Isla's POV
After a heavy discussion about the herbs and the murders and learning more about both the herbs from Lucas, I knew Nightspire Bloom wouldn't be easy to investigate. But Mandrake... that was the center of it all. Well, that should be our primary focus.
"Mandrake. Let's start by finding out who has been buying these secretly. Maybe then, we can have our answers..." I sighed.
He gave me a small, tired smile. "Just... be careful. You know how dangerous this can be. Whoever is behind this seems to have their eyes on you now."
I nodded, knowing the weight of the situation. Honestly, if I hadn't been dragged into this situation, perhaps I would have stayed in the corner like always. But now, I had to go to the bottom of all of this to clear my name.
That's when my eyes darted outside the window, and I realized I had been there for a while now.
I stood up, feeling a little uneasy. "I will visit again soon. And I will update you on everything. Just focus on recovering."
I was about to leave, when he grabbed my hand, pulling me back on my chair beside his bed. Lucas’s expression shifted slightly, and something gleamed in his eyes. I wasn't sure why he was looking like that at me, like he couldn't bear the distance between us.
“I may be gone for a bit. I have to return to West Fall Pack to settle some issues.” He suddenly dropped a bomb, making me flinch for a second.
The air between us suddenly felt heavier. His eyes were unusually serious, a tension I hadn’t seen before. I frowned, confusion swirling in my mind. “What do you mean?” I asked, pulling my hand away gently. "How long are you planning to go?"
His gaze softened for a moment. But there was still a lingering tension in his expression. “I wouldn't go if this was avoidable. You know that, right?" He pressed his hand on me as if assuring me, or perhaps himself. I didn't know what to make out of it, but I was equally bothered by his untimely departure. He had just come, and we had just become friends. So losing an ally at this point could be fatal for my investigation.
"I could be gone for a few days, maybe more. I will try to be quick.” He added, his tone dropping low.
I forced a smile, trying to brush off the weight of his words and my selfishness. “Of course. Handle your pack’s business. I will be fine here.”
But the truth was, I wasn’t sure how fine I would be. Lucas was one of the few people I felt I could lean on. The idea of him leaving left me feeling… alone.
His eyes narrowed, studying me intently. "Isla, they are targeting you. And you have found out too much already. So that couldn't be good. So promise me that you will be careful.”
My heart pounded at that. The way he was looking at me was slightly confusing. But I quickly brushed it off. Maybe he was genuinely concerned about my safety after everything that had happened.
"I will be safe, Lucas. I promise," I forced a smile, hiding my confusion behind a light laugh.
"Isla," his voice softened, "wait for me to come back."
My heart skipped a beat at the weight of his words. His eyes went small as if feeling a heavy loss, even remorse. I could tell he didn't want to go. I quickly hid my opinion behind a light laugh, trying to ease the tension. "I will. Don’t worry, my good friend. Handle your pack affairs well." I teased, tapping him lightly on the head before slipping my hand away.
But as I left, I couldn’t shake the feeling something had shifted in Lucas, and I wasn’t sure what it meant.
As I approached my neighborhood, I noticed the disturbance before I even got there. My heart sank when I saw a group of patrol guards gathered near the corner of the street, their faces grim. That was Stefan's house! I ran towards the commotion. Alarm bells rang in my mind as I quickened my pace.
Something was wrong.
As I got closer, I saw two guards dragging Stefan, bound and beaten. He had several bruises all over his face, and he was shivering with fear. My heart lurched. “What are you doing?” I shouted, rushing towards them. “Stop! What’s going on?” I protested, trying to pull them away from Stefan.
That's when someone pulled me away and their onslaught on Stefan increased.
"Stefan! Why are you doing this to him?" I yelled, pleading with my eyes.
"Isla, leave!" Stefan grunted in pain, but he was still worried about me. It only made me feel guiltier.
The guards didn’t even glance in my direction. And that’s when I saw Adrian. His eyes radiated with hatred and anger, his presence commanding and dangerous as always.
“What are you doing to him?” I demanded, my voice trembling. I looked at Stefan’s bruised face, the rawness of the ropes cutting into his wrists. “Adrian, please ask them to stop!”
His eyes, though, were what froze me in place. Dark, cold, and full of anger that terrified me. His gaze burned as it locked onto mine. His wolf was close to the surface, barely restrained.
"Adrian, this isn't right!"
He didn’t answer me right away. Instead, he stared, his lips curling slightly. His silence felt more threatening than any words.
“He is being taken in for questioning,” Adrian finally said, his voice low and dangerous.
“What?” My breath caught, disbelief rushing over me. “You can’t be serious.”
He took a step closer, his eyes locking onto mine, unwavering. “Do I look like I am joking?”
And then, with a flick of his hand, Adrian signaled the guards to take Stefan away.
In a desperate attempt to stop, I ran towards them, extending both of my hands in front of them. I knew pleading with them was going to be futile. So I looked at Adrian, my eyes reflecting his coldness.
"Stop, this nonsense! You can't take him away for no reason!"
Isla's POV"Stop! What are you doing?" I glared at Adrian, my heart racing. There was no way I was letting him take Stefan.I looked at Stefan, slightly nodding at him. I didn't need words to tell him that I had his back. He was tied up, panic etched across his face.Adrian came across, now taking the cuff in his hand, seething with fury.“Get your hands off him!” I shouted, my voice trembling. Adrian didn’t even glance my way, his gaze locked onto Stefan as if he were prey.“Enough!” Adrian’s voice sliced through the air like a knife. “We have evidence. He is the one who bought the mandrake. He’s behind all of it, the murders, Isla. Your sister’s death.”I shook my head, the words hitting me like a wave. For a second, I was baffled, unable to formulate any words. How could Stefan have anything to do with Mandrake? Why would he ever hurt Elara? This didn’t add up at all. I knew Stefan. I know he wasn’t capable of something like this.So when Adrian dragged Stefan, my walls were up.St
"Fine," Adrian spat. "Then you can go to prison with him."Isla's POVI scoffed, feeling hurt, despite knowing very well he didn't care about anyone except Elara. He didn't even flinch when he said that, his eyes looking at me with fury. But he had no idea when I offered to go to jail, it wasn't out of some naive impulse. It was because I knew him better than anyone. Stefan was not capable of anything so gruesome. But Stefan suddenly came in between us and shut me down so quickly I barely had time to process his words."Don’t," Stefan said, his voice tight, eyes burning with the weight of the situation. "You shouldn’t make a decision like that for me, especially when it has nothing to do with you.`"I clenched my fists, frustration bubbling inside me. "But it has everything to do with me! You’re my best friend, Stefan. I know you. You would never..." Stefan’s eyes softened for a second as if he was surprised. "Isla, you don't have to go to jail to help me..."Before I could respond,
Adrian's POVThe rumors spread like sickness, tainting every corner of the pack. Wherever I went, I could hear the whispers."Did you hear about Isla and Stefan?""What a pair of adulterers!""I always knew Isla had something to do with it.""Isla is probably just using Stefan." And the rumors only get murkier and more brutal. It made my blood boil. I couldn’t stop the jealousy that gnawed at me, either. Why Stefan? Why did she have to choose him? She was responsible for this ugly situation by doing this. But there was this part of me that felt a deeper rage. No matter how angry I was at her, no matter how confused I felt about her choices... Hearing those disgusting whispers about Isla was more than I could stand. A voice inside me kept nagging that she didn't deserve such hatred.I gritted my teeth as I stormed towards my office, my mind reeling, my heart restless.A message came through just then. My father, the Alpha, was coming for an update. Of course, word would have already r
Isla's POVWhen they let me go, I could hardly believe it.How could I? The last few days had been a whirlwind of accusations, cold glares, and isolation. They all looked at me as if I was a murderer. And the rumors... They reached out to me even if I was locked. When I thought, things would get even worse, I was suddenly released due to lack of evidence. Without a word of explanation for how I was no longer convicted, Adrian’s men simply escorted me back to my house. The relief I should have felt was overshadowed by confusion and guilt. I still didn't know what had happened to Stefan. What had changed? Or did Adrian find any new evidence?I had to know.As soon as they left me at the door, I ran, my feet carrying me straight to Adrian’s office. I needed to know the truth. Stefan had been my only friend in this wretched place. How could I enjoy this freedom or rest without knowing what they had done to him?I burst through Adrian’s door, barely catching my breath. He was busy with som
Isla's POV"What are you doing?" I managed to mumble, confused, feeling something stir deep inside my heart.Adrian's expression had shifted, softening in a way I had never thought was possible. Unlike his usual harsh and distant touch, it was now gentle. He wiped my tears like he cared about me, his hands lingering too long, even after that. And his eyes narrowed with pain to see me hurt. And then, I could hear my heart pounding in my ears loudly. My stomach flip-flopped, forming a knot inside my chest. A wave of emotions that I couldn't even explain coursed through me, rampaging through my insides. Everything faded, and all I could focus on was him... his supple lips... his squared jaw...And the way he looked at me, made my wolf stir inside me, equally drawn to him.But then he pulled back and I knew better. He accused me of having feelings for Stefan. How could he after everything that happened between us? How could he after I told him so many times that Stefan was only my friend?
Isla's POV“What are you doing?” I yelled, shoving Adrian away from Stefan.I was shocked to see Adrian here, my heart pounding in my chest. And the way his gaze flickered between me and Stefan, as if accusing me of cheating, weighed heavy on my shoulders. The air was thick with tension. I could feel the raw, untamed rage radiating off him. But Stefan stood on the ground too, sneering at him, almost challenging him.Adrian growled, his eyes red with fury, to show his rage and panic surged through me. He was not going to let Stefan intimidate him. He glared at Stefan like a predator ready to pounce.“Didn’t I tell you not to even think about taking Isla with you?” Adrian’s voice was low and dangerous, dripping with possessiveness. His fists clenched at his sides as he stepped closer towards Stefan, which sent shivers down my spine.Stefan chuckled a bitter smile as if mocking him. He stood tall, unflinching. He looked straight into Adrian’s eyes and scoffed. “What right do you have to
Isla’s POVThe night had fallen by the time I made it back home. But as I made my way home, I began to feel more restless. Home should be a place for comfort, but for me, it was different. The familiar sense of deep emptiness settled in.But today was different. As I stepped through the door, the house, which had never truly felt like home, was surprisingly lit. I froze when I saw my parents waiting for me at the dining table.I blinked, confused. The way they looked at me... it felt different. And there, on the dining table, was a meal they had prepared. For me. Simple but intentional. The weight of their sudden attention tugged at something deep inside me. For a fleeting second, I felt something I hadn’t in a long time, a flicker of hope. I wondered if they had finally realized I was their only daughter now and had finally decided to appreciate me better. But that hope died quickly when I looked into their eyes. The same doubt. The same suspicion. My brother sat at the end of the ta
Isla’s POV"Adrian," my lips trembled as I spoke his name.Moonlight filtered through the window, casting a soft glow over Adrian, highlighting his features as he looked at me with an intensity that made my heart race.He stepped closer, his body towering over mine. And I didn't stop him. The heat of him wrapped around me like a blanket, pulling me in. When his fingers grazed my cheek, the roughness of his touch sent shivers down my spine. I pulled him closer, closing the gap for a kiss. And then as if teasing me, his thumb traced my bottom lip, his gaze darkening with desire.“You have no idea what you do to me,” Adrian murmured, his voice low. His hands slid down my arms, pulling me closer, his hot breath fanning the sides of my neck.Well, he had no idea what he was doing to me. I couldn’t speak, couldn’t think, and couldn't ignore this overwhelming feeling inside me.I gasped and taking this opportunity, he captured my lips in a sizzling kiss that made my vision blur. It wasn’t so
