Its her life which is altered in a way, that she couldn't mend it back to what it used to be.
Tears of regret and all the lost happiness, fell down her cheeks.
It's still middle of the night, but she couldn't seem to be getting any sleep. Her heart is heavy and her mind is in turmoil. She stood up and looked at her thin night gown, which reaches her knees.
Apparently it's not good to let anyone see your legs in Fairy. It is considered appropriate to cover till your ankles.
Doris and Elvina told her time and again, not to come out in her night gown. Because that would make Scott angry. He wants his daughter to be appropriate all the time, and he wouldn't like if even their servants look at her in her night gown, as they are tend to gossip.
