Octavia shut the restaurant door with a sharp push, her hands trembling against the cold metal. Nathaniel stood silently beside her, his brow furrowed in thought. She avoided his gaze, instead staring at the door as if it could shield her from the storm brewing outside—and inside her own chest.

“Octavia.” Nathaniel’s voice broke the silence, calm but firm.

“Not now,” she replied, her voice low. Her thoughts were too tangled to let in his rationality.

“Jason’s asking questions,” he said softly, tilting his head toward the kitchen where the twins were waiting.

Her heart clenched. Jason’s innocent curiosity earlier echoed in her ears: “Do you know him?” The idea of Carl worming his way into her children’s lives sent a wave of nausea through her.

She finally turned to Nathaniel, her jaw set. “I’ll handle it.”

“You don’t have to do this alone.”

She appreciated his support—she always had—but this wasn’t about Nathaniel. This was her mess, and she wasn’t going to let Carl unravel the life sh

Jason’s voice broke the uneasy silence in the kitchen. “Mommy, why didn’t you tell me he was my dad?”Octavia’s breath caught in her throat. The note Carl had slipped to Jason sat crumpled in her palm, but it might as well have been branded on her skin. She knelt to face her son, forcing herself to meet his questioning gaze.“Jason…” she began, her voice measured, though her heart raced. “Some things are complicated, and I wanted to wait until you and Avery were old enough to understand.”“But he already knows us,” Jason countered, his young mind grasping at fragments he didn’t fully understand. “He said he’s been looking for us.”Her lips parted, but no words came.Avery, sitting at the table with her stuffed rabbit, piped up, “Is he a bad guy, Mommy? You looked scared when you saw him.”Nathaniel stepped into the doorway, his presence grounding Octavia. He said nothing, but his eyes carried a silent offer of support. She nodded subtly, gathering strength.“Listen to me, both of you,

Octavia had not expected Kristine Stewart's return, but it did not surprise her. People like Kristine never actually disappeared; they simply waited for the right moment to strike.Jade's voice kept going in her head as she paced around her living room, the gravity of the conversation seeping in. "Octavia, she's been asking questions about you. She seemed to be piecing something together. "I'm not sure what, but it feels intentional."Kristine excelled in "Intentionality".The twins' laughter upstairs contrasted sharply with the turmoil inside Octavia's chest. She couldn't let Kristine drag her back into the chaos she had just escaped. Her phone vibrated. She took it from the coffee table, her breath seized as Carl's name flashed across the screen."What now?" she said before responding."Octavia," Carl said quickly, his tone tougher than normal. "We need to meet." Tonight."She sat down, clutching the phone more tightly. "Why? Is this about Kristine?"Yes," he admits. "I didn't reali

"Why did you tell me to come alone if you weren't planning to show up?" Octavia's voice trembled with controlled rage as she grabbed her phone tighter and walked near the park's deserted bench. The night air held an unsettling silence, which worsened her growing irritation.Kristine, on the other end, used a scornful, almost amusing tone. "Oh, I am here, dear. "Seeing you scurry around like a lost little lamb is far more entertaining than I expected."Octavia paused in her tracks, looking at her surroundings. "What do you want?" she demanded. "You've already taken enough."A loud laugh rang through the phone. "Oh, Octavia, it's not about what I took. This is roughly what I'm owed. And just now, I am more interested in what you have kept hidden."Her chest tightened. "If you're threatening me, don't bother. "I am not the same person you pushed around five years ago.""Good," Kristine said effortlessly. "Because neither am I. Let's just say I've figured out how to get what I want withou

“Why would Jason Stewart want to meet me?” Octavia’s voice barely rose above a whisper as she stared at the man holding the envelope. She crossed her arms, masking the unease bubbling within.Jason smirked, the corner of his lips curling with a mixture of arrogance and amusement. “Relax, Octavia. I didn’t come here to hurt you. I just thought you’d appreciate knowing what Kristine’s been up to.” He held the envelope out to her, his movements slow and deliberate. She didn’t reach for it. Instead, she narrowed her eyes. “And why should I trust anything you say? You’re her stepbrother.”Jason let out a low chuckle. “Let’s just say my loyalty to Kristine only goes so far. Take it or leave it.” He dangled the envelope in front of her like bait.Octavia’s stomach tightened. She didn’t want to play his games, but curiosity gnawed at her resolve. What could possibly be inside that he deemed important enough to risk contacting her? Against her better judgment, she grabbed the envelope and step

Octavia tightened her grip on the phone as the anonymous message stared back at her: Your move. The video replayed in her mind—Audrey and Asher laughing and running through the park, completely oblivious to the person filming them. Her stomach churned.“Who sent this?” she whispered, though she was alone in her office. The edges of her vision blurred with panic.A sharp knock on the door snapped her back. Jade stepped in, her face scrunched with concern. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost. What’s going on?”Octavia’s voice cracked as she spoke. “Someone sent me this.” She thrust the phone toward Jade.Jade frowned as she watched the video. “What the hell? Who filmed this?”“That’s the million-dollar question,” Octavia said, pacing. “And the message—‘Your move.’ What does that even mean? What do they want?”Jade scowled. “It’s obviously a threat. But who would stoop this low?”“Kristine,” Octavia said, the name dripping from her lips like venom. “She’s desperate. If this isn’t her hand

“What are you doing here, Kristine?” Octavia’s voice was calm, but her gaze was as sharp as a blade.Kristine leaned back against the ornate chair, her crimson lips curving into a smile. She placed the manila folder on the table between them, patting it like a treasured possession. “Oh, darling, don’t be so cold. We used to be practically family, remember?”Octavia didn’t bite. She crossed her arms, waiting.Kristine’s smile widened. “Fine. Straight to business. You’ve been busy digging into my past, haven’t you? I’m flattered, really.”“I don’t have time for games, Kristine. Say what you came here to say,” Octavia snapped.Kristine arched an eyebrow. “Impatient, are we? Alright.” She flipped open the folder, revealing photographs, bank statements, and signed letters. “This is enough to ruin you, Octavia. Your perfect little empire, your pristine reputation—gone in an instant.”Octavia’s breath hitched, but she didn’t let Kristine see her falter. “You’re bluffing.”Kristine chuckled,

She said, ‘This time, I’ll take them where she’ll never find them.’”Nathaniel stood, his expression hardening. “Are you sure about this?”Carl shot him a glare. “Why would I be here if I wasn’t?”“Carl—” Octavia began, but he interrupted her.“She’s desperate. “Explain this to me again, Jason,” Octavia said, her voice low but sharp as she leaned across the dining table. Her fingers drummed on the surface, her patience waning. "How did Kristine get a photo of my kids in their beds?"Jason, who sat with his arms crossed, looked away, guilt etched into every line of his face. He’d been roped into Kristine’s schemes for years, and now his attempts at redemption were falling short in the face of this new twist. "I don’t know," he muttered.“Not good enough,” Octavia snapped, standing abruptly. The chair screeched against the hardwood floor. "If you’re really on my side now, you’ll start giving me answers. Real answers."Carl, who had been pacing in the background, stopped mid-step. His eyes darkened as they flicked to Jason. "She couldn’t have gotten access to the house without help. You know something, don’t you?"Jason exhaled heavily, raking his hands through his hair. "Look, Kristine’s been unraveling for months. She’s desperate, and despera

Octavia sat in the cold, dimly lit interrogation room, her wrists still sore from the handcuffs. The room smelled faintly of bleach, and the hum of the overhead light was the only sound breaking the silence. Across from her sat Detective Harris, his expression unreadable as he sorted through a manila folder stuffed with papers. Her gaze drifted to the one-way mirror. She knew Carl was out there, pacing, arguing with whoever would listen. Jade was probably calling every lawyer in the city. But right now, she was alone, and Kristine had managed to sink her claws in once again."Mrs. Davis," Detective Harris began, his tone as flat as the table between them. "We have substantial evidence linking you to multiple accounts used in laundering money for a fake charity organization. These accounts are under your name."She clenched her fists under the table, her nails digging into her palms. "That’s a lie," she said firmly. "Those accounts aren’t mine."He slid a photo across the table. It was

The conference room was silent except for the faint hum of the air conditioning. Octavia sat at the head of the table, her back straight and her hands clasped tightly in front of her. Across from her, Jason Stewart sat, looking nothing like the arrogant man she had once known. His face was pale, his lips thin, and his eyes darted around the room like a cornered animal."You have one chance," she said, her voice calm but sharp. "One. You tell me everything, Jason. Every detail, every lie, every transaction. And if I even sense you’re holding back—"Carl interrupted, his voice cutting through the tension like a blade. "We’re done here. You don’t get to negotiate with us. You’re not the one holding the cards."Jason shifted uncomfortably, shooting Carl a wary glance. "I’m not negotiating," he said quickly. "I just—I need to know I’m not walking into my own execution here. Kristine’s dangerous, Octavia. You don’t understand what she’s capable of.""Don’t pretend like you’re any better," C

"How could you let this happen, Carl?" Octavia's voice cracked as she stared at him, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. She stood near the kitchen counter, her face a mixture of frustration and fear. Audrey and Asher were playing in the living room, their laughter a cruel contrast to the chaos threatening to upend everything.Carl leaned against the kitchen island, his jaw tightening. "I didn’t let this happen, Octavia. You think I wanted your accounts frozen? This is exactly what Kristine wants—to make you doubt everything, including me.""She’s winning," Octavia snapped, her voice low but sharp. "The media is already eating this up. Headlines about me being a fraud? It’s everywhere. My business reputation is in shreds. Do you even understand how long it took me to build all of this?"Carl’s face softened, but he didn’t move closer. He knew better than to try comforting her right now. "I understand more than you think. That’s why I’ve already instructed my legal team to file fo

The air in the living room felt charged with unspoken words as Carl paced back and forth, his jaw clenched so tightly that it looked like it might snap. Octavia sat on the couch, her hands gripping the edges of her skirt to stop them from shaking. The warrant had been real, and now, police officers were rifling through her home as if she were a criminal. An officer entered the room, holding a folder. “Mrs. Davis, we’ll need you to come with us for questioning.”Octavia’s head snapped up. “Questioning? On what grounds?”The officer’s face remained impassive. “We’re investigating a fraud case linked to your name. Several transactions from your business accounts are flagged as suspicious.”Octavia shot up from the couch, anger surging through her. “That’s impossible! I run my accounts through an auditor—I don’t handle the finances directly. There’s no way—”Carl stepped forward, his voice a low growl. “Who initiated this investigation? Who made the claim?”The officer flipped through his

Octavia stared at Kristine, the smugness dripping from her every word. She hadn’t even sat down, as if her presence alone was meant to intimidate. Carl’s posture stiffened, his eyes narrowing as he stood beside Octavia, a rare unified front against the woman who had brought so much destruction to both their lives.“Get to the point, Kristine,” Carl said coldly. His tone was sharp, devoid of the patience he’d once reserved for her manipulations.Kristine let out a light laugh, tossing her hair back. “Oh, Carl, still so eager to dismiss me. You haven’t changed much, have you? But this time, I’ve come prepared.”She dropped the envelope onto the coffee table between them, the sound echoing in the suddenly tense silence.“What is it now?” Octavia demanded, her arms crossed. “Another fabricated claim? Another lie you’re desperate to cling to?”Kristine raised an eyebrow, unfazed. “Oh, this is no lie, sweetheart. It’s a truth you’re not ready for.” She paused, savoring the suspense. “Open i

The envelope sat on the kitchen counter, taunting Octavia like a ticking time bomb. She stared at it, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, while Jade’s voice echoed from the other end of the phone.“They’re really coming for custody?” Jade’s disbelief was evident. “Jason and Kristine have sunk to a new low. How can they even think they’d stand a chance?”“That’s what I’d like to know,” Octavia replied sharply, her voice trembling despite her attempt to stay calm. “But this isn’t just about standing a chance. It’s about dragging me into their mess and turning my life upside down. Again.”“You need a lawyer. A good one,” Jade insisted. “One who can tear apart whatever game they’re playing before it gets too far.”Octavia clenched her jaw, her free hand resting on the edge of the counter. “I’ve already contacted someone. But Jade, it’s not just the petition. It’s the fact that Jason showed up here, smug as hell, like he knew he had the upper hand.”Jade groaned audibly. “He’s just tr

“Explain this!” Octavia slammed the tablet onto the dining table, her voice sharp enough to cut through the tense atmosphere. On the screen was Kristine’s bold accusation: Carl Dawson embezzled millions from his family’s company, claims Kristine Stewart.Carl stood frozen by the counter, his hands gripping the edge as if it were the only thing keeping him upright. His face, once composed, now betrayed a mix of shock and frustration.“She’s lying,” he said firmly, but his voice lacked the conviction Octavia needed to hear.Octavia narrowed her eyes, folding her arms across her chest. “And why should I believe you? Kristine may be a manipulative liar, but this?” She pointed to the screen. “This isn’t something she would pull out of thin air unless she had something to back it up.”“She doesn’t,” Carl shot back, finally stepping forward. “She’s bluffing, Octavia. She knows how to play the game, and she’s banking on us reacting.”Nathaniel entered the room just then, the tension thickenin

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Carl’s voice broke through the early morning quiet, his face a mix of anger and desperation.Octavia froze, her hand still clutching the photo she had just retrieved from the package. She glanced at Carl, standing in the doorway of the living room, his expression sharp. The kids were upstairs, thankfully unaware of the growing storm below. She steadied herself, sliding the photograph onto the coffee table before answering. “I didn’t want to worry you. There’s already enough going on.”Carl’s eyes flicked to the picture on the table. It was impossible to miss the chilling words scrawled on the back in red ink: I’m always watching. His jaw clenched as he grabbed the photo, holding it up like evidence in a trial. “You thought I didn’t need to know about this?”“Lower your voice,” she said sharply, casting a glance toward the staircase. “The kids are upstairs.”“You’re deflecting, Octavia. This isn’t about them. This is about you keeping things from me. Again.”H
