Jessie's POV
“Ugh…”
I woke up to a tingly itch on my face.
With my weak hands, I kicked off whatever it was that was causing it. But the itch just came back, even worse this time.
I forced my eyes open and found myself staring at a mass of golden brown fur. It was an Eskimo puppy that would not stop licking my face.
I smiled painfully, realizing it was the stray dog I picked up in the rain some days ago.
The little guy seemed ecstatic that I was awake. He started jumping around, wagging its tail and barking happily.
Disoriented and feeling feverish, I coughed heavily and sat up, trying to make sense of my surroundings.
Memories from last night began to flood back,- I had ended up in front of Gavin’s mansion hoping he’d forgive me and change his mind about my mother.
“Mom!” I gasped, suddenly remembering the doctor’s ultimatum from yesterday.
Panic gripped me when I grabbed my phone and found that it was already 3pm.
I quickly dialed Uncle Sam to check on my mom. “What if the hospital had made good their threat? What if they had unplugged her and I was here passed out?!”
Many thoughts attacked me but as soon as Uncle Sam answered the phone, my mind was calm.
“Your mother is fine, Jess. Where are you? Have you eaten?”
I felt a wave of relief wash over, but the weight of the situation was obvious in his voice.
“Don’t worry about me, Uncle Sam. I’ll eat when my mom is alright.”
Suddenly, a sharp pain set in in my head and chest, but I held it in, I couldn’t let Uncle Sam know I was in pain.
“Just watch over her for me Uncle,” I said shakily, “Thank you so much, thank you for everything you’re doing.”
The pain in my chest persisted, followed by an outburst of a hard cough.
“I must have caught a cold from last night.”
As if the little guy sensed my distress, he rubbed its head against me.
“It’s fine, boy, you don’t have to feel bad for me.” Tears filled my eyes as I picked him up, “I’ll be fine once mom is fine.”
But how was I going to get this money for mom’s surgery?
In my despair, a slender figure with cold merciless eyes caught my attention.
I froze, shocked that he was that close. His presence startled me, and ceased my cough for a moment.
Suddenly, the gate creaked open, giving me access into the mansion.
Did this mean Gavin had finally decided to forgive me? Will he help me now?
He stood at the patio, looking composed and utterly unaffected by my distress.
Finally, I stood in front of him, staring back at him with pale face.
“One billion,” he said, his voice slicing through the silence.
“I’ll pay off your family’s debt and cover your mother’s surgery expenses.”
“One billion, three hundred thousand dollars. Marry me”
I was stunned. Unable to process his words immediately. I rubbed my aching forehead, trying to make sense of what he had just said.
Before I could say anything, Gavin had already left the room.
Just yesterday he wanted to marry me for revenge, today, he was offering me money in return.
Desperate for answers, I ran after him, only to collide with a maid.
“Oh, I’m so sorry,” I apologized profusely, looking over me in search of Gavin.
“You must be Jessie,” she said.
“Yes, I am…”
“My name is Sandra and I’ll be serving you for the next few days. The room next to the boss’s own has been cleaned up for you, and he’s ordered you to stay here a few days”
I furrowed my brows in confusion, and suddenly my cough returned.
“I’ve made you a light meal, with some medication for your cough, ma’am.”
Despite the shocking turn of events, Sandra’s kind demeanor filled me with ease and comfort that I felt relieved quickly.
“Please call me Jessie.”
Shortly after taking the medicine, my phone rang. It was Uncle Sam.
“You did it!” He screamed into the phone, “Your mother will be well again.”
“Uncle, what are you talking about?”
“Your mother’s surgery has been scheduled for tomorrow, Jessie. She will be operated by the best of the bests.”
“Uncle Sam…” I called, trying to understand what was going on.
“Thanks to the intervention of a foreign specialist, your mother’s surgery will be successfully done, Jessie. You saved her! You saved her!!”
Overwhelmed with relief, I realized Gavin had taken care of everything. He wasn’t heartless… he wasn’t cruel at all.
Just then, I heard the sound of car outside and guessed that Gavin had returned.
With Luca in my hand (the puppy Eskimo), I hurried out to meet him, only to be met with his cold gaze.
His dominant and proud demeanor made me lower my eyes in submission. The gratefulness in my heart tamed into nothing.
As he came closer, I felt my heart pounding heavily.
He stopped in front of me, and held out a document,
“Let’s get married today, and sign the contract?”
Jessie's POVIt is one thing to be proposed to,It is another thing to be proposed to by Gavin Pierre— a man who doesn't do anything without a second motive. His actions left me reeling. How could he expect me to marry him under these circumstances? "Marriage Contract?" I repeated as if I had misheard him.Gavin Pierre paused, turning towards me with a blank expression. "What about it?" "Gavin, this is madness. You and I together, its not possible.. You don't even love me..." "You're even dumber than I thought,” he sighed, “Look here, not all marriages are for love. Some are transactional.""I dont want to marry on transaction, Gavin. I want to be in love with my husband.""Love?” A dry scoff escaped his lips. “Then this makes my revenge all the more sweeter." He answered with a triumphant smirk.A few minutes later, we were seated across each other, I couldn't tell if it was the unsigned document before me or his piercing gaze that had my hands trembling uncontrollably."We...
Jessie’s POVAs if he could read my mind. My heart raced as he leaned in. His breath warm against my skin. I fought with all my strength to keep her body from yearning for him, but my eyes were half closed, and my lips were already itching to be touched by his. Gavin paused, his triumphant smirk suddenly turned cocky. His voice low and mocking. “What’s the matter, Jess? Nervous?”I swallowed hard, feeling my cheeks warm up with color.“No,” I lied, my voice barely a whisper. “This… just doesn’t feel right…” I stammered, my heart racing out of my chest.“I don’t care about right or wrong.” He murmured, his lips inches away from mine.“What matters is that you belong to me now. And I intend to claim what’s mine.” Without waiting for my response, Gavin captured my lips in a kiss— both possessive and demanding. As soon as our lips met, I melted into his arms.My body responded to Gavin’s touch, yearning for more, longing for more, despite my better judgement. His hands moved up my ba
Jessie’s POVI clutched my purse tightly, trying to calm the raging thoughts within me.“How could one person be so multi faceted?” I thought. One minute he was raging, another he was sweet. By this time, Uncle Sam halted at a hospital door marked VIP and turned towards me.“Jess, you don’t look like yourself. Is everything alright?”I nodded swiftly with a smile on my face. “I just want to see Mom,”Uncle Sam pulled the door open and I was immediately awed by the sight of it. Its luxurious furnishings and serene atmosphere was a sharp contrast to the regular rooms we were used to.I hurried to mother’s side and I was instantly struck by the trace of life in her face. She looked better than I had seen her in weeks. Tears welled up as I sat beside her, taking her hand in mine.“Mom…” I whispered, “You look so beautiful…” I felt a gentle squeeze on my hand as I spoke, and for the first time— for the very first time, my mother opened her eyes and she even managed a smile. “My baby…”
Jessie’s POV“Jessie?” I froze, my heart skipping a beat. It was Ryan Cookie, my ex-boyfriend. His familiar face brought a rush of memories and emotions I wasn’t prepared for.Emotions I, in fact, didn’t want to deal with. So slowly, I retraced my steps and backed away but almost immediately, his firm grip on my arm stopped me. “Don’t walk away from me,” he bellowed, “I came here to talk.”“I can’t talk right now,” I replied quickly, moving to turn away.“I said wait!” Ryan repeated, dragging me back. “Ryan, why are you doing this? What do you want?”“I heard something unbelievable, and I’m here to confirm it.”“But what’s that got to do with me?”“Everything.” He bellowed, his eyes scanning my left fingers, then a mocking smile spread on his face. “I guess it is not true.”“I knew no one in their right senses would want anything to do with you.”I didn’t know if to be insulted or offended by his words, I just wanted to leave here and go to Gavin.I decided to turn away but Ryan’
GAVIN's POVI have never been more unsettled in my life… well, except a few times— once or twice, and they all had to do with Jessie. I glanced at my wristwatch repeatedly, thinking, worrying about her. I caught myself repeatedly wondering if I was a bit much with the kiss. But damn… I couldn’t help myself. Just like that night. It was almost midnight and I was losing patience. “I should gone after her,” I murmured, regretting that I allowed her leave. Uneasy, I finally decided to call and she wouldn’t pick up. I was just about to go in search of her when my phone rang unexpectedly. At first, I thought it was her. I wanted it to be her. But it wasn’t, it was the specialists.Me: Hello, Doctor Hophni.Doctor Hophni: I’m afraid, Mr. Pierre, we might have to cancel our appointment tomorrow.“What?!” I exclaimed, my head spinning in all directions. “Why? Look, someone’s life depends on this. She’s precious… I can’t… what can I do? I can’t disappoint her please.”Doctor Hophni:
JESSIE’s POVWaiting for mom’s surgery to be over felt like an eternity. The minutes were longer, the hours were unbearable. Uncle Sam and I sat in the stiff plastic chairs just outside the operating room, the fluorescent lights buzzing as loud as my thoughts.I tried to distract myself by counting the tiles on the floor, but my mind kept drifting back to mom. I didn’t even want to think for one second that she wouldn’t make it.Minutes turned into hours. Every time the doors swung open, my heart would leap, only to come crashing down.Uncle Sam tried to keep me calm, but he wasn’t doing a good job either. He was visibly shaking and seeing him like that tightened the knot in my chest even tighter. Finally one of the doctors emerged, his face grim. I jolted to my feet, my pulse racing. As the head surgeon approached us, I could see the cloud of concern around him before he even spoke.“Jessie…” he started, “We’ve done everything we can, but there’s a chance your mother might not mak
Jessie’s POVMe: Hello, this is Jessie Ford… Caller: Miss Ford, we recently received your application…My heart pounded as the voice on the other end continued.“…And we found you to be exactly what we need in our firm.”“What?!” I exclaimed, almost in disbelief.Caller: Your training begins in a week.“Oh, thank you Ma’am,” I responded, “Thank you so much.”As soon as the call ended, I began to dance in excitement. It seemed like all my miracles were happening in a day. Mother had gotten better, and now a job?! A job from only the biggest stock market company in the city. I applied at least three years ago to the internship position in that stock firm, hoping to discover the main reason behind my family’s bankruptcy. Even though my dream was to become a doctor, well, when life happens, a lot of things change and so did my dream. Now, my only dream was to restore my family to what it originally was, or even better, and I was one step closer. As I turned around, I realized I wasn
Jessie’s POVToday marked exactly five days since I started working at Yates Stock Exchange Company. It was the last day of the work week and even though my heart was filled with hope and optimism for the new life, I was exhausted from juggling both work and mom’s medical care.I was looking forward to the weekend, but most especially I was looking forward to mom’s discharge. The elevator doors opened and I came face to face with my supervisor, Mr Dani Smith, for a man in his late twenties, he looked older than his age— not in a bad way. His salt and pepper hair and the faint lines around his eyes gave him a distinct look.I sauntered into the elevator and greeted Mr Dani, and he gave me a smile I had come to like— warm and welcoming.“You don’t look well.” He commented.“Oh no, I’m alright sir. I’m just a bit tired.”We engaged in small talk as the elevator descended the twenty three floors of the building.“Would you like a ride? I’m going your way anyway,” Mr Dani asked, and hones
