Elaina stared out the window at the hills and farmlands that passed by. So far they had been on the road for five hours and still not a single town in sight.
Chase had insisted he had known where he was going since he had travelled to the other temples before. Never being out of her own town Elaina had to take his word for it since she didn’t know the way.
Neither she nor Chase had said anything since starting off.
So many questions lay restless in Elaina’s mind, but she just couldn’t bring herself to wonder them aloud.
Chase had been nice enough not to try to start conversation, instead he was content in leaving her to her thoughts.
Stars blazed brightly overhead, all them easy to see without the lights of the city blocking them out.
Elaina remembered being a child and laying in the woods while camping out, staring up at the night sky and thinking how small she felt staring at the un
Later Elaina and Chase sat on the hood of the car watching as the remains of the burlack beasts burned before them.Elaina’s leg throbbed but she tried to ignore it, instead she looked to Chase who still looked green in the face. She was pretty sure that he was going to end up throwing up at some point, but he just stared ahead stoically. Since stitching her leg up he had refused to look at her and she was beginning to wonder if his little crush on her was finally gone. A twinge of disappointment tugged at her, but she insisted that it was for the best.A crackling sounded from the fire as the flames burst brighter, swirls of green and purple overtaking the whole thing. Elaina had never seen anything like it.The flames roared loudly and Elaina found herself sweating from the heat. Then just as quickly as it happened it was over, nothing left now except a small smolder.Elaina looked to Chase now who was stil
Elaina emerged from the bathroom steam flowing out in puffs. She had nothing but a soft white bathrobe wrapped around her, her hair hanging flat around her shoulders. Chase who had gone three days without sleeping snored lightly on the couch. He still had on his dirty clothes and shoes. A book sat open in his lap. Shaking her head Elaina crept into the bedroom closing the door behind her.Alone she sat down on the bed and examined the room around her. The sea green walls held pictures of the ocean, waves crashing onto shore, lightening flashing a lighthouse, all seemingly ordinary things along the coast. The sound of movement in the living room caught her attention. Standing she snuck a peek, Chase must have moved and knocked the book he was holding onto the ground. Sighing Elaina shut the door again and laid down, exhaustion finally claiming her. The last thought running through her head as
Elaina didn’t know exactly how to get back to the Northern temple, but she drove letting her instincts tell her where to go. On and on she drove taking no notice to anything passing by her. Night turned into day and then day turned back into night. Adrenaline pumping she continued to push forward. The only thing keeping her going was her need to make sure that there was still time to save everyone that meant the most to her.Only stopping long enough to fill up on gas she arrived in familiar territory early on the second day. She pushed her car for all it was worth urging it to go faster even knowing that it couldn’t.Finally she reached her destination, skidding to a stop she took in the scene before her. No longer stood the temple of the white, instead flames roared towards the sky. People ran in horror trying their best to alert anyone who didn’t already know.Elaina jumped ou
The death toll from Rathial’s attack was great claiming the lives of over two hundred warriors and all the monks including Brother Benjamin who had been ambushed by a Serpent beast while trying to hide. Most of the older warriors spent the next day building pillars to burn the bodies of the warriors that hadn’t been claimed by the fire. It was a tedious task piling up the kindling taking up most of the day. They worked fast to ensure that the pillars would be set ablaze at sunset, a proper warrior send off. Whoever wasn’t busy cleaning bodies and building pillars searched slowly through the remains of the sanctuary trying to see if they could find anything remaining of their possessions.Elaina sat alone underneath a tree watching as people moved about. Charise sat close beside her clutching her hand.“It’s almost like watching a movie isn’t it?” Charise asked quietly now her gaze
Oliver sent word to the Brothers from the West and South the next morning hoping it would get to all of them in time. He explained to all about the attack and Rathial’s warning. After sending off his letters he made plans to visit the elders personally.Samantha hadn’t been happy about the idea wanting her family to stay together through this, but in the end rationale won out over emotion. Elaina watched numbly as they had a teary good bye, Samantha standing in the road for a long time watching as Oliver drove off.Plans had been made to stay underground in a secret facility built specifically for emergencies. Brother Benjamin had managed to tell Samantha where to find it before his death.Digging around in the rubble left over from the fire they were able to find the secret hatch. Musty air greeted them as they descended down stairs so old they felt like they could collapse at any minute. T
Elaina stood in the middle of a square, all the buildings around her burned fiercely. Above burlack beasts in troves let out heart wrenching cries. People ran screaming as the beasts dove towards them. Too shocked to move Elaina watched as the beasts ripped at the innocents. A scream threatened to leave her throat, but it would not come. Up ahead she could see a wall of shadow, slowly making its way towards her.Drawing her sword she readied herself for the attack. The wall moved slowly taking its time to torture her. More flames blazed around her lighting the faces of the duio warriors that were coming. All their faces seemed to be grey and slowly decaying, some having holes in their cheeks and jaws, bone showing through. Their mouths hung open revealing rotted teeth. Their eyes stared blankly ahead, glazed over and unseeing.Bile rose in Elaina’s throat a
Elaina spent most of the day in her room, mainly because there was nothing else to do. Another part of it being she was trying to avoid Chase. After she finished her meal with Charise and Samantha she hurried away without explanation. As she sat alone she continued to try to sort through exactly what she would say to Chase when the time came. She liked him more than she wanted to admit to herself and knew that it would hurt to tell him that she couldn’t be with him in the way he was wanting. She knew he would try to fight it and didn’t know if she was strong enough to not let him convince her. Charise had stopped by only once to ask if she wanted to practice hand to hand in the small dojo of their hideout, but Elaina had declined saying that she wasn’t feeling well. Charise hadn’t pushed it, which was really nice of her and left shortly after.Along with the Chase situation she w
“Welcome back little warrior.” Rathial’s voice echoed in Elaina’s head. “I told you, you would soon be with your parents.” Elaina looked around her at the pillars of fire, rocks chipping and falling into motes of burning hot lava. Stilamites hung from the stone ceiling above her. Little black creatures scuttled over her feet. She tried to move away from them, but her body wouldn’t cooperate. “Oh that’s so cute, you’re still trying to fight it.” Rathial laughed. “Don’t you know where you are?” He waved an arm out as smoke billowed up from behind him. Large red eyes formed and focused on Elaina, they blinked once and then were gone. Shuffling sounded behind her as cold hands clasped her arms. A yelp escaped her lips involuntarily. “Don’t worry, they won’t hurt you.” Rathial said idly crossing his arms. “Unless I command them to anyway. I didn’t bring you here to kill you.” His eyes flashe
Six years later....Elaina watched as Carson and Lianna played in the field just beyond the crystal caves entrance. The little boys curly white hair swayed in the soft breeze as he tried with all his might to swipe it out of his face. Beside him his little sister picked a flower and shoved it at his face while giggling. Swatting the flower the boy attempted to try to act tough.Chuckling Elaina limped forward to join her children. After so many years she still couldn't stop herself from looking down at the metal leg she was now sporting and smiling, it was after all a reminder of the greatest victory of her life.Lianna was the first to hear her approach. Turning she locked her big green eyes that resembled Chase's on Elaina before giving a big toothy grin."Mama!" The little girl called jumping up and running to her. "Mama, look what I picked for Carson!"Elaina smiled at her daughter, "I saw i
"You did well child." Ezra's soft voice floated to Elaina as she hovered peacefully in the darkness. "But now is not your time to leave.""What do you mean?" Elaina asked looking around only to find emptiness. "I've already died.""Your human self died." Ezra corrected. "Your dark self has not." He continued."But I'm so tired." Elaina sighed as she felt herself slipping again."Child, I still have something to ask of you." Ezra continued drawing Elaina's attention to him."What's that?" Elaina asked."I need you to lead the underworld now." Ezra said carefully. "With Rathial gone there is no one to take his place, except you of course.""What do you mean?" Elaina demanded. "How could I possibly do something like that? What about my friends and Chase?"Laughing Ezra began to take form as Elaina's darkness turned to the lush green flower field again. Attempting to stand Elaina collapsed,
Rathial snarled at Elaina as she began to move towards him. Behind her lay a pile of dead dark warriors that hadn't been able to hold their own against the infuriated Elaina."So glad to see you coward." Elaina beamed as she continued moving forward. "Thought you'd be safe hiding down here did you?"Feeling her rage building Elaina lunged at Rathial slashing her sword towards his chest. Easily dodging Rathial cackled as Elaina righted herself ready for the next attack."What do you expect to do letting your anger get the best of you?" Rathial taunted. "You came here looking to easily die didn't you."Snapping his fingers he tried to use his power against Elaina, but it didn't work. With her human self gone she was now immune to any and all dark powers, after all she was amongst the dark herself now."That trick won't work on me this time." It was Elaina's turn to laugh.Caught off guard Rathial didn't have
Elaina woke earlier than Chase the next morning. Sounds of people beginning their day could be heard just out in the hallway as she quickly searched for her clothes. After Chase had fallen asleep the night before, Elaina had made a decision and now she planned on setting that choice into action. Fully dressed she looked to Chase once more before quickly rushing out of the room.As Elaina made her way through the bunkard she ignored the glares that she recieved from the few warriors that were roaming about. Their looks of disgust and distrust no longer mattered to her, after all she was leaving this place anyway.Waving she quickened her pace and hurried up the stairs and out into the open air beyond. The sky remained a bloody red above as ash had begun to fall. Taking in the scene Elaina strengthened her resolve. She was no longer going to wait around for Rathial to come to her, instead she was going to go to him.
"What's going on?" Christopher asked as Elaina and Chase entered the room. He had been lounging on his bed reading through a book on mythical creatures when they arrived. "Why is Elaina here?""Are you using that to learn more about yourself?" Elaina asked ignoring Christopher's questions and snatching the book to examine it. "Look up abaasy.""I know." Christopher huffed taking the book back. "Why are you here?""I wanted to talk to her alone." Chase said giving Christopher a pointed look.Taking the hint Christopher grudgingly got up and stomped towards the door. Giving Chase an annoyed glance he walked out slamming the door behind him."Was that really necessary?" Elaina asked keeping her gaze fixed on the door. "Does he not know about your parents?""Not many know." Chase admitted before motioning for Elaina to have a seat. "It happened so long ago that the younger warrior's weren't old enough to
"You should have fought back." Samantha lectured as she worked on patching up Elaina's more severe wounds. As Elaina had insisted earlier most had begun to heal already, at least the ones that weren't so bad. Elaina didn't know if she should be thankful for her new quick healing ability or be sad since it meant that she truly no longer was a human."If I fought back would it make them trust me?" Elaina asked instead catching Samantha off guard."Would you be able to earn their trust if you died?" Samantha countered shoving a stitch through a particularly severe wound on Elaina's shoulder."I can't die again Samantha." Elaina pointed out.Frowning she tried to come to terms with the fact that she couldn't even feel the needle going through her skin, Elaina let out a long breath."You don't know that for sure." Samantha said as she finished her suturing."I'm technically dead." Elaina countered.Samantha stopped what she wa
The crowd gathered around Elaina had grown immensely and had backed her into a wall. Keeping her expression calm she stared ahead waiting to see exactly what these people intended to do to her."You shouldn't look so cocky still monster." The man who had started the whole ordeal bellowed as the group behind him agreed."Pathetic." Elaina hissed. "Picking on a defenseless woman.""I don't see a defenseless woman." The man laughed. "Only a monster."Elaina couldn't help but laugh at the mans words. How was she the monster when all of them were the ones ganging up on her like a bunch of savages?"I need you to move now." Elaina said moving forward. "I need to find Samantha and Oliver.""You have no business with our leaders monster." The man snapped lunging forward ready to fight Elaina.Stepping to the side she allowed the man to topple into the wall she had just been backed against. Not botheri
"Do you truly think you can defeat me?" Rathial laughed as Elaina lunged at him with her trident."Don't underestimate me, you owe me three lives." Elaina growled as a blue ball of energy shot from the end of the trident slamming into Rathial's chest. "You took people that were precious from me!"Elaina could feel the fire within her growing as she spoke of Charisse and her parents. Rage flared deep in her heart as the eletrictiy at the end of her trident crackled and sparked flaring as fire made its way up the staff."What is this?" Rathial demanded eyes widening.Instead of responding Elaina growled moving forward once more slamming the hilt of the Trident into Rathial's gut sending him flying backwards. Jumping on top of him Elaina grabbed hold of his throat and began to squeeze as her need to kill grew."So cute." Rathial coughed cackling as Elaina tightened her grip. "I am not like a normal person that can be killed thi
The next day came in a blaze of red and orange, the sky above had completely lost its blue hue and was left with a red tint as if reflecting all the blood that was being spilt around them. Looking up Elaina squinted her eyes as she spotted what looked like ash beginning to fall."Ash storm?" She murmured holding out a hand and allowing some of the grey substance to land on her palm. "The end is getting nearer."Beside her Chase sucked in a harsh breath, "What did you say?""When the sky turns red and ash begins to fall to the earth, the dark lord will take his rightful place, and the whole world will be rebuilt in chaos." Elaina recited. "Ash is beginning to fall, the sky has turned red, and the earth has begun to break apart. We are running out of time.""Did Ezra give you any advice on what to do?" Chase asked Elaina as his face began to turn pale."We must defeat Rathial." Elaina responded as if it was the simplest thing
