 5 minutes at a time, in a freaking elevator.
After discussing some more logistics, I got started creating the questionnaire that I wanted to send out to the interested men. If I had even a shot at connecting with any of them, I wanted to make sure they weren't total scum. Together, Ellie, Lydia, and I came up with the following 5 questions:
1. How old are you and what's your job at Clicked?
2. Why are you interested in participating in "eleDATE?"
3. If chosen, are you okay with your name being used in the article? Yes or No.
4. How long was your longest relationship?
5. Are you ready to start a relationship?
I had wanted to add many more questions, but the girls insisted that this was enough. I didn't want to ask too many questions where nobody would want to fill out the sheet. Besides, I wasn't allowed to look at the men's answers anyway, only Ellie and Lydia could do that.
Once finished, I printed off 30 copies, and set my friends loose in the office to search for candidates. I had to admit, knowing that my 2 best girl friends were in charge of selecting the bachelors did make the concept seem less intimidating. I knew that they wouldn't select anyone who answered like a total creep. I was also a little jealous of the two of them. It seemed like fun to run around gathering up the men; I found myself wishing that I was the one that was hands-off and Lydia was the one doing the dating.
Jealousy aside, today had been one of the longer days at work that I had ever experienced... and I knew we were just getting started.
I had officially become a hermit. Last week was a mess of me planning my article, stressing about dating, and feeling as though I was the one on the "outs." Since Lydia and Ellie were in charge of finding men to participate, they weren't at their desks much. Even Rory, Hayden, and Cole didn't really spend a lot of time with me as they were helping to read through the questionnaires. It kind of felt like the 5 of them all had this inside joke now, and occasionally they would shoot looks my way or try to smother laughter at some of the answers. So, by the time the weekend rolled around, nobody wanted to drink with me for fear they'd let the secrets slip. Thus, ironically, I had become even more antisocial than I was before, even though this whole experiment was aimed at increasing my social capacity. I was laying on by side, buried under my duvet while I stared at the clock on my nightstand. I watched the minutes, knowing that in just 2 minutes my alarm was going to go off, and I wo
"Woah-" a male voice rang out. I felt two arms gripping me at the waist. Instinctively, I grabbed hold of the man's arms to stable myself. "You okay?" He asked. I nodded, "Yes... sorry about that. This blindfold really... I mean.. thank you," I stuttered out. God I was nervous. He chuckled a low, melodious laugh. "I get it. You're good." He released his grip from my waist and I let my hands slip from his muscled arms. Then, I felt the elevator begin to move and I knew this date was started. "So... what's your name?" I asked, stupidly, not knowing how to stand or if I was even facing him."Um... I'm not actually supposed to say. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of the blindfold," he answered. Duh. I could feel my face heating beneath the blindfold. "Oh... right. I'm sorry. I'm just a little in my head right now."There was a moment of silence. It wasn't that he was being awkward, but I could literally feel the awkwardness radiating off of me. "How about we just rapid fire some f
The minute I returned to my seat at my desk my friends were already there, blasting me with questions. I waved them off, not wanting to forget anything about what the man in the elevator had told me about himself. I flipped open my laptop, opening up my OneNote and typing furiously before my memory faded:Bachelor 1: Likes steak, medium rare2 dogs- golden retrievers Likes golf Favorite animal- tiger Large family- close with them Guitar? Thinks I'm pretty Seemed tall and muscular Smelled nice Made me feel calm; easy to talk toHow good was this date out of 10: 8"He told you you're pretty!?" Lydia squealed from behind me, causing me to jump. "Quit reading my notes," I said, closing my laptop. "They're private." She scoffed. "There's no such thing as privacy in our little cubicle. You know that." "Yeah," Hayden chimed in from his desk. He used his feet to push his rolling chair away from the desk so that he was now facing me. "So spill it Ky." I knew I wouldn't be able to
Cole and I slowly made our way to the bar, and I held tight to his hand as he lead the way through the crowd of swaying bodies. Once there, I was lucky enough to find an open bar stool. I pushed myself onto it, ignoring the fact that it was sticky with spilled drink residue. I supposed it didn’t really matter anyway, since I was already coated in alcohol.Cole stood behind me and to my right, leaning forward to place his arm on the bar top, caging me in slightly. "Your shirt is a mess," he said, taking note of the brown soda stain running down the front of my white, cropped t-shirt. Of course I had chosen to wear white; bad call on my part. "I know..." I sighed. "I loved this shirt too." It was much quieter by the bar now, and I could actually hear what Cole was saying to me despite the ringing in my ears from the loud concert music. When the bartender came over, I ordered our drinks and Cole asked for a soda water. I cocked an eyebrow at him. He didn't like soda water... and I
Waking up in the morning, I felt strange about going into work. I wasn't even as nervous as I had been the day before, but I couldn't stop thinking about how Cole thought "eleDate" was a bad idea. I mean, I had thought it was a bad idea before I started it, but after my first date I was actually coming around. It bothered me that Cole expressed a negative opinion after it was too late to do so, and I didn't understand why he was so worried about it. Either way... the dating had to go on. I wasn't excited about it as I pulled my white blouse and black jeans from the closet. I was a little bit hungover- or just super tired from getting home so late on a work night- so I didn't feel like dressing up too much. I paired it with black close-toed heels and some gold jewelry before heading to my car. When I arrived, Ellie was standing at the base of the elevator, blindfold in hand. "Morning," I greeted, my tone indicating that I did not want to be here. "Hungover?" She asked. "Eh... not
When I arrived back at my desk, I was quick to shut down the many questions from my friends with an “I don't wanna talk about it." "Ooo bad one, huh?" Lydia asked, swiveling in her chair so that she was fully facing me now. "Yeah. He was creepy. I thought you guys were gonna pick men that I'd actually like?" I accused. "We tried!" Lydia defended, "I swear, nobody was creepy towards us." “Can confirm,” Ellie agreed, “they all seemed normal enough.”"At least you won't have to date him again," Rory chimed in. "That's true," I sighed, opening up my laptop to type in my notes. Bachelor 2:- CREEPY- Awkward - Need to Eliminate - how good was the date out of 10: 0“Did you tell Mr. Kramer how bad it was?" Ellie asked. I nodded, turning my attention back to her. "I did, yeah. But then I took some of it back." "Why would you take it back?" She pressed."Because he said he was gonna have a talk with the guy, and I really don't want that. This article isn't supposed to cause drama or
"Oh... hi," I said. The thought of riding alone in Dakota's car made me feel nervous. I hadn't done that since we split up eons ago. "No thanks- I'm heading to the bus stop."Even though rain was dripping into my eyes, I could see that his lips turned into a smirk. "You mean the bus stop that's the other direction?" Oh damn... no wonder I couldn't find it. I had always been directionally challenged. He seemed to grow impatient when I didn't respond, so he reached over, flinging the passenger side door open. "Come on- get in." I looked around as if making sure nobody would witness me getting into my bosses car, even though I had put quite a bit of distance between myself and the office already. I noticed rain dripping into his car and honestly, I didn't want to pay for an Uber anyway, so after only a brief moment longer I found myself sliding into the seat. "You don't need to do this... I don't live that close to the office so it'll be out of your way.""It's fine. What kind of bos
Good small talkLikes happy hour Has a son- age 4 Smelled kind of weird Nice A few awkward silences Overall rating out of 10: 5Unfortunately, this was how my notes had been lately. Bachelors 3, 4, and 5 were pleasant, but not as amazing as bachelor 1 or as horrible as bachelor 2. They just seemed like your average men, and the "dates" consisted of similar conversations about nothing in particular. But then... there came bachelor number 6. It was Monday, so I was hoping for an amazing bachelor to kick off my week, similar to how bachelor number 1 had. And thankfully, bachelor number 6 came through. It started off kind of strange- and I wasn't sure my "date" was even going to show up. Ellie had guided me into the elevator, and I held it open while we waited for him. After a minute, she said she was going to go find him. It only took a few seconds longer to feel a male presence enter the elevator. His smooth voice drifted to me, "I'm so sorry I'm late. Traffic was crazy today."
After the crazy weekend I had, I was actually ready to get back to work today. It was Monday, and the last week of phase 1 of my experiment. So far, I'd met a variety of men from the office, some of which really stood out to me, and others... not so much. But, overall I figured the article was coming along as good as to be expected. Yesterday, Ellie came over to help me work out the kinks for phase 2. Clearly, there were men I was going to eliminate - starting with freaking Alan. But once I got the men narrowed down from 20 to 10, I wasn't exactly sure how to proceed. Part of me felt like one more elevator ride just wasn't going to be enough time to make an informed decision to narrow it down to only 5 men. With this in mind, Ellie and I decided that it would be best if each man rode the elevator down with me as well on their date day, instead of just going up. It made sense in theory; week 1 = 1 ride; week 2 = 2 rides, up and down. After that, 5 more will be eliminated. With 5 men l
Lydia was completely passed out before we even got her into the uber. Thankfully, Cole agreed to come back to my place to help me with her, while Rory and Ellie got their own ride back to Rory's place. Once at mine, Cole carried Lydia for me, placing her into my bed. I took her shoes off and slipped a sweatshirt on over her head, leaving her in her dress since I wasn't able to maneuver her that easily. I put a glass of water on the nightstand and placed a trash can by her face, ensuring she was laying on her stomach before I met up with Cole in the living room. "Did she wake up?" Cole asked as he settled onto the couch. I shook my head, biting at my lower lip. "No... I'm worried, Cole. What if she was drugged or something? I've never seen her like this before."He sighed, patting the couch beside him. I hurried over, not even bothering to change out of my own dress before settling in beside him. "I thought the same thing, so I was doing some research while you were getting her set
Before I knew what was even happening, I heard Lydia's unmistakable voice getting louder as she was saying something I couldn't quite hear to the douche of a man beside her. He was raising his volume too as he stared back at her, standing up off his stool so that he towered over her small frame. "Cole," I said, hopping down off my stool and already heading in their direction. It wasn't long before their little scuffle had people from all over the bar looking at them, and I was sure it was only a matter of time before Dakota noticed us. But, none of that mattered when I saw the man reach out, shoving Lydia so hard she would have fallen down if she hadn't crashed into me. I was almost knocked down with her, but was surprised when Rory appeared behind me, stabilizing us both. I felt Lydia shaking in my arms and I could tell she was sobbing. I was quick to drag her away from the scene, making our way to the bathroom. Part of me wanted to stay and fucking unleash my wrath on that ma
After a Friday night well spent, aka fluffy pajamas, ice cream, and binge watching Vampire Diaries, it was finally Saturday night! Even though I love being a home body, there was something about getting all dressed up and experiencing something new that always enticed me. Since this was a cocktail lounge, I pulled out my favorite black cocktail dress. It was plain, sleeveless, and fitted with a slit that ran tastefully up one side. I straightened my usually-wavy hair until it ran down my back in a silky smooth sheet of strawberry blonde. I felt like being a bit more dramatic tonight, so I took my time dusting my eyelids with a smoky blue and shimmery silver shadow, finishing off with a thick swoop of liquid eye liner on the top. To my surprise, my long lashes decided to cooperate with my mascara applicator tonight, and when all was said and done, I had to admit I looked freaking good. Right as I finished up, I heard a knock at my door and I knew my friends were arriving. My apartm
"Ugh..." I groaned and stretched out after turning off my alarm. Getting up the morning after being sick is always the most difficult thing ever. After I got home from work yesterday at literally 10:30 AM, I took 3 ibuprofen, put on my fuzziest pajamas, and slept until I woke up profusely sweating at 5:00 PM. That's right, my fever had broken. I took a shower which made me feel a little bit better, and then moved to my couch where I laid down for another couple hours until there was a knock at my door. I would have panicked had Cole not told me that he DoorDashed me some chicken noodle soup from my favorite Bistro. It was a sweet gesture. He was going to bring it himself but I didn't want to get him sick; and besides, I wasn't feeling up for company. After eating my soup, I fell asleep on my couch while watching Moana, and didn't wake up again until 9, at which point I took a shot of NyQuil, moved back into my bed, and slept uninterrupted until my alarm went off just now. I couldn
It was hard to even focus on what Dakota wanted me to do, but by the expectant look on his face, I knew he probably wanted me to head home. I nodded, pushing myself up off the chair with an incredible amount of effort. My head pounded with the movement, and I squeezed my eyes shut, taking a deep breath. "What's wrong?" Dakota asked, placing a palm on my shoulder as if to steady me. "Just my headache. It was worse when I stood up," I fixed my eyes on his, trying to sound convincing. "I'm fine though. I just need to get my stuff from my desk and I'll leave."Dakota nodded, but when I began heading to the elevator he started walking with me. "You don't need to come with me," I continued, "I'm not going to fall over."His full lips tugged up at the corners as if he was hiding a smile. "I know. I'm going to walk you to your car anyway to ensure you actually go home." I sighed, but I didn't argue. He was a stubborn man. And also, he was my boss, so I really had no authority or reasoning
This week was one of the longer work weeks I'd had in a long time. After Monday's date, it had really gone downhill. Tuesday's date was sick, so most of the ride he spent coughing, sneezing, and blowing his nose while I backed myself into the far corner. It wasn't his fault... he couldn't help being sick, but it didn't exactly help him win me over. Then on Wednesday, my date had literally tried to kiss me at the end. I could feel the wind as he leaned in, and at the last minute I turned my head, receiving a wet, sloppy kiss on the cheek instead. I wasn't pleased with his advances, but I also didn't feel unsafe at all. I understood it. This guy seemed cocky from our conversation, and although I didn't feel any connection towards him, I understood that he probably didn't hear "no" from women very often. The problem was, I couldn't see him. He had to let his personality do the work for him, and unfortunately, all I picked up on was arrogance. I'm not opposed to kissing men during this
This day was dragging, and since I had left my coffee in my car, and was too lazy to go get it, I felt my eyes drooping by the time I finished replying to all of my emails. I turned to look at my friends who were all hard at work, or at least they outwardly looked that way. "Does anyone want to go get a coffee with me?" I was met with a few head shakes but Cole agreed to go with me. Normally, my friends went crazy for coffee, but I'll be the first to admit that the coffee here kind of sucks... which was why we usually brought our own. I made a mental note to bring up my qualms about the shitty coffee during my next meeting with Dakota. Again, not that he'd listen, but it was worth a shot.Cole and I made our way down to floor 25, making small talk about our articles.... excluding EleDate. He never asked about my dates and I never bothered to tell him about them. For some reason, this article still got in the way of our carefree, lighthearted friendship. Once we stepped into the bre
The rest of my weekend went by quickly and without drama. I had spent most of Sunday recapping my 10 bachelors that I had already gone out with, making some decisions about what I was thinking of doing come elimination time. My rough draft of my list went as follows: Bachelor 1- move to round 2Bachelor 2- eliminate! (And maybe report if he keeps showing up places)Bachelor 3- potential Bachelor 4- potential Bachelor 5- potential Bachelor 6- move to round 2Bachelor 7- boring Bachelor 8- move to round 2Bachelor 9- No show = eliminated Bachelor 10- boring Bachelors 1, 6, and 8 were the 3 men that stood out to me the most these last 2 weeks, but the others were just average. I was hoping for more "wow" factor moving into the next 2 weeks, although I wasn't even sure what that meant. This morning I was awake before my alarm, so I had extra time to get ready. I put some fresh curls into my hair, applied a full face of makeup, and slipped into a classy, tight-fitting, blue dress.
