"What are you doing here" I asked curious
"Can we talk," Jonathan asked
"In my office" I ushered him as he followed behind, we both stepped into my office. "You can sit anyway," I told him, returning to my desk and paperwork
"So about this morning, am sorry, I never knew you both were that close," he said
"He's my boyfriend, Jonathan, going around shirtless and sprouting out about being my ex was not part of the terms or what I signed up for" I quickly reminded him.
"I know, I know, I just don't trust him" My eyes stared at him.
"You don't trust Matthew and why is that, you barely know him," I asked curiously
"I don't need to know him to know he is a good pretender and up to no good," his voice laced with bitterness and concern
"Just say you are jealous Jonathan, that would be understandable" I mocked
"Jealous?" he scoffed
"Yes jealous, cause you know he is better than you in every possible way" I added
Jonathan sighed and looked down at the floor. "Fine, I might be jealous," he admitted reluctantly, I was shocked, he was not the type to quickly admit to his feelings. "But it is not just that, There's something off about him, I can feel it, I don't want to see you get hurt"
I leaned back in my chair and crossed my arms. "Look, Jonathan, I appreciate your concern, you are in no position to tell me that since you did a pretty good job at, hurting me"
"I trust Matthew, he has been nothing but supportive and kind to me, and besides, I thought we moved on past this jealousy and insecurity," I asked
"Insecurity," he asked
"Yes, I thought you understood the terms of no meddling in my personal life"
Jonathan walked over to the window and stared out the city below. "I know, I know, I've been working on it. But seeing him this morning, seeing the way you two were with each other, it just stirred up old feelings"
I stood up and walked over to join Jonathan by the window. "You have to understand that Matthew and I have a different kind of connection. It's not just about physical attraction. We've built a strong emotional bond, and I don't want to let that go."
Jonathan turned to face me, his expression softening. "I do understand, and I want you to be happy. I still don't trust him"
I smiled, "well that's your problem to do with Jonathan,"
He reached out and squeezed my hand. "Just promise me you'll be careful, okay? I don't want to see you get hurt."
I nodded, grateful for Jonathan's concern. "I promise, I'll always have my guard up. But for now, please leave, I would like to focus on work. I have a deadline to meet,"
Jonathan chuckled and nodded. "You and your attitude"
As he turned to leave the office, I couldn't help but feel happy about his sudden concern and jealousy.
The day passed in a blur. I desperately attempted to reach my mom, but she didn't answer. Frustrated, I decided to give Joy a call instead.
"Hey Joy, is my mom at home?" I questioned, anxiety creeping into my voice.
"No, she mentioned that she was on her way to your place with the Twins," she replied casually, unaware of the panic that had suddenly consumed me.
"She did what?" I sputtered out, abruptly ending the conversation and racing to my car. I slammed on the gas pedal, speeding home.
What on earth was she thinking? That woman was going to be the death of me. Pulling into the parking lot, I jumped out of the car and raced towards the elevator. My heart was pounding, my mind racing. There was no way my mom and daughters could meet Jonathan.
I stepped into the apartment my eyes stared at my mom, whose eyes burnt with anger and displeasement, Jonathan stood at the kitchen counter, his eyes on the Twins
"Mom" I called her softly, walking towards where she stood, I held her arm, my eyes pleading that she didn't tell him about the Twins, she blinked assuring me she didn't, I fell to the floor, relieved.
"What is he doing here" my mom's voice was cold as I turned my head and stared at her.
"He's my new tenant" I answered
My mom burst out in laughter, alerting the Twins who were busy asking Jonathan a series of questions.
"Are you my mom's new boyfriend?" Tina asked
"What happened to Uncle Matthew" Tiara added along
"You rented out your vacant room to your ex-husband, the same ex-husband, who didn't care less about your reputation" she yelled
"Mrs snow" Jonathan called but my Mom cut him short
"I don't want to hear it, Jonathan. You have no place in my daughter's life."
I stood up, feeling a mix of anger and confusion. My mom had always been protective of me, but this was an extreme reaction. I needed to understand why she was so against Jonathan being here.
"Mom, can we please talk about this? I know you have your concerns, but let me explain."
She looked at me with a mixture of disappointment and frustration. "You're too forgiving, dear. You always have been. But I won't stand by and watch you get hurt again."
I took a deep breath, trying to keep my emotions in check. "I understand your worry, Mom. But it's not what you think, we are not back together."
My mom sighed and shook her head. "I just... I don't want history to repeat itself. And I certainly don't want your girls to witness any of it." she whispered in my ear
I nodded, realization sinking in. "I promise, Mom, I will always prioritize the safety and well-being of the Twins. I will take the necessary actions to protect them. but he is not back in my life Mom and neither will he know about the Twins" I whispered back
She looked at me for a long moment, her anger slowly fading. "I hope you mean that, dear. I truly do."
"I do, Mom. I love you, and I appreciate your concern. But please, just trust me."
She sighed again, her expression softening. "Okay, fine. But I'll be watching, both of you. And if anything goes wrong, I won't hesitate to step in."
I smiled, grateful for her acceptance, even if it came with conditions. "Thank you, Mom. I promise I won't let you down."
With that, we both turned our attention back to the Twins and Jonathan, who were watching our conversation uncertainly. It wasn't going to be easy, but I was determined to make this work.
"I guess I was not needed in the conversation, they are beautiful, your daughters," Jonathan said his eyes still fixed on them.
I felt a knot in my stomach, God I was lying to him, hiding the truth from him, I felt bad, and suddenly I felt a hand on mine, I stared at it, it was my mom's.
A soft smile appeared on my lips.
"What did you do this time Jonathan, another scandal, seems like you are running," my mom asked her voice filled with contempt
"Running is a strong word, Mrs. Snow, I wouldn't put it that way," he grins as he slowly knelt on one knee, his eyes fixed on Tiara and Tina
"How old are you guys," he asked
"We are 5 years old" Tiara replied
I quickly pull them away, hiding them behind me. "You should take them, home mom, it getting late" I turned to face her
"Come on girls, it's time to go," I quickly tell them
"But we want to stay," they both say at once
"Mom, please" I begged her
"Come on girls, mummy seems busy with a friend, let's not disturb her. "let's go home and order some ice cream and watch Barbie" She pulled them away towards the door
"I will call before you guys go to bed, I promise" I yelled behind me as I watched them, head out a sign of relief watched over me as I headed upstairs.
"Where is your handbag" Jonathan asked
I stared at my hand, ah that's right, I left it in my car, why heading up to avoid the chaos, that would have happened if I hadn't intervein
"Right, I left it in my car, I will go get it," I said, turning back as I headed toward the door.
Jonathan grabbed me by the arms, pulling me close, I stared at him in surprise, "What-what are you doing"
"Is there something I should know Claire?" he asked his tone filled with suspicion
"What do you mean," I managed to say, not gaining away how scared I was. " please let me go, I don't know what you are talking about" I pulled away, heading towards the door but his voice cut me short
"Whatever it is you are hiding, I will find out Claire, and trust me, it won't be friendly, especially when it has to do with what belongs to me"
I knew I was in for the longest year of my life, how long would I be able to keep lying
"Don't worry, I have nothing to hide"
(Claire's pov) There I sat in the car, trying to get myself, I was still shaken from the whole incident. I rested my head on the steering wheel. I stepped into the apartment, my eyes scanning the entire house, I guess Jonathan must have gone to bed. Heading into the kitchen, I unlocked the refrigerator and took out an orange juice. I stared at it, before pouring it into the glass, I needed Jonathan far away from me, he was ruining my peace and I didn't sign up for this. Lifting my head, Jonathan stood in front of me, his gaze cold, I guess he wasn't asleep, so I ignored him, taking a sip of my juice. "Do you want something," I asked "I never knew you got remarried after the divorce," he asked, his eyes filled with doubts "Well we all had to move on Jonathan," I told him "Was that the reason you wanted a divorce, because you were already cheating on me," he accused "I guess we were both not sincere in our marriage," I said, trying to hide how disappointed I was that he had the
(Claire's POV)It has been two days since Jonathan stormed out of the house in anger, two days of peace, and two days of not dealing with his constant rumbling about Matthew being a two-sided jerk.It was exhausting fighting over the same thing. I know he was worried about me, but he shouldn't.I don't care where he was or what he was doing currently, but I don't need him back in my life, ruining my peace and happiness, all for his selfish reasons. There I sat in my mom's dining hall. The twins had camp to attend, so I quickly dropped them off. I needed a place to relax and cool off. My mom walked in. Her eyes did not leave mine. she took a seat next to me."Let me guess: Jonathan caused another problem," she said I smiled at her as I tried to hide the truth."Mum, Do you think I'm desperate for love?" I asked her, I know I've been through a lot, especially after six years since the divorce, but I deserve happiness. Why do I feel like whenever good things are about to happen to me? Jo
(Jonathan pov)She stood up heading to the kitchen as I watched her. That was intense, I smirk."What was the sound?" I yelled from the living room"A pan, I think it fell off" she answeredI watched her walk back into the living room but this time she headed straight to her room. "Hey" I called but was ignoredI needed to stay far from her, this feeling she kept bringing out of me, was not what I needed right now, I had a lot on my plate. The rumors might have died down but I needed the truth to bring me up to my feet. As much as I wanted to live in this moment try and make things right between us.I can't afford to bring her more pain, and I can't afford to be hurt in the process too.But I know one thing for sure, I wasn't going to let anyone hurt her, not Matthew, only I am capable of inflicting pain on her. That's our curse and fate.(Claire's pov)I must have lost my mind, what was I thinking, I obviously can't sleep here tonight. I picked up my phone and dialed Mia's number."A
(Claire's pov)"What!?" I try to understand what nonsense my mom was saying. "you left them with who?" I ask again" they are with Jonathan" she replied"Mom" I yelledwhy is this woman trying to kill me? "I believe it's time they spend some time together after all he is their father even though they're both clueless about who he is" she explained"Mom how could you leave them with Jonathan what if he tries to find out whose kids they are, mom you know I barely talk about who their father was to them you think Jonathan is not smart enough to figure it out" I told her.My mom was quiet at the other end of the line, I rolled My eyes in annoyance, closing shut My laptop I ended the call and called in Benita" yes ma'am, you called" Benita replied as she stepped into my office"Cancel my meeting with JH Appreal," I told herOkay Ma'am" she answered walking out. "Hello ma'am Mia" Benita greeted shutting the door behind her.I raise my head staring at Mia, Who sat down on the couch, her gaz
(Claire's pov)I managed to pull away, releasing myself from his grip, I stood up, staring at him confused, what the hell just happened?I stared at Tiara and Tina who sat there giggling, their eyes sparkled with excitement.Jonathan leaned in trying to touch me but I slapped his hand away."Tina, Tiara, it's time for bed, Let's head upstairs" I called to them"But we wanted cookies" Tiara whine"I will get you cookies tomorrow, first of all, we need to wash off these flours on your sister" I held firm to their hands dragging them upstairs as they kept whinning. It was a hazel but I was able to put them to sleep, I stared at their innocent faces, a smile curled at the end of my lipsA knock on the door interrupted my thoughts, I stood up heading to the door to unlock it."What do you want" I asked, my tone cold as I stared at him"Are Tina and Tiara in bed already?" he asked concern"Yes they are, is that all" I inquired, getting impatient as I stood there staring at him."They must b
(Claire's pov)"Mathew calm down, what are you talking about" I asked at the other end of the line. His voice sounded sad and worried. "Where are you?"Matthew told me where he was and I quickly grabbed my handbag and Keys to head out.I was able to arrive at his house, driving into the driveway, I Parked my car and got out. Heading to the front porchI used the spare keys Matthew always left on the footmat unlocked the door and stepped in."Matthew" I called out worriedMatthew answered from his bedroom as I walked in to meet him. My eyes fixated on him, he sat on the bed his expression disheveled."What's going babe," I asked sitting beside him"Hey, babe. I'm glad you could make it over. I hope you weren't too tired from your long day." he said holding my hands. I have never seen him look this down before"No not at all. What's going on?" I asked curious"Well, I have some bad news. I got called in by the finance investigator at my workplace today. I got into a bit of trouble and n
(Claire's pov)Mia and I walked into the cafeteria, walking toward the counter to place our order. "Like can you believe him, Mia, he was acting as if I was his wife again, asking me where I was coming from and if I had met up with Matthew""Maybe he was genuinely concerned" Mia addedI stared at her in disbelief, what was she saying, "why are you suddenly taking his side" I asked her, my gaze fixated on her"Am not Claire, am just saying, you came back late he was concerned" she added trying to defend herself"But I do come home late, this is not the first time," I told her."Well that was because you lived alone and Jonathan was not there to nag you" she responded, facing the girl behind the counter"What may I get you ladies" she asked us"A cappuccino with full cream" I managed to say "What would you like Mia," I asked her"Just coffee with sugar is fine" she responded, her eyes now fixated on her phone"Is that all" the girl asked as she typed down our orders"Yeah, that's pretty
(Claire Pov)The meeting with DBfashion ended smoothly, Mia stretched as she glanced at her wristwatch."Did we take that long" Mia questioned, I glanced at her."Why say that?" I asked curiously, arranging the files into my handbag."We spent 45 minutes trying to convert that old Fart in there of how strong and wide our advertising firm is." Mia let out."You are seriously going to get us in trouble, we need this job to get moving and be known worldwide, we would also like to try with other big organizations looking for ways to expand their business" I added, beaming her a smileMia walked closer to me, placing a hand on my shoulder, "That's what I love about you, your brain and determination" Mia jokingly teasedI laugh heartedly. She was crazy. "We need to start going, I have to pick up the kids, they are spending the weekend with me, and my mom has a date," I told MiaMia stood there stunned. "Who is banging Mrs. Snow," she asked poking at me."Jesus Christ Mia, you are so unbelie
(Claire’s pov)Mia had requested to go shopping, she said she needed something to clear her mind after refusing Simon round the world tour.“How does he make time out of his busy schedule, I still try to understand what kind of a doctor he is,” I asked Mia confused.I had never questioned Jonathan's friendship with Simon, they had met in college and become so close that others mistake them for brothers. He had always had Jonathan's back, according to Jonathan because I saw Simon as a self-centered prick, who only cared about himself and nothing else.Jonathan never speaks much about Simon's background apart from, He is a doctor, a womanizer, and an asshole, I know nothing else, and seriously I don't want to know more.“He owned the damn hospital apparently,” Mia said and I paused walking.I could hear echoes of footsteps in the tiled floor mall, Mia paused walking towards where I stood, her gaze fixed on me.“You didn’t know that, did you?” she asked and I shook my head. “Well my frie
(Mathew’s Pov)“And what if she does matter, will you do the needful, by getting rid of her” Laura askedI could feel the smell of alcohol and warm breath on my skin, as she spoke, her eyes held mine as if searching for the right answer.“That's up to me to decide Laura” I responded.Laura giggled. “Why are you getting angry over nothing, getting rid of her is our main target, so why are you getting pissed off” she questioned.Trying to get her arms off me, her grip tightened, and my eyes sparkled mischievously as she smiled.“Laura, you must hate me badly,” I asked. Her eyes widened, too stunned to speak, slowly she loosened her grip, moving backward as she staggered, grabbing hold of the table beside her.“Hate? That's a strong word and the wrong way to put it, I don't hate you, I wished it was your body lying in that grave not Ryan” she choked on her words, her eyes teary.Walking closer, I tried to touch her but she brushed my hands off.“I still wonder, if things would have been
(Claira’s Pov)It has been three days since Jonathan confessed his feelings for me. What am I supposed to do with such information, I groan trying to hold myself from screaming.“I heard drinking to stupor is the best medicine to cure the problem” her mother's voice shot from the kitchen.Claire turned to stare at her mother who raised a bottle of Italian wine she had gotten from the twin's birthday.Smiling, I took the filled glass as she handed them to me, “getting drunk is probably the worst idea Mom, but what gives?” She said, taking a full gulp at it.Claire's mother raised an eyebrow at her daughter, pouring her another glass. She was about to take it in one full sip when her mother gave her a dead stare. She chuckled, taking a little sip as she fixed her eyes on the TV screen. It had been raining non stop since yesterday.Sitting here with her mom being cozy and the girls fast asleep, was something she needed indeed.“Let me guess, Boy's problem,” My mom asked, giving me a side
(Claire’s pov)Walking down the sidewalk with Mia on our way to the cafeteria, I confided in her, carefully articulating my thoughts."I saw something that made me suspicious, but then I worried that maybe I overreacted and jumped to conclusions," I admitted, my voice trailing off uncertainty.Mia turned to look at me, her curiosity piqued. "So, do you regret suspecting him?" she inquired.I fell silent, contemplating Mia's question, and stopped walking altogether.“Why should I feel bad for trying to ensure I'm not dating a cheat, or for trying to prevent a potentially harmful situation?” I responded, grappling with my feelings.Mia let out a sigh and placed her hand on my shoulder. “Claire, when it comes to that aspect, I don't think Matthew fits the bill,” she reassured me.Perplexed, I raised an eyebrow at her remark. "What do you mean?" I asked as we reached the cafeteria entrance.Choosing not to elaborate further, Mia entered the cafeteria and went straight to the counter to or
Chapter 35(Claire’s pov)I Love You!?Maybe I heard it wrong. He was drunk, and I am sure he didn't realize what nonsense he was saying.“Stop thinking about it Claire, I am sure he is just trying to get into your head” I murmured.I pressed the doorbell of Matthew's apartment, patiently waiting till he unlocked the door, but there was no answer, so I took my phone from my bag.Dialing His number, but it kept saying switch off, that was unusual, where the hell was he? I questioned, now getting worried. My phone rang, taking me out of my thoughts as I stared at the caller ID before answering.“Hey Mia” I greeted with a subtle smile on my lips.“Where the hell are you, the signing deal is today, why aren't you here” Mia questioned at the other end of the line.I said nothing, stepping into the elevator, I stared at the moving number on it, as Mia continued to speak.“This is the Big deal, you have no excuse for missing it for real, Are you with Jonathan or Matthew” she asked again, I c
Claire’s pov“I can't believe you brought her here to my children's birthday party Matthew” I spoke, watching him.“She is our new business partner and aren't you two getting along” he questioned.Does he not know or see how much I wanted nothing to do with her, she was a snake to be weary of.I sighed, “We aren't that close Mathew, of all people should know I don't make friends that easily, I just find her strange,” I told himMathew turned and stared at Laura, who sat in the garden watching the kids. She has been quiet ever since she spoke to Jonathan. I wonder what he might have told her.I excused myself from Mathew and walked towards where she sat, taking a seat next to her.“Aren't they adorable,” she asked, her gaze not leaving them.“They are” I manage to say.“Ryan would have been 7 by now, running and playing too, calling me mommy” she added, I could see the tears gathered in her eyes.Something inside of me shifted, she sobbed, what happened, what did Jonathan say to her, I
(Jonathan’s POV)Call it a nightmare but this must be my worst, I grabbed Laura by the arm, pulling her outside.Pacing back and forth the front porch, I furrowed my brows trying to understand what was going on.Why was she here? What does she want? What was she and Matthew up to? What has she told Claire? “First of all, are you fucking crazy, haven't you done enough damage,” I said trying to calm the anger in my voice.Laura smiled at me, walking closer she hugged me, leaving me too stunned to utter a word. My eyes caught Claire as she stared at us from the window before turning to walk away. In one quick swift, I pushed Laura so hard.“Ouch, easy champion, what if I slipped and fell” Laura said, annoyed at my action.“Why are you here, oh Laura if you dare harm Claire, I swear..” she cut me short before I could finish.“Why would I do that, I only came to see you,” she said. “I came to apologize about what happened, for the damages that I caused” I watched her too st

Why was she in Chicago of all places?“Well I wouldn't mind, since I am new here it won't hurt to make new friends” she responded giving me a forceful smile.“I never knew you had kids, you keep surprising me all the time” I smiled back, rubb
Chapter 31 (The confrontation) (Jonathan’s POV) Being in Vegas for three days has made me miss Canada and the girls. I have been calling and they are still refusing to talk to me.I need to settle everything I came here to do as quickly as possible.I stood at the police station, my eyes moving from my phone to the people being brought in by the cops.“I hope I didn't keep you waiting,” A familiar voice said, I turned, face to face with Calvin A friendly smile appeared on my lips as I faced him. “No, please you must be busy, I should be grateful” Calvin asked me to follow him as he led me to a private section of the cell room. I stared at Jessy, who looked like hell.“What happened here?” I questioned, concerned.“Drugs, she has been dealing for a long time, she got caught up in one of the newest junkies in town,” He said This will be bad if it gets to the press, they might think STAR ENT.
