"Before you say anything", Harry said.
"It's important I let you know what is at stake. If you decide to walk away from our little arrangement", Harry said. Anastasia knew she had beaten much more than she could chew. "After I tell you my family history you may understand my plight", Harry said before he started his story. " My grandmother, Paris and Matthew's grandmother were best of friends. It's as though they were joined at the hip. So it came as a shock to Megan when Paris told her that she now had a boyfriend", Harry said. Anastasia listened intently as Harry kept narrating his family history, Anastasia was drawn into as she imagined everything Matthew said. ****** "I now have a boyfriend ", Paris had said to her friend with a dreamy look in her eyes. "You're kidding right?", Megan asked and Paris shook her head, "It's Stephen Smith", Paris said. "When did this happen ", Megan questioned her friend, completely baffled. "We met during summer camp and I just accepted to be his girlfriend after the science fair ", Paris clarified. Megan was confused, she and Paris were among the popular girls in school. Even though Stephen attended a different high school, Megan knew Stephen wasn't popular. Megan knew all the popular boys in Stephen's high school. Megan was surprised her friend had accepted Stephen even without telling her, they told each other everything. The day Megan had met her friend's boyfriend, she understood why Paris had accepted him. Paris was a sight for sore eyes, he was very handsome but he wasn't popular. Stephen was cute and intelligent but Megan loved rolling with popular boys in school. After high school, they both attended the same college and before long, Paris told Megan that she had eloped with Stephanie to Paris and had gotten married. Megan had hoped her friend would later get over her infatuation and move on but Paris had done the direct opposite. At college, Paris had gotten into modelling and was doing well for herself. Things took a different turn when Megan found out that a machine, Paris and Stephen had walked on together was making waves. What Megan didn't know was that her friend had invested all her earnings from her modelling jobs in the business. Paris' sacrifice paid off big time. Huge companies were lining up to invest in the machine and Stephen's innovative ideas. Before long Paris and Stephen were billionaires. It looked like an overnight success story but those close to them knew the years of trial and error that led to their breakthrough. After the initial shock, Stephen and Paris' parents had gone through after they had shared the news of their secret wedding. Both families had made peace and came together to plan a wedding for Paris and Stephen. While Stephen stayed home, Paris went to her parents' house. Her mother and Stephen's mother were waiting for her so that they could continue with the wedding preparations. She had developed a headache and had gone home early. She walked into the most shocking scene of her life. Her best friend Megan stark naked, in bed with Stephen. Paris had run out of screaming. She had quickly gone into denial. Paris' screams had woken Megan and Stephen up. Stephen was disoriented and confused, while Megan blamed Stephen. "You seduced me", Megan had said repeatedly and Stephen had been tongue-tied. Anastasia was so immersed in the story that the sound of Harry's phone ringing startled her back to reality. "Excuse me", Harry said as he picked up the phone and answered the call. Anastasia was completely mortified, she had lots of questions. Why did Stephen sleep with his wife's best friend? Why did Megan agree to it? Did Stephen really seduce her? Anastasia" 's heart went out to Harry's mother, she couldn't imagine being betrayed by her best friend. "I am sorry Ana but I have to be part of a conference call. My little story had made me lose track of time", Harry apologized. "pls let's continue this discussion once I am done with the call", Harry pleaded and Anastasia accepted. While Harry made his call, Anastasia went to her room and was surprised to see a message on her phone from her friend Britney. The last time they had spoken was the morning of her wedding. Britney had tried talking to her that morning but all she had wanted to do was run. Throughout that year, Britney had tried to contact her. She had sent countless messages on social media but Anastasia had ignored all her messages. Now she was back in town she could no longer ignore Britney because she knew she could run into her. Anastasia decided to call the line Britney used years ago and it rang. Anastasia had no idea if Britney was still using the line. On the first ring, a voice said "hello", Anastasia knew it was Britney. "Britney it's Anastasia ", Anastasia had said and immediately tears came to her eyes. Walking away from her family and friends had been really hard and hearing her friend's voice suddenly made her emotional. "Ana, was I such a bad friend that you would turn your back on me too", Britney said. "I am so sorry. Let me explain to you in person ", Anastasia pleaded. "Are you in town?", Britney asked. "Yes I am", Anastasia replied. After the call, Anastasia felt so much better. Britney had agreed to come over in a few days. Anastasia's thoughts were interrupted by a light tap on her door. "Can I come in?", a voice she recognised to be Harry's said. "Come in", Anastasia responded. He came in and sat on the vanity chair, after Harry apologized for the disruption he continued. "My mother found herself in a serious dilemma. My father had never been unfaithful to her. She didn't know why it had to happen weeks before their wedding and with her best friend", Harry said. Anastasia could understand Harry's mother's plight. She had run away without even giving Matthew a chance to explain. "So what happened next?", Anastasia asked. "After a lot of begging from my father and his family, my mother married my father. But that was not the worst part of it", Harry started. " What was the worst part?", Anastasia asked. "The worst part was when my parents discovered one week after their wedding, that Megan was expecting ", Harry said. Anastasia shook her head. It really was a difficult time for Paris Smith, Harry's mother. Harry related how his father had insisted Megan terminate the pregnancy but Megan had bluntly refused and had given birth to Herbert, Matthew's father. Anastasia was horrified, Harry's mother had really gone through a lot. "Megan made my mother's life a living hell and her son was even worse. He came over to my dad's for a holiday and not long after he got the maid pregnant. And that was how Matthew came into the picture", Harry disclosed. Anastasia could sense that Harry's parents had a very difficult marriage because of Megan. "Things got worse when Herbert clocked eighteen. Megan insisted Herbert be given his inheritance. And so my father shared all his assets and businesses with Herbert. I was born to hear that Megan and my half-brother squandered everything ", Harry explained. Anastasia now understood Harry's mother's pain, Megan her friend was a gold digger. Paris was the reason Stephen was a millionaire while Megan and her son were gold diggers. "Why my mom is very furious with me is because there's a clause in my father's company bylaws that stops me from taking over the company if I am not married", Harry said. Anastasia now understood Harry's plight. "So are you leaving me for my nephew?", Harry asked. "Are you still in love with him?", Harry asked."Yes, I am," Anastasia answered, and Harry's face fell. "I thought he cheated on me," Anastasia began to explain. She told Harry everything that happened, from the video she received showing Matthew sleeping with another woman to the discussion she had with Matthew at his house. "That day you saw me at his house. I only went there because he begged me to come over so that he could explain things to me. "Anastasia rambled on, but Harry kept silent. "I never set out to hurt you. I didn't know I was still in love with Matthew until I set my eyes on him. I regret running off and not talking to him after I received that video on the morning of our wedding. Now that I know that he was not the person in the video, I can't hold myself back from being with him, "Anastasia said. Harry sat really still, and Anastasia became worried, "Please say something," Anastasia begged. She went closer to him and took his hand in hers, "I never meant to hurt you..." "Cut the crap and say some
Anastasia didn't know if she was ready to receive any bad news. She was not happy that Natasha had interrupted her time with Matthew. "I am all ears," Anastasia said to her friend and sister as she settled in on the couch and took a sip of her drink. "First of all, tell us what really happened that day. You owe us an explanation as to why you ran off," Natasha said, "what exactly happened that morning? You just took off without any explanations. You cut everyone off. Anastasia, everyone was worried about you." Anastasia exhaled and launched into the entire story of what happened the morning of her wedding. She also told them what Matthew had said about the video. After Anastasia finished her explanation, Natasha exhaled and shook her head, "I don't know what to say." "Do you believe him?"Britney asked. " I do," Anastasia answered, "I know Matthew loves me" Natasha looked at her sister, and she knew Anastasia was not telling them everything, "And what about your hus
ANASTASIA After Britney and Natasha left, I became very anxious. Divorce was all I needed from Harry to be free to be with my man. The whole idea of the contract marriage was so that Harry could claim his inheritance, and now that aim has been achieved, I just hoped that he would free me from the contract. When it drew near to the time Harry usually came back from work, I took a seat by the window hoping he would come back soon. Finally, I saw the gate open, and his Rolls Royce drove in. I knew nothing about Harry Smith, but I hoped he wasn't a man who would want to keep me against my wish. Shortly after he arrived, I was notified by one of the housekeepers that dinner was ready. went down for dinner hoping to see Harry so that I could talk with him but he didn't come for dinner. I was disappointed and ate alone. After dinner, I decided to go to his room to talk to him. I knocked several times but there was no response, I decided to forge ahead with my plan of talkin
When I got inside I tried sleeping but Matthew and Harry had robbed me of sleep. The following day, I went to the hospital and I was surprised to see him already sitting. He smiled when he saw me, his mom was there with him. "You're here", she said acknowledging my presence, "I hope you slept well", she said. "I did. Thank you", I said. "How is he?", I asked Harry's mom, "Why don't you ask him", she said with a smile, she bent down and planted a kiss on her son's head. "Let me give both of you some space ", she said and walked out. "Thank you for saving my life", Harry said. "You don't need to thank me", I whispered. He looked so weak and pale and that made my heart break, "what happened", I asked him. "I don't want to talk about it ", Harry said, "not yet", he added. "I brought you breakfast. Your mom told me your favourite and I had the chef make it just the way she said you like it ", I said, he smiled and his eyes lit up. I could see he was still ver
HARRY Shortly after, my driver left to bring Clarise to the venue he called and informed me that Clarise was not at her house. I started to panic, and while I was trying to reach Clarise on the phone, Peter called. "She said yes," Peter screamed into the phone. He had just proposed to his girlfriend, and she had accepted the proposal. Peter went ahead to apologise for not waiting till he got to the venue like we had all planned. Even from the phone, I could hear how excited Peter was. He asked me if I had proposed to my woman. I told him she was still on her way, I lied because I didn't want to dampen his celebratory mood. I went to Clarise's house myself but she wasn't there. I couldn't reach her on the phone either. Her friends whose contact I had didn't know her whereabouts. My mother was equally worried. The following day, I told Peter what really happened. He felt so bad for me. He invited me over to have dinner with his fiancè and I obliged. On my way to Peter's hous
"I didn't give her a chance to talk.", Harry said expressing his frustration. "She had ignored me for months, and all of a sudden, she just waltzed in after all the hurt she had caused me. I just didn't want her to reject me again." Anastasia felt Harry's pain, she understood why Harry had resorted to a contract marriage. Harry had fallen in love and had gotten burnt. "There is something I wanted to discuss with you that night", Harry said, "I found out that I have to remain married for six months otherwise my inheritance will be handed over to my nephew. " Anastasia exhaled, she was in a fix. Matthew had threatened to get involved if she didn't end her marriage with Harry. If Matthew told the board that he and Anastasia were sexually involved with each other, Harry would inevitably lose the company. Anastasia didn't know what to do, she had to help Harry keep his inheritance. She opened her mouth to tell Harry of his nephews's threat but she couldn't bring herself
NATASHA It was raining cats and dogs that day. I had a photoshoot I had to get to, and my father had insisted he take me there himself. The rain lashed against the windshield, blurring the city lights. Inside my father's car, the chauffeur was trying hard to navigate through the heavy rain and thunderstorms. I sat beside my father browsing through hot gossip on social media. I was trying to distract myself from the storm. Thunderstorms always scared me it had been that way for as long as I could remember. I tapped impatiently on my phone."Daddy, I told you, I can drive myself," I protested for the umpteenth time. Dad sighed, a fond smile playing on his lips. "I know, sweetheart, but I worry." I rolled my eyes, but truthfully I loved it when my father showered me with his attention and affection. Despite his stern exterior, my father was a softie at heart. The car suddenly swerved to avoid a particularly aggressive puddle, and I clutched the armrest, my heart started pound
NATASHA Anastasia's jaw dropped. "He pulled a gun on Dad?", Anastasia asked, her voice trembling as she spoke. Her face was drained of all colour, Anastasia was as terrified as I had been. "There's more," I said, the memory of that night was a festering wound, it was still very fresh. Even recounting to Anastasia still sent chills down my spine. A huge metal door opened and two of Damien's men emerged, dragging a struggling figure between them. My heart hammered against my ribs. I didn't recognise the man and I couldn't have because his face and body was covered in blood. He had been severely beaten. This man, whoever he was, wore a cheap suit, his face a mask of terror. "He says he'll get you the money tomorrow," one of Damien's men grunted, shoving the man towards his boss. Damien, tall and imposing, didn't even blink. He gave a curt nod, and the next thing I heard drew air out of my lungs and almost deafened me. A gunshot was fired into the man's skull and l saw him fall
Anastasia lay still, her body wrapped in the soft glow of the bedside lamp. The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the soft hum of the air conditioner. Her chest rose and fell with each deep breath, but she didn’t say a word. Harry shifted uncomfortably, his arm draped loosely over her waist as he studied her face. She stared at him, her lips slightly parted as if she wanted to speak but couldn’t find the words. “Anastasia,” he began, his voice trembling, “I need you to know… I love you.” Her expression didn’t change, and her gaze was still fixed on him. Harry’s heart ached at her lack of response. He shifted to sit on the edge of the bed, running a hand through his dishevelled hair. “I know i have already professed my love for you,” he continued, his voice barely above a whisper. “And I promised to wait. But my heart yearns for you, " he paused, swallowing hard—"I thought tonight meant something. But if it doesn’t, I understand.” Anastasia turned her head away
When Anastasia had gotten home, she got into the sitting room and sank into a chair. She was pleased that Harry wasn't there; she couldn't face him, not with her tear-streaked face. Anyone with eyes could easily tell that Anastasia had been crying. Her eyes were red and swollen. She rang for a maid, and one appeared. Anastasia asked for a bottle of wine. Shortly after, the maid came back with a tray. On it was a very expensive wine And a glass. Anastasia poured herself some and gulped it down. On the second glass, the alcohol had started kicking. She took two more glasses, and soon after, she started feeling numb to all the pain she had been feeling. By the time Anastasia got to her feet, she was tipsy. In the twilight of the evening, Anastasia walked into the bedroom, her eyes meeting Harry's in the soft glow of the bedside lamp. "What are you doing here?" she asked. Harry rose to his feet, his eyes reflecting a mixture of anticipation and nervousness. "I really needed to
"Matthew is a woman's man. Women love him, and he loves women. The lady in the video with him just happens to be one of his many flings, "Caroline said. Hearing the words spoken to her about a man she worshipped and adored felt like a knife was continually being plunged into her heart. Anastasia held her sister's hand a little tighter; Natasha, sensing her sister's pain, turned to her, "Would you like her to stop? You don't have to listen to this if you don't want to, "Natasha whispered to her sister. No,” Anastasia said, her voice steady despite the storm raging within. “Continue.” "Okay," Caroline said and continued, "Like I said earlier, another woman had walked into the two of them and made quite a scene. Coral is the name of the lady in the video. I was able to find her, and she was very open about her relationship with Matthew. " The two sisters listened intently, and Caroline divulged more of the information she was able to get from Coral. "She assured me that s
After her talk with Harry's mom, Anastasia had resolved to look deeper into her relationship with Matthew. When Paris had told her how she had found out from a friend that her best friend had drugged her fiancé and made it look like they had sex. Anastasia had also hoped that she would find out that truly the video was fabricated. When Natasha suggested employing the services of the private investigator she had used to investigate her husband, Anastasia reluctantly agreed, hoping Matthew would be vindicated. She clung to the belief that the video showing him with another woman was fabricated, as Matthew had insisted. While she waited with Natasha for the PI, Anastasia found herself replaying every beautiful moment she had shared with Matthew. She remembered how he had proposed, his eyes filled with love, and how he whispered, "I can't wait to marry you." His eagerness had been so contagious that they had rushed into a short engagement. Could the man who once seemed so perfec
When Anastasia got to the car, the chauffeur stepped out and swiftly opened the back passenger door for her. She hesitated for a moment, clutching her bag tightly, before sliding into the seat. The soft click of the door closing was almost deafening in the silence that followed. Inside, Harry sat with his eyes closed, his head tilted back against the headrest. His posture was stiff, his jaw clenched as though trying to contain an eruption of emotions. “Harry…” Anastasia began, her voice soft, almost pleading. “Not here. Not now,” Harry interrupted his tone firm but devoid of the warmth she once knew. Anastasia felt a lump rise in her throat. The distance between them in the car felt vast, as though they were strangers rather. She turned her gaze to the window, watching the city lights blur as the car started moving. The silence was heavy, each passing second amplifying her dread. Back at the office, Matthew was fuming with anger. He paced back and forth, stopping at interv
Anastasia was about to speak when the door creaked open. In strode Stephen Smith, Stephen’s eldest son and Matthew’s father, his presence commanding immediate attention. His sharp suit and the frown on his face gave him the air of someone who had walked into a battlefield uninvited but ready to fight. Stephen turned slowly to look at his first son, his disapproval was evident on his face. “Well, it’s nice of you to join us, Herbert,” he said, his voice laced with sarcasm. “I trust you’re here to fix the mess your son has created.” Herbert’s gaze landed on Matthew, whose smugness had momentarily been replaced by unease, and then on Anastasia, who stood stiffly, her fists clenched at her sides. "What mess?" Herbert asked coolly, though his expression suggested he already had an idea. Before anyone could respond, Anastasia stepped forward. Her voice was clear but the nervousness she was feeling could be felt in the tremble of her voice. "Nothing happened between Matthew and me
Stephen's booming voice sliced through the tension. "Matthew, have you lost your mind? Can someone explain what is going on here?" Herbert said as he gestured to the projector screen, where an incriminating photo of Anastasia and Matthew was frozen mid-display. He stared at everyone in the room before fixing his gaze on Matthew, who stood at the head of the table. "You see, Grandpa," Matthew began, his voice dripping with mock civility, "my dear uncle here has a very unstable home. His wife is clearly—" "Matthew, take my wife’s name out of your mouth," Harry growled, his voice low and menacing. The tension in the room reached a boiling point. Board members shifted uncomfortably in their seats. "This is outrageous!", Mr. Carter, the oldest member of the board, said. He pushed his glasses up his nose, glaring at Matthew. "Do you think this is a circus? This is unacceptable and very shameful for the Smith family.", Mr Carter added. Across the table, Mrs. Green leaned forward
The boardroom was bathed in natural light streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows, casting sharp contrasts on the polished oak table and leather chairs. A large projector screen at one end of the room remained dormant, one of the assistants came in and turned it on and connected it to a computer, prepping incase it was to be used for a presentation. Anastasia sat stiffly beside Harry, her fingers curled tightly around the edge of her notepad. Across from her, Matthew reclined in his chair, an air of smugness clinging to him like a second skin. The room buzzed with murmurs as board members shuffled papers and exchanged polite nods. Paris, Harry's mother, sat at the far end of the table, her hawk-like gaze scanning the room. She was impeccably dressed, her navy blue suit perfectly tailored, her hair was pinned back in an elegant chignon. She radiated authority, her presence commanding silent respect from everyone in the room. Anastasia avoided Matthew’s gaze, but she could feel
Paris sat frozen in Blake’s car, her tears drying against her cheeks. Blake’s words hung heavy in the air. "Herbert never betrayed you," Blake said softly, her hands trembling on the steering wheel. Paris blinked, her mind struggling to process the words. “What do you mean?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I saw them… together. I saw it with my own eyes.” Blake exhaled sharply and turned to face Paris. Her expression was a mixture of guilt and determination, as though she’d been carrying this truth for far too long. “Paris, listen to me,” Blake began, her voice shaking. “What you saw wasn’t what you think it was. Herbert didn’t betray you. Megan… she planned everything. She drugged him.” Paris recoiled as though she’d been slapped. “What?” Her voice rose, disbelief lacing her tone. “You’re saying Megan—my best friend—did this intentionally? That she… drugged Herbert?” Blake nodded, her eyes brimming with regret. “Yes. Megan was jealous of you, Paris. She envied e
