I adjusted my dress for the millionth time that night, glancing at her reflection in the ornate mirror of the grand ballroom. The previously half-full opulent space was now filled with more people than I had ever seen in a single room.

It was crowded, the chatter was louder, and it was starting to get hot. Everyone was starting to get tipsy, the alcohol getting to them. I had never seen that many alcoholic drinks in a single room before.

Mr. Alonzo, my date for the night, seemed to be a well-known figure in that circle—a man of considerable wealth and influence. I did what he hired me to do at the lavish party to a tee; smile, be charming, and keep up appearances.
