Chapter 8

Author: Master Pleasure
In the evening, at the school gates.

"Jake, I was wrong today. Please don't be mad, okay?" said Helen, her eyes red and full of helplessness, as she grabbed Jake's arm.

After they left the Phantom family, Jake’s face was still dark. Even though he was taking her back to school, he didn't say a word during the whole ride.

Jake pulled his arm away from her, his face expressionless as he said, "Helen, let's break up. Don't show up in front of me again."

With his words, tears instantly fell from Helen's eyes.

She trembled as she asked, "W-why?"

Jake sneered. "Who do you think you are? How dare you frame Emily?"

Helen froze.

Jake was breaking up with her because of Emily?

Didn't he hate Emily?

Jake didn't pay attention to her. When he got back into the car, he immediately drove off.

While driving, he made a phone call.

"Campbell, get the others and let's grab a drink."

Campbell chuckled, teasing, "Aren't you just taking your little girlfriend back? How come you still have the mood to drink?"

Jake frowned slightly. "Are you going or not? If not, forget it."

"Of course, since Jake said so, we have to go."

Half an hour later, Jake arrived at the private room.

Campbell looked surprised as he saw Jake walk in alone. "Huh? Where's your girlfriend?"

"Bored of her."

Jake walked inside.

Campbell paused for a moment.

"Bored of her? How long has it been?"

The other friends started joking when they heard Jake's words.

"He’s used to having Emily around all the time."

Jake leaned back on the sofa in frustration and lit a cigarette, biting it in his mouth.

Campbell looked at him with a complicated expression.

He couldn't understand. Jake obviously cared about Emily, yet he kept hurting her again and again.

Even if Emily liked him so much, she couldn't bear this kind of treatment.

Campbell sat next to him and cautiously suggested, "Jake, why don't you call Emily?"

Jake shook his head and said in a lazy voice, "What do I need to call her for?"

Campbell paused for a moment and then made a thumbs-up gesture. "I’ll give you a thumbs up, man. You’re doing the right thing by not looking back. Otherwise, Emily will think she has you."

Jake said stubbornly, "What's there to turn back for? Is she a fairy? Why should I turn back?"

Though he said that, his gaze still fell on the phone sitting on the table.

As Jake's university roommate and friend, Campbell knew exactly what he was thinking.

A typical stubborn guy.

He grabbed Jake's phone.

Jake frowned. "What are you doing with my phone?"

"Calling Emily to come over."

Jake frowned more, clearly displeased. "Call her over for what? Just looking at her annoys me."

Though he said that, he didn't stop Campbell's action.

Campbell found Emily's number in the contacts and dialed it.

The phone rang once, then a mechanical female voice came from the other side. "Sorry, the number you dialed is busy. Please try again later."

Campbell was stunned. "Huh? Why can't I get through? Did she block you?"

Jake's expression darkened immediately when he heard that. He snatched his phone back.

Looking at the rejected call, he said coldly, "Who the hell told you to touch my phone?"

Campbell was taken aback. "No, man, I'm just doing it for your own good."

"For my own good? So, contacting Emily is for my good? Don't you know I can't stand her?"

Campbell was silent.

"Fine, just let it be. But don't regret it."

Seeing Campbell silent, Jake suddenly lost his temper. He slammed the wine glass he was holding to the ground.

"Listen up, from now on, anyone who contacts Emily will no longer be my friend."

There was a loud crash.

Glass shards flew everywhere, some even landing on Jake's face, cutting him, but he seemed to not feel it.

The room fell silent instantly. No one dared to say a word.

Jake sneered, "What? Are you all deaf?"

Everyone nodded and agreed, "Yes, yes, we heard you."

Jake stood up in frustration, grabbed his coat, and stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

Someone leaned over to Campbell and asked, "Campbell, what's the deal with Jake and Emily? What kind of grudge do they have?"

Campbell shrugged. "Who knows?"

"Actually, Emily's not bad. She's pretty, has a good figure, a great temperament, and, most importantly, she likes Jake. What a pity..."

Campbell didn't respond, and the person continued, "We've all seen what Emily's done these past few years, right? I remember once when Jake was hurt, just a small wound, and Emily was so heartbroken."

"Yeah, I remember. Once, Jake got drunk, and Emily took care of him the whole night."

"If I had such a beautiful and caring girlfriend, I'd be happy."

Jake stood by the door, hearing their conversation, and his irritation grew.

They were all giving useless comments.

‘I broke up with her, and now you guys are saying she's good.’

Jake sat in the car, still feeling incredibly frustrated.

It had been a week.

Emily didn't contact him at all and even blocked him.

She had grown some guts.

He wanted to see how long Emily could bear it.

When the time came, she would come begging him, but he definitely wouldn't be soft-hearted. He would teach her a lesson.

Jake drove home, and when he saw his mother sitting in the living room, he stopped in his tracks.

"Mom."

Linda glanced at him indifferently and said, "That Helen girl, I don't approve of her."

Jake sneered sarcastically. "You don't approve of anyone I like."

Linda's expression darkened instantly. "Isn't this for your own good?"

Jake spoke in a mocking tone, "Yeah, that's why I broke up with her, are you happy now? Every woman I like, you disapprove of. I'm not an emperor, and you're not an empress dowager."

Linda said coldly, "I think you've drunk too much. Joanne, bring Jake something to help him sober up."

"I didn't drink too much."

Linda seemed to not hear him, continuing, "I told you about the blind date before. I've arranged it. You're meeting tomorrow."

Jake's frustration boiled over at the mention of the blind date.

He lifted his foot and kicked a vase by the elevator door.

"In high school, you wanted me to join the company. Fine, I listened to you. I majored in finance in university. Now I've graduated and joined the company, you want me to enter politics, and told me to be careful with my words. You told me to break up, I did it. Now you want me to go on a blind date, I'll go. But I'm a person, not your property."

Jake literally shouted the final sentence.

Linda was startled by his outburst, but with decades of noblewoman's composure, she maintained her elegant demeanor.

"What’s wrong with being connected to the Freeman family? What? Are you still thinking about that gold-digger, Emily?"

Jake pursed his lips and didn't speak.

Linda continued, "Don't forget why Emily stayed by your side."

Jake shouted, "Wasn't it for the money? I have plenty of it."

After that, he went straight into the elevator.

Jake lay in bed, feeling terribly uncomfortable.

The wound on his eyelid also stung.

"Emily, my stomach hurts," Jake mumbled to himself, pressing on his aching stomach.

He had no idea what got over him, but he dialed Emily’s number.

The familiar electronic sound partially woke him up.Emily had blocked him.How could she? What should he do?Knock, knock, knock...There was a knocking sound at the door, followed by the servant's voice."Sir, Mrs. Phantom asked me to bring you something to help you sober up."Jake was extremely irritated and shouted at the door, "Get lost!"The servant looked at Linda awkwardly.Linda reached out and took the water. "Give it to me, you go rest, it's late."She walked in with the water and pushed open the door.Looking at Jake lying on the bed in his clothes, she started lecturing."Get up, wash up and then sleep. You look a mess."Jake mocked, "Yes, you want a well-behaved, elegant puppet, not me."Linda sighed, seeing her son in pain. Her tone softened."Drink this first, or you'll feel worse."Jake reluctantly sat up and took the glass from his mother's hand. When he brought it to his mouth, Linda's voice came again."Jake, do you know why affluent families have

"Emily, you're here! Come sit down."Liam greeted warmly and even stood up to pull the chair for Emily.Emily was stunned for a moment, then sat down on the chair, softly saying, "Thank you."Liam smiled and reached out to ruffle her hair. "No need to thank me. Don't be so formal."As soon as he finished speaking, Liam felt a cold and piercing gaze fixed on him.He turned his head and met Luke's gaze, which was full of icy hostility.Liam couldn't help but shiver, awkwardly retracting his hand and sitting back down in his seat.Emily handed the bag she was holding to Liam. "Mr. Smith, thank you for last night."Liam glanced at Luke from the corner of his eye, then reached out to take the bag. "What's there to thank for? As your friend, it's the right thing to do."He stood up suddenly. "Uh, I need to go to the restroom, it’s an emergency."Before Emily could react, Liam had already left. The atmosphere in the private room became awkward.Emily stood up. "Well, the jacket is

Jake followed them with a dark face and grabbed Emily's arm."Emily, did I tell you to leave?"Emily furrowed her brows in displeasure and shook his hand off. "Let go."Jake sneered. "What? Are you afraid your new boyfriend will see? Emily, do you know who that is before you throw yourself at him? Do you think Mr. Smith is as foolish as me and be fooled by you?"Emily glanced at him, her face showing no extra emotion as she said indifferently, "What does it have to do with you?""How does it not? I am your ex-boyfriend after all."Emily didn't expect Jake to have such thick skin, to still say something like "ex-boyfriend."She couldn't help but laugh."Ex-boyfriend? When were you ever my ex?"Jake froze for a moment, recalling the things he had said to Emily earlier in the private room.He felt a little guilty, but it was only for a moment."Emily, Mr. Smith is not someone you can afford to offend, stop making trouble."Emily quietly looked at him.It was strange, she used

The next moment, she heard the excited voice of a young boy."Mom, next time I want a limited edition, it's not expensive, just over 200 thousand dollars."It was her younger brother, Alan Sanders.Mandy responded indulgently, "Okay, if you like it, I'll buy it for you.""Thank you, Mom! I knew you’re the best.""You're my son. Everything I have is yours. If I don't treat you well, who else would I treat well?""Mom, I love you."Alan clung to Mandy's arm, starting to act coquettishly.Emily quietly observed the interaction between the mother and son, feeling no surprise. From childhood to now, Mandy had been very kind to her, so much so that Emily once thought her mother favored her over her brother, and she often stood up for her brother. That was until their father had an accident, and all the family matters, including the company, fell onto Mandy's shoulders. After that, Mandy became distant towards her, and now it seemed that the so-called favoring her over her brother

Emily's body stiffened, she planned to act as if she hadn't heard. The old lady reached out and pushed her playfully, winking at Emily. "You haven't seen Luke for so many years, go talk to him and give him a hand."Emily couldn't possibly not understand what the old lady was doing, and she couldn’t just pretend she didn’t hear what Luke said. She braced herself and walked towards the kitchen."Do, do you need me to do something?" Emily stammered, not daring to look Luke in the eyes as she spoke.Luke chuckled but didn't say anything.Emily raised her eyes and met his gaze. "What are you laughing at?"Luke shook his head, then walked in front of Emily. The next moment, a cool minty scent surrounded her. Emily instinctively took a step back."Are you that afraid of me?" asked Luke.Emily awkwardly shook her head. She wasn't scared, but she hadn't yet figured out how to face Luke.Luke extended his arm. "The sleeves, help me adjust them."Emily nodded awkwardly and slowly rea

"Emily Sanders, don't you have anything you want to ask?"Emily paused for a moment.‘What does he want me to ask about? Ask him why he promised to wait until she grew up but went back on his word? Ask him why he went abroad? Ask him why he got married? Ask him why he lied to her?’But the brave and passionate Emily had long been worn down by the years that had passed.Emily struggled, wanting to pull her hand back. "Let go of me."Luke looked at her with a look of resistance and sighed helplessly. He was too impatient. He released her wrist and his gaze fell on her finger, wrapped with a band-aid."Does your hand still hurt?"Emily lowered her eyes and looked at her finger. The band-aid had a SpongeBob design, clearly made for children. For a moment, Emily felt her heart ached and didn't want to answer Luke’s question."Emily." Luke reached out and rubbed her fluffy hair, his tone carrying a little helplessness. "I’m talking to you. Where are your manners, kid?"Emily was

"If you’re not bothering him, then why hasn't he come to find me? It must be because you spoke ill of me to him."Emily looked at the 19-year-old girl in front of her and suddenly thought she was not only naive but also foolish."Do you know Jake?" asked Emily.Helen froze for a moment, then spoke with a stiff neck. "He's my boyfriend, of course I know him."Emily shook her head and smiled.Helen's expression froze. 'What's so funny?'"Jake hasn't come to find you because he's tired of you. The girls who were around him before never lasted more than a week. But you're not bad, at least it took him two weeks to get annoyed."As Emily spoke, Helen's expression became increasingly unpleasant."You're talking nonsense! When Jake pursued me, he said he would marry me. Don't try to sow discord."Emily smiled and said with certainty, "Jake won't marry you. Don't waste your time on him. He's not worth it."Without waiting for Helen to say anything, she opened the door and entered her

For the next two days, Emily was out looking at houses, planning to move out of the school once she found a suitable one.Suddenly, her phone rang inside her bag. She gestured to the young agent and walked to the side to answer the call."Hello."As soon as she spoke, a familiar low chuckle came from the other end."Emily, do you remember me?"Emily tightened her grip on the phone. How could she forget?Wendy had mentioned him before."Yes, Zack."Zack chuckled on the other end, his tone casual. "I thought you had forgotten about me, old friend."Emily shook her head. "No, how could I?""Then let's meet tomorrow. It's been two or three years since we last saw each other, right?"Emily declined. "Sorry, I'm quite busy lately."Zack and Jake were childhood friends, and neither of them were good people. The incident from back then had caused a huge stir. After Zack was sent abroad by his parents, his mother even had a private talk with Emily.Zack's mother and Linda were old

"So, Wendy, what brings you here? Could it be that you're here to get back together with me? I'm so sorry, but we've already broken up. By the way, you look really ugly right now." Gary's voice was filled with mockery and disdain.Wendy's body trembled with anger and her face was pale. She had never been so mad at a man in her life. She took a deep breath in an attempt to calm herself down, but her heart was still pounding quicker and quicker. It was as if her heart was going to explode.Wendy closed her eyes as she forced herself to remain calm. When she opened them again, her eyes looked completely calm."Yes, you're right. We've already broken up." Wendy's voice was cold and firm. She sounded like she didn't care.Gary was a little taken aback. He didn't expect Wendy to admit so easily that they had broken up.He thought Wendy would continue to make a fuss or beg him to get back together with her. After all, Wendy was the person who pursued him to begin with. However, only

Emily yelled, "Wendy, where are you going?"Wendy was hurriedly putting on her shoes. She gritted her teeth and replied, "Going to find that heartless scumbag and settle things."Emily, hearing this, quickly stretched out her arms to block her. "It's pitch dark outside, and you've just been discharged from the hospital. Your leg is still not fully healed—why are you going to find him?"Wendy paused as if suddenly realizing something. "You are right. My leg hasn't recovered yet."With that, her gaze intensified, falling on Emily."Emily, you should come with me! You'll beat him up for me when we get there."Emily looked at her helplessly, "Wendy, don't be so impulsive! We can talk this through calmly."Wendy widened her eyes in anger, grumbling, "No way! That guy is a jerk, I must go and settle the score with him!"Emily quickly tried to calm her down. "Alright, alright, let's just calm down first."Wendy was unamused. "Calm down my ass. "Then why haven't you broken up yet?""I’m waiting for the right opportunity?"Emily paused. "Has the opportunity come now?"Wendy nodded. "It should be coming soon."Just as she finished speaking, Wendy's phone rang. She picked up the phone and saw a new message notification flashing on the screen. She gently tapped the screen, and a conversation window popped up showing a breakup message from Gary. Her brows slightly furrowed, but the corner of her mouth lifted into a barely noticeable smile as she said softly, "And here it is."Then, she handed the phone to Emily, who was sitting beside her, and smiled. "Take a look, he’s a true scumbag. Says he has no feelings anymore."Emily took the phone, glanced at the message, and a hint of disgust appeared on her face as she said, "I didn't have a good impression of him that day either."Wendy looked at Emily curiously and asked, "What happened?"Emily then told Wendy exactly what had happened that day. When Wendy heard it, she imm

The day Wendy was discharged from the hospital, it was Emily who went to the hospital to help her with the discharge paperwork. As for her little boyfriend, Wendy said they had fought again and he had started playing hide-and-seek.Emily was a little speechless but didn't say anything. After leaving the hospital, Wendy suggested going shopping to help her buy some daily necessities. The two of them went directly to the supermarket. After buying what they needed, they took a taxi to Emily's small apartment.Wendy sat in the living room, surveying the room's environment. Looking at Emily who was washing vegetables in the kitchen, she said, "Emily, your place is too cramped. There’s no space to move around if there are two nore people in here."Emily responded while washing the vegetables, "I think it's quite nice. Besides, it's close to several companies I applied to.""You've started looking for a job?"Emily nodded. "Yes, but I haven't found one yet."As soon as she finished s

Emily found herself both amused and helpless. Half-joking, she said, "I guess I'll have to keep my distance from you from now on.""You don't need to.""I'm afraid you'll get triggered and punch me."Luke immediately became displeased. "Emily, are you asking for trouble?"Emily chuckled. "You see..."Luke remained silent for several seconds before saying, "Don't worry. I won't punch you."Emily paused but didn't respond.Luke continued, "Now that you know all my embarrassing stories, shouldn't you tell me some of yours in return?"Emily was slightly stunned. "Me?"Luke responded, waiting for Emily to continue.Emily opened her mouth, "I don't have anything to say.""I've shared my story with you. Are you not going to share? Isn't that a little inappropriate?"Emily was a little speechless. "You're the one who wanted to tell the story, not me..."Before she could finish, Luke interrupted, "Who said I wanted to listen? I'm just curious."Emily muttered under her breath, "Wh

Emily lowered her eyes, fell silent for a moment, then quickly denied, "No, it's just that I misunderstood."There was a slight pause on the other end, and his tone became heavier. "Then which of my actions made you come to that misunderstanding?"Emily felt a wave of embarrassment, staying silent for a while, then explained in a soft voice, "The last time at Jake's house, I overheard what Liam said, that's why I misunderstood.""Is there another reason?""Also, when you helped me put on the band-aid at your grandmother's house."As she spoke, Emily's voice grew softer, almost like the hum of a mosquito.Luke suddenly chuckled.Emily felt both embarrassed and angry, clutching the phone tightly, secretly annoyed in her heart. She didn't need to think to know that the man on the other end was probably mocking her stupidity and childishness."Well, Emily, you really are..."Before Luke could finish his sentence, Emily impatiently interrupted/ "Okay, no need to say more, I unders

Emily carefully looked at the address on the package, it was indeed hers, and the name was also hers. She gently opened the bag, and the aroma of beef and tomatoes filled her nose.Suddenly, her phone on the table vibrated. Feeling a little suspicious, Emily walked over and picked it up.It was a call from Luke. She froze for a moment before pressing the answer button. "Hello?"As soon as she spoke, a deep, magnetic voice from the other end of the line came through. "Did you get it?"Emily, still in a daze, replied in confusion, "What?""I knew you'd get so caught up in things that you'd forget to eat, so I ordered takeaway for you."Only then did Emily realize what Luke was talking about. "So it was you who ordered it?""Yeah, surprised?""How did you know the address?""I helped you move, of course I knew."Emily hadn't expected that he had specifically asked for her full address. She tightened her grip on the phone, her heart suddenly racing uncontrollably. She tried to

Emily was a little surprised, as if she had heard something unbelievable. "Are you guys going to help me move my luggage to my house?""What else?"Emily awkwardly smiled and quickly led them towards the elevator. She rented a place on the 19th floor. Although the environment downstairs was a bit shabby, the apartment inside was filled with a warm atmosphere. The simple one-bedroom apartment felt like a cozy little nest, just the right size to contain her dreams and hopes. However, for the two men who were both over 5.9 feet in height, the space in here was a bit small. Just by standing in the living room, even Emily felt a little crowded, as if the room was struggling to breathe."Emily, your place is too small,""I live alone, it's not small.""Well, it'll be inconvenient for me to visit in the future."Emily's lips twitched. She thought to herself, ‘I don’t think I’ve ever invited you.’With that, she turned to look at Luke.Since entering, Luke had said nothing, wanderin

Helen choked on her words, her voice intermittent. "I... I don't want money."Liam spoke without mercy. "You don't want money? Do you want to get beaten again? Be smart. Take the money and go to a hospital."After that, he left one of his business cards and sternly warned her. "If you don't have enough money, contact me. And by the way, I'll remind you, my friend's temper is like a ticking time bomb, ready to explode. Don't mess with him."Upon hearing this, Helen nervously raised her eyes to look at Luke. When their eyes met and she saw the cold, murderous look in his gaze, she recoiled, like a frightened rabbit, and began to sob softly.Liam shook his head helplessly and walked in front of Luke, trying to persuade him earnestly. "Luke, why are you so impulsive?"Luke's face remained as dark as ever. He said nothing, took off his expensive jacket, and threw it into the nearby bin as if it were garbage. He then strode toward the car park.Liam glanced at the discarded jacket wit
