A bear. A bear… There was a wild animal in front of her.
Then again, wasn’t she getting married to one?She had initially found it strange when she hadn’t noticed any bears during her tour on the surface. There had been birds, dogs, horses, and snakes, but no bears. She had concluded without even bothering to ask that maybe those creatures might have been in the woods until Eustace told her she would find quite many of them both in the woods and underground, along with a mount waiting for her down here. The creature silently regarded Mel and turned around on all four paws, turning its back to her.“My lady.” The escort lowered the veiled umbrella and smiled apologetically at Mel. “We will pass a few more sections before getting to the centre of the settlement where the ceremony will take place. The journey is a little lengthy…”Mel’s gaze shifted back to the bear’s behind. It would be silly for her to ask if the bear was hostile or if it would eat her. They wouldn’t just present her like food on a platter for their animals.“We will help you up.”Mel took a steady breath and nodded, dragging her feet to stand beside the bear, mere inches away from its shimmering fur.“Where is the saddle?” she asked. Her question stopped the escorts and Mel immediately felt embarrassed. Then again, she had seen saddles on their horses, so why not the bears?“It’s alright, my lady,” another escort said in a comforting manner, understanding plastered across her features. “We don’t use saddles on our bears. On one hand, Iva is gentle and is one of our lord’s finest companions. Please forgive me for being forward…” She gently took Mel’s hand and pressed her palm against the thick fur.Mel flinched as her hand came in contact with warmth. The startled woman cautiously sifted her fingers through the smooth fur before letting her palm sink deeper, coming in contact with its flesh. A purr-like sound rumbled from the animal's throat, echoing across the quiet expanse of the wide cave and Mel stilled in fascination as the bear’s skin seemed to ripple and flex under her touch. Did it like her petting it?She took her hand back and looked back at the envoys. “I’m sorry. It seems like I’m here wasting time…” She cast another apprehensive glance at the monstrosity and turned back to the envoys. “Help me up.”The escorts did so, and in a manner of seconds, Mel was carried, lifted, and guided to the bear’s back—though clumsily. Her gown didn’t give her as much free movement as expected, but she was able to find a sitting position with her legs hanging down the side of Iva’s back. She clutched patches of the creature’s fur, worried that with each movement, she might slide off its back, but her anxiety eased over time, and her focus was shifted to the dazzling crystals that changed colours from time to time as they went deeper into the tunnel, uphill, downhill, and into other tunnels that branched from one other.“Has anyone ever gotten lost here?” Mel asked in a whisper, dizzy from the shifting directions.“No, my lady. Never. Though, to ease your worries, every household has its tunnels leading above ground. But if you want to explore the undercity, our lord can arrange a guide for you.”Mel had a few more questions, but the journey seemed to draw to a close as she heard nearby chattering. Her stomach squirmed as they drew closer and her heart nearly stopped in her chest as they strutted into the dome-like expanse of a large cave. The rocky walls and floor were smooth, and faint wine crystals jutted from the ceiling, light emitting from every facet of the stones. What grabbed her attention, however, were the wide steps leading up to the large stone doors on the other side of the cave. A large paw print of a bear was engraved on the two stone slabs. Iva stopped right at the base of the steps and the escorts helped her down the mount, straightening the folds and layers of her gown.Behind those doors was one of Grime’s sacred spaces and the hall where her wedding would take place. She glanced at the floor, a little downcast. No matter what support Eustace or Lori had given her, she was here, with no one by her side. Never before had she felt so lonely. If circumstances could allow, her mother would have been here, arm in arm with her daughter as she was being handed over to her new family…“My lady?”Mel straightened, turning her attention back to the escorts. “Sorry about that…” She faced the doors and stepped forward. The escorts assisted her in climbing the few steps and they paused briefly at the door. Amidst the low chatter, Mel picked the melodic sounds of low music, similar to the stringed instruments that were being played in the first section.Mel took a deep breath and found the escorts staring at her, waiting patiently for her next instruction. A barely visible smile touched Mel’s lips and she nodded. Two escorts moved forward, one on each side of the slab, and gave the stone doors a soft push.Mel expected to hear the stone grating against the rocky floor, but the doors were silent and opened with ease. The light from the stones in the cave brightened as the doors were swung open, pouring a dazzling wine hue into the partitioned chamber.Mel’s small shadow splayed across the rocky-grained floor and stretched towards the grey curtain before her. The chattering ceased and the music eased into lower notes. Mel’s heart clamoured within her chest. Behind those wide drapes was a large gathering. Her eyes swept over the spacious rectangular enclosure and came to rest upon a small raised stone platform with two wooden bowls on it. She took hesitant steps into the chamber and her heart soared to her throat as the escorts closed the doors behind her, leaving her alone in the sudden darkness. The low music remained, and she nearly jumped out of her skin when a large hand engulfed hers, along with the tips of her sleeves.“It’s fine.”Mel nearly jumped out of her skin at the low voice in her ear. She felt his rough palm and it then occurred to her that her hand was shaking. She looked up to find the faint blue glow of Bjorn’s eyes staring down at her. Her pulsing heart quickened. They were holding hands. The moment was short-lived as someone cleared their throat, startling her.A dim grey glow engulfed the sacred space and Mel’s attention was drawn to the shriveled old man in the corner. He appeared to be even smaller than Mel. His slight frame was steadied by a wooden walking cane and his lips quivered as he smiled fondly at her.“Your shoes, my dear,” his hoarse voice called out to her.Mel immediately looked down and noticed she was a few inches away from a dark grey line. She directed an apologetic smile the man’s way and leaned forward to undo her shoes when she stilled mid-movement. Bjorn was already hunched forward, his hands nimbly undoing the buckles of her sandal.“Your leg,” Bjorn mumbled.Mel raised her feet and a warm shiver crawled up the back of her leg when Bjorn touched her ankle, slipping the shoe off her foot. She focused on his white hair, hoping he wouldn’t look up. It would have been helpful if the gown had a high neck to cover the redness of her neck and cheeks. That was how hot they felt.A few moments later, her shoes were off her feet and they both walked forward, barefoot. Her excitement ebbed when Bjorn didn’t hold her hand after, and she had followed his lead, coming to stand beside him in front of the raised stone platform. The old man shuffled up to them, stopping beside the stone platform. He announced, his voice slightly louder and clearer than before, “Now, let us begin the ceremony.”The music stopped and from the edge of the curtain, a young Grime girl slipped in. She was the same height as Mel, but with a little more “meat to her bones” as her father would describe. She felt a slight pinprick in her heart and Mel clutched at the side of her gown.‘Just bear with it. I can see them another time,’ she comforted herself, thinking of her family. The girl held a wooden jug tentatively and approached the old man. He nodded at her and she moved right to the front of the platform, facing Mel and Bjorn. She bowed slightly at the both of them and tilted the jug at one of the bowls. Mel’s eyes went wide at the glowing blue liquid that streamed out of the jug, pouring into the bowl as a shimmering pool. The liquid emitted a light smell, a fragrance she couldn’t identify. One moment she was smelling honey, the next, she was smelling chocolate. After that, a fragrant mixture of citrus and cinnamon assaulted her senses, rendering her confused as even more scents spread throughout the chamber. While she couldn’t identify most of them, they all smelled pleasant and before she knew it, both bowls were filled.“Please, drink,” the old man instructed.Bjorn took one of the bowls and Mel hesitantly did so. The interchanging fragrances grew stronger when she brought the bowl close to her face and she inspected the liquid. It was thick, and its syrupy body consisted of a faint blue base with thin swirls of darker blue. She squeezed her eyes shut and brought the bowl to her lips, downing the liquid. The iciness of the drink surprised Mel, but it was a pleasant surprise, one so good that she finished everything in the bowl down to the last drop. The sweet taste lingered at the back of her tongue as she lowered the bowl, freezing to take in the wide-eyed gazes of Bjorn and the young girl. The old man’s mouth hung open. She stared back at them, her pulse beginning to race. Had she done something wrong? Eustace had told Mel the overseer would instruct her as to what to do during the ceremony and she and Bjorn had been told to drink, and drink she did.Bjorn’s sigh broke the stagnant silence and he downed the rest of his drink. Mel’s lips broke out into a sheepish smile and she returned the bowl to the platform. His fingers graced her chin and he pulled, guiding it to face him. The light touch made her flinch. She could feel the blood pumping through her veins as his lips touched hers gently, A prickly wave of pleasure washed down her neck as the slight touch shifted to a gentle pres
Mel plopped on the edge of the bed and she flinched as the mattress sank beneath her. She nearly fell onto her back so she pressed a hand down to steady herself and found the bed to be very soft, far softer than what she had at home. While it was cushiony, there was a certain firmness it had to it. She snatched her hand from the surface and sprang to her feet, stepping away from the fearful object. The bed was large enough to accommodate the two of them on it.A worrying crease disrupted the fine line of her brows and her pulse quickened. How would they even do it?Annie walked out of the closet, Mel’s neatly folded undergarments clasped to her stomach in one hand, and the other hand closing the sliding door behind her. She paused when she noticed Mel staring at the bed with a troubled look on her face. The middle-aged woman stilled, realisation dawning on her. It would only take a fool to not understand what was running through her lady’s mind at that very moment. And for a good eno
“My lady, how was your nigh…” Annie faltered, walking in to meet a sulking Mel.“Horrible!” Mel snapped, flinging her arms up and dropping them with a slap at her thighs. “Just horrible.”Annie paled, dreading the worst. She looked around the room, from the rumpled bed to her lady’s unruly appearance. What had gone wrong?“Mel—”“Where is he?” Mel marched towards Annie. “I want to speak with him.”Annie stood, dumbfounded. She didn’t know what to make of this as she noticed the hurt expression on Mel’s face shift to fury.“He didn’t do anything! He didn’t touch me. He wasn’t even here!” Mel grabbed her head.Annie’s eyes widened like saucers, understanding dawning on her. “But—but as I… A while after I left, I…” Annie lowered her eyes. “I am ashamed of myself. The helpers had gone and after roaming the chambers and halls I could walk through, I went to my room and then came back to hear or see how you were doing. I was worried and I wanted to be sure you were alright…” Annie rambled,
Lori walked into the room, leaving the door open behind her.“Ah…” Mel sighed in relief, her hand on her chest as she tried to calm her rapid-beating heart. “You scared me.”Lori chuckled, her arms crossed across her chest. “There is nothing to be afraid of. It’s alright.”Mel smiled, unsure why she had been scared in the first place. This chamber was unlocked so there was nothing wrong with going through the rooms in her own house. But a part of her had been worried Bjorn had been the one walking in. It then occurred to her that she wasn’t sure if she wanted to confront him about the night before.Lori inspected the portraits and Mel broke the silence. “How did you know I was here?”Mel considered the underground manor was big, and she was very certain she had walked around for quite a long time even if it had sometimes been in circles. There were also occasions where she had gotten lost before she wound up here. But for Lori to pinpoint where she was…“Oh! It’s nothing much,” Lori a
Mel stepped aside as Bjorn closed the door to the study shut behind her. He paused, his back facing her as he straightened to his full height and sighed. She glanced around the spacious room, toying with her fingers, and was half surprised to find that the head of the Grime clan seemed intellectual enough. Except for her brother, not even her father had this many books in his own private office. “I do not appreciate you sharing intimate details of our relationship with other people,” he said as he turned to face her, breaking the silence in the room.Mel winced, immediately tearing her eyes from Bjorn’s pointed gaze. He had heard them.“But she’s my friend,” Mel let out in a disgruntled whisper. Bjorn’s eyes narrowed. “She’s not your friend.” He shook his head and walked to his work desk. “She can’t be your friend.”“Excuse me?” Mel looked up at him, a disturbed frown working its way to her face. “How can you even say that?”Bjorn’s jaw twitched and he sat on the edge of the table,
Mel begrudgingly followed an excited Lori back towards the manor above ground, her thoughts in shambles. What might have been minutes or hours ago, the manor, along with the whole settlement had been quiet and peaceful. But now, it was the complete opposite and Mel was frankly quite alarmed as to what was happening, and she dreaded asking Lori why.Since Lori seemed a little happy, it didn’t seem like they were under attack. But on the other hand, if they were preparing for a festivity or something, Mel felt like she was going to lose her mind. Would she be executed if she ended up burning the clan down?‘No. What am I thinking? Everything should be fine. I have Annie by my side,’ Mel thought, trying her best to relax.A lot of people stopped what they were doing to greet Mel in a swift curtsey as she passed and this made her feel conscious. She strapped the vase to her chest.“Lori. Tell me what is happening,” Mel asked, unable to take the suspense anymore. They were all excited for
“That should be all,” Mel huffed with a triumphant smile and wrapped her hands around herself, giving the small bag with her clothes a second glance.“I hope this isn’t too much?” Annie meekly asked, her hand poised at the bag opening, ready to add or remove any more clothing. She faced Mel but subtly glanced at Bjorn, awaiting his approval too. The maid wished the two could agree on things.Bjorn turned away from his open wardrobe and his eyes narrowed at what Annie had packed. He sighed and rubbed at his temple, trying as much as possible to ease his features. His frown lessened and he turned to Mel. “That’s too much,” he said.Mel frowned. “How is it too much? We’ll be gone for over a week or two, won’t we?”“We’re going into the woods, not to a neighbouring city. You won’t need all those clothes.”“What if it gets dirty? I’ll need a change of clothing to wear and—”“They can be washed and worn repeatedly,” Bjorn countered, a little peeved at having to explain such an obvious reas
Bjorn stood still, stunned. He couldn't believe what he had just heard. "What?" She didn't know how to wear basic clothing? Regardless of their cultural differences, he was sure they had something akin to pants and trousers, though not as loose as what was worn here in Grime. Then again, had she really asked him to dress her up?As if reading the confusing thoughts on his face, Mel spoke up, "We were not to wear men's clothing back at home, so I'm unfamiliar with how this works." Her voice grew quieter as she talked and then she looked away and frowned. Why was she even telling him this? And to ask him to dress her… he must think she was asking him to perform servant duties. 'I keep acting out one thing and then deciding another thing. Embarrassing!'Understanding crept onto Bjorn's features and he sighed, rubbing his face with a palm. "You can forget about such nonsensical rule. That isn't just for men, you can wear it too. It's more convenient than wearing a dress when going out
Someone’s gentle touch roused Mel from her deep slumber and she twisted and turned, a frown forming on her face when the hands wouldn’t stop shaking her. She wanted to swipe her hand at whoever was disturbing her when a voice that wasn’t Annie or any of her maids filtered into her ears.“Mel?”‘Oh…’Mel’s eyes, already glued shut, took great effort to open and when she did, she blinked, the blurriness fading as her eyes came into focus, looking at the young girl she had feasted with last night.‘Ah. Now I remember. I followed them for the hunt.’Nora’s lips twitched with an apologetic smile, sorry for waking Mel up because the young woman was clearly displeased.Mel sat up and rubbed her eyes, a little groggy. “Morning,” she greeted Nora.Nora smiled with a slight nod, returning the greeting, “Good morning, my Lady.”Mel instinctively glanced at the side of the makeshift bed to find the bowl and towel gone.“Ah. I spread it outside on the tent roof to dry,” Nora shifted from her knel
He sighed. “I’ll join you later.” He nodded at the tent entrance. “Make yourself comfortable.”The tipsiness left Mel and it felt as if she had been brought back down to Earth. She shifted towards the entrance and then stopped. She whirled around to face Bjorn. He had stepped away only to pause when he noticed Mel’s sudden movement.“Where are you going?” she asked.“For a short walk,” he answered and then his brows lightly furrowed. “Why do you ask?”“Oh, that’s good.” She mellowed and rubbed her arm, looking down to shuffle her shoes against the grass. She drew in a sharp intake of breath and glanced up to meet his eyes. “Do you know of a river nearby? I would like to wash up before I lie down to sleep.”“You can do that the following morning,” he said deadpanned and Mel blinked, astounded. “What is it?” he asked, annoyance seeping into his tone at her reaction.“I’m sweaty. You want me to lie down in this state?” She swayed her arms around herself, demonstrating the light patches o
The forest-bound journey went on for quite a while, and far longer than even Mel had expected. Night fell and while Mel wondered how they could all move comfortably in the near-darkness, but Bjorn assured her that the part of the woods they were still in was safe since it was the closest part of their territory. Soon, the clouds drifted away to expose the beautiful sheen of the two white moons that glimmered high in the sky. Some of the moonlight filtered in through the trees, providing a subtle white light that made the forest ghostly beautiful. Lori kept Mel company throughout their journey, taking the young woman’s attention away from her brooding husband. Mel had mentioned at one point that she was hoping to assist with the hunt using her knowledge and relationship with plants but Lori subtly put down her recommendation, letting her know that some people may feel otherwise since this was something they had been doing for years and there may not really be anything new Mel could he
