Chapter 5: The wife and Mistress

ALEXA'S POV

I don't know when I fell asleep and had a fever. For the first half of the night, I kept dreaming about when I met Daniel until now.

I dreamt about how he changed just a few months after our marriage and how insecure his actions were making me feel until I found out I had cancer. He changed for a while, but it didn't last long. He was always busy making me suspicious, until I finally hired a private investigator.

The scenes kept changing and replaying over and over again until they stuck on the day Daniel proposed to me. Daniel's eyes were gentle as he held my hands, going down on one knee.

“Alexa, I know you don't believe in marriage. I know you're already okay with what we have without putting a label on it, but I really can't help it. I want you all to myself. I want to be the one who loves and pampers you. Even if you have an identical twin, I only want you in my life. Please say yes.”

I dreamt about the hesitation I felt at the time, but after seeing that all the people I had known were not always there when I needed them, I yearned to have someone who would always be a constant person by my side, a life companion, in happiness and in sadness, and Daniel had given me enough reasons to believe in commitment and not getting hurt. I opened my mouth to say yes, but what came out of my lips was

“I will agree on one condition." Daniel looked at me with an understanding gaze,

“Tell me, dear, I will do anything for you.” Kissing my fingers and knuckles

“In case... just in case you feel differently about me from what you are feeling today, tell me.” I paused and added,

“I would let you go and give you your freedom." Daniel stood up and placed a finger on my lips, a frown on his face.

“Shhhh, don't ever say such things. I promise you, I'll never feel differently about you. Ever! What you said will never happen. So does that mean you agree?. He asked, his face looking nervous. I nodded shyly, and he slipped a ring on my finger, and after that, we shared a passionate kiss.

And then I dreamt of his fierce eyes staring at me as he plunged his cock into me roughly. I sat up abruptly, hugging the blanket, my breath heavy and my body covered in sweat. I looked at the time and saw it was about 3 a.m., took some medication for my fever, and went back to bed, but sleep never came.

My alarm went off, and I got off the bed and went to the bathroom to freshen up. I stared at my reflection in the mirror and saw how I was looking pale with dark circles under my eyes. I began to smile at my reflection, but it looked hideous in my eyes. When did I let go of myself and come to this point? I will not let what happened defeat me. If I was able to bring Jones Corp. from the top 50 companies in Millennium City to the top 10, then not even Daniel can control me. I won't be disrespected and mistreated in my own home.

I got ready for the office by putting on makeup to conceal the dark circles under my eyes, wearing a formal suit, tying my hair into a ponytail with little tendrils framing my face, and setting off to work.

I entered my office about 40 minutes later and called in both my secretary and personal assistant.

“Julia, book an appointment for me with Attorney Morris Adams; make sure to get an appointment today. It's very urgent.” I said to Julia, my personal assistant, who nodded and replied,

"Yes, ma'am, I will come back with news as soon as possible,” and turned to leave, closing the door after she left. I turned to William, my secretary.

“I need a high quality imitation toy gun.” William's eyes bulged, and he coughed.

“What are you going to use that for?” I smiled at his expression and said curtly,

“It's a secret. Try and get it for me today." Yes ma'am William said it playfully and left, but stopped halfway to the door.

“What about the meeting with Cooper Industries? Julia is not here; I should be around, at least,” he said.

“Cancel the meeting. Go do what I told you to do,” I said, and William just stood there staring at me.

“Is everything all right?” He finally asked. “Why wouldn't it be?” I asked back.

“Hurry up and do your tasks; I want results as soon as possible,” I added and shooed him away. Williams has been a good friend since college and later became my secretary when I took over Jones Corp. I try to keep our relationship as professional as possible since I don't want Daniel to have a reason to misunderstand.

I was in a daze when the telephone rang, bringing me to my senses. It was from the receptionist:

“Ma'am, Miss Elena is here to see you and says it's very important.” I looked at the receiver and hesitated. I didn't want to see my husband's mistress. But suddenly I had an idea: it takes two to tango.

“Direct her to my office,” I said to the receptionist. It wasn't long when I heard a knock and responded with a “come in” and relaxed into my chair, but I was not expecting what happened. Elena went on her knees in front of me and said,

“Mrs. Cooper, you must help me. I really can't lose my job. Daniel told me what happened and wants to fire me. I'm here to tell you the truth; there is nothing between us.” She was almost crying, but I could see the unwillingness in her eyes.

"Daniel, do you call my husband and your boss Daniel?” I hissed.

"No, please don't misunderstand; it was a slip of the tongue, Mr. Cooper. Yes, Mr. Cooper and I have nothing together; he's going to fire me because of the lies someone told you. Please, I can't lose this job.”
