Ebony got back to sleep and awoke to her alarm, which was a rare occurrence. That meant she needed to get up and get herself going. She was running late. Then she remembered she wasn’t in the tower alone. There were three others about. Dang it. Three men who were probably still asleep, too.
When she peaked into their room that the three were sleeping in, she found only Benedict asleep. It was now nine in the morning, late for her starting the day.
He must have been asleep for only two or three hours. He needed more than that. So she left him sleeping and, once she was dressed for the day, Ebony went to the tower.
Once she opened the trap door quietly as she dreaded interrupting another intimate moment. The smell of breakfast cooking hit her like a physical barrier.
“Morning. I was just coming to get you for breakfast. You’ve got perfect timing.” Franco smiled down at her. Peter was at the table setting out breakfast. It seemed all so normal. Peter was smiling also, and Ebony couldn’t help but smile back at the men.
Once they were all sitting at the table and were eating, Franco asked. “Who’s searching for the poachers and who’s watching the tower?”
“Peter’s here minding the food and such. Benedict’s sleeping. I’m stuck with paperwork and reporting all this. That leaves you to mind the tower. I think we won’t get to searching for them until after lunch. I’ll have to take Benedict with me. You can take a break and Peter can take over watching the tower. I’ll take the shift after dinner. Now don’t forget there’s a supply drop coming in after lunch. I expect both of you to pick it up and bring it here. It’s a lot if the new manifest is correct. Food, more first aid, your belongings, and some new equipment. But why they didn’t have the three of you bring it in? I don’t know. Air dropping electronics is a risky bet.” For that matter, she still couldn’t figure out why Alan hadn’t said anything about the new hires or sent her in with some supplies. It would have been more cost effective.
“We’ll keep that in mind when we’re bringing it here and unpacking it. If we have time, we’ll test the items to ensure they’re working before you send the reports.” Franco assured her. “How about we clear the brush between here and there when you’re minding the tower? I think I saw some superb firewood. Get a jump on the winter supply.”
“Sounds good. I’m not sure exactly how much we’ll need now that we have the cabin opened, too. I’d assume more than double of what I’ve been using. But I’ll check the records for that today.”
They went about their jobs in relative quiet. Peter turned on the communications radio and they listened in case any reports came through, as usual. There were none.
Ebony realized it was lunchtime because Benedict made his appearance, and the smells of Peter’s cooking permeated her thoughts, making her stomach growl.
Lunch was simple as there wasn’t as much selection and the stock was for one and not four people.
“Benedict, we’re heading out to see if we can find more information about these poachers. Franco and Peter are staying here to accept the supply drop and man the tower. I want to see if your findings are in a different location and if they can shed more information.”
“Fine. Not a problem. I can easily find the location again. But it will take the better part of the afternoon to get there on two feet. But I’d feel better if we did that because we should carry weapons, just in case, we encounter them.”
“Agreed. I think we all should have a weapon on us at all times. The last thing we need is the poachers getting a jump on us.”
They finished eating and went about preparing for their work. Ebony feared that the poachers might discover where their airdrops landed and attempt to steal their supplies. So they would arm everyone for their safety.
Benedict and Ebony soon left the station to investigate further. Every few years, some illegal outfit thought it smart to send poachers after furs and other valuable things hidden on the land that they could easily haul out. It was disgusting, as they didn’t think of sustainability or future cultivation. The last group was actually stealing birch bark. They’d killed a lot of trees, taking the bark off the trees. It would take decades for the tree population to recover in the area.
“Look, I’m sorry if I embarrassed you at dinner. But I’m worried you will run into something that’s out of you league. I’m sure you know how dangerous some of these cowards are.” Benedict was trying to see reason with Ebony, but she wasn’t sure what he was trying to prove.
“Oh, I think you knew exactly what you were saying, and it wasn’t concerned for my safety. You need to control. Here’s the thing: I’m not part of your bonded pack. My safety isn’t your concern and I’m the senior forest ranger here. I’d kindly appreciate it if you didn’t sabotage my authority.” Ebony was at a point where she was getting sick of him pushing his luck. Trying his boundaries or whatever it was he was doing. This stepping over the line and then apologizing for it was too much like gas lighting for her liking.
Benedict suddenly turned around. His face looked stormy with an anger that surprised her.
“You may not be a member of my bonded pack right now. You may have seniority right now. But you will never tell me how I feel. Let me give you a little demonstration on how uninterested I am in your well-being.” Next thing Ebony knew she could feel the hard bark of a tree against her back, Benedict plastered against her front and his face coming down in a possessive kiss. She was pinned there, and he held her head still as he made bloody well sure she knew he was interested in a lot more than her safety.
“You got up last night. What happened?” Franco said to Peter after Ebony and Benedict left the tower. He didn’t know what the others knew or didn’t know. There were enough issues already without adding to it.
“I went to talk to Ebony.” Peter came back to the table with a couple of mugs of coffee and sat down after handing one to Franco.
“How did it go?” Franco wasn’t sure what happened last night, and it’s been a wait until he felt the coast was clear to ask him about it.
“She didn’t want to talk, and she was all stressed.” Peter shrugged as he looked into his coffee mug.
“Let me guess, you worked your magic on her?” Franco knew Peter too well and how he hated seeing anyone stressed or anxious.
“I didn’t screw her. But I got my hands on her and gave her a massage. By the way, her tits are real, and she’s got a fire burning for attention. Ebony needs a bond desperately. A little TLC would go a long way.” Peter gave his best advice when he spoke about what he saw in other people. He could spot a need in a person when even they didn’t know they struggled with.
“So, what? A little one-on-one time with each of us?” Franco expected Peter to tell him he’d misunderstood and correct him. It surprised him when that’s exactly what Peter was trying to say.
“Yeah, find a way to connect with her. Can you think of how she must have felt after being a lone out here by herself for the better part of five years? We’re supposed to be in a team and teams should only be out here for a season before there’s relief sent in.” Franco hadn’t thought about it, but it made sense when Peter mentioned it.
“Yeah, I guess. She sees us as invaders, and she feels like an outsider.” Peter tried his best to explain what he meant because he hated arguing and miscommunication. Franco just waited for Peter to lose his shit on the others while they were fighting. He hadn’t though, not yet.
“Then we’ll have to step this up and show her we are open to more with her.” Franco was trying to figure out ways to interact with her one-on-one. It would be something to think about as he did his job. If only they had some bad weather or something that kept them indoors. Or their generator didn’t work. They could make the best of things. Nah, if it became known the generator was tampered with, they’d look at them first and they needed it for the radio if the poachers became a real problem. This would take some finessing.
“I hate this pussyfooting around. I’d prefer to just introduce her to the idea that we want to include her in everything.” Peter wasn’t as far from blowing as Franco’s first thought. He was getting impatient now. Which could be worse since he could go off and do something stupid. Franco needed to rein him in.
“A little immersion theory pack style?” Gods, take the hint about what you sound like, Peter, please.
“We might not mate with her right away. But a cozy night with all of us there. Dinner, a fire, cuddling. Maybe if she’s comfortable, we can show her how good it could feel to be with us. A few nights like that and she’d know how each of us like it and want her. Hopefully she’ll trust us and be more accepting of more.” Peter was desperate, just like Franco, for their bonded pack to be complete with a mate for them. They needed to settle down. It was a sticking point that they all needed to address.
“You romantic sot, had me worried there for a moment. Did you talk to Benedict about this yet?” Franco was hoping it wouldn’t be an issue with Benedict. He was the most outgoing of them and their obvious leader. But he needed them to mellow out his brash nature sometimes.
“Not yet. He’s acting strange, don’t you think? Snapping at Ebony like that.” Peter was concerned about that, and Franco couldn’t blame him. If they didn’t get him to simmer down, this could blow up in their faces.
“I don’t think he expected her to be so dominant and independent. We need to get him to back down and try to get to know Ebony as a person. That would help him a lot more than butting heads with her all the time.” Franco knew they’d have to get him to relax and accept he would have a mate who would debate and question his authority from time to time.
“More coffee before we start. Watch for the supply drop?” Peter asked, shaking himself back to reality and the job at hand.
“Yeah, you know I never say no to your coffee.” Franco finished the last of his coffee and gave his mug to Peter. “You know we could give her the day off? We could use the poachers as an excuse for her to stay close. Then keep her busy in good ways.”
“Now the question is, how do we define good ways?”
“Or we could each go out on the job and make our interest in her known to her individually. You’re the romantic of this pack. You tell me what’s a good way to tell her we’re interested in her?”
“Oh, I started already, and she’s quite receptive. I think I could have had her if I pressed a little more, but I want her to trust me more before I go down on her.”
“Wow. So you’ve thought this all out. Exactly what you’re going to do and how.”
“Hm… There’s room for adjustment to her feelings. But I will not lie to her or lead her on. Just get her used to me being close.” Peter handed Franco his coffee, leaned over the small table, and gave him an affectionate kiss. “You need to get to work. Stop driving yourself crazy. You’ve got enough people doing that for you.”
“Tease. I should screw you before work.”
“Go, I have dishes to do.”
Ebony got back to sleep and awoke to her alarm, which was a rare occurrence. That meant she needed to get up and get herself going. She was running late. Then she remembered she wasn’t in the tower alone. There were three others about. Dang it. Three men who were probably still asleep, too. Franco watched Benedict and Ebony return to the station. He knew as soon as he saw Benedict’s face what happened in the bush while were out. “Well, well, looks like Benedict didn’t wait for us to dip his wick and have a taste of our girl.” Peter turned from what he was doing to look at Franco. “What? You’re kidding.” “He’s got that just got laid look on his face.” “Let me see.” Peter took the binoculars from Franco and trained them of the two as they approached. “Well, he better not complain when we have some dessert tonight.” “Ooo... That sounds good. We can lay her out on the table, and he can watch us send her over the edge.” “It’s not a competition. She might be sore. You know how wild Benedict can be.” Peter wanted to know their mate in every way, but he wanted to take their time. He knew they were a lot to handle, and they could easily overwhelm a woman. “Maybe being gentle and slow with her, then? That has its own appeal,
Ebony desperately wanted to talk to her sisters. What was she going to do with three mates out here with humans around? Maybe she needed to talk to her mother? Could she even get a signal to call even one of them out here? So there she was with her satellite phone, looking for a signal by her bedroom window. There, she had one. Thank all that’s holy. She dialled her sister Sapphire. Not only was she also a wolf, she’d not exactly lived a traditional lifestyle. That was a story and a half, and Ebony was sure that it wasn’t over, yet, she was sure of that. With curses and other various magic things going on, it was a wonder the woman would talk to any of them. But now, with the binding spell off her and Ivory, they were exploring their special abilities. Gods, what was she going to tell the guys about her own abilities? She couldn’t use her abilities with them around without freaking them out. She’d lost several friends over the years doing her Doctor Dolittle
Peter sat there with his plate of food relatively untouched. He’d expected her to come up here and instantly want to know what he and Franco would like to do with her. Instead, she launched into her family, coming to see her about something weird in the woods, and they should disregard anything unusual about her family. “May I ask what you mean about unusual?” Franco asked, between shovelling large chunks of food into his mouth. He didn’t notice until an empty spoon reached his mouth that he’d finished. At least, someone was enjoying the food he’d made. “Well… Promise not to hate me? I’m a hybrid, actually. One of three born during a Strawberry Moon. I’m the oldest and born just minutes before the moon hit its zenith. Sapphire is the next, born during the zenith, and then there’s Ivory born minutes after the zenith. By the blank looks on your faces, you don’t know what that means. Okay, it’s a weird thing that happens… Well, once in a blue moon. Or a strawbe
Ebony left and the three men instantly regretted their reactions to her news. “Do we believe this? How would she show us proof she can do that?” “We either take her at face value and accept it. Or we don’t pursue this match? I say we believe her and with her family here. We can discuss it with them. See how they handle it?” “I say we all have our issues, and we’ll have to add them to the pot sooner or later for her to decide whether she’ll take on our issues. So, if she accepts us as we are. Wouldn’t we be hypocrites to face hers? I mean, crazy or not, she’s dealing with something.” “I think I’m going to find her.” Peter was sullen during most of the meal and most of the conversation. “Wish me luck.” He left and followed Ebony’s scent easily to find her by the small river sitting on a rock. She looked so alone. Even when a bit landed on her knee. She barely paid attention as it hopped and twittered at her. He watched silently as she sighed an
Two men in one day. Would she survive this? Or would they wear her out? Now she waited on pins and needles for Franco, to what should call it. Perform for her? Benedict liked it rough, Peter was his opposite, so what did Franco like? Ebony would be the first to admit she was curious. It wasn’t until she went to go to bed Ebony found out about Franco. He insisted on her sleeping with all three of them. They’d lined a room with mattresses and slept tangled together. Franco cuddled. He was the catalyst for their close bond. He needed to be touched, and he needed to touch. So here she was in the centre of these three males. Trying to sleep. Franco’s head lay against her hip, his nose close to the apex of her bare thighs. Ebony was having difficulty falling asleep with the scent of her new mates so close. Franco must have noticed, because he woke up and began burying his nose between her thighs. She couldn’t believe this. She’d never needed sex so badly. Fear
Ebony awoke with the guys asleep around her. Peter used her breast as a pillow and Franco was on her other side, using her hip the same way. She could feel his breath on her inner thigh. Benedict’s chest was her pillow. She couldn’t make sense of the tangle of arms and legs until everyone got up. Getting ready for the day, having breakfast, and planning the day. “If only there wasn’t trouble out there, I’d be half tempted to take the day off and be with my mates. Bond you to us right now.” Benedict stated as he kissed her good morning. Once everyone was greeted similarly, Ebony felt a change in the atmosphere between everyone. The live wire caused by the anticipation was gone. The men could relax and be themselves finally. No more pussyfooting around. They could touch and express themselves without fear of her rejection, and she felt a little bad about that. If she’d only known, it would be like this earlier. She’d have welcomed them fully that first night. Franco
Franco insisted it was his turn to help Ebony out with the communications work and other administrative duties. While they kept an eye out from the tower, the other two set out to see if they could find out more about these poachers and where they’d been. Ebony figured they could start looking there for evidence of a wight having been disturbed when her family arrived. Ebony hated the idea of them looking for anything like the wight without her. Partially because Benedict didn’t believe that such a creature still existed in the modern world or even existed in the past.“Ebony, hon. You need to relax. Peter and Benedict will be fine out there. They know what they are doing, and they’ll be careful. Honestly, it’s daylight and the chances of them finding anything are slim. You need to focus on how we’re going to keep the other rangers from this area if possible.” Franco was standing behind Ebony, his hands on her shoulders, trying to work out the knots that were formi
“When when last spoke and I told you I hadn’t received injuries I wasn’t lying. We had a freak accident nothing that we could have predicted or accounted for. They misplaced truck and the ground was too wet under it. When a second vehicle moved out while they were moving a skid of equipment into place. The earth under the rear wheels shifted off the back of the truck in seconds and I was beneath it. The skid was no longer full but heavy enough to break my femur and three ribs.We had a healer there, so they patched me up. The planes needed several repairs that would take days. I didn’t want them to take time away from the repairs to take me to a healing center then it would take longer to get home. Before you say anything, I didn’t believe I was that severely injured.” Benedict hadn’t believed he’d been that injured until after the Druid had stabilized his breaks and the pain had settled in when his adrenaline had faded. He’d been embarrassed by his response to that, but it was to la
Benedict didn’t tell Ebony that he stayed away an extra two days because he had gone to the front lines to review the damage to their equipment and vehicles. Fate got him and he ran right into a freak accident and a human skid slid off the back of a flatbed truck. There was no question about it the accident being an accident. Wolves and humans were working together to pack the truck at the time. But the mud under the truck shifted when another vehicle started and moved out. He’d left with a broken leg and three ribs. At least they’d had a druid healer here who could start his healing process. But he wouldn’t be able to shift for a week. Benedict would walk home though a little slowly.Benedict knew he’d lied to Ebony, but he didn’t want to explain it on the phone. Not when she was so close to giving birth. His people had to make several repairs on their vehicles there in the field to get it home anyway. It took a day longer and it didn’t hurt Benedict’s recovery. Even though h
Ebony waited at the Pack house. It had been three days since Benedict and their team had left for the fire. The pilots had come in for fuel and repairs. Several vehicles had come in baring injured people on the way to get care. They’d been found trapped within the fire or were injured during fighting the fire. But so far, their wolves, mages, druids, bears, and such had stayed safe and were still working toward stopping the fire. However, Ebony had heard complaints that magic was a disappointment by the human fighting contingents and not nearly as powerful or magical as they had believed it should have been. Which received sighs, warnings, and reminders of their that there were limits like anything within reality. Ebony used the time, or she tried to, to finish the pups’ suite. It wouldn’t be used fully right away. They would have the pups in their room first before they would use their suite. She wondered who these pups would look like. Ebony h
Benedict was teasing Ebony with names over dinner when the call came through. The first real call. They’d been watching a storm for the last three days. It’s winds were pushing thirty-five miles an hour and lightning was flashing randomly throughout the mountains. The problems they were having was the area the storm was in had been a dry zone for the last eight months. They were waiting for the lightning to start multiple fires, flash floods, landslides, and car accidents. Humans would need help it’s how these things worked. Extreme weather was becoming worse not better. Humans could handle a lot but it was adding up.“Go on, this is what we made this place for. Show them why we’re here and what we can offer.” Ebony all but pushed Benedict out the door. “I have enough people here to help me. I’ll be fine here missing you. Now go.”“Right. Don’t do anything crazy while I’m gone okay?” Benedict begged. He wasn’t sure what she would do. But she was pushing him out the door when he w
Ebony couldn’t get comfortable. Her stomach was so large now. She struggled to get out of the bed and chairs. Ebony avoided standing for too long. It had been months since she’d shifted into fur, and she missed hunting. She missed running and there wasn’t any way she was going to run like this. But her balance was off like her pups decided they wanted to sit only on one side of her body. That’s the only way she could describe it in her grumpy upset mood.Benedict was distracted by Ebony’s distressed attitude. She still had two months until she gave birth. He tried to ensure she had everything she could want and if she wanted to move then she had someone with her to help her. Preferably it would be him. He hated anyone touching her but him now. They spent more time together. “I have a few gifts here from the families and the Pack wants to set up the pups’ nursery. Are you ready for that or is it too early for you?”“oh no I’m great. Go ahead and have them bring me in the gifts
Ebony had her staff enter and between her staff as Marian’s staff they worked with the school’s staff. They had to brute force at times to get the documentation completed and wait times waived. To gain the testing schedules at a specific date and location. But between Marian and Ebony’s joint effort they were able to overcome the bureaucratic mess presented to them. Marian used the media and the public eye to keep the gears moving. While Ebony had the eye of the supernatural government on her through Benedict’s father and her father. So, there was no room to falter and no time.Even so it took months to achieve this and get this far. Now they were able to step back into their everyday life. Ebony’s baby bump was beginning to show now. Benedict was managing the building of the healing center and hiring of healers as many would also work as teachers, rescuers, emergency workers, and such.Benedict knew he had to have a certain amount of medical foundation up and running fast sin
Benedict moved through the Pack house searching for Ebony. He’d received word that Marian had arrived at the gates and was headed there right now. This was the first time she’d visited their territory and Ebony along with many others were abuzz with trying to make everything perfect for her visit. “Ebony, Marian is here. She wants to talk to you about the results of her PTA meeting.” Benedict leaned into her study and saw the stress on her face. “What’s going on? Do you think it went that badly?”“Badly? I don’t know. I mean come on. It can’t get any worse than they say no, and we carry on with our previous plans. No, they might want to limit where out pups can and can’t go after this. They might fear our pups can’t control their aggressive nature and might cause problems.” “I don’t know about that wouldn’t she have said something on the phone if it had been a no.” Benedict asked in an effort to point out the effort Marian was taking to come to their home.“I don’t know Ben
“Marian, I know in a perfect world we could plan this between the two of us and we’d have pups and children learning together without a problem.” Ebony went to a meeting luncheon with Marian to speak about Marian’s idea of the pups going to school in the town with the town’s human children.“Right. It would never happen that way, would it? Alright, so how will we do this?” Marian said a little chagrinned. Ebony shook her head and shrugged. She cocked her head to the side as she got a sudden thought.“We’ll start with talking to the children’s parents. We don’t have to talk to them. A questionnaire or a phone call. A town hall meeting or a PTA meeting. You can choose what would make the community feel more comfortable. I would hate to hear someone a year from now say that they felt they were left out of the decision and didn’t feel like a member of the community.” Ebony gave a vague idea. A blush crossed her cheeks when she realized how random and unworkable it was. But Marian did
“Benedict they could have attacked and killed you. What were you thinking going in there alone with a human as back up. What if that human had been in cahoots with the other humans?” Ebony demanded as she heard the story of what happened in the cave.“Ebony they were cowards. Why do you think they were attacking their own people? They’re afraid of us. They need money here. So, what do they do? Make us the monsters and then attract people here to hunt us. Make a tourist business out of it while the laws are still vague. When people were caught for murder, they didn’t want to be the ones guilty of the killing. They thought it was perfect.”“But they could have ganged up on you.”“They didn’t and it’s over. No one is hurt or injured. It’s dealt with. The humans are embarrassed, and the town now understands how we can help them now and in the future.” Benedict said to her. He was reassuring her a little more forcefully now. “We had to get past the humans who couldn’t get past their
