Chapter 1

When monotone beep rings at 12:30, I always go to the cafeteria to order. I usually take my lunch at the 4th-floor veranda of the school campus. I was eating a sandwich and I was trying not to think about what happened during the class of Mr. Forester when Rico Turner puked in front of the class because he was so nervous to deliver his humorous speech about him putting a Lego in his nose and end up crying because it was stuck.

I headed back to the classroom when the beep rang at 1:00. I sat beside Theo Santiago and we discussed what might actually happen if a worm has claustrophobia. Theo loves to talk about silly things like how the breath of Kurt Callister could knock us down and how addicted Sara Elordi is to the smell of lard that she could spend her whole day inside the cafeteria.

“Guess who took her sleeping pill this morning,” Theo said, giggling. While Susanna Ramirez was sharing her discovery about Mona Lisa and her mailbox in the Louvre, Mrs. Kingston was sleeping. You could see the annoyance in Susanna’s face.

“I think Peppa Pig had a party last night,” Theo said.

“Why do you keep calling her that?” I asked.

“Reign Callister, look at her pinkish face, her big eyes and nostrils, she is Peppa.” Theo laughed loudly that he startled Mrs. Kingston. Mrs. Kingston noticed that no one was speaking in front so she called Sara to be the last one who would share her amazing discovery about arts.

“Did you notice that whenever Mrs. Kingston calls Sara in front, Sara is very excited?”

“Yes, why?”

“Because she loves the smell of lard,” he laughed again. Theo is the type of guy that every girl likes, he has perfect dark skin and his black hair is in curls, his blue eyes are like an ocean under eyelids. Sometimes, he likes to write stories on the back of his hands and they always end up messily scribbled. Theo is more than just a hot and good-looking guy. I know there is something behind his smile that made me question how his kinetic force impacted others intensely and even me.

“Reign do you want to go to the carnival and ride the Ferris Wheel?" I tried to swallow the lump on my throat when he asked that. I have never ridden a Ferris Wheel before. I am scared of heights. I still remember when we went hiking and there was this simple suspension bridge. I was so scared of crossing so I decided to stay and not to continue but Samantha – the girl who pretended as a friend told me that a shadow-like entity was lurking in that area. I tried to cross the bridge with legs that were wide open and knees that were bent down like I was a frog that was being trained to walk. I was on the verge of crying but she couldn’t stop laughing. Instead of helping me crossing the bridge, she was shaking it and I couldn’t stop screaming that I could summon something evil.

"Yeah," I answered. I would regret it. I was with Mark, Maya, and Kieffer – his squad.

We used Kieffer’s car and we went to Rochet’s first because Maya told us that she was starving and craving mashed potato. She ordered mashed potato with cheese, milk-shake, Mac n’ cheese, lasagna, spaghetti with meatballs. She didn’t share any of those, instead, she ate all of them. She eats a lot but she doesn’t gain weight. She's still in perfect shape.

“Guys I think I am going to be sick,” Maya said.

“I’m trying to tell you Maya, if you throw up in my car. I will let you walk to school every day,” Kieffer warned her.

Theo couldn’t stop glancing at Mark while he was peeking through the car’s window. Maya was still eating and Kieffer was humming the song on the car’s stereo. While me, I couldn’t stop thinking about the man who always appears in my head wearing a brown hoodie jacket. I couldn’t go near him because there is this force field that stops me from doing it. I wonder what is his intention and why he appears every time.

“Can you stop the car please, I am gonna throw up,” Maya said.

“For Pete’s sake Maya!” Kieffer said, irritated.

Kieffer immediately stopped the car. A lady shouted “Morning Sickness” when she saw her puking on the side of the road. She replied “I am not pregnant you idiot!” while saliva was hanging from her mouth. Kieffer gave her a tissue and bottled water to clean her mouth.

“Are you okay?” Mark asked her.

"Yeah I’m alright,” Maya replied. Kieffer’s face was in full disgust at what he saw.

“Because of your voraciousness, see what happened to you,” Kieffer confronted her while wiping out the excess sauce around her mouth.

Upon arriving at our destination, I saw a simple suspension bridge that we need to cross.

“Shit!” I muttered. My knees were trembling while walking towards it. They already crossed it but I was still trying to take a step. I thought we were going to the carnival

“You can do it Reign,” They said trying to uplift me. I managed to take steps but when I was in the middle, I looked below through the tiny gap of the wooden planks, it was so high.

“Look at me, don’t look below,” Theo said. I looked straight at them and slowly took steps. It was only five planks ahead of me when I ran and stumbled down. I was shaking in fear.

I felt so left out, but I could feel that they were trying hard not to. We just spent an hour there watching the sunset. I don't want to go home, but my aunt would scold me. Aunt Maria became my guardian when my mom and dad died in a car crash. I don't know but every time she sees me, her blood always boils. Her husband died 5 years ago because of lung cancer. She has three children-Virnah, Rebecca, and Kevin. They hate me too. Virnah and I used to be closed, but she changed. Aunt Maria stopped sustaining my needs so I have to find a way to do it by myself. Gaining income by writing essays and song lyrics. I want to leave Aunt Maria's house because I don't belong there. I want to discover more about me. I want to find my melody.

Fighting the temptation to use my earphones is not new to me while tutoring. The stress of making sure he gets the topic is a challenge. Theo’s parents did not hire me. I have been doing this for the rest of my 12th grade because of one incident. I called him a douchebag in the cafeteria last month when he cut the old earphones that I bought using the pennies that I collected. At that time, I wanted to earn money to satisfy my needs because my aunt stopped giving me allowances. Theo grabbed me by the arm and he brought me to the old bathroom. He made a deal and confessed that he did it because he wanted me to be his tutor due to my academic ranking here in Crestview. I asked him why he had to cut my earphones and his reply made me laugh. He said that it was the only way to get the attention of a psycho. To ruin things? He was wrong, if you ruin a property of a psycho, they would let your taste your own medicine. I did not accept the deal immediately and it took me

I saw him again. The man wearing a brown hoodie jacket and was walking towards me. The place was very quiet. You could only hear the rustle of leaves and the creaking sound of the rusty swings. The best place to die. I had to close my eyes as he carried me in his arms. The last thing that I remember was the sound of the car engine. "I made you a breakfast," a man said. I noticed him, he was the one who carried me and saved me. He was not the omen of death. I wasn't in heaven, but upon looking at his face, you would realize that angels exist in reality. Is it a coincidence that he was wearing the same as the one that I have been seeing in what I call The Yarn? "Eat it before your breakfast gets cold." "Where am I, and who are you?" I managed to ask even though, I felt like my voice was snatched by a giant octopus living under the sea. "I am August Manzano, but you can call me Auggie. I saw you in the abandoned children's park. I thought you were dead, but thank G

Auggie let me stay in their house. He bought me some new clothes and shoes. I couldn't refuse because I don't want to go back to my aunt's house. He told me that I could stay for as long as I want, but I am planning to find a new place if I had enough money already. I couldn't believe that Auggie and I go to the same school. I have never seen him in Crestview before. The day when we wore the same earphones. I felt a strong connection. Upon hearing the instrumental music, the walls suddenly turned into trees. We were in the forest part of The Yarn. You could feel the serenity as the wind caresses your skin and the sunlight illuminates your face. He brought me to a willow tree, and we spent the whole day there. We talked about our lives and our experiences. He mentioned this tiny dot that acts as a black hole. It is tiny, but it has the maw of a voracious animal. The Dot seems like the antagonist in our universe. It gets bigger and bigger until it devours you and separ

"Sorry, Theo.” "I couldn't blame you. At least, I know when you are lying or not," he said, drying off his face with a tissue. "So, how did you meet?" I cleared my throat, and I rested my back on the walls of the old bathroom. "He found me, lying unconscious in the children's park," I said. If I puke every time I lie on his face, he would be worried about my situation. I only lie when I don't want someone to worry about me. "I am not living in my aunt's house anymore. Auggie let me stay in his parents’ house." Theo went beside me, resting his back on the walls. "What about your fresh bruises?" "Because of Aunt Maria. She was just protecting her daughter." I couldn't blame Aunt Maria. If I was in her situation, I would do exactly the same. I always protect the people that I love. I don't care if their burdens transfer on me, as long as they're happy. "By the way, I want to show this short poem that I wrote last night. Let me know what you think." He handed me the

I made the wrong choice, leaving him all alone in that place, crying his pain out. I don't have a face to show, so I did not go to their house. I went to the abandoned children's park. They say the place is creepy and there is this ghost of a little girl swinging, appearing at the time of 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Legend says that she died around that time. She was killed by a serial killer. Upon arriving at that place, I felt a sudden rush of wind and the smell of wild berries piled up in my nose. I sat on the rusty swing, hoping that it wouldn’t break. I kept looking at the swing beside me, making sure that the little girl is not swinging with me. But if she appears, it would be great so that I could talk with her, telling her that everything will be okay. I just sat there for about an hour with my earphones on, listening to a podcast about life. What does life mean for me? I am in the cycle of falling to my rock-bottom to climbing the highest mountain and falling and c

Mark and I would go to the woods today. He just called me and told me that he wanted to hang out with me. I packed things that I could use like an extra shirt, food, and a knife in case a bigfoot would attack us. A car was honking outside, so I sprinted out of my room. I informed mom and dad that I would come home late. Mark stood outside his car like a coming of an age movie actor. I bowed my head a little bit to hide my smile. "How are you?" he asked, raising his hand for a high five. "Good" We went in his car, and he handed me a coffee. "For a good beating heart," he joked. "You mean palpitate." He chuckled. He started the engine, and I nearly bathed myself with hot coffee. He just laughed. Best Buddy thing. I was in a state of awkwardness while he was cool about the situation. I suddenly choked when he tapped my thighs. "Are you alright?" he asked with a concerned look. Why would he do that on my thighs when there was my shoulder that he could tap?

"Are you ready?" Auggie asked. "Yes," I replied. We used the same earphones and entered The Yarn. "Did you notice something different?" I asked. Something was wrong, we were in the woods, and it was my first time to see a cliff. There was no cliff in that part of The Yarn before. "Maybe the Dot did it." We went near it, and it was not a cliff, but it was a sinkhole. "Oh my goodness," I muttered. I couldn’t believe it. The Yarn was untangling itself. "We have to go," Auggie uttered. You could clearly see the trees falling down across the hole. It was getting wider and wider, and it was devouring everything. "We have to stop it Auggie. This is my home and I don't want to let the Dot ruin everything." He pulled me away from the hole when a crack suddenly emerged. We stayed far from it. "Please," I begged. "We will stop the Dot together." He hugged me and tried to comfort me, but I was still worried that I won't be able to enter again. I feel wea

I could feel the ground shaking, and I could hear the sound of the trees falling into the sinkhole. I tried to hum to forget that all of these are happening. We were in a pasture. Auggie put his head on my lap and lay on the grass. The sun was setting, so the sky looked so orange. Birds were going back to their nest, and we stayed there, waiting for the first star to appear. A butterfly suddenly landed on the flower in front of me. Auggie noticed it too. "Do you believe in the butterfly effect?" I asked, caressing his hair. "That a butterfly flapping its wings can cause a storm or tornado halfway around the world." "No, I only believe in your effect," he said, smiling. "What effect?" "That you can send chaos in my stomach that makes the butterflies even flutter their wings aggressively." I blushed a little bit. I stared at the butterfly. I tried to touch its wings, but it flew away in the direction of the sinkhole. The ground started to shake again. What if

  • Ear Phones On   Epilogue

"You ready for today?" Theo asked. I just nodded. It is Cupid's day. We were wearing red shirts and red pants. We looked like menstruation. I was going to perform the song that I sang when I was with Auggie in the children's park. I hope Auggie is happy wherever he is. I wish someday, we would meet in The Yarn again."Let's go?""Let's go"Everyone was wearing red, it was like we were in a sea of blood. Some were wearing headbands with the photo of cupid. We went to the auditorium."There are lots of students here. Are you nervous?" Theo asked."Yeah," I replied, rubbing my hands because I felt so tensed. I have never performed in front of a crowd before."I think I am going to pass out." Theo gave me a bottle of water. I know, I am not a good singer, but I have a voice to show. The song was for August Manzano, the one that made me realize that love is real. They announced the first one who will perform, and it was Mark."What the heck?" Theo was confused. Everyone cheer

"Find your partners, and we will be doing a treasure hunt," our camping instructor said. Theo went beside me. "Reign, are you okay?" he asked. "No," I replied. He hugged me. "I am so sorry that I left you alone," I said, crying on his chest. "It is okay Reign." August lied just to be with me and spend time with me. He even rented a house and enrolled in Crestview High. He had been diagnosed with a rare disease yet deadly, but he sacrificed his safety just to find me and explore the real world. Maybe it's true that I am cursed. That everyone leaves. If I lost Theo, I don't know what I am going to do with my life anymore. Auggie was isolated and unconscious in Crestview Private Hospital. I couldn't even see him in The Yarn. I miss him so much. I couldn't eat nor sleep thinking about him and blaming myself. I prayed for him to hold on and stay. If I knew that all of these things would happen, I should've ended my life. Auggie's Chapter (Backstory) My name is August Manzano and I have Severe Combined Immunodeficiency or SCID. I have a low number of T cells-a type of white blood cells that make up the immune system to keep me from getting sick. I am not able to fight off germs. To protect me from infections, my parents isolated me and separated me from them. We are following a strict protocol during my isolation including limiting who enters the house that I am in right now and washing hands before entering and touching me. All my life I've been staying here without meeting new people. I wonder what the outside world looks like. I really want to go outside and swim in the ocean, and explore beautiful places as I see on TV and in magazines. I found a way to escape, not literally escape and leave the house, but to create a whole new universe inside my head. I spend the day with my earphones on and exploring the universe that I created. The universe that I believe is the reflection of the rea

Why do I lose everyone? Am I cursed? She came back to me, but she left so quick. I think I am cursed. Why does everyone leave you, if you keep them with you? That day when I saw her, I thought I wasn't going to lose her again, but everything happened so quickly. In a snap of a finger, she was gone. I still treated her like a sister even though she had changed because of her mother, and I waited for years for her to call me Fish sauce again, and it happened, but it was her decision to end everything. I couldn't blame her for that. I am glad that Aunt Maria is in jail now, while Rebecca and Kevin are in an orphanage. Virnah mentioned before that Aunt Maria was the least favorite of their parents. She always received punishment. Aunt Maria is the eldest and my mom is the youngest. Mom was the favorite and all the things she wanted were always provided, but Aunt Maria wasn't able to receive anything maybe because of her attitude. She poured her revenge on me. I felt bad for her when she w

They say that the people who are supposed to protect you from monsters turned to be monsters themselves. My mom and dad passed away 10 years ago in a car accident, and Aunt Maria became my guardian. A terrible guardian. I experienced emotional and physical abuse from her. I almost killed myself, but I thought of holding on. I thought of staying even though I was tired. That was when I started using my earphones as an escape. They told me that I was selfish, when in fact I wasn't. I sacrificed everything just to give them the things that they wanted. I think Aunt Maria changed Virnah, her eldest daughter. She was good to me, but her attitude suddenly changed when the evil words from Aunt Maria's mouth were inflicted into her mind. She has been manipulated. I remember when I was bullied when I was 11 years old by the mean girls in Crestview, and she protected me. She punched the girl with a gap between her two front teeth, and always wearing a pink fitted shirt and a skirt
