Jennah glanced out the window as she rubbed her hair dry. The snow was falling from the dark night sky. She hung the towel over the curtain rod and turned back to the mirror. She hadn’t heard anything from Dominic yet and she didn’t know how to go about contacting him. Did she go to bed and just hope he showed up while she slept—again? Should she try to concentrate and see if she could reach him?
Sighing, she walked out to the small sitting area and picked up her book. Either way, she was going to go climb under the covers and relax. She didn’t have to get up before dawn to go to work, and for the next twenty-four hours, she didn’t have to deal with crazed, holiday-afflicted people.
She climbed under the covers and sat back against the pillows. Closing her eyes, she let out a slow breath and allowed all the tension from the last few days to ease out of her shoulders. She slid down further on the pillows. Her book wasn’t even going to get opened.
“Hello, beautiful.”
Dominic’s deep voice moved right through her. “Hi.” She turned around to see him standing in the shadows behind her. “I didn’t think I was going to see you tonight.”
He stepped toward her slowly. “I was being selfish. I wanted to wait until you were asleep so I could see you and not just talk to you.”
She laughed quietly. “How did you know I was? You really have to explain how this works to me.”
“I said I would.” He stopped in front of her and ran his hand lightly down her hair. “You kept it down.” His voice was lower.
Jennah tried to ignore the way her body responded to his voice. “Before you distract me, you need to tell me how we’re here.”
He sighed and dropped his hand away from her hair. “All right, let’s at least be comfortable while I do.” His eyes roamed over her face. “Picture your room for me, Jennah.”
She closed her eyes, and when she opened, them they were sitting on her bed. She looked down to see she was dressed and not in her housecoat. He chuckled, making her look back at him.
“You control it enough to be dressed. So the rest should be easy for you.” He leaned down on his side and watched her. “I’m not sure how to break this down for you. I’ve been aware of it for a long time.”
“So, there are others?” She leaned back against the pillows so she could study his face. When he moved his head, she saw the swollen, red marks on his cheek. She sat up quickly again. “What happened?” Gently, she touched the side of his jaw so he’d turn his head.
“Ah, I forgot to not think about that. My face ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
She lightly traced the swollen flesh on his cheek. “And where was that?”
He smirked. “In front of a hard fist.”
She frowned and dropped her hand. “You’re not going to tell me, are you?”
He propped himself up so his face was closer to hers. “I really don’t want to waste time with that.” He moved his eyes over her lips before looking back at her eyes.
She searched his dark eyes and felt like she was being drawn into them. “I’m normally not so complacent.”
He grinned. “I’m normally not so evasive, but I need to be right now.”
She bit her lip. “Tell me how to work this—what is this we’re doing?”
“I really don’t know the technicalities of it. I just know how to do it.” He shrugged. “We can only do it with others that have the ability, though.”
She sat back again, unable to think being that close to him. “And we can do it awake or asleep?” She already knew the answer to both.
“Yes.”
She frowned. “So, you can just pop into my head whenever you want?”
“As you can into mine.”
She bit her lip. “Is there a way to prevent that?” She shrugged. “I may not always be in the mood for company.”
He grinned. “Are you saying I’m not invited when you’re in the shower?”
She blushed. “Something like that.”
He rubbed a hand over his jaw tentatively. “Just picture a closed door inside your head.”
She raised an eyebrow at him.
“Try it,” he coaxed.
She closed her eyes and thought of a door inside her mind, pausing only for a second to note how ridiculous it seemed. When she opened her eyes, she was alone in her room and awake—wasn’t she?
She sat up quickly. “Dominic? Dom!” She gawked around. “Oh fudge! Now what?” Taking a deep breath, she leaned back, closed her eyes, and thought of the door opening again.
She was afraid to open her eyes and look, so she squinted and saw Dominic leaning on her bed, smiling at her. She opened them. “That was...” She laughed. “Weird.”
He slid closer to her so he was leaning on his elbow a few inches away from her. She stopped breathing as his hand moved slowly down the length of her hair.
“I believe we were interrupted last night.”
She watched his hand travel up her arm, leaving a path of shivers in its wake. His soft touch glided over her shoulder and into the back of her hair. With gentle pressure from his large hand, she let him pull her down toward him. “How real is this?”
He leaned back into the pillow without releasing her. His breath tickled her lips when he whispered, “As real as you want it to be.” His warm mouth brushed over hers, once, twice, before his hold on her head became firmer.
She inhaled the dark, masculine scent of him when he stopped inches from her face and looked into her eyes. His black eyes were heavy with the same desire she felt climbing inside her. When his grasp tightened on the back of her head, she gasped and let him pull her mouth to his.
His kiss was deep and gentle. The roughness of his whiskers brushed against her cheek, and she welcomed the contrast next to his soft, firm mouth. When he lowered his head again, she found herself quickly flipped onto her back with him leaning over her.
The few seconds he paused to search her eyes felt like long minutes as she waited for his kiss again. His hand tightened in her hair as his mouth lowered back to hers. This kiss wasn’t gentle and soft. His mouth crushed against hers and his tongue demanded entrance into her mouth.
Her whole body flushed with need when he deepened the kiss and pulled her tighter against his body. She grasped the back of his head, not wanting him to stop. His arm moved under her shoulders as he lifted his mouth from hers and moved it roughly down her throat. She hissed out a breath when he leaned over her and placed his hard thigh between hers. Her body was throbbing with need.
With one hand, he lifted her body into his and rocked against her. She could feel how hard he was through their clothes and wished for the material to go away. In that instant, she found her bare waist pressed against the heat of his skin. He growled, burying his face into her throat.
He moved his hand up over her bare hip and lifted his head so he could trail his mouth down the front of her. She realized then that she’d imagined all her clothes gone but her bra and underwear.
She ran her hands down over the hard muscles of his back and stopped when she came to material. She’d left his on, as well. Moving her hands back up slowly, she felt formed muscles in his back and realized he was as big as he appeared to be.
He lifted his head and looked down at her with half closed eyes. “It’s been so long for me...” He nipped at her jaw lightly with his teeth. “But I can’t be making noises in my sleep where I am...” He ran his hand up to the bottom edge of her bra and skimmed his fingers lightly over it. “You, on the other hand...” His hand moved down over her waist and kept going until it was on the inside of her underwear.
“Dom...” His mouth crushed down on hers and cut off any protest she was about to make. As his hand brushed over the wetness, she moaned into his mouth and arched her hips into his touch. He slowed the kiss to match the teasing strokes of his fingers. The slower he moved, the hotter her body burned.
Each time his fingers passed over her throbbing clit, he lifted his mouth away so he could hear her gasp quietly. “So beautiful,” he whispered against her lips.
When he dipped one finger inside, she panted out a breath and grasped his shoulders. He lifted his body away from hers and watched her through lowered lashes. He pushed two fingers inside her and brought his hand against her swollen flesh as he did. She groaned in the back of her throat and closed her eyes.
“That’s it, let me.” His rasping voice was beside her ear and she could hear his breathing was almost as heavy as hers. He moved his hand out slowly and then brought it roughly to rock against her flesh.
She pulled his mouth back to hers and kissed him with the desperate need she felt. His hand connected with her flesh harder and she groaned, and then bit his lip. Grasping her head in one hand, his mouth assaulted hers, driving her up even higher.
With hard caresses, he pushed his hand into her over and over, and then lifted his mouth away from hers so he could watch her. She panted and gasped, arching into him, needing what he was giving her. She moaned loudly when the first waves passed through her and her muscles clenched around his fingers. He just kept moving his hand against her and drove her over into the hardest orgasm she’d ever had.
When his hand stopped moving, he continued to hold it against her as he held her tightly against him. She turned her head into his shoulder and lay there with her eyes closed for a few moments. She could feel the tension in his body and the shaking as he tried to control himself. “That’s...” She swallowed. “Not fair to you.”
He took a deep breath and then kissed the side of her neck. “I can’t right now, Jennah. I want to more than anything else, but I can’t take the chance.”
She stiffened and moved back from him. “You’re not married, are you?”
He slid his hand out of her underwear and rested it on her stomach. “No.” He leaned up to look down at her. “I promise I will explain everything as soon as I can do it safely.”
She frowned. “Are you in danger?” She watched several thoughts go through his eyes as he tried to decide what to tell her.
“I’m as safe as I can be for now.”
She pushed herself up and studied him. “Can I help? I am a cop, remember?”
He chuckled. “I remember. No, you being a cop would definitely not make things safer for me right now.” He turned his head as if he was looking at something on the other side of the room. “I have to go.” He sat up and leaned closer to her. “Sleep well, beautiful.” He brushed his mouth over hers, and then was gone.
She let out a long breath and opened her eyes. It was dark, she was in her room, and she was alone. She paused and realized she was still in her housecoat. Frowning, she focused on her body for a minute and then blushed and buried her face into the pillow when she realized the dream or whatever it was, had really happened.
Glancing at the clock, she frowned. Where was Dominic that he had to leave again and why was he in danger?
Dom lay there, looking at the ceiling. There was still an hour before they could go outside for yard time. He was looking forward to the cool air to help clear his head. He smirked at the faded ceiling. Images of Jennah filed every molecule of his mind right now. “Palmer?” He turned to look at Slick as he came back into their cell. Something was wrong. Slick always seemed a little cautious, but this time he was downright nervous, almost panicked. He sat up and swung his legs over the edge. “What’s wrong?” Slick glanced down at the floor and then over his shoulder before looking back at him. “I caught up to Dickenson like you said to.” He stuffed his hands in his pockets, and then pulled them back out again. Dom squared his shoulders. “I take it the info wasn’t good?” Slick shook his head. “For a guard, he’s usually pretty cool, you know?&nbs
She smirked at his words, but did as he said. At first, she didn’t see anything and thought she wasn’t doing it right, and then images started to come forward. Images of a tall, chain-link fence, of men wandering around in the cold. The men were dressed in the same dark blue jackets, and many wore the same dark blue hats. Her heartbeat sped up when she recognized the next thing she saw. A guard tower standing high above the tall fence. It was a prison, and if she wasn’t mistaken, it was Wyestate prison. She opened her eyes and the images left all at once. She swallowed. “Are you a guard at Wyestate?” Another long silence. “Jennah...” She shook her head at the pleading way he said her name. She was all too familiar with that pleading tone, and she was not falling for it ever again! “Are you?” “No.” She closed her eyes and tried to fight the crushing
After the way her day off had dragged and tormented her, and yesterday with the storm and no one out doing anything, Jennah was actually happy with the busy chaos of the crazy season. She hadn’t had any time today to stop and think about things, particularly Dominic. If she had too much free time, she knew she would have checked him out in the database, just to see, and that would have been the worst thing she could have done. To know he was an inmate was bad enough, and from what she knew about Wyestate, petty criminals didn’t get sent there. How could she have been so stupid? Not to pick up on the clues? He was evasive, asked her what she did at the station, asked her about Wyestate, and even confessed it had been a long time since he’d been with a woman. Some cop you are, she thought. A man that looked like that could have any woman he wanted so why would he voluntarily abstain? He wouldn’t. So the only possible ans
Sitting down, she set the folder on her legs and took a few deep breaths. She pictured unlocking the door and opening it. “Dom?” She sat there, gripping the bench, and waited. “Dominic?” Nothing but silence answered her. Opening her eyes, and she flipped open the folder again to look at his picture. His hair was longer than she had seen it, but it was definitely him. His eyes were dark and cold, but they’d have to be if he was playing the part. She read his stats a few times, trying to commit them to memory. Turning the pages, she read the reports that followed. She frowned. If she was reading it right, this went back many years. What was someone as young as Dominic doing in on it? She kept reading, and then stopped suddenly and re-read the one paragraph. Suspected in the killing of Officer Palmer... Dom’s father? That would explain why he was neck deep in it. C
Jennah looked in the mirror for the tenth time. She’d chosen something she wouldn’t be ashamed of wearing when she met Dominic, but it was still revealing enough to distract any guards from thinking she was there for anything other than a conjugal visit with her husband. The black skirt was short, but not too tight. She wasn’t that out of character that she would wear something that would show off her little paunch, as she lovingly referred to the extra part of herself that had seemed to start growing around her middle in the last year. She turned sideways and studied her profile, or mostly her stomach. It didn’t appear to be the huge bulge her mind always told her was there even though she knew it wasn’t—mostly. Turning again, she bit her lip and wondered about the red blouse she was wearing. Maybe it was showing a little too much cleavage. She had more than enough of that to spare. Running her hand under her arm, she
Dominic took slow steps toward her, his eyes roving all over her as he did. When he stood right in front of her, his gaze moved to hers. She felt his hands touch her hips, but she couldn’t look away from his eyes. He lowered his head toward her and buried his face in her neck as he pulled her gently into him. “What are you doing here?” he whispered beside her ear. She smiled when the voice she’d missed hearing vibrated right through her. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she nuzzled beside his ear. “Your captain sent me. Your contact has disappeared.” She paused as his breath brushed up against her neck. “They’ve been trying to find a way to get to you,” she whispered as quietly as she could. He lifted his head and the look in his eyes as they swept over her face made her knees weaken. He smiled and gently brushed his lips over hers. “So they sent you?” She smiled against his mouth. “A
She needed no further encouragement and began to slam her body down onto him. Each time their bodies connected, he groaned. His hands held her hips tightly as he picked up the pace and pulled her down onto him. She moaned when he thrust up into her at the same time. Leaning back, she balanced her hands on her heels and dropped her head back so she could move faster. His hand moved to her breasts and kneaded them as she bounced down onto him. She cried out and lost the rhythm as she started to come again. He held onto her hips and forced her to keep moving through it. Moaning, she dropped forward again and tried to catch her breath. He pulled her hair so her face was level with his and kissed her frantically. She wasn’t even sure how he moved without separating them, but she found herself on her back with him still buried deep inside her. “Not done with you yet, babe.” He sucked at her throat. “Won’t ever g
Jennah stopped the car when she knew she was a safe distance from the prison. She got her phone out of the glove box and quickly dialled Captain Wilds’ number. He answered on the second ring. “Captain, its Jennah Best. We have a problem.” “You’ve seen Dom?” She closed her eyes for a second. “Yes. He’s presently recovering from two stab wounds.” “Is he all right?” Her eyes flew open. “No! The inmates and guards, as well, know who he is. He said the warden is the one running all of it.” “The warden?” His voice was louder. “Think about it. Why else would cons and guards go after Dom?” “Son of a bitch!” Now he was getting a clear picture. “You have to get him out.” There was a long silence. “If the warden is in on it, how can we? The original plan was to find the source and then bring the warden in on it...” “Shit!
It took Tess a moment to pull away from Brody’s kiss when she realized she’d brought them to the backyard instead of inside the house. “You had me all distracted and I didn’t focus hard enough.” Putting his arm around her, he pulled her against him and turned them towards the door. “Oh I’d say you were focused on the right thing.” Unzipping the vest, Brody shrugged out of it as soon as they entered the house. Tess kicked off her heels and sighed in relief to be free of them. Before she could turn around he came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, cuddling her against his warm body. “Can I bribe you to wear those shoes again, later?” Tilting her head she closed her eyes as his mouth moved over the side of her neck. “I believe it’s illegal to bribe a police officer.” “Mmm, I’ll take my chances.” “Oh, good you’re back.” Jennah moved slowly into the room. Tes
Brody zipped the vest and pointed at the screen. “Get me to there and I’ll hoof it around get in behind the car.”“Got it.” Grayson announced as he accelerated and went barrelling down into the ditch the second they cleared the road barriers.“Smithy, you’re on scope. Anyone so much as breathes on Tess and you take them down a peg.” He growled into the com.“Won’t take my eyes off her.” The sniper in the group responded.“Colonel and I are in position. His men on are the ship with the containers and surrounding the yard.” Joslee reported. “I got your ass covered, Dom, whenever you’re ready.”Brody grabbed the door handle. “No one fires until Tess is clear.” He knew it didn’t need to be said, but he wasn’t taking any chances with her life.As he hit the ground for the second time tha
Tess couldn’t have turned around and looked behind if she had a chance; she was sandwiched between the Councilman and one of his goons. When the earpiece attached to her earring had gone dead, she could only hope that Brody got her signal. Chewing on the inside of her cheek, she cautiously looked at the man sitting beside her. He hadn’t uttered one word since they’d gotten in the car. The driver kept looking at her in the mirror and she tried to avoid making eye contact with him as well. When the car turned a corner in a rush speed, the councilman’s weight hit her. The only reason they would speed up had to mean they were being followed. She knew Dom well enough to know if he was the one driving there was no way this driver was going to be able to lose him—the man had chased down a perp on foot more than once; in a vehicle he was a demon. All she had to do was hold it together until backup got here.
“The only thing that would be worse than sitting here staring off into space would be if Tess let us listen in on the speeches. What could they possibly take this long to say? We need donations, please open your damn wallets.” Jennah hissed into the mics.Dom chuckled. “Patience doesn’t seem to be your strong point lately, lady.”“Trade you places, husband.”Brody shook his head and glanced at the man beside him to see an idiot’s grin on his face.“If only I could, wife.”“Talk time is winding down,” Joslee informed all.“It’s about time.” Brody muttered to Dom.“Yeah.” Dom turned back towards the building. “All eyes on Tess until we have her.”“Might take a few—the Councilman seems to be leading her all over the place, even holding her arm.”S
“Do you have visual?” Dom turned and looked at Brody, one eyebrow quirked. “You keep asking Smithy that every ten seconds and we’re going to spend all night standing out here.” Lowering the binoculars long enough to send the other man an annoyed look, Brody shrugged. “I’ve only asked twice. There are so many arriving right now; I don’t want to lose her.” “She’s moved a total of twenty steps since she and the Colonel got there Brody, relax.” He knew he was tensing up, but as hard as he tried he couldn’t seem to bring it under control. “I am,” he lied. Dom snorted. “Bullshit! You are so friggin tense my nerves are twitching—back it down a few notches or I’m going to have to send you to sit in the truck.” Taking a deep breath, Brody tried once more to reign in the emotions that were trampling him. He was ready to send himself to the truck for a time out when a voice came over the mic that ha
Brody didn’t take his eyes off Tessa as Jennah mothered him and cleaned and bandaged his shoulder. Tess was chewing her bottom lip as she read over the list of known associates of the guy they’d identified. Of course it turned out to be someone everyone knew or knew of—and taking him down was going to have to be a very precise operation. Getting close enough to the man in charge wasn’t going to be an easy thing to accomplish.Tessa lowered the pages and leaned back in the chair, closing her eyes for a few seconds. It was long enough for him to allow his eyes to travel over her without being caught. When she opened them again, he looked away and met Joslee’s glare. Lifting his eyebrows, he tried to look repentant for tormenting the man that could hear what he was thinking—which at this moment was something he couldn’t wait to be doing to Tess. The Captain came back into the room and glan
Tess tried not to think of how pissed Brody was going to be that she’d tricked him into agreeing to let her near the containers. If Gray’s little contraption worked and jammed up what was inside the container, it would be worth it. Of course the only ones that knew about it were her and Grayson—that wasn’t going to sit well with the others either. She slid along slowly on her belly on top of the cool steel container, trying to keep her body low enough to not be seen.Lifting her head, she spotted the truck coming up fast. All she had to do was somehow get from this trailer to the truck Joslee was driving like a madman. No biggie, how hard could jumping from one moving vehicle to another be? Swallowing she shuffled around so she could come down the back of the container feet first. If her ability worked, it would save a whole lot of stress, but regardless of whatever they’d done to ensure the t
Crouching down, Brody moved a little further over the knoll. “They have both containers loaded up.”Tess watched through the binoculars. “Everyone is gone but the driver of the truck and that jeep parked at the end.”Brody looked over to Joslee. He’d been filling Dom and the others in on what was happening. He shook his head. “They don’t have an ID yet.” Glaring at the truck, he clenched his jaw a few times. “Too bad we can’t get close enough to disable the truck to stall until the Captain gets it together.”Lowering the binoculars she looked at him and then back to the truck. “Tell me what to do and I’ll pop down do it and get back here.”“What if you can’t get back just like that?” He didn’t want to agree with her idea, but a part of him knew it was probably the only chance they had. They
Brody rounded the corner almost running over Tessa. Grabbing her arms, he steadied her. “Where are you running to in a hurry?” Her warm hands rested against his chest, burning him through his shirt.“Grayson called us all to the basement—you didn’t know?”He felt like he was drowning in her soft eyes. “I was working out then hopped in the shower.”“Oh.”It was hard to not do more than hold her arms when her eyes caressed him. When she reached up and brushed his damp hair back from his face, he had to remind his brain of what she had just said. “Why the basement?”Easing her hands slowly down his chest to rest by his waist, she shrugged. “I’m not sure, but he said to leave anything electronic up here.”“Let’s go see what’s up.” Hesitating for a few seconds, he reluctantly
