Chapter 255: Back to Reality

Jackie didn't bother to stop Emma and Grant as they raced squealing toward Blake, who waited just outside the secure area of Terminal 1. Each child wore the personalized Mickey Mouse ears they'd bought with the money their grandparents had given them. They had insisted on a pair for Blake, too, a gift Jackie couldn't wait to see her burly, six-foot-six brother wearing.

"Here, Uncle Blake, we got some for you, too!" Emma sang.

He smiled at the black hat emblazoned with his name in yellow. "Wow, thanks!"

"Put them on, Uncle Blake!" Grant insisted.

"Yeah, put them on, Uncle Blake," Jackie laughed as she caught up with the children.

She hugged her brother tightly.

"Welcome home, sis."

The children chattered eagerly throughout the time they waited for their bags and all the way out to the Suburban. But after only fifteen minutes of driving, they both crashed and burned. Blake and Jackie absorbed the quiet for a while.

Finally, Jackie looked at Blake, unab

Chapter 256: TrespassersA warm mug of coffee in hand, Jackie quietly let herself out the kitchen door and onto the wide deck overlooking the lake. The deck stretched across the entire western side of the lodge, affording a great place to enjoy glorious sunsets. But early in the morning, before anyone else woke up, was her favorite time of day. The sky was just beginning to lighten, rendering the trees merely shadows against one another, and a low fog hung over the lake, creating an eerie effect on the water. Somewhere down the way, a loon called, adding to the lonely ambiance. Leaning a hip against the railing, Jackie smiled to herself. Vacation had been great, but in truth, she'd missed home. She sipped her steaming coffee and gazed down the shoreline in the direction of her brother's cabin at the opposite end of the property. Between where she was in the main lodge and Blake's place, a dozen small cabins dotted the property, all blissfully vacant right now. Normally she'd be

Chapter 257: The Rusty HatchetOn the drive from Crossroads to Manitoulin, Scott reflected on the past two weeks. Finishing up his time at the camp had been bittersweet. He'd made lifelong friends, and on most days, he knew his work there made a difference. But as he drove his red 1958 Ford F-150 down the narrow two-lane road through the northern Ontario wilderness, he felt an irrepressible sense of excitement at the prospect of the next chapter of his life.In Manitoulin, he drove straight to the Rusty Hatchet Pub, parking in the small lot, and making his way into the bar."Scott, my boy," called a familiar smoky voice. As Scott's eyes adjusted to the murky interior, a stark contrast to the brilliant sun outside, he spotted his friend Eustace Farmer."Eustace! How's it going, my brother?" The fact that Eustace was in his late eighties had never fazed Scott. He made friends wherever he went and was always happy to meet someone with a story.Eustace had worked as a miner in his muc

Chapter 258: Protective Mama BearAfter Blake left for town, Jackie called the kids inside, with promises they could return to their minnow hunt later.Together, Jackie and Amy spent some time inventorying bed linens for the various cabins. As they worked, Amy described the day she'd gone with Blake to help set up one of the remote guest cabins. Having grown up in the spotlight, she had precious little experience with such a mundane domestic task as making beds and had struggled hilariously to get the job completed. The pair laughed amiably as they completed the inventory.Ready for a break, Jackie called the children to go back outside while she and Amy sank onto a pair of deck chairs overlooking the lake."I have so many ideas for this place," Jackie said, stirring artificial sweetener into her iced tea.Amy sipped her tea just as it was, then set her glass on the small table between them."I can't imagine what it was like to grow up here," she said. "It's such a legacy for you a

Chapter 259: Comparing RidesWith no small amount of pleasure, Scott showed off his new baby to Blake. The fact that it was similar to Blake's own plane tethered on the other side of the dock did nothing to dampen his enthusiasm."So, I took the plunge," Scott explained. He and Blake had gone over every inch of the De Havilland Beaver. It was like Blake's, but older. And it had been lovingly maintained by Eustace for years. "In my off-time, I got my license. Then one night, I struck up a conversation with this old guy in a bar in Manitoulin. And he says he's got this Beaver he can't fly these days. His vision has gotten too bad. He offers to sell it to me.""It's a beauty, man. He must have really babied it."Scott grinned proudly and swiped at a spot on the side of the fuselage. "Yeah."He sighed, gazing off into the distance. "I can't do it anymore, bro. I'm burned out, dealing with the same punks, day in, day out. I've lost the passion for it."He turned back to Blake

Chapter 260: Adult TimeHalf an hour later, Jackie and Scott sat in companionable silence on the back deck of the lodge. The full moon reflected in the ripples that the gentle summer breeze stirred on the lake. Jackie sipped her Merlot and fixed her gaze on the end of the dock. "Again, I'm sorry about the less-than-welcoming reception I gave you when you first arrived. Those guys who are after Amy have me on edge. But that's no excuse.""No apology necessary. I understand." He looked at her, grinning. "You were ready to take my head off. I was impressed. You're a bold, strong lady.""I don't know about that." She swirled the wine in her glass, embarrassed."I do." Jackie met his intense gaze. "Well, it's nice of you to say.""So, tell me about running a lodge on the lake." He leaned back in his lounge chair and watched her expectantly.Jackie shrugged slightly. "It's my life. Blake and I grew up here, you know. I moved away for a while, but I think I always knew I'd

Chapter 261: If You Break Her Heart, I'll Have to Kick Your AssThe following morning, Scott was up early, enjoying a breakfast of steel-cut oatmeal and fresh blueberries in the tiny kitchenette of his cabin. After breakfast, Blake stopped by, and the two men headed across the lake to the island to see to the damaged cabin. In the boat, Blake had placed the tools they'd need, plus the new window he'd picked up in town the previous day. Arriving at the small dock across from the lodge, the pair carried everything to the cabin situated at the crest of the island."So, my brother, you look like one exceptionally satisfied man," Scott smirked knowingly at Blake as, together, they lifted the new window into place. "Everything went well last night, I take it."Blake's face lit up in a huge grin. "Very well. Amy loved the collar, knew exactly what it meant." He shook his head as he gazed out across the water. "She's the one, I feel it in my soul. I know it's crazy; she's a movie star

Chapter 262: An Apology and an InvitationJackie inhaled deeply, adoring the scent of the sun-warmed pine needles that carpeted the ground. This was absolutely her favorite kind of summer day, with the sky a deep cerulean, dotted with the occasional fluffy white cloud. The temperature was perfect, and a light breeze ruffled her dark hair. She looked to Scott who walked beside her as they made their way down the lake's shoreline. He grinned down at her. "It's a gorgeous day, isn't it?"Jackie nodded. "It is. A day like this makes the cold winter ones worthwhile," she laughed lightly."Jackie, I wanted to talk to you for a minute." Scott stopped walking, motioning to a huge tree trunk that rested at the edge of the water, a casualty of a huge storm several summers ago.Stomach clenched in anticipation of what he might say, Jackie parked herself on the log, clasping her hands in her lap. Rather than sitting, Scott stood facing her."I had a conversation with Blake this morning, an

Chapter 263: A Proper DateAt 5:00, Scott climbed the steps to the lodge's back deck and knocked on the kitchen door. Small pounding feet preceded the moment Grant opened the door."Hi, Mr. Scott!""Hi, there, young Jedi," he grinned."We're gonna have popcorn and watch a movie before bedtime," the boy told him. "Uncle Blake said so."Scott nodded. "Well, if your Uncle Blake said so, I believe it."Blake entered the kitchen, Emma giggling as she rode on his shoulders. Blake scanned Scott from head to toe. He'd pulled his hair into a knot at the back of his head. His light blue button-down topped dark skinny jeans, and he'd opted for tan suede boots.Scott pursed his lips wryly. "Do I look good enough to be seen with your sister?""She'll be the judge of that," Blake quipped, "but I'd go out with you."A moment later, Amy came downstairs. "Ooh, Scott, you look nice." Scott gave Blake a look. "Jackie will be down in just a minute."They heard footsteps on the wooden stairs. "N

He was ready for this long night to be over.He felt her starting to squeeze his hand again. "You've got this, babe," he murmured, kissing her forehead.Eyes closed and teeth clenched, she bore down, releasing a grunting squeal with the effort."Stop! There we are, Mom. The head is out. Now don't push, just breathe for a moment."Still holding her hand, he leaned over to see the back of the baby's head. His heart was in his throat and tears streamed down his face."Now this is it. On the next contraction, go ahead and push."He turned back to her. Eyes wide, she panted, gripping his hand for dear life."Oh, God, here it comes," she cried."You're doing great, I'm so proud of you," he murmured, turning to watch as their child was born.Fifteen minutes later, he strode down the hospital corridor to the family waiting

Chapter 327: No Time Like the Present"You should go home and get some rest, Jackie."Without taking her eyes off Scott, asleep in his hospital bed, she reached for Blake's hand. "I can't. I need to be here when he wakes up.""You're sure?"She nodded, then looked to her brother. "Can you take care of the kids? I hate to impose, but…""No worries, Jackie. Now that the storm's over, we'll take them back to our house. Amy's more comfortable there, anyway. We'll have a sleepover party."Jackie sighed. "I know they're ready to be back in their own beds. But I'll be home tomorrow, for sure, at least overnight.""Okay, sis." He kissed Jackie on the cheek. "Keep us posted."In the quiet of the hospital room, Jackie pulled a chair beside Scott's bed. As soon as they'd arrived back at the lodge, Blake and some of the others had carried Scott to the battered Suburban, laying him on the back seat.At Amy's insistence, Blake had driven Jackie and Scott to town. Chapter 326: Dream Versus RealityHe was staring up at an azure sky. A warm summer breeze caressed his face. He turned his head and Jackie smiled at him, her deep blue eyes sparkling. "Where were you?" she asked.Scott shrugged. "I don't know.""Well, you're back now. That's what counts." She took his hand and led him to a bed in the middle of a sun-drenched field full of flowers. The bed's sheer white canopy billowed in the breeze. Kissing his hand, she released it, reaching up to slide first one, then the other spaghetti strap of her filmy white dress, allowing it to slide down her body and pool at her bare feet. His gaze slid from her sapphire eyes to her succulent lips. Then it traveled over the firm globes of her breasts with their pert pink nipples, to the flair of her hips, to the junction between her thighs where tight black curls were neatly trimmed. When he met her eyes again, she smiled knowingly and sank to her knees, bowing her head and resting her hands palm

You can't leave Amy. I'd never even ask. And if Ned Hart won't go out there, I have no other choice." Her voice was deadly calm. She grabbed her grey coat, then put it back on its hook, heading into the dining room. Blake followed. "Jackie, seriously, I don't want you going out there." He grabbed her hand, stopping her. "Scott wouldn't want you going out there.""He can tell me that when I find him. Can I borrow Amy's pink parka? It's brighter than mine, easier to see."Blake exhaled sharply, his tone resigned. "I've known you long enough to know that once you've set your mind on something, that's it. At least let me put together a pack for you."While Blake scavenged from the survival students, Jackie put on Amy's parka and spoke to Grant and Emma. "I'm going out to let Scott know

Chapter 324: From Bad to WorseAway from the wide-open expanse of the lake, the trees blocked a certain amount of the wind, but plenty of snow filtered down. Try as he might, Scott couldn't make out any tracks left by Pierce. He continued up the trail, slipping and sliding as he made his way up a steep ridge. The designated campsite was the clearing at the top, but once he arrived, the area was empty. Even the snow was thin, having been blown into drifts against the bases of the trees surrounding the clearing. Where are you, you little shit? Scott turned in a circle, considering the most likely way Pierce might have gone. The clearing was exposed. He'd have wanted to find a spot that afforded more shelter. Which meant he would have gone lower. But in which direction?Rolling the dice, Scott headed west, where the clearing dropped off in a bluff about thirty meters above a ravine created by a now-frozen creek. He peered down into the gully, willing Pierce not to be there at

Chapter 323: Who's Missing? An hour later, Scott sipped his coffee and gazed out over the room. A handful of his campers had volunteered to help with lunch, and they'd all enjoyed potato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. Now, a group of guests was working on chili for dinner.Out of habit, he mentally counted his group. Tom and Patty Payton, who'd headed up lunch, were playing cards with Justin Sapp and Paula Martinez. Dan Spinelli was talking fishing with the father and sons from Cherub Lake. Not finding Pierce, Adams, or Bennet, he frowned slightly. A trip to the restaurant kitchen revealed Brian Bennett and Keely Adams working on cornbread to go with the chili. That leaves one. Scott returned to the dining room. Jackie was across the room checking on Amy. He cruised by the table where Dan was swapping fish stories. "Sorry to interrupt, but have you seen Pierce?"The younger man frowned. "Not since we ate. But you know, now that you mention it, his backpack is gone." H

Chapter 322: Everyone Shelter at the LodgeAs Jackie and the children hiked toward the main lodge, they heard the snowmobile returning from the island. Jackie sent Emma and Grant ahead with their backpacks, Max galumphing along behind them, while she waited for Scott to secure the snowmobile."How'd it go?"Scott's lips were a grim line. "About how you'd expect. There's nothing we can do about it with the storm coming. Everybody understood, really. Except for Pierce. He's such an asswipe."Jackie's eyes widened but her lips curled impishly. "Oh my, Sire. Language."He popped her ass lightly. "And now my Princess requests a spanking. My day is complete."They both laughed as the entered the lodge. Trina had a huge fire going in the dining room's fireplace, and she'd already been to the cabins to invite guests to gather in the main lodge, where there would be food and heat."Hi, guys," she greeted Jackie and Scott. "I called the crew to let them know to stay home today. Then

She pushed up on an elbow and rested her head against his shoulder. He shook his head derisively. "The blizzard. They're predicting the storm to hit by this afternoon.""I thought it was supposed to skirt us to the south.""I hoped it would. But now we're under a blizzard warning." He kissed her temple and slid out of bed."What are you going to do?"He stepped into a pair of fleece-lined jeans and shrugged into a grey thermal Henley. At the bunkhouse cabin, he'd just welcomed Tom and Patty Payton, the only married couple he'd had thus far in his wilderness school.Having checked in with Jackie in the reception area of the lodge, the pair had made their way on foot across the ice to the island where they joined fellow survival students Justin Sapp, a stocky young man with an infectious sense of humor, and Paula Martinez, an attractive thirty-something Latina who wrote a Spanish-language adventure blog.Everyone in this session had broad outdoor survival experience, including the Paytons, who had once spent a year in the Amazon cataloging wildlife. They'd told Scott they were excited to learn winter survival skills in the wilderness of Ontario. That leaves four more clients yet to arrive, Scott mused as he pulled up the slope to park beneath the lodg
